AGRICULTURAL MUSEUM BATHURST In 1970, a small group of people interested on preserving the heritage of agriculture in the Eastern Cape, formed a committee to establish a home for the many valuable items which would otherwise be lost forever. Starting with a mere 30 items, the collection has grown to more than 1400, many of which are both rare and unique and all of which have been donated. There is something of interest for everyone as the collection ranges from ox-wagons, horse drawn vehicles, agricultural implements and tractors, steam engines, dairy and household utensils, veterinary equipment, ostrich incubators to name but a few of the exciting exhibits the Meseum has to offer.

AMATHOLE MUSEUM The Amathole Museum has its origins in the King Williams Town Naturalist Society founded in 1884. The Societys collections quickly outgrew temporary accommodation in the Council Chambers and Public Library. From these small beginnings, the museum grew. It is the major attraction for visitors to King Williams Town and also serves the local community. The original museum building today forms the eastern wing of the Amathole Museum complex. It was officially opened to the public in October 1898 as The Museum of Natural History. A major extension to the building, linking it to the Public Library, was completed in 1953. The Wesleyan Church (photo), and Post Office buildings were incorporated in the early 1980s to house the growing museum.

JEFFREYS BAY SHELL MUSEUM Jeffreys Bay has always been known for its beautiful shells so it stands to reason that the town should have a Shell Museum. The more than 600 shells from species all of the world makes it one of the largest shell collections in South Africa and attracts shell fanatics from all over the globe. Housed in glass cases is a huge variety of shells including the legendary cowrie, the rare paper nautilus, tiny baby jam tarts and a new species of cone. Local shells and shell craft can be purchased just outside the museum from the shell shops and stalls.

GREAT FISH POINT LIGHTHOUSE A rekindling of the light ceremony, as noted by a bronze mounted plaque, commemorated the shining centennial of the Great Fish Point Lighthouse on the 1st of July 1998. The Managing director of Portnet at the time, Mr. R.W. Childs, dedicated the service of this coastal light guard, originally commissioned by the Cape Colonial Government in 1890, for a further hundred years. Erected only after much delay, its light was first lit on the 1st of July 1898. Placed at the mouth of the Great Fish River in Great Fish Point, 25km from the holiday haven of Port Alfred, this nautical note keeps Indian Ocean faring cargo and carriers travelling off the east coast at a suitable contouring distance. For the safety of shipping on the South African coast, a revolving electric light flashes from this source to mariners once every ten seconds. Built 800 meters from the shoreline and standing 75 metes above sea level, its warning light strength of 5 000 000 Candelas can be detected at a focal plane height of 85 meters above the high water mark as a result of its location elevation. Two black vertical stripes flank the broad centre white stripe of this lighthouse, whose tuxedo like appearance substitutes a red roof light cap and matching railings for a red bow tie and matching

cufflinks.

According

to

the

Lighthouse

Directory

navigational beacons need to meet the requirements of standing at least 4 meters tall with a minimum surface area of a 4 square meter footprint in order to be classed as an active lighthouse. The Great Fish Point Lighthouse meets these standards as well as housing an authentic black spiral staircase in the building chamber and demarcating its territory with a white boundary wall proudly hanging black lettering reading Great Fish Point Lighthouse 1898. An active lighthouse of authenticity.

NATURAL SCIENCE MUSEUM The oldest of the Albany Museum Complex, the Natural Science Museum, was established in 1855. A visit to this museum will allow you to learn more about the natural history and science of the Eastern

Cape.

Some

of

the

interesting

exhibits

include

a

reconstruction of the first dinosaur discovered in South Africa, the Gibeon meteorite and a working Foucault pendulum. A fire in 1941 destroyed the building and many of the exhibits and the new exhibits constructed were supplied by museums around the country. Plenty of research takes place at the museum and this centres around the earlylife histories of freshwater fishes, water qualify and management, late Stone-age and early iron-age people and more.

OBSERVATORY MUSEUM The Observatory Museum was opened on 2 February 1982 and the building used was originally a 19 century jewellers shop and family home and it is connected with the identification of the Eureka (the first authenticated diamond in the country way back in 1867). The ground floor of the museum tells this story. The building is multi-storied and houses a number of exhibits one of which focuses on Dr William G. Atherstone and the other main participants who identified the first diamond in South Africa. The owner and designer of the building, Henry Carter Galpin, a jeweller and watchmaker lived in the town until his death in 1886. He was a very successful businessman who also managed to find time to explore some of his interests (natural history, music, practical mechanics, astronomy and options). You will find many of these features and interests in the Observatory. Some of the more unusual features are the Meridian Room where astronomical time, GMT (Grahamstown’s mean time) could be calculated, a Camera Obscura which is the only one built is the country.

NATIONAL ENGLISH LITERARY MUSEUM The National English Literary Museum gives us the opportunity to promote reading and encourage appreciated of all forms of creative South African literature that is written in English. The museum began in 1972 as a collection of documents and has grown over the years, with thanks to funding from government. The artefacts housed here are literary and of imaginative and creative writings in English of Southern African writers, regardless of their mother tongue. The museum endeavours to keep unpublished manuscripts and drafts as well as diaries, private correspondence and proofs. A collection of all genres including short stories, memoirs, journals, books for children, plays, novels and poetry is kept at the museum.

INTERNATIONAL LIBRARY OF AFRICAN MUSIC The International Library of African Music, fondly known as ILAM, was established in 1964 and is a researching, publishing and teaching centre for African traditional music. It is not strictly a museum but it does house a collection of more than two hundred traditional African musical instruments, many of which are still able to be played.

July Newsletter Snakebite Statistics The World Health Organization has declared snakebite a neglected tropical disease and has launched a campaign to reduce snakebite mortality worldwide by 50% within the next 8 years. Over one million people are bitten by highly venomous snakes globally every year, resulting in over 100,000 fatalities. It is estimated that around 20,000 people die from snakebite in Africa every year, of which 10-12 deaths are reported in South Africa. As we lack accurate data, the above figures are all estimations based on available information, but the real picture may be quite different. Actual snakebite fatalities could be far less or exponentially higher. We just do not know, and gathering such information is not easy. In South Africa we often hear of serious snakebites as well as fatal bites and this information may come from the likes of the Poison Information Center or hospitals in high-risk areas. However, we struggle to get information from small rural hospitals and clinics as well as hospitals in low-risk areas that deal with very few snakebites. Another problem is that fatal snakebites in rural areas are not always reported, or such cases get lost. Victims die and are buried without anyone recording such fatalities.

Free Visits to under-resourced schools around Cape Town Cape Town is a city surrounded by beautiful biodiversity, abundant oceans, and readily accessible nature. But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Bringing these human and natural worlds together in a sustainable way takes what we call "Smart Living" - and in partnership with DHL we're bringing free sustainability outreach lessons to schools throughout that area. Smart Living is a mobile lesson, presented by outreach teacher Anzio Abels, designed for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. All lessons are CAPS-curriculum aligned, with a selection of themes: Biodiversity, energy, water, and waste. Teacher Anzio uses interactive, tech-savvy lessons to engage learners and communicate even the most complex concepts in fun, informative ways! To book, simply complete the online booking form on our Foundation's website here, or email schools@aquariumfoundation.org.z The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation's outreach programmes are offered for free to under-resourced schools around Cape Town, thanks to our generous partners like DHL, and for a small fee to schools that have the capacity. Chat to your child's teachers about this opportunity! Our teachers are able to accommodate classes of up to 40 learners, for a maximum of 200 children a day (but we are happy to make multiple visits to the same school if you have a particularly big group). #5 EMPLOYEES 2

It should be noted that the concept of employees as data subjects (‘DS’) is much wider than the only current employees and can be extended to include former employees, temporary and casual staff. Likewise records encompass books, drawings, photographs, films, negatives and generally the storage of visual images. Interaction

with

recruitment

companies

must

also

be

approached with circumspection be it related to information obtained and/or supplied. Due to Covid work from home (‘WFH’) has become the norm rather than the exception. The concern aboutactual work done by and the productivity of such employees, has resulted in employers monitoring employees in workplace through CCTV, biometric clock-in systems & internet & telephone use, login times,

measuring

keystrokes,

tracking

live

locations,

monitoring & tracking internet and email usage & take screenshots

of

the

day.

According to estimates from research firm Gartner, around 80% of companies worldwide have introduced a form of remote monitoring software on their employees’ computers (Feedspot April 25 2021). It would appear that WFH is here to stay i.e.

According to a recent study from Boston Consulting Group (BCG), The Network, and CareerJunction only 4% of South Africans want to work completely on-site at an office after the pandemic

Over 53% of South African respondents said they would prefer a job which permitted them to work from home on occasion, while 44% said they wanted to work fully remotely (Feedspot April 25 2021). Accordingly there is no doubt that WFH monitoring and other practices will require adjustments for existing employee contracts, some of which pertains to RICA (The Regulation of Interception

of

Communications

and

Provisions

of

Communication-related Information Act, Act 70 of 2002) which should of course have been in place now for a number of years! . How easy it is to fall foul of the requirement that excessive processing of PI must not occur is evident from the following EU caselaw – it was found to be a breach of the GDPR and resulted in a fine of 35million Euros! This information was partially recorded, digitally stored, detailed, updated over time, and could be accessed by up to 50 executives throughout the company. In October 2019, all this information became accessible, companywide, for few hours as result of a configuration error, bringing to light H&M’s collection of information concerning its employees. It transpired that: H&M collected, recorded, stored and updated personal information (PI) of employees which could be accessed by a number of individuals; Employees were unaware that their PI (ofvery private nature, which they shared with supervisors on casual basis), was being processed as set out above; Employees

were
