PRETORIA, 11 October 2022 – The persistent high rates of overweight and obesity, particularly among adolescent girls, is putting lives at risk, as the transition phase between childhood and adulthood is a critical period for the onset of obesity-associated morbidity Some 31 3 per cent of 15-19-year-old females are overweight or obese, compared to 9 6 per cent of males in the same age range

UNICEF South Africa has launched ‘My Body, My Health: My Wealth’, a campaign aimed at preventing noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) among adolescents and youth, coinciding with National Nutrition Week, 09 to 15 October This supports the central theme of the Department of Health focus on ‘Making healthy food choices easier’ for all

“The high rates of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents in South Africa are extremely concerning,” said Muriel Mafico, Deputy Representative, UNICEF South Africa “Investing in and enabling adolescents and young people to improve their mental wellbeing and physical lifestyles, particularly adolescent and young women, will save lives and ensure a more prosperous future for society as a whole,” added Mafico Young people’s choices to adopt healthier lifestyles are influenced by school and family environments, as well as peers and role models Barriers to physical activity include time spent on social media and watching television, feeling tired, availability of facilities, safety, and having enough time all of which can prevent young people from being active – COVID-19 related lockdowns presented an additional challenge

The My Body, My Health: My Wealth campaign, supported by AstraZeneca's Young Health Programme (YHP), works to make NCD prevention a national priority and enable young people to live healthily The campaign, cocreated with the input of young people, meets adolescents and youth where they are: both online and offline Creative design, engaging content, live challenges and inspiring role models will spearhead the campaign to lower the incidence of NCDs among youth in South Africa by investing in their health NCDs are chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes Collectively, they are responsible for 70 per cent of deaths worldwide NCDs are the leading cause of death and disability in South Africa, carrying huge costs to patients, families, communities, the health system and the economy at large Several NCDs can be prevented by adopting a healthy diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and managing stress levels

UNICEF South Africa will leverage its extensive network of young volunteers across the country Youth clubs, in and out of schools, have been invited to join the campaign, share their knowledge and encourage other young people to adopt healthy habits

GOALS WE ARE SUPPORTING THROUGH THIS INITIATIVE

YOUTH ENERGY TO TACKLE PERSISTENT MALNUTRITION

EMPOWERING YOUNG SOUTH AFRICANS TO ADVOCATE FOR GOOD NUTRITION

UNICEF South Africa has started the first ever trainings on youth advocacy for good nutrition, to empower young South Africans to advocate for the changes they would like to see in their community and country to enable them to lead healthier lives.

The nutritional status of children and young people in South Africa is poor. Some 27 per cent of the country’s children are stunted, while wasting, micronutrient deficiencies and obesity remain a challenge and sometimes even coexist in the same household. Rising food prices and the ongoing fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic threaten to worsen these persistently high rates.

That’s why young people are now speaking up and using the UNICEF trainings to strengthen their advocacy for an environment that is conducive to, promotes and provides access to nutritious foods. The main nutrition topics identified include the marketing of unhealthy foods to children and young people, breastfeeding and the marketing of formula milk, fiscal policies for nutrition, as well as the link between mental health, nutrition and physical activity.

The trainings were made possible thanks to support from AstraZeneca and the technical expertise and guidance from the Adolescent Development and Participation section at UNICEF Headquarters. In South Africa, the nutrition and communications sections adapted and contextualized the newly launched ‘Youth Advocacy Guide’ to in-person trainings for UNICEF South Africa Volunteers

“It was very thrilling and educational to attend the nutrition advocacy training. I discovered mental aspects of myself that I had no idea existed, which greatly increased my optimism for the youth and overall future of South Africa.”

Lebohang Bodigelo, participant and UNICEF Volunteer

Led by Lea Castro, Nutrition Officer and Amir Bagherioromi, Volunteer Programme and Campaigning Officer, with support from Ariza Francisco, intern at the Health and Nutrition section, the two trainings in July and August, engaged nearly 200 young volunteers at the University of Pretoria and North West University Students learned about the main priority areas for child and adolescent nutrition in the country, including a situation analysis as well as the main policy opportunities, to inspire them to pursue their advocacy journeys and support the UNICEF programmatic objectives to reduce all forms of malnutrition.

“Networking and a healthy diet were two of my highlights I now think networking should not be limited by age of social position, and nutritious cuisine does not have to be boring. With networking, even Patrice Motsepe is reachable via a contact if I so choose

I'm thankful that the session as held and that Kgalalelo Tshelane, our volunteer president, introduced us to UNICEF.” Lebohang elaborated.

UNICEF South Africa is committed to empowering young people to become advocates for change and two more trainings will take place in the coming weeks at different provinces. Moving forward, the SACO nutrition and communications team will continue supporting young advocates in their journey through a mentoring programme in which they can also support each other and expand their networks to achieve their goals.

#8 EMPLOYEES 5

As promised in the previous insert, I will now address the penalties that may be imposed for non-compliance.

POPI exposure has four aspects to it;

• Firstly there is the possibility of a fine for non-compliance which can be up R10 million.

• Secondly the aforesaid can go hand in hand with spending up to 10 years in jail.

• Thirdly there is the suggestion that Section 99 (1) has introduced (Over and above the absolute liability aspect**) ‘ .. a form of statutory vicarious liability for employers if employees breach POPI and as a consequence, a civil action (by a person whose privacy has been infringed upon through the unlawful, culpable processing of his or her personal information) for damages may be instituted against the responsible party [the employer] irrespective** of whether there is intent or negligence on the part of the responsible party (ENSafrica - By Era Gunning & Nicole Gabryk)

• Finally there is a possible impact on your brand for a breach of security which the Information Regulator may require you to make public, over and above having to advise the Data Subject.

DISCLAIMER - Each case depends on its own facts & merits - the above does not constitute advice - independent advice should be obtained in all instances

The recently introduced Cybercrimes Act imposes a duty on electronic communications service providers and financial institutions to report certain offenses within 72 hours. Failure to make the required report could lead to a fine on conviction of a maximum of ZAR50 000

However let’s not stick to our shores – if the business you conduct falls under the auspices of the European Community General Data Protection Regulations (2016/679 & Directive 395/46/EC)(‘GDPR’) the fines are materially higher i e the greater of 4% of the entity's global annual revenue or €20 million!

Let’s take a leaf out of the UK book - ‘80% of UK small businesses close after fines under their privacy laws’

Before I move on, the above is a very definite indication that proper & adequate insurance must be at the top of the ‘shopping list’!

My next issue & final insert on employees will deal with the POPI requirements for the WFH scenario.

Free Visits to under-resourced schools around Cape Town

Cape Town is a city surrounded by beautiful biodiversity, abundant oceans, and readily accessible nature. But, it is also a growing city that faces the challenges of fulfilling the human needs of energy provision, clean drinking water, and waste disposal. Bringing these human and natural worlds together in a sustainable way takes what we call "Smart Living" - and in partnership with DHL we're bringing free sustainability outreach lessons to schools throughout that area.

Smart Living is a mobile lesson, presented by outreach teacher Anzio Abels, designed for Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners. All lessons are CAPS-curriculum aligned, with a selection of themes: Biodiversity, energy, water, and waste. Teacher Anzio uses interactive, tech-savvy lessons to engage learners and communicate even the most complex concepts in fun, informative ways! To book, simply complete the online booking form on our Foundation's website here, or email schools@aquariumfoundation.org.z

The Two Oceans Aquarium Education Foundation's outreach programmes are offered for free to under-resourced schools around Cape Town, thanks to our generous partners like DHL, and for a small fee to schools that have the capacity. Chat to your child's teachers about this opportunity!

Our teachers are able to accommodate classes of up to 40 learners, for a maximum of 200 children a day (but we are happy to make multiple visits to the same school if you have a particularly big group).
