Community Happenings

Join us at the C.L Simon Recreation Center on October 7 from 5-7 p.m. for the National Night Out event. This event features local first responders hosting the community at local block parties and at the Rec Center for a relaxed, friendly event focused on building goodwill between our community and members of the local first responder community. We will have food, fun and activities at the event and we hope you’ll come out and join us!

SFA Family Weekend brought large crowds to Nacogdoches this past weekend! Hotels were full and Downtown was very busy. We are working with SFA to improve on the shuttle system from campus and look forward to growing this event.

It'll be another great weekend in Nacogdoches with the SFA Gardens Fall Fabulous Plant Sale and Fall Fling at the Farmer's Market! Check out these events and more at visitnacogdoches.org/events

Brick Street Burger Battle Returns

September 12th

Mark your calendars our annual Brick Street Burger Battle kicks off Friday, September 12th! Zion Hill OPEN this Saturday for tours during African American Heritage Project BBQ

Zion Hill will be open for tours this Saturday, with artifacts and historic photographs on display. As we prepare for the upcoming Zion Hill exhibit, we’ll also have a sign-up sheet for those interested in sharing their own stories and photos about Zion Hill.

Coffee Ground Contributions

We would like to thank our friends at Dilly Dally Nac and Stone House Kitchen for donating coffee grounds to be used by our City Gardener to enrich the soil of the Durst-Taylor Gardens.

Coffee grounds add valuable organic matter, improve soil structure, and can help plants access important nutrients; making them a simple but powerful way to support a healthy garden.

Fall Planting during Thursdays in the Garden this week

Along with a historic craft, children will be planting a few fall vegetable during this week’s Thursdays in the Garden.

This program is every other Thursday at 10am at the Durst-Taylor House

East Texas Community Health Services and SFA are teaming up to provide a free flu shot drive-thru for everyone in the community! Check out the attached flyer for more details.

Public Works

Public Works crews are currently clearing the brush route in zone 5 and zone 21.

Citizens can still haul their brush and bagged lawn debris for unlimited free dumps to the City Landfill located at 4602 N.W. Stallings Dr., with their City of Nacogdoches issued water bill and ID/DL showing proof of residence.

Brush & Yard Waste Pickup

• Tree limbs and brush shall be stacked on street right-of-ways, or within 3 to 6 feet of the curb or street.

o Stacks shall not exceed 6'L X 4'W X 4'H and be limited to three piles.

o The maximum diameter of the largest limb shall not exceed 12 inches in diameter.

o Brush must be stacked in front of the residence that generated the brush.

o Brush placed on vacant lots or in the streets will not be picked up.

o Limbs should not extend into the roadway. Bagged yard waste

o Bagged yard waste collection is "ONLY" available for residential addresses.

o Bagged yard waste shall be placed within ten feet of the edge of the roadway for collection. Yard waste must be properly bagged.

o The city will only collect 20 bags per residence per week.

o Bagged Yard Waste may also be disposed of at the City landfill, for no charge, provided that the:

-Resident provide current copy of water bill & drivers license as proof of residence.

Monday, October 6 we celebrate 13 years of hosting MistiZfit classes. Celebrate with us by attending class for free and enjoying this high energy Zumba class. th

Tuesday, October 7 is National Night out. The recreation center/ library will hosting a National Night Out event from 5pm-7pm. th

Youth basketball registration will end October 12th. Boys and girls ages 5-14 can register to be a part of this winter league. Click here to register. Volunteer coaches needed!

Parks Manager Tommy Stanley (briefly) swapped jobs with Library Manager Mercedes Franks this week and the results are humorous to say the least Check out the video here

Code Enforcement

SPECIAL EVENT SIGNS THAT DON'T REQUIRE A PERMIT, BUT NOTIFICATION IS REQUIRED:

Special event or public announcement signs;

a. Such signs shall be allowed up to 14 days prior to such event, but shall be removed within two days after the scheduled event.

b. Such signs may be allowed for a maximum of 60 days.

c. The authority having jurisdiction shall be notified in writing prior to placement of special event or public announcement signs.

d. All signs shall be on-premises only, provided that nonprofit organizations shall be allowed temporary offpremises special event signs provided that:

1.The organization must have permission from the property owner to place the sign on his property.

2.There will be a maximum of six offpremises signs advertising the nonprofit organization function.

3.Each sign may be no more than 32 square feet in area.

4.The advertised function must occur within the corporate limits of the City of Nacogdoches and be sponsored by a nonprofit organization located in the City of Nacogdoches

Animal Services

The Nacogdoches Animal Shelter is pleased to announce Amanda Sowell as the new Rescue & Adoption Coordinator. Amanda began working with Animal Services in Dec. of 2020 as our Animal Services Assistant. Effective October 1, 2025 she has accepted the position as our Rescue & Adoption Coordinator. She loves interacting with and wants to promote our shelter animals in order to find their forever homes. This position was recently changed from Part-time to Full-time, and she is excited to have the opportunity to participate in community events, introduce the animals to our citizens, and expand our coordination efforts with rescues, fosters and volunteers. When she is not at the shelter she enjoys running, baking, gardening, and spending time with her husband and pets
