PHNOM PENH FIRST INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION

From 29 May to 1 June, Cambodia's capital hosted the FIRST PHNOM PENH INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION, organised by INTERKULTUR, a world leader in choral events, in collaboration with the incoming agency All Dreams Cambodia and with the support of the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, the Ministry of the Environment, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Information and the Municipality of Phnom Penh.

The event provided a platform for local and international choirs to showcase their talents, but also served as a catalyst for cultural exchange and mutual understanding. Phnom Penh is now on the world map of choral music.

For four days, 7 choirs and 200 participants from Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and Cambodia,took part in an internationallevel competition, assessed by a jury of distinguished professionals according to the famous Musica Mundi assessment system. As well as the competitive aspect, the event gave them the opportunity to take part in advanced workshops and to perform in public, much to the delight of the people of Phnom Penh.

In line with global efforts to promote sustainable development, the organisers of the First Phnom Penh International Choir Competition are committed to maximising the positive contribution of this major event and minimising its negative impact.

To combat climate change, the First Phnom Penh Choir Competition is the first international event in Cambodia to calculate and offset its carbon footprint. It also supports access to drinking water and education through donations.

With its opening ceremony, workshops, mini-concerts, competition and closing ceremony, the FIRST PHNOM PENH INTERNATIONAL CHOIR COMPETITION is much more than just a competition. It is a celebration of cultural diversity, artistic expression and international friendship. It also highlights Phnom Penh's growing role as a dynamic cultural centre and shines a spotlight on Khmer culture and the Kingdom's attractiveness. Finally, it provides tremendous support for important initiatives to preserve the environment and promote sustainable development in Cambodia.

THE EVENT

OPENING CEREMONY

The event kicked off on 29 May with a grand opening ceremony at the Chaktomuk Conference Hall, presided over by H.E. Dr Phoeurng Sackona, Minister of Culture. In front of an audience of 500 guests, after the playing of the Cambodian national anthem and a demonstration of traditional classical dance by the Royal Ballet Tep Monurum, the Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh Municipality, Lok Chumteav Keo Sok Pisey, warmly welcomed all the participants. Then it was the turn of H.E. Chuop Paris, Secretary of State for the Environment, to do the same, before underlining all the initiatives taken by the organizers to ensure that this event is committed to the environment and sustainable development. The floor was then given to H.E. Dr Phoeurng Sackona, who had the pleasure of declaring the official opening of the First Phnom Penh International Choral Competition. A short speech by Mr Johan Rooze, the artistic director and representative of INTERKULTUR, was followed by performances of several choirs, who delighted the guests with their songs.

WORKSHOP

 In addition to the competition, a series of workshops led by choral expert Peder Karlsson, co-founder of a new choral movement in Sweden, provided valuable learning opportunities for choral conductors, singers and choirs of all levels.

FRIENDSHIP CONCERTS

 Some participants performed at Aeon Mall Phnom Penh in two public mini-concerts, known as "Friendship Concerts", to enthusiastic applause from the audience.

THE COMPETITION

 Open to the public, the competition took place from May 30 to June 1, at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC). The 7 participating choirs were assessed by a jury of international experts, according to the famous Musica Mundi assessment system.

AWARDS & CLOSING CEREMONY

The event came to a close on Saturday June 1 with a joyous Awards and Closing Ceremony at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia, during which the best performances were honored and celebrated. A thunderous applause greeted the beautiful surprises orchestrated for the occasion by the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, including a dynamic ballet choreographed on the theme of music and the different nationalities of the participating choirs, as well as the harmonious singing of a Cambodian choir performing on stage for the first time.

A source of great hilarity, the audience was invited to sing in unison under the direction of Peder Karlsson, before Mr. Johan Rooze, representative of INTERKULTUR, presented the prizes and awarded the grand trophy for the First International Choir Competition Phnom Penh 2024.

THE GRAND PRIZE-WINNER

 INTERKULTUR representative Johan Rooze announced the winner of the First Phnom Penh International Choir Competition 2024. The trophy was awarded to Gita Suara Choir ISBI Bandung, a formidable choir from Indonesia.

The First International SustainabilityCommitted Event in Cambodia

THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SUSTAINABILITYCOMMITTED EVENT IN CAMBODIA

In line with global efforts to promote sustainable development, the organizers of the First Phnom Penh International Choir Competition are committed to maximizing the positive contribution of this major event and minimizing its negative impact.

In order to combat climate change, the carbon footprint of participants during their stay has been calculated by Ecosol France, and a significant part of this will be offset by the purchase of Gold Standard carbon credits to support a Ministry of the Environment project.

In addition, Phnom Penh First International Choir Competition supports access to drinking water and education through donations.

CONTRIBUTION TO TEUK SAAT 1001 « WATER IN SCHOOL » PROGRAM

 Teuk Saat 1001's mission is to improve the health and livelihoods of rural communities by setting up water kiosks that provide drinking water at an affordable price. Through the “Water in School” initiative the NGO provides also drinking water to hundreds of schoolchildren in several Khmer villages.

 For each participant, $2 was donated to Teuk Saat 1001's “Water in Schools” program.

CONTRIBUTION TO SIPAR

« MOBILE LIBRARY » PROGRAM

 SIPAR fights illiteracy and promotes education in Cambodia through giving access to books and reading opportunities to the most remote communities. Sipar’s mobile libraries, library boats, biblio-tuk-tuk and bibliovélos crisscross Cambodia's provinces, bringing books to disadvantaged people in around a hundred different locations.
