Dear Friends and Supporters, For almost a decade, our work at MKE Fellows has fostered the construction of an academically prepared pipeline of young leaders returning to and moving Milwaukee toward economic prosperity. But what does that really look like? I envision a community where organizations, cultures, and ideals engage and empower to create opportunities. The resilience and determination we’ve seen this year in response to global adversity has been remarkable, and we are truly excited to share news about the many noteworthy MKE Fellows accomplishments realized during a difficult 2021. Equity and opportunity are issues that affect us individually and collectively in our respective workplaces, areas of service, and civic involvement. We will continue to provide young scholars with the tools they need to successfully navigate their developmental journeys despite a system that threatens their self-esteem and challenges their potential. MKE Fellows supporters are members of the community who understand the importance of investing in future leadership and what it means to instill character, inspire courage, and drive the change to create a more equitable Milwaukee. The MKE Fellows as remains fervently committed to building partnerships with leaders and organizations who share our vision of future prosperity and inclusion. Working closely together, we can pave the path which leads to a more diverse and inclusive distribution of educational and professional progress. In 2022, United Way and MKE Fellows will partner and create a powerful initiative focused on impacting 25,000 young men of color. This compelling initiative has emerged because our core organizational values align in delivering access to knowledge and financial sustainability. While our focus remains fixed on the advancement of young men in the Milwaukee area, others have witnessed our success and understand the road to empowerment and fulfillment incorporates the same ministration to our brothers outside of Wisconsin. I am immensely grateful for your continued support. Our mutual efforts together are reshaping the future for our children’s education, our city’s workforce, and our country’s hope – freedom and justice for all. Gratefully,

John W. Daniels, III Executive Director

John W. Daniels III President and Executive Director of MKE Fellows

Our Mission MKE Fellows is a powerful initiative offering support to academically talented African-American young men in Wisconsin to ensure that they graduate from college prepared for career success.

Our Vision The primary goal of MKE Fellows is the creation of a vibrant pipeline of young, African-American male college graduates ready to return to Wisconsin to excel in their careers, build wealth, and become engaged servant leaders that will be emulated by others.

About the MKE Fellows MKE Fellows is a well-documented, growing youth leadership initiative providing support to Wisconsin’s talented and ambitious young African-American men designed to facilitate academic excellence, degree completion, and career and vocational preparedness never veering from commitment to community. The phenomenal success of the Fellows initiative has been evidenced in its ability to respond to today’s urgent social and health conditions while engaging Wisconsin communities most affected by these calamities. As an example, when the pandemic caused a disruption in academic services to MPS students, the MKE Fellows responded by creating the Five Pillars Tutoring Program – a collaboration between Marquette University, the Milwaukee Links and Henry Aaron’s Chasing the Dream Foundation – to successfully provide virtual tutoring and instruction to students at Ralph Metcalfe School in the heart of Milwaukee.

MKE Fellows Five Pillars of Success Internships & Job Experiences MKE Fellows are paired with Wisconsin companies that offer paid internships that help them gain on-the-job experience, build professional networks, and present fresh perspectives to company teams & cultures.

Mentorship Each Fellow is paired with a volunteer leader from the community who serves as a dedicated mentor providing career guidance and leadership advice. Fellows also have opportunities to meet successful professionals across a range of careers and consult with dedicated program staff as they navigate through the program.

Careers & Professional Development Through a vibrant network of commited businesses, corporations, civic, and community organizations, these young scholars are awarded internships and career options post graduation. This career advancement aspect of their individual professional development highlights the distintiveness of MKE Fellows and quantitatively demonstrates our succcess through these sustained, commited partnerships.

Scholarship Opportunities Earn merit-based book scholarships to help with academic materials. MKE Fellows has emergency funds to provide support to Fellows in emergency circumstances. Outstanding leaders also win awards, medals, and special gifts.

Civic Engagement MKE Fellows model provides meaningful opportunities to develop social relationships and business networks that will help students secure a job AND build a career. Fellows participate in “Lunch and Learn” events hosted by corporate and civic organizations as well as social events including the Fellowship Open, Summerfest, and more! Not only that, but our cohort mentality helps students connect with each other on a personal level providing peer-to-peer mentorship relationships that will benefit them as they continue along in their careers while retaining bridges to maintain the integrity of our talented city leaders.

2021 AT A GLANCE MKE Fellows Cooking Classes Monthly (December 2020 to June 2021) The MKE Fellows cooking series was a healthy, practical and delicious learning experience for our young scholars. The Fellows studied the culinary arts learning about nutrition, portioning, measurement, recipes, etiquette, and seasoning. Throughout the learning-to-cook process, important life skills that provide benefits beyond the kitchen were explored and refined. As an example, cooking requires the ability to plan ahead and prepare for the unexpected. Before turning on the stove, you must ensure that all ingredients are available and ready to use. You may need to run to the store, thaw an ingredient, or substitute a seasoning. Correct meal preparation enhances foresight and builds skills in planning for the future. Cooking also enables creative problem-solving and improvisational skills. When supplies are depleted, an ingredient is missing, or dietary restrictions are a concern, a workable solution must be found, often on the fly. This hones abilities to find solutions and think on your feet. Additionally, cooking is relevant and applicable across a variety of related competencies like safety protocols, teamwork, and patience.

“3 on 3” Basketball Tournament The MKE Fellows sponsored a “3 on 3” basketball tournament and awarded prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. Physical activity helps to improve motor coordination, flexibility, and endurance. It also encourages speed, agility, and strength. These skills are shown to have a positive effect on promoting healthy body weight and encouraging regular exercise which enhances cardiorespiratory fitness and self-esteem. Additionally, basketball is a team sport providing the Fellows an opportunity to interact with other Fellows on their own squad and on the opposition. They learned how to cooperate, work cohesively, and build a sense of camaraderie. Teamwork is a foundational premise in the practice of mutual respect and common courtesy. By design, the MKE Fellows “3 on 3” tournament built in rules to address sportsmanship and safety. The event was overwhelmingly successful and plans are underway for the next tournament in 2022.

Internships One core component of the MKE Fellows Five Pillars development design is “Internships and Job Experience”. Professional internships have resulted in transformational, immersive engagement with companies and organizations that, in turn, have benefited enormously by employing Milwaukee’s top level of young leadership talent. We are firm in our belief that in-person, face-to-face internships, inclusive of the wide scope of contemporary hybrid digital platforms available today, are singularly invaluable. The ability to actuate this core pillar of development for aspiring young professionals hinges on your support in that pursuit. Post pandemic, many organizations are prepared to provide a pragmatic alternative virtual experience that can continue to bolster the professional growth of each MKE Fellow. In light of this urgent need to remain prepared and poised to preserve our place in the multi-verse of data science, MKE Fellows has developed a digital platform initiative for a limited number of students in 2022.

Bucks Watch Party/Civic Engagement As the Milwaukee Bucks were on their way to making history as champions of the NBA, it was fortuitous that the MKE Fellows were able to experience such a monumental event for our city up close. Our young men enjoyed an exclusive opportunity to witness an Eastern Conference Finals playoff game from the famed “Deer District” outside of the Fiserv Forum. One of the formational components of the MKE Fellows initiative is providing youth with unique Milwaukee experiences highlighting the city’s many benefits. As the Fellows initiative continues to grow and Milwaukee continues to open its doors, many of these young men will play instrumental roles in the future of this great city.

Bethesda Senior Center As noteworthy as this development is with young people, the Fellows have additionally chosen to support Milwaukee’s senior citizens. Through a collaboration with the Bethesda Community Senior Citizens Center, MKE Fellows provided volunteer services for Bethesda Community Senior Citizens Center in conjunction with Bethesda’s 50th Anniversary celebration. Bethesda Community Senior Citizens Center is Wisconsin’s first Black-owned Senior Citizens Center founded in 1972 by Mrs. Liller P. Bates. The MKE Fellows agreed to the volunteer effort in partnership with the planned community outreach of a major health system in the Midwest.

Mentorship One of our strategies in facilitating measurable, purposeful development is through professional mentorship. Mentors serve as sources of wisdom challenging our Fellows to achieve in school, in the community, and in their careers. These vocational relationships commonly result in continuing personal and professional growth and development beyond schooling. The arrival of this talented and motivated workforce brings hope for a new legacy and signals a revitalized intergenerational exchange. The benefit to the city, state, and region is tangible and realistic. Our actionable mentorship element is spearheaded by BOD member LaNelle Ramey and Dr. Donald D. Dantzler, PhD. We have thoroughly researched the balance and have in place one mentor for every three Fellows. Based on metrics, best practices, and results, our model is tested and proven.

Mental Health Series Every other Saturday (January to June 2021) The COVID-19 pandemic triggered severe disruptions in academia worldwide. Many of our MKE Fellows were uprooted from their campuses, some experiencing serious coronavirus-related issues including illness and even death. Consequently, mental health concerns unique to the matriculating college students became acute. The need for immediate response and critical support spawned the creation and implementation of the MKE Fellows Mental Health series. This specific level of interpersonal support, designed to proactively identify and address any health-related issues, preserves the clear connection between mental health and academic performance. Helping students make the most of their education is our defined goal. Those struggling with depression or other mental ailments have a much more difficult time feeling motivated, learning, concentrating, retaining, and test-taking. Our goal is to provide essential, needed direction, counseling, guidance, and access to resources in these severe situations. Additionally, a healthy, balanced mental outlook is instrumental in allowing students to accept negative feedback with a positive mindset. A compromised mental state may lead to student skepticism, an inability to understand different perspectives, or in accepting constructive criticism.

Technology Scholars Program MKE Fellows is excited to announce a first-of-its-kind program in partnership with Church Mutual and Lakeland University called the IT Scholars. This program will enable one Fellow each year who's interested in studying IT to earn a full-ride scholarship at Lakeland University with guaranteed internships each summer with Church Mutual. Upon graduation, students will be able to avoid the uncertainty of stepping into careers with no prospects with a full-time job offer from Church Mutual.

Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP) The MKE Fellows launched Milwaukee’s first Sports Analytics Club in 2021 The Sports Analytics Club Program (SACP) model is an established, demonstrated, strategically-specific, youth-targeted, mission-related, results-driven national initiative. For reasons related to population, program oversight, and preservation of the highest standards, measurable, quantifiable results have been palpable. While there is flexibility in the distribution of resources club-to-club, city-to-city, campus-to-campus, the SACP model is resolute:

The SACP approach is built upon these four components: High School Partner Providing:

University Partner Providing:

SACP Board Providing:

(classroom, computer lab, etc.)

Direct University level expertise, guidance, and support to high school program

Authority over all technological and academic integrity, and retention of program standards

The physical high school club location

Immediate access to the desired

Direct one-on-one interaction with

National resources to bolster and

student populations (9th-12th grade)

University Technology staff

support local projects

On- site, Technology staff administrator/Teacher, aka Club “Governor”

Assistance in securing additional resources for program support (i.e., financial, project vetting, access to data scientists, etc.)

Advisory Board level oversight and authority

Sports-related Project of Significance providing: The building of an actual, data-driven, real-world portfolio, project by project, intended for submission to respective professional and collegiate Halls of Fame Substantive research information aligning and partnering high school project to NCAA and professional sports teams and organizations Creation of direct pipeline of advancement, awareness, and access to working data researchers, analysts, and professionals at the highest levels of athletics

Within that context, the MKE Fellows have partnered with SACP to launch the program in Wisconsin providing multiple resources through our network of contacts and existing partnerships, all of which align perfectly with mutual objectives – youth-serving, technology-focused, academically-driven, corporate and community partnerships across with educational, business, and sports organizations. With the establishment of clubs in Green Bay with UWGB and GB area schools, and in Milwaukee with Marquette University and Golda Meir/MPS, the opportunity for expansion is profound! The MKE Fellows serve as the sponsor organization facilitating community partnerships with local school districts, universities, athletic organizations, and sports teams, thus providing the resources required for successful SACP model deployment and program success.

Financial Literacy & Empowerment The data illustrating an acute lack of basic financial literacy among young people is voluminous. Lack of money management understanding can have years of consequences. Fundamental financial education at an early stage can prevent barriers and open doors to many resources. Finding solutions to impediments is key to basic financial education. The Fellowship Open has long-focused on financial literacy and the MKE Fellows have been involved in multiple awareness strategies, including interaction and dialogue with financial service and management organizations across Milwaukee’s business landscape. A majority of Wisconsin’s key financial institutions have had direct involvement with the MKE Fellows including banks, investment firms, and insurance companies. Our desire is to expand these professional relationships beyond “Lunch ‘N Learn” presentations into an elaborate, concentrated career plan. We have also been very effective in explaining the importance of savings and investment. MKE Fellows developed several mechanisms to demonstrate the direct benefit of employing these strategies including annual recognition and stock equity awards to outstanding achievers. That element has been effectively administered by Schwab and dozens of young men have benefitted enormously from that exposure. In some instances, this knowledge has helped with managing individual financial challenges. Given the vast base of information on financial management, functional literacy is key to upward mobility and community empowerment. The mission of the MKE Fellows Financial Empowerment Initiative is to provide African American male college students the knowledge and skills they need to build personal and community wealth. Objectives center on assuring that all MKE Fellows attain a base level of financial literacy proficiency, develop understanding of and confidence in utilizing brokerage services, and connect to credentialed financial professionals and related resources. Additionally, we provide information and direction on the availability and applicability of various retirement plans and services, the importance of and process for keeping financial records and filing taxes, and also provide MKE Fellows with a high-level orientation to real estate investing and entrepreneurship. This design has led to the formation of the MKE Fellows Economic Development Network Program.

Recruitment of High School Juniors The MKE Fellows program is now accepting High School Juniors. This is because we have learned that many students have not taken the proper courses in High School to gain entry into their college of choice. By recruiting students as Juniors we will be able to identify any mistakes that would cause a student to have a rocky transition into college.

Beyond the Green A group of approximately 25 MKE Fellows attended the 43rd Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits on Monday, September 20th with a special invitation to take part in Beyond the Green. They had the opportunity to see firsthand what a career in golf and an affinity to the game can truly mean. Beyond the Green is a career exploration event held annually in conjunction with the PGA Championship. Students from historically underrepresented backgrounds who are interested in a career in the golf industry have the opportunity to connect with industry professionals and get a behind the scenes look at The Ryder Cup’s massive operations. The event was highly impactful as it encouraged the MKE Fellows to take the initiative to shape their futures.

Accelerated Learning/ T-Lab As the MKE Fellows design gains national traction as a replicable model, MKE Fellows shares an incubational partnership with Michigan’s t-Lab Accelerated Learning Centers and Founder and CEO, Dr. Clarence Nixon. T-Labs has successfully advanced hundreds of students. In 2021, Detroit launched its inaugural cohort of students based on the MKE Fellows model with four exceptional young men, two of whom have accepted offers and are currently matriculating at Ivy Leagues institutions Columbia and Harvard Universities. Each student will follow a rigorous academic course of study designed to increase ACT scores and maximize their eligibility for post high school matriculation. Our deep dive and due diligence have identified the foremost accelerated learning program in the country, t-Lab, as demonstrated by their track record and success in changing the trajectory of academic performance. Wisconsin is particularly affected by this effort to improve primarily as a result of male African American ACT scores being among the lowest in the country. As a consequence, academic advancement opportunities, let alone mastery of STEM-related curricula, are extremely limited for underachieving Milwaukee youth. We now understand that through mentorship and rigorous precision in the academic achievement forum, these students can absolutely perform at the highest levels and they have also demonstrated superior ability to perform on standardized tests as well as they do in the classroom. Dr. Clarence Nixon, Jr., PhD is the Founder and President of t-Lab Accelerated Learning Centers.

Professional Development/ Lunch N’ Learn MKE Fellows gain access to leaders and work environments across a plethora of businesses and corporations, examining practices and philosophies, policies and procedures, organizational and operational structure, leadership oversight and management, industry dynamics, and more through incorporation of the Lunch ‘N Learn, now seamlessly accessible in the compatible virtual environment. The traditional “over lunch” presentation format is easily utilized and quite user-friendly in application related to the overall comprehensive MKE Fellows internship experience.

Fellows Spotlights Br yce Killibrew Bryce Killibrew is an MKE Fellow who has taken the opportunity to build his brand in his own unique way. Bryce has started his own electric bike company called New Way Innovation. These bikes are beacon-powered bikes with different features that regular bikes do not offer. “I started this company because I [along with my partner] just love riding bikes and going on the trails. We thought it would be great to give others an opportunity to enhance their bike riding experience.” What makes these electric bikes different from other bikes is that there is an app (created by Bryce) that keeps track of your duration and distance, can send messages, and also gives exercise plans and suggestions for an enhanced experience. As with every success story, however, there were a few setbacks during this process that Bryce endured. One was limited finances to jumpstart the business initially. “We started out having to completely fund our company ourselves. Of course, with the limited funding, we had a limited output of production and service. However, we took it as an investment in making and building our brand into what we wanted it to be.” New Way Innovation recently partnered with Life Charger to collaborate with them in the technology area of the company, and Bryce is working on obtaining more partnerships. Although they had a soft launch in early 2020, New Way Innovation will have its official launch in 2022. We can’t wait to see what Bryce does next!

Tyler Beaver Tyler Beaver is one of our MKE Fellows who had the opportunity to intern at Church Mutual, a long-time partner with our initiative. When he was asked to describe what his first day was like, he said, “It was extremely nerve-wracking. Although there were other MKE Fellows that interned there as well, I was the only Fellow and African-American in my department. I felt intimidated due to the fact that everyone else attended universities, and I was the only one who attended a community technical college. Their interests and conversations were not relatable, and I felt like I didn’t belong there.” However, that did not deter him from putting his best foot forward. He expressed that he used those feelings to power through the internship. Church Mutual also did not leave him with those intrusive thoughts and brought out the best qualities in him. Tyler was able to learn more about formulating business plans, problem-solving, and even enhanced his writing and communication skills. “Church Mutual is a very welcoming environment; they are willing to teach you and they work with you to make sure that you obtain the skills necessary for your career.” Tyler had a lot of opportunities to show his skills and enjoy himself. He had the honor of being a part of Toward One Wisconsin that was hosted by Church Mutual on the marketing team in their Diversity and Inclusion department. “I never fully grasped the concept of inclusion until I stepped foot into Church Mutual,” Tyler said. “But being in the place that I was in, and seeing how they treated me the same as everyone else despite coming from a different background, it helped me to see the true meaning of inclusion.” Tyler also had a chance to play golf in the 21st Annual Fellowship Open this past summer as a part of Church Mutual’s foursome. Tyler’s internship has since been extended, and he is looking forward to all of the possibilities that Church Mutual has to offer!

Desire Mukucha I am very ambitious. Coming from where I come from, I tend to think of life as: Every day is your last 24 hours. Time is limited. Because of that, I stay hungry. That drives me to dig deeper into everything I do. I’m always thinking of ways to do everything better. I grew up in Tanzania. I was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the history of Congo is war. That’s why my family ran to Tanzania and later migrated to Milwaukee in 2012. Being an intercity kid, programs like that MKE fellow have provided me with opportunities to develop significantly professional, communication, interpersonal, and cross-cultural skills. Looking at the circumstances of my life then and now, makes me lose my breath, making my heart skip a beat. This inspires and motivates me to push forwards in my academic career, with the desire to help others in the position I was in around the world. My academic goals are significantly enhanced by my desire to help and support the most vulnerable and advocate for global human rights, starting here in Milwaukee. I am currently a senior at Beloit College, double majoring in International Relations and Business economics, with a minor in philosophy. My time at Beloit college has turned me into an obsolete exceptional student in many ways. As a Milwaukee Fellow over the summer, I had a virtual internship with Church Mutual insurance company and I did side research through the McNair Scholars program At Case Western Reserve University. Through my internship with Church Mutual Insurance Company, I worked in the claims department. I worked closely with claim representatives on vendor management projects, continuous improvement, and I was responsible for developing new SharePoint sites for my team’s new Claim system. Through this opportunity, I was able to learn Microsoft SharePoint site development, as well as navigation through office 360 in-depth overall my time at Church Mutual, concluded with a final project and of an internal claims request form which will be used by managers to submit new project requests within the claims department. The title of my research was “The Relationship between Policing and Race in the United States The Never-Ending War of the Community and its Protectant.”

Aim of research My research was derived from two individual projects which throughout the work I was able to link them together as they were interconnected. My first project was on data configuration of police shootings within the United States predominantly in the State of Ohio in which the suspect was killed at the hand of an officer while responding to a 911 call. The second was working on solutions and creating an annotated bibliography of existing and emerging programs that can serve as alternatives to calling the police in situations that did not require any law enforcement assistance. This research aims to investigate and understand the causes and effects at which many individuals have died at the hands of a law enforcement officer.

Background and Search Problem As someone who has lived overseas as well as in the United States, I learned to integrate into different communities with care. I am originally from Africa, but I am also American. In Africa, we always taught to treat the police as your friends, in the community, and not something to fear. My siblings had police friends and so I was around them at home all the time. Over the years that I have lived in America, I have grown to fear the police. Why? Over the course of 2020 to 2021 conversations around policing and public safety has ramped up significantly since the murder-by-police of Tamir Rice, Tanisha Anderson, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and many others. While egregious and often racially disparate police violence is far from a new phenomenon in the United States, the amplification of Mr. Floyd’s murder, especially, by the Black Lives Matter social justice movement catapulted the issue of law enforcement violence against Black and Brown people straight into the public eye. My research aims to investigate and understand the atrous clash between law enforcement and the community, as well as finding potential solutions that may consist of possible policy recommendations based on the analysis of my findings. As the outcome of this project, the implementation and practice of these policies may help protect, serve, and better the relationship between the law enforcement and the community. Having the courage to follow your heart—that’s the best thing you can do. You already know what you want, even though you might not realize it. Your heart knows.

Senior / International Relations, Business Economics / Milwaukee, Wisconsin / President of African Caribbean Society / Varsity Soccer
