WHERE WONDER AWAITS

A message from the CEO

DEAR EXPLORER,

At Xanterra Travel Collection®, we believe travel should do more than simply take you somewhere new — it should bring you closer. Closer to the natural world, to history and culture, to your sense of wonder, and to your fellow travelers.

For nearly 150 years, we’ve had the privilege of operating in some of the most iconic and awe-inspiring destinations on Earth. These aren’t just places we work in; they’re places we call home. And our commitment to preserving them runs as deep as our passion for sharing them.

In this issue of Explore Magazine, we bring you stories and experiences from mountains, deserts, oceans, and far-flung corners of the globe. You’ll read about the surreal beauty of Death Valley, where the revitalized Oasis at Death Valley offers both comfort and contrast within 3.4 million acres of protected wilderness. You’ll discover how the Grand Canyon Railway’s pioneering zero-emission locomotive is reimagining a classic American journey. And you’ll get a first look at the newest additions to Windstar’s fleet—Star Seeker and Star Explorer—designed to navigate some of the world’s most remarkable and remote coastlines.

But we don’t stop there.

We’ve gathered stories of travel by foot, bike, rail, and ship — across landscapes both familiar and unexpected. You’ll find inspiration in trails less traveled, itineraries with heart, and destinations you may not have considered — each experience curated to bring you closer: to nature, to culture, to community, and maybe even to a different side of yourself.

Whether you’re drawn to wide-open landscapes, tucked-away retreats, or once-in-a-lifetime moments at sea, I hope this issue sparks something in you — a desire to see more, feel more, and travel with meaning.

A World of Unforgettable Experiences® awaits. Where will your wanderlust take you?

With gratitude,

Autumn Fawn

MULE WRANGLER AUTUMN FAWN

GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK

For Autumn Fawn, the Grand Canyon isn’t just a backdrop — it’s a living, breathing office, millions of years in the making. Originally from Oregon, she now calls this vast, rugged wonder home. After nearly three decades as a hairdresser, Autumn followed a different trail: In 2024, she and her husband moved to Grand Canyon Village so she could embrace her true calling — guiding mule rides along the canyon’s sun-dappled trails.

“Mules are a lot easier to ride and more trustworthy than horses,” she says, “and that’s why they’ve become such an iconic part of Xanterra’s Grand Canyon trips.”

She begins her days before dawn, rising at 4 a.m. to prepare for the day. By 6 a.m. she’s at the barn, brushing and saddling a team of anywhere from 12 to 24 mules, each with its own personality. The rides range from two to eight hours, winding through sandstone cliffs, whispering pines, and golden light that shifts with every step.

“I love telling people that every morning I go to work in my office, which is hundreds of miles long and millions of years old,” she says. “A lot of the guests I guide have spent their lives wanting to come here, and it’s a privilege for me to make their dreams come true.”

RED BUS JAMMER

DAVE CARL

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

After 35 years in an Oregon steel mill, Dave Carl never expected to start a new chapter. But a 2007 trip to visit his son, Jeff, at Glacier National Park changed everything.

“It was a bucket-list trip, and when I took one of the famous Red Bus tours and encountered the park’s magnificent peaks and valleys, I realized I wanted to move here with my wife, Pattie.”

Dave dreamed of becoming a “Jammer” — driving one of the park’s vintage Red Buses that have toured Glacier’s wilderness since 1914.

And 10 years later, he and Pattie relocated to Montana. After earning his commercial driver’s license and studying the park’s history, Dave became a proud Jammer (so-called because of the sound the buses’ unsynchronized transmissions used to make when climbing steep roads).

Though the buses now have automatic transmissions, the thrill of driving a piece of history remains. At 74, Dave says, “Some tours last more than eight hours, but I never get tired. I try to make each one the very best for my passengers.

“And before going home I love washing my bus and anticipating the next day of driving through paradise. It’s like I’m on a wonderful vacation!”

Katerina Bacevicius

TRIP DESIGNER KATERINA BACEVICIUS

VERMONT, U.S. (BUT YOU WILL FIND HER ALL OVER THE WORLD!)

“I’ve learned to do the waltz in Vienna, released baby sea turtles into the ocean in Costa Rica, and mingled with peacekeepers in Jerusalem,” says Katerina Bacevicius, whose job developing tours for Country Walkers and VBT Bicycling Vacations has taken her to 36 countries and territories. South Africa and Iceland rank among her favorites. “It’s fun looking for the off-the-beaten-path moments that make our tours so special.”

Growing up loving the outdoors, Katerina started studying wildlife biology but soon switched to tourism and recreation management. “I realized I wanted to connect other people to the great outdoors,” she says.

That passion serves her well in a role where she refreshes tours every few years and creates new ones — a process that can take up to 28 months. Studying maps, scouting hotels, and working with tourism boards all come naturally to her.

While constant travel might wear others out, Katerina recharges at home in Vermont with “staycations.”

“I love this state, and when I’m not hiking or snowboarding, I occasionally give talks at colleges. It’s a privilege to open up the world to people, and maybe inspire others to follow suit.”

PHOTOGRAPHY GUIDE

DOUG HILBORN

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

Doug Hilborn’s passion for photography took him from his childhood home in Fargo, North Dakota, to photography school in Washington State — but it was a visit to his sister in Yellowstone that truly changed his life.

After a few years waiting tables, he put his photography skills to good use by developing a five-hour photo tour out of Lake Yellowstone Hotel. Within a few seasons, guests were capturing once-in-a-lifetime images in droves.

That was 37 years ago. Now 63, Doug never tires of taking groups out at sunrise to photograph the wildliferich Hayden Valley and the north shore of Yellowstone Lake. “Early morning is when animals frolic, steam rises from the lake, and nearby thermal features are active — unique moments for the camera,” he says. “Plus, there are almost no mosquitos at daybreak.”

In winter, he guides snow coach tours — the best way to navigate deep snow and capture Yellowstone’s beauty.

As one of only three photo guides in the region, Doug is familiar with every nook and cranny — and it never gets old. “I’ve seen the rainbow colors in the mist of the lower falls of the Yellowstone River over a thousand times and it’s always magical!” Doug says. “I really do have the best job in the world.”

Xanterra Travel Collection® Sustainability and Community Support Around the Globe

Guests of Xanterra Travel Collection® play a meaningful role in helping us protect and preserve our world .

When guests embark on an adventure with Xanterra Travel Collection®, they’re not just exploring far-flung locales — they’re becoming part of something greater. These journeys are about more than discovering new destinations; they’re also about giving back to the environment and local communities in meaningful, lasting ways.

Xanterra’s cruise and tour companies dedicate time and funding to reducing pollution, conserving water, transitioning to renewable energy, addressing climate change, and preserving local cultures through community initiatives. By choosing to travel with us, our guests join us on a shared mission to deliver Legendary Hospitality with a Softer Footprint® and help fund a wide range of meaningful, lasting projects.

Here are just a few of the initiatives that guests help make possible, all through the simple act of choosing to travel with us.

1. United States: On the Trail

Sustainability starts close to home for Country Walkers, with support for the Green Mountain Club — stewards of Vermont’s iconic 272-mile Long Trail, America’s oldest longdistance hiking path. For more than a century, the trail has offered space for connection, adventure, and a lasting bond with the land.

By choosing to travel with Country Walkers, guests contribute to the maintenance and preservation of this cherished landscape. Donations to the Green Mountain Club enable professional trail crews to conduct highly skilled projects and maintain 70

backcountry overnight sites and facilities, including managing the composting process at 75 backcountry privies, ensuring hiker comfort, and protecting the local ecosystem.

2. Nepal: From Endless Treks to a Healthier Future

Water is the essence of life. Yet an estimated 700 million people around the world lack access to the clean water they need for drinking, cooking, bathing, and growing food. That’s why Country Walkers and VBT Bicycling Vacations are proud partners of the nonprofit organization Wine to Water.

Since 2004, Wine to Water has delivered sustainable water solutions to regions in dire need. With support from Country Walkers, the organization helped drill wells and connect eight remote communities in Nepal to clean water sources. The impact has been transformative: Long treks across mountainous terrain are no longer necessary, children can spend more time in school, women are taking on greater roles in their communities, and waterborne illnesses have decreased. Every journey with Country Walkers and VBT Bicycling Vacations helps continue this lifechanging work, bringing essential support to communities in need.

3. French Polynesia: Reef Restoration Coral reefs are among the most diverse

1 8 3

ecosystems on Earth, yet conservationists estimate that about half have already been lost. Beginning in 2022, Windstar Cruises partnered with Mo’oreabased Coral Gardeners —a group that revives reef ecosystems by growing and planting resilient corals—to support the restoration of coral reefs in French Polynesia.

Thanks to the support of travelers choosing Windstar Cruises, over 4,000 corals have been adopted through the Adopt a Coral program. In 2024, Windstar also established a rope nursery off the coast of Mo’orea, housing 360 coral fragments from eight species across three genera to promote genetic and species biodiversity. These corals are scheduled to be out-planted onto a reef in 2026.

4. United Kingdom: Stewardship in Cornwall Country Walkers proudly supports the Cornwall Wildlife Trust by making a donation on behalf of each guest on this tour. This region’s Atlantic coastline is rich in marine biodiversity, but it also faces growing threats — from habitat loss and invasive species to entanglement in fishing gear and increasing incidents of dolphin strandings.

The Cornwall Wildlife Trust works year-round to protect these fragile ecosystems through its Living Seas program. Their efforts include conducting diving surveys to monitor seabeds, collecting wildlife sightings through the Seaquest Southwest project, and mapping intertidal habitats along the coast. It’s practical, hands-on conservation

that helps ensure Cornwall’s coastal environment remains healthy and resilient.

5. Cambodia: Laptops for Locals

Local guides are vital to once-in-a-lifetime guest experiences — and their efforts beyond tourism are often deeply inspiring. Take Cambodia-based tour guide Sengchonn Ul (known as June), a teacher by profession. During the COVID-19 lockdowns, June began offering free private classes to villagers who had lost their jobs — personally covering the cost of all learning materials.

Over nearly four decades, guests’ choices have helped make a lasting impact on strengthening Tahiti’s culture and economy. A key part of this commitment is sourcing locally. All of Windstar’s sailings in Tahiti contribute approximately $1.9 million USD annually to the local economy. Additionally, nearly 40% of the supplies for Windstar’s ships come from local producers. In 2024 alone, this included 42 tons of vegetables and fruits, 40 kilograms of vanilla, three tons of fish, and 630 cases of local beverages. 6 4 5 7 2

When VBT Bicycling Vacations learned that June wanted to launch an IT program but lacked the equipment, the company provided two rounds of funding. The result? June purchased a dozen laptops, and today his students are gaining

essential computer and English skills to help them qualify for jobs in the hospitality sector.

6. South Africa: Protecting the Bees

Unlike many countries where most honeybees are hived, roughly 90% of South Africa’s honeybees still live in the wild — a vital factor in preserving biodiversity and one reason the Cape region hosts the most diverse floral kingdom in the world.

Recognizing that such natural wonders inspire travelers, VBT Bicycling Vacations proudly supports Ujubee, an organization that has built a network of conservation projects and global collaborative initiatives to protect bees. Thanks to the collective support of our community of travelers, Ujubee’s work is already yielding results. One example: The City

of Cape Town has adopted new landscape cultivation techniques that improve pollination for wildflowers, helping ensure future generations of honeybees can thrive.

7. Italy: Mountain Rescue Safety initiatives make tourism in rugged terrain possible. That’s why Country Walkers donates on behalf of its travelers to Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico della Campania, a mountain rescue team on Italy’s Amalfi Coast. These donations are vital. The trails and ridges of the Sorrento Peninsula above the coast are vast and sparsely populated, and it’s primarily local volunteers—with intimate knowledge of the terrain— who carry out rescues. Our guests help ensure that these life-saving services remain available, offering a safer experience for all adventurers.

8. Tahiti: Sourcing in Paradise

For the past 37 years, Windstar has introduced travelers to the magic of Tahiti. As they explore its stunning landscapes, Windstar ensures their presence benefits the region at the same time.

• 33.9% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from 2014 to 2021

• Reduce water use by 5% per year (equating to a 31% reduction between 2014 and 2021)

• Divert 80% of waste from landfills through recycling, composting, and reuse

• 70% of food and beverage sourced locally and sustainably

• Eliminate single-use plastics by 2030

• First financial supporter of the Northern Great Plains Regenerative Grazing Project

• Ensure future generations have the same privilege of visiting and enjoying the special places that we are fortunate to own or operate

4 THE BEST VACATION YOU NEVER PLANNED

Incredible adventures that will make time stand still.

Strolling through ancient, sun-kissed towns, and feeling the tug of the tide in warm, turquoise waters. Uncovering rich history on a captivating pilgrimage, or embracing the infinite across 3,471 square miles of wilderness — the best vacations happen when you let curiosity lead, and trust that around every corner, a new adventure awaits.

The hidden gems of Croatia’s Dalmatian Islands, Spain’s storied Camino de Santiago, soul-stirring adventures along the southern edge of Colorado’s Rockies, and a rare, immersive way to experience the world’s first national park — these are just a few journeys best savored when every detail is beautifully orchestrated.

All that’s left is to surrender to the magic of the moment.

Here, achingly beautiful coastlines once explored by the ancient Greeks, or towering canyons that have whispered secrets for millennia, remind you that there are still places where time stands still.

Xanterra Travel Collection® makes the experience seamless — fabulous accommodations, delicious meals, and stress-free transportation all thoughtfully taken care of. From there, the choice is yours: Explore Europe’s treasures on perfectly planned, off-the-beatenpath adventures, indulge in all-inclusive luxury in vast natural landscapes, or surrender to the magic of your surroundings and wander at will.

Each destination offers its own kind of wonder — unexpected, unforgettable, and ready to surprise you.

1The ancient Greeks first explored the Dalmatian Islands thousands of years ago, establishing walled towns, spas, and vineyards. Yet the islets, hidden caves, and coves of Brač, Korčula, and Hvar, still harbor areas few have fully experienced.

THREE WAYS YOU’LL EXPLORE CROATIA’S COAST WITH VBT:

• BY PRIVATE YACHT – With the ability to sail in locations that larger ships cannot access, guests won’t spend half of their vacation transferring from one island to another on ferries. The yacht allows VBT the ability to drop anchor for guests to explore the area

CROATIA BY BIKE & BOAT: SPLIT & THE DALMATIAN ISLANDS WITH VBT BICYCLING VACATIONS
CROATIA

seamlessly. This is island-hopping at its most intimate.

• BY BIKE – Cycle a new island nearly every day — exploring a world-famous winery on the Pelješac Peninsula, an olive farm on Brač, and the medieval charm of Hvar’s Stari Grad. Ride along sunlit shores, through fragrant groves, and into quiet villages, experiencing the natural beauty from every angle. VBT handles all logistics and provides the bikes (E-bikes are a favorite), you set the pace.

• BY FOOT – Mingle with locals at Hvar’s bustling harbor or the charming, walled town of Korčula. Visit one of Brač’s last remaining stonecutter schools, then kick off your shoes to feel the crunch of pebbles at Bijela kuća beach. And for a true taste of the island, enjoy an olive tasting at one of the famous olive farms. Every

step of this meticulously planned itinerary reveals a new facet of this paradise, bringing you once-in-alifetime moments that could not be replicated if you visited the coasts of Croatia on your own.

AND WHEN THE DAY ENDS…

As the sun sets, your private yacht’s onboard chef will reveal the secrets of Croatian cuisine, weaving together Greek, Roman, and Mediterranean influences. Indulge in a captivating dinner, expertly paired with Dalmatian wines, as the flavors of the coast linger long after the last bite.

A Decade of Delicious

We sat down with the minds behind the culinary magic aboard Windstar Cruises, Executive Chef Georg Pfandl and Culinary Director Thorsten Sengutta, to learn more about Windstar’s Culinary Cruises, the brand’s exclusive partnership with the James Beard Foundation, and the new onboard restaurant Basil + Bamboo.

Q

What is the nature of your partnership with the James Beard Foundation?

TS: It is a very special partnership, that is now in its 10th year. We host three or four James Beard chefs on board each year and they create unique dishes to feature on a particular cruise. Those new recipes, created specially for Windstar, will remain on board in our restaurants all year.

Q What goes into planning the menus for a Windstar Culinary Cruise, and what makes each experience unique?

TS: The James Beard guest chef creates the menu and all of the recipes for a specific cruise three months in advance. The Windstar team gathers the ingredients and learns the recipes from the chef before rolling them out. The guest chef will create their menu to match the itinerary, making the experience a true cultural culinary connection.

GP: For example, in the South Pacific we will feature Poisson Crum, a Tahitian ceviche with local fish, coconut, and more. In the Mediterranean we cover all the classics. In Spain we may present paella, in Portugal the custard tartlets, or if we go to France, you may have a coq au vin.

Q Who are the featured chefs on Windstar Culinary Cruises and how do they interact with the guests?

TS: Each Culinary Cruise features at least two cooking demonstrations with the James Beard chef, where guests can speak with them and share time in the kitchen. And then

the recipe from that demonstration will be featured on the evening menu, and guests can enjoy the recipe at dinner.

GP: Guests also have the opportunity to shop with the chef in small groups at local markets in the ports. It’s especially fun for guests to shop locally sourced ingredients with the chef, as they explain the ingredients, what they are looking for, and how it reflects local cuisine. Some markets are very large — like Valencia or Barcelona. But in the Caribbean or South Pacific they can be very small. It is a different experience every time.

Q From your perspective, how is a Windstar Culinary Cruise different than other culinary focused travel, and what does the James Beard Foundation represent to you?

GP: For us, it is amazing to work with these celebrity chefs from diverse cultures and backgrounds. As professional chefs, we want to always be learning and growing in our work, and this partnership gives us a chance to learn from some of the greatest chefs in the world. These are James Beard finalists

and the cream of the crop in our industry. We can widen our horizons so much and share the experience with world-renowned chefs.

WINDSTAR CRUISES is proud to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of their exclusive partnership with the James Beard Foundation.

The small-ship experience gives guests a personal connection to the chef and cuisine. The large ships can’t do this. With our size we can really get local cuisine. We are not cooking 5,000 portions, we are cooking 100, so it stays authentic and real.

“These are James Beard finalists and the cream of the crop in our industry.” — George Pfandl

QWe’re really excited about the new Windstar restaurant, Basil + Bamboo! What can you tell us about it?

TS: Yes! Our new in-house AsianMediterranean concept went live in February and is opening on the Star Class ships. It is always good to be creative and flexible, and an exciting opportunity for us to create the recipes and an entire new restaurant concept from the ground up.

GP: We are also creating a new cookbook to celebrate the 10-year partnership with the James Beard Foundation, featuring our favorite recipes and chefs from the past decade. We are very excited about that, and it’s fun to see them all pulled together in one place.

PRO TIP

Plan your night sky trip around the moon. Check the lunar calendar and find a stretch of time that coincides with the new moon to ensure the darkest sky possible and maximize the stars!

STARSTRUCK

Three Dark

Sky Parks

that will leave you in awe.

Inspiring. Breathtaking. Humbling. It’s an experience you’ll never forget. And an experience impossible to describe. To stand under a clear night sky in total and true darkness and witness the vast expanse of stars with the Milky Way streaking above is a singular and increasingly rare moment in one’s life.

Light pollution in populated areas is so prevalent that we hardly notice the night sky in our daily lives, perhaps dotted with a handful of stars and a familiar constellation when we’re lucky. Created in 2016, the World Atlas of Night Sky Brightness now estimates that more than 80 percent of the world’s population—and 99 percent of Americans and Europeans—live under artificial sky glow.

In fact, light pollution has become so common across the globe that places without it are now recognized for their purity and lack of light interference. DarkSky International, a nonprofit organization formerly known as the International Dark-Sky

Association, certifies these areas as Dark Sky Parks and works to protect them from encroaching light pollution.

Fortunately, it’s possible to experience the wonder of the true night sky without adventuring to the furthest reaches of the globe. Three of the best places in the United States are within our national parks, easily accessible with lodging and amenities at the ready. Death Valley National Park in California; Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona; and Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho, are all certified as Dark Sky Parks, offering a safe and simple way to witness the spectacle of a truly starry night.

DEATH VALLEY NATIONAL PARK

1

Death Valley National Park

Set 282 feet below sea level in the remote desert between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Death Valley National Park is designated as a Gold Tier Dark Sky Park, the highest level awarded, due to exceptionally clear skies and efforts to minimize light pollution in the area. It’s no coincidence that several scenes from the Star Wars movie series were filmed here. Standing under a clear night sky in Desolation Canyon is an interstellar experience.

Located far enough from major cities but close enough for an easy weekend getaway, Death Valley may offer the best stargazing in the continental U.S.

WHERE TO STAY

The Oasis at Death Valley is a world-class retreat with two exceptional hotels: the historic AAA Four-Diamond Inn at Death Valley and the family-friendly Ranch at Death Valley. Following a remarkable $200 million revitalization, this hidden gem awaits you in the heart of Death Valley National Park.

2

Grand Canyon National Park

Your sense of time and space will be forever altered as you marvel at one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World below and the unimaginable expanse of the universe above. With its unrivaled landscape, remote location, and Native American history, Grand Canyon National Park is an easy choice for stargazers and nature fans alike.

The National Park Service offers several astronomy programs, including Ancient Skies — an evening event about the original inhabitants of the area and how they regarded the heavens above as a source of spiritual power and wonder.

WHERE TO STAY

Six unique lodges offer a variety of choices to stay inside the park. From the historic El Tovar Hotel just steps away from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch on the canyon floor, Grand Canyon National Park Lodges has the ideal accommodations for you.

3

Yellowstone National Park

The world’s first national park, Yellowstone, gives us a glimpse into the surreal geology of our own planet, as well as the inexplicable galaxies above. Far removed from any major population center, the night skies at Yellowstone will make even the grandest landscapes seem small.

The easy three-mile drive to Firehole Lake or the drive over Dunraven Pass will help you slip away from the crowds to maximize the experience. Or join a Stars Over Yellowstone evening astronomy walk, held at the Madison Amphitheater, where telescopes are available.

WHERE TO STAY

Book one of the many hotels or cabins throughout the park. Airports at Jackson and Cody, Wyoming, as well as Bozeman, Montana, are the best option for flights, and while there are shuttles available, a car will help you truly experience all there is to see, both day and night.

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK

ON THE WILD SIDE

Three outstanding destinations for unrivaled wildlife viewing.

To see a breaching whale, a soaring bald eagle, bears catching salmon, or a bison up close are unforgettable, awe-inspiring experiences. But authentic and immersive wildlife experiences like this can be hard to come by. Here are three destinations with outstanding wildlife viewing, guaranteed!

Alaska

When you imagine Alaska, you conjure up vast wilderness, blue ice glaciers, towering jagged peaks, and the renowned Alaskan Big Five: moose; Dall sheep; wolves; caribou; and of course enormous black, brown, and polar bears. There is thrilling marine life too, such as humpback and gray whales and pods of voracious orcas. Also puffins, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, and more. Bring binoculars! Most wildlife viewing opportunities on land are

found north of Anchorage in Denali National Park. Spanning 6 million acres, the park is home to massive grizzly bears and the elusive gray wolf. With more coastline than the entire lower 48 states, most visitors explore Alaska by cruise ship in the summer months, especially along the Inside Passage of the southeastern coast between Anchorage and Vancouver, Canada. This remote stretch is replete with wildlife and dotted with hundreds of islands that help block rough seas.

PLAN YOUR TRIP:

Windstar Cruises offers several Alaskan itineraries, ranging from seven to 14 days. Sail aboard the new Star Seeker and experience the yacht’s inaugural season in 2026. With just 224 guests on board, the 10-day Alaskan Splendors itinerary stays close to the shoreline, affording spectacular wildlife viewing. Onboard expedition experts give passengers insight and education about glaciers and wildlife and provide optional Zodiac and kayak tours directly from the ship. The 13-day Alaska and Glacier Bay Cruise with Holiday Vacations combines an epic train ride and a captivating four-night cruise to get you up close to protected wildlife on land near Denali National Park and at sea in Glacier Bay National Park. With a visit to the Iditarod headquarters, panning for gold, and a scenic ride on the Alaska Highway, this tour has it all.

Yellowstone National Park

In 1872, Yellowstone was named the first national park in the world, and in 1978 it was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has 2 million acres of land, 67 species of mammals, 285 species of birds, and otherworldly hydrothermal features like geysers.

Bison, bears, elk, and wolves top the “hope to see” list for many visitors. The 5,000-plus free-ranging bison population is the largest on public land in the world. Most of the year, mature male bison live alone, except during the rut from late July to August, when bulls display their dominance by bellowing, wallowing, and fighting other bulls. In the much less crowded winter season, visitors may spot frost-covered bison warming themselves near hot springs and thermal features.

During the summer, elk can be found in Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley, while the fall rut of bull elk is best experienced at Mammoth Hot Springs, drawing thousands to Yellowstone each year. If you are patient, you just might see wolves and bears!

PLAN YOUR TRIP:

Catch the daily Wake Up to Wildlife morning tour or four-hour Evening Wildlife Encounters from May to October that depart from two historic Yellowstone National Park lodges.

Iceland

Home of the iconic Blue Lagoon, Iceland offers humpback whales, islands teeming with Atlantic puffins, verdant fjords, black sand beaches, lava fields, waterfalls, geysers, ice caverns, volcanoes, and charming “elf houses” called alfhol. Visitors can ride famed Icelandic horses, considered the purest breed of horse in the world. Bird-watchers are enchanted by the private Skálanes nature reserve with over 45 species, including puffins, Arctic terns, and kittiwakes. Seals are often seen on the beaches, while whales and dolphins frolic playfully offshore.

PLAN YOUR TRIP:

Ranging from seven to 21 days, Windstar’s smallship cruise itineraries in Iceland feature up-closeand-personal wildlife and scenic adventures. The seven-day Around Iceland itinerary features glaciers, steaming geothermal pools, waterfalls, ice caverns, and splendid opportunities to view this unique array of wildlife. It also includes a complimentary exclusive cultural performance by local entertainers at the famed Blue Church.

HOW TO CAPTURE A GREAT WILDLIFE SHOT

SHUTTER SPEED: Use a shutter speed of 1/100 of a second for still animals. For moving wildlife, start with 1/500. If the animals are running, try 1/1000. For birds in flight, use a shutter speed of 1/1250 or faster.

ISO SETTINGS: Keep your ISO between 400 and 800. This range helps you shoot quickly enough to freeze motion while maintaining high image quality.

LENS LENGTH: Use a telephoto lens in the 200 to 400mm range to capture close-up shots without disturbing wildlife.

AUTOFOCUS: Avoid manual focus for moving animals. Autofocus is often faster and more accurate for achieving sharp shots.

USE SUPPORT: A tripod or monopod helps stabilize your camera. No tripod? Rest your lens on a rock, bag, or any steady surface.

COMPOSITION: Follow the rule of thirds. Imagine a grid with two vertical and two horizontal lines over your image. Place your subject along these lines or at their intersections to create a balanced feel in your photos.

ELIMINATE DISTRACTIONS: Look out for branches, sticks, or anything that might block or compete with your subject.

TAKE BURSTS: Shoot in short bursts to increase your chances of capturing the perfect moment.

BE PATIENT: Learn about animal behavior. Waiting quietly and observing can lead to more natural and striking photos.

LEAVE NO TRACE: Respect nature. Stay on designated trails, keep your distance, and never bait animals. Allow your lens to do the work.

DESTINATION DEEP DIVE:

New Zealand

The land of the long white cloud is not short on adventures.

New Zealand, or Aotearoa, meaning “the land of the long white cloud” in the language of the Indigenous Māori people, is a country that truly lives up to its name.

Stretching roughly 1,200 miles from top to bottom, its unique geography offers a vast array of landscapes with only a slight shift in latitude. On the North Island, there are lush hills, golden beaches, an expansive volcanic plateau, and rolling vineyards. The South Island unfolds an even more dramatic landscape — clear, blue-water inlets, snow-capped peaks, and wild fjords that seem untouched by time. Here, every turn of the road presents a new discovery, a new connection to the land, its people, and the spirit of adventure that pulses throughout New Zealand. f awe-inspiring nature and vibrant Māori culture.

LAKE MATHESON, WESTLAND TAI POUTINI NATIONAL PARK
“Everywhere you turn in New Zealand, there’s something exciting to do. It’s the gem of the world.”
– Wes Bentley (actor)

And the best way to soak it all in? On foot or by bike (or kayak!).

There’s a reason why New Zealand has been called one of the best hiking destinations on the planet. From hiking along ridgelines to cycling coastal paths, each step (or pedal) brings you closer to the essence of New Zealand. With VBT Bicycling Vacations’ and Country Walkers’ expertise from local guides, you’ll gain a true sense of this island paradise, with its mix of awe-inspiring nature and vibrant Māori culture.

West Coast Natural Wonders

New Zealand’s South Island is a land of contrasts — soaring mountains give way to quiet coves, and dense rainforests

unfold into fertile plains. From west to east, the terrain shifts dramatically, with each landscape more captivating than the last.

This rugged, remote part of New Zealand is best explored with the help of expert local guides. VBT Bicycling Vacations offers a bike-explore-connect style itinerary that blends biking and hiking routes to the island’s most stunning spots, all while being fully supported.

The South Island entices you to step off the beaten track — pedal along forested paths and coastal trails, walk the glaciers to witness their majesty up close, and even learn a bit about glaciology along the way. This is wilderness in its purest form, explored on two feet, two wheels, and wide-open wonder.

Moments that will take your breath away

• Sip award-winning wines among the vines, where every glass tells a story of sun, soil, and craft

• Circle the still waters of Lake Matheson to witness the “View of Views” — a mirrorperfect reflection of Mt. Cook framed by silence and sky

• Glide by kayak through a pristine, wildlife-rich lagoon where nature whispers all around you

• Wander through a glacial valley sculpted by centuries of ice, surrounded by sheer cliffs and rainforest mist

ALONG THE WAY, YOU’LL ENCOUNTER…

…a land that shifts beneath your wheels and walking shoes — leafy boulevards in Christchurch, where you warm up your cycling legs on your e-bike, give way to the wild West Coast, where rainforest whispers and melodic bird call echoes through the misty canopy.

Breathe in the salty tang of the ocean, mingling with coastal scrub — a scent that clings to you as you pedal quiet trails by the sea. In the forests, the air turns damp and earthy, thick with the smell of rain on moss and the ancient hush of towering rimu trees.

At Hokitika Gorge, the water glows an impossible shade of turquoise beneath a canopy alive with birdsong courtesy of beautiful birds found only on this island paradise. High above, on Arthur’s Pass, snow crunches underfoot and kea wheel overhead, their raucous cries echoing across craggy peaks. Listen closely and you might hear the tūī, its song a surreal mix of bell tones and human-like phrases — a

voice from the bush that makes you stop and smile.

Book a helicopter ride and walk to the face of Franz Josef Glacier, where the air is sharp with cold and the ice groans as it shifts. At Lake Matheson, the scent of damp earth rises as you circle still waters that reflect the towering silhouette of Aoraki/Mt. Cook.

Paddle across black water on underground rivers, walk beneath a living ceiling of green, or simply exhale at the wilderness lodge tucked deep among the trees. After dinner, a glowworm walk turns the forest into a bioluminescent starry night sky.

Cycle through golden high country, past fields of sheep, and into the alpine town of Wānaka, where you’re welcomed with a home-cooked lunch at a working farm. And in Arrowtown, the trail winds through gold-rush history and riverside quiet, the scent of wild thyme in the breeze, the mountains standing sentinel as your journey ends — but never quite leaves you.

INSIDE TIP: New Zealanders have wholeheartedly embraced café coffee culture. Order like a Kiwi with a flat white or a long black. For wine lovers, the VBT tour of the South Island features a tasting in the Otago region, where acclaimed wines and dramatic landscapes reveal the distinct character of the area.

Savor the Flavors

Kiwis are passionate about their food, and New Zealand’s culinary scene is as diverse and vibrant as its landscapes. With a focus on fresh, locally sourced ingredients, the country’s food culture invites you to indulge in “pasture-to-plate” experiences that champion sustainability and flavor.

Kai moana—seafood—is a must-try when visiting the city of Christchurch, where seasonal fish and shellfish offer a true taste of the ocean. Local favorites include the subtly sweet snapper and the firm, nutty-flavored gurnard. For a more down-to-earth experience, nothing beats classic, paper-wrapped fish and chips from a charming smalltown shop.

But the flavors don’t stop there. Colorful fruits such as tamarillos, feijoas, and passion fruits are just the beginning of New Zealand’s unique offerings. Refresh yourself with local juices, sodas, or an inventive ice cream, and be prepared to be amazed by the creative flair of Kiwi foodies.

Remember to Slow Down

New Zealand is mostly temperate —think Northern California to the Rockies—but be prepared for some changeable weather and varied terrain when you head outdoors. Pack your favorite layers, hiking boots, and waterproof gear, or shop local brands once you arrive. There’s an amazing amount to do, but the magic often happens when you slow down and follow the rhythm of the place. Ka kite ano! (See you again!)

Embrace Local Traditions

To truly know Aotearoa (New Zealand) is to embrace the living heartbeat of its Indigenous culture. Your trip will offer you a rare opportunity to go beyond the surface and connect deeply with Māori traditions. At your final seaside stay, you’ll meet a local tribal leader who will share stories of Māori history and lead a powerful haka war dance on the beach — a stirring moment that echoes the ancestral strength of this land. Try your hand at te reo Māori — even a simple kia ora can open hearts. And if you stumble on the pronunciation, don’t worry, your guides are there to support you, and your willingness to engage will be warmly embraced.

BEST OF ALL, YOU DON’T HAVE TO SWEAT THE LOGISTICS

Tours of New Zealand with VBT Bicycling Vacations and Country Walkers provide everything you need for a seamless journey — from your custom-fit VBT bike and helmet to expert local leaders, a support vehicle, and luggage transport. On VBT biking tours, voice-guided GPS navigation makes every ride a breeze. Cultural experiences are woven into the itinerary, and a welcome reception sets the tone. Guests also receive branded gear to enjoy during their adventure. All you need to bring is your sense of discovery.

Grand Canyon National Park (ARIZONA)

In Grand Canyon National Park, time and water have sculpted a masterpiece. Stretching 277 miles and plunging more than a mile deep, this vast expanse tells a story nearly 2 billion years in the making. At its widest, the canyon spans 18 miles, an immense divide carved by the Colorado River that winds through its depths, shaping the landscape below. Trails descend from rim to floor, crossing desert plateaus and shaded groves. Inhale, and the crisp air floods your senses — the earthy bite of juniper, the peppery warmth of sage. As dusk settles, the walls glow in fading sunlight, a final farewell to the day before the stars reclaim the sky over 1.2 million acres of untamed beauty.

Sailing with the STARS

Windstar Cruises’ newest ships, Star Seeker and Star Explorer, open up a whole world of exciting new destinations.

There’s something undeniably romantic about the idea of waking up in a new destination every morning, your coffee steaming on a private veranda as the world slowly comes to life around you. Maybe it’s humpback whales breaching in Alaska’s pristine waters, or the soft glow of sunrise illuminating ancient temples along Japan’s coastline. This is the kind of travel that stays with you long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase — and it’s exactly what awaits aboard Windstar’s newest additions to their intimate fleet.

When Star Seeker launches in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026, they’ll represent something genuinely special in the cruise world. Each ship will host just 224 guests, creating an atmosphere that feels more like a floating dinner party with your most interesting friends than a traditional cruise experience. In an industry where so many ships compete to be the biggest on the water, Windstar has gone in the opposite direction, crafting small (yet luxurious) vessels that prioritize connection — with fellow travelers, with destinations, and with the natural world around you. These aren’t just new ships; they’re Windstar’s first-ever Star Class new builds, designed from the ground up to deliver those

transformative travel moments that make you fall in love with exploring the world. Every detail has been considered here. After all, when you’re traveling to some of the planet’s most spectacular destinations, your floating home should enhance the experience, not distract from it.

STAR SEEKER:

ADVENTURE MEETS LUXURY

Star Seeker rooms feel like every item on a cruise-lover’s secret wish list is addressed, starting with infinity windows that can actually open. Suddenly you’re not just looking at the scenery through glass — you’re breathing it in, feeling the ocean breeze, becoming part of the landscape rather than just observing

it. Once you experience that connection to the elements, standard cruise ship rooms will never feel quite the same.

Most of the 112 suites feature either infinity windows or full private verandas, while the two Owner’s suites take this concept even further with wraparound balconies. Think of these exterior spaces as essentially private outdoor living rooms, suspended above the waves. Imagine hosting an intimate dinner party under the stars, or simply enjoying your morning yoga practice with nothing but ocean stretching to the horizon. Pure bliss.

The ship’s social spaces have been designed with the same attention to detail. The cozy Yacht Club Café and lounge strikes

that perfect balance between sophisticated and welcoming — the kind of place where conversations flow as naturally as the expertly crafted cocktails. The spacious spa and fitness facility means you can always find your own peaceful corner, with treatment rooms featuring floor-to-ceiling windows that make the endless blue horizon part of the wellness experience. When Star Seeker begins her Alaska season in May 2026, the itineraries read like a love letter to the North. Seven-, eight-, 10-, 11-, and 12-day cruises between Juneau or Seward, Alaska, and Vancouver will include scenic cruising through the legendary Inside Passage. The ship’s Signature Expeditions include Zodiac and kayak tours led by onboard

naturalists who bring decades of expertise to every outing.

Imagine drifting silently through Tracy Arm Fjord in a kayak, so close to a tidewater glacier that you can practically hear it breathing. Or cycling the remote coastal roads around Sitka, where the only traffic might be a curious harbor seal checking out your progress. The Marina at the stern transforms the ship into your personal aquatic playground, allowing you to explore the pristine waters up close.

The staff-to-guest ratio of 1:1.5 means personalized attention extends to every aspect of your journey. Your preferences are remembered, your name is known, and somehow, they always seem to anticipate exactly what you need

before you realize you need it.

After Alaska, Star Seeker heads to Japan for the fall, offering 10-day Grand Japan cruises between Tokyo and Kobe. These itineraries promise cultural immersion in destinations like Takamatsu and Kagoshima — places where you can experience authentic Japanese culture without the crowds. September through November offers some of the year’s most beautiful weather in Japan: The fall foliage is as breathtaking as the cherry blossoms visitors enjoy during springtime voyages.

But Star Seeker ’s cultural exploration doesn’t stop with Japan. In 2026, the ship will also venture into Southeast Asia with a program that redefines what cruise experiences in this vibrant region

can be. Picture sailing up the river to dock right in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City, or accessing hidden Thai gems like Krabi and Ko Yao Noi that larger ships simply can’t reach. The program offers two core itineraries: a 10-day Vietnam, Cambodia, and Thailand cruise with overnights in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi, and an 11-day Thailand, Singapore, and Malaysia voyage that stops at six Thai ports. Unlike typical cruises that start in Singapore and make brief stops at industrial ports, Star Seeker ’s intimate size enables genuine cultural immersion, with optional Cruise Tours extending your journey to places like Chiang Mai’s ancient temples or Cambodia’s legendary Angkor Wat.

STAR EXPLORER: EXPANDING THE HORIZON

Star Explorer , launching in December 2026, will be Star Seeker ’s sister ship in all the best ways — the same thoughtful design, the same intimate scale, but with itineraries that venture into different

RENDERING OF STAR SEEKER, ALASKA

corners of the world. Early plans suggest local Mediterranean voyages that promise to redefine what it means to truly experience a destination.

Imagine starting your morning with gentle yoga on deck as you sail past the dramatic cliffs of the Amalfi Coast, then spending the afternoon in cultural immersion experiences that go far beyond typical tourist activities. These might include exploring ancient Roman ruins in Naples with local archaeologists who share fascinating historical insights, or food tours in Sicily that take you into family-run trattorias where traditional recipes have been lovingly preserved for centuries, all while enjoying the mild Mediterranean winter weather with temperatures hovering around 70 degrees.

The focus on authentic cultural exchange means the chance to interact with local communities in ways that benefit everyone involved — perhaps visiting cultural centers where your presence supports local artisans, or participating in cooking classes where you learn not just techniques but the stories behind traditional dishes. Though of course, as wonderful as the food at these ports can be, there are plenty of culinary delights to be found onboard, too.

A CULINARY JOURNEY AT SEA

The dining experience aboard these ships deserves its own love letter. As the Official Cruise Line of the James Beard Foundation,

Windstar has elevated shipboard cuisine to something truly extraordinary. Star Seeker and Star Explorer will each offer multiple high-end dining venues that make choosing where to eat almost as exciting as deciding which shore excursion to book.

The reimagined main dining restaurant, Amphora, serves as the ships’ culinary heart, where regionally inspired menus showcase the flavors of your destinations. Star Grill offers elevated comfort food with a view, while Basil + Bamboo focuses on Mediterranean and Asian-inspired cuisine that reflects the ships’ most popular destinations.

What makes the dining experience even more special is the opportunity to dine al fresco at many of these restaurants. There’s something magical about enjoying expertly prepared cuisine while ocean breezes carry the scent of salt air and distant shores. The James Beard Foundation partnership also means guest chef appearances and curated menus that transform dinner into an event, with renowned culinary artists sharing their passion for ingredients and techniques.

And then there are Windstar’s famous deck barbecues — legendary events that somehow manage to be both elegantly prepared and delightfully casual. Picture the crew carving up a succulent whole-roasted pig next to overflowing paella dishes, and suddenly you’re at what feels like the world’s most exclusive beach party. The smell of grilling seafood

mixes with ocean air, champagne flows freely, and the setting sun provides better entertainment than any stage show.

MASTERING THE ART OF THOUGHTFUL TRAVEL

What strikes one most about these new ships is how they embody a philosophy of travel that prioritizes depth over breadth, quality over quantity. Windstar’s approach of seeking out smaller, more exclusive ports means your experiences won’t be carbon copies of everyone else’s vacation photos.

The onboard naturalists and cultural experts aren’t just along for the ride — they’re integral to the experience. These are people who have dedicated their lives to understanding the destinations you’re visiting, and their passion is infectious. Whether they’re explaining the behavior of sea otters you’re watching from your veranda or providing context for ancient traditions you’ll witness in a Japanese village, their expertise transforms sightseeing into genuine learning.

The expedition equipment available on Star Seeker opens up experiences that simply aren’t possible from larger vessels. Those Zodiac boats become your ticket to adventures in places where no cruise ship has ever been — like the narrow fjords where towering glaciers meet the sea. The kayaks let you explore at your own pace, whether you want to paddle quietly through a kelp forest or race alongside playful sea lions.

Each ship’s library has been carefully curated with books about the destinations you’re visiting, allowing you to deepen your

BASIL + BAMBOO

understanding of the places you’re exploring. There’s something wonderful about reading about Japanese tea ceremony traditions while actually sailing toward ports where you’ll experience them firsthand, or learning about glacier formation while watching one calve into the sea from your veranda. The suites have been designed with those details that make a real difference: queen-size beds with genuinely luxurious linens, L’Occitane bath amenities that make every morning feel like a spa day, waffle weave robes that are so comfortable you’ll want to wear them to dinner, and mirrored closets with ample storage for longer voyages. The interactive TVs offer entertainment for quiet evenings when you want to tune out the world, while the vanity areas with magnifying mirrors and comfortable chairs make getting ready feel civilized even when you’re anchored in the middle of nowhere. Thoughtful layouts maximize every inch of space while maintaining that feeling of luxurious comfort. Fresh fruit greets you upon arrival, setting the tone for the level of attention you’ll experience throughout your voyage. And there’s actual drawer space, a small but crucial detail that makes longer voyages feel like extended stays rather than camping expeditions. What really sets these accommodations apart is how they’ve been designed to blur the line between indoor and outdoor living. Those infinity windows aren’t just a clever marketing term; they genuinely transform your relationship with the ocean. When opened, they create a seamless flow between your private sanctuary and the endless horizon beyond. You might

find yourself leaving them open all night just to fall asleep to the sound of waves and wake up to sea spray and sunrise. And the variety of suite configurations means there’s something perfect for every type of traveler. Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary and want one of those spectacular Owner’s suites with wraparound balconies, or you’re a solo traveler who just wants a peaceful retreat with a perfect view, the ship’s design ensures everyone gets their own slice of ocean paradise.

The hot tub, pool, and lounging areas scattered throughout each ship ensure you can always find the perfect spot for your mood. Want to socialize with fellow travelers while soaking under the stars? There’s a hot tub for that. Prefer to read quietly while watching for wildlife? There’s a secluded corner with your name on it. The ships’ designers understood that different moments call for different settings, and they’ve provided options for every inclination.

Pre- and post-cruise land extensions available with many itineraries allow you to extend these meaningful experiences even further. The Denali add-ons for Alaska cruises, for instance, mean you can combine the intimacy of small-ship cruising with the grandeur of one of America’s most spectacular national parks. These extensions aren’t just add-ons; they’re carefully crafted experiences that

complement and enhance your cruise, creating a cohesive journey that might span two weeks but feels like a lifetime of memories.

REDEFINING WHAT A CRUISE CAN BE

These ships represent more than just new additions to Windstar’s fleet — they’re proof that travel can be both luxurious and meaningful, comfortable and adventurous. The fact that you can have a nightcap on your private veranda while watching northern lights dance across the Alaskan sky, then spend the afternoon learning traditional crafts from local artisans, all without ever feeling like part of a tourist

herd, feels like the kind of travel experience that changes how you see the world.

What’s particularly exciting about these new ships is how they represent Windstar’s commitment to sustainable and responsible travel. The smaller passenger count means less impact on the destinations you visit, while the focus on cultural exchange and local partnerships ensures that your travels benefit the communities that welcome you. This isn’t just about seeing the world; it’s about engaging with it in ways that are meaningful for everyone involved.

The timing of these ship launches couldn’t be better for travelers who have been dreaming of these destinations. Alaska cruising on Star

Seeker will run from May through August, capturing the region during its most spectacular season when wildlife is most active and the midnight sun creates those magical golden hours that seem to last forever. Weather conditions are ideal for both scenic cruising and active exploration, whether you’re kayaking among icebergs or hiking through pristine wilderness.

The anticipation for these ships is already building among travelers who understand that the best journeys aren’t just about checking destinations off a list, but about creating connections, with places, with cultures, and with fellow travelers who share their passion for authentic experiences. There’s

something special about being part of a ship’s inaugural seasons, about being among the first to experience what promises to be a new standard in intimate luxury cruising.

Reservations for Star Seeker ’s Caribbean, Alaska, Japan, and Southeast Asia voyages are now available, with her inaugural sailing season beginning in December 2025. Star Explorer has begun booking. For travelers who want to be among the first to experience these remarkable new ships, the opportunity is now.

Sometimes the most profound journeys are the ones that remind us why we fell in love with travel in the first place. Star Seeker and Star Explorer promise to do exactly that — one unforgettable sunrise, one meaningful cultural exchange, one perfectly crafted moment at a time.

Built in 1927 by the Pacific Coast Borax Company, The Inn began as a bold effort to rescue a railroad — and ended up creating an icon of desert elegance.

A Desert Icon BLOOMS

A $200 million transformation elevates The Oasis at Death Valley into an extraordinary retreat unlike anything else.

Just beyond the Nevada-California border at Death Valley Junction, Highway 190 stretches west in a nearly pin-straight line. Flanked by low rocky slopes, scrub, and brush, the view unfolds, unchanging — until a bend at 30 miles in, when terra-cotta rooftops appear in the distance. Closer still, and palm groves appear, like a welcome mirage on a parched horizon. Welcome to The Oasis at Death Valley.

Surrounded by 3.4 million acres of protected desert, the resort is one of the few places to stay within the boundaries of Death Valley National Park — an outpost of comfort in one of the most extreme environments on Earth. And now, following a $200 million revitalization, this historic destination has been beautifully reimagined. From meticulously upgraded accommodations to vibrant new dining venues and expanded recreational offerings, The Oasis has truly entered an exciting new era — elevating the experience for firsttime visitors and longtime guests alike.

As the largest national park in the lower 48 states, Death Valley is a landscape of extremes. Its salt flats, sand dunes, and volcanic rock formations evoke another planet entirely (NASA even tests Mars rovers here). When rain does come, it can spark a fleeting explosion of wildflowers before the desert returns to its otherworldly stillness.

The Oasis at Death Valley lies at the heart of this spectacle, and “Oasis” isn’t just a metaphor. The resort is a cradle of green in a stark landscape, built atop two natural mineral springs.

This helps explain why the destination has long been a draw, from the borax mining boom of the late 1800s to 1927, when the 12-room Furnace Creek Inn first opened. As the property grew, so did its mystique, luring Hollywood icons like Marlon Brando, Clark Gable, and Carole Lombard, who came in search of solitude, sun, and cinematic scenery.

Today, the revitalized Oasis at Death Valley stands not just as a destination but as a vibrant gateway, magnetizing a diverse mix of visitors eager for everything from serene solitude to thrilling adventure, all set against the awe-inspiring backdrop of Death Valley’s vast wilderness. Here’s a closer look at what’s new and what’s on the horizon.

A reimagined oasis for first-timers and longtime guests

Your Desert Home, Reimagined

LUXURY RV ACCOMMODATIONS COMING SOON! THE RV RESORT AT DEATH VALLEY

Big news for road trippers: The Oasis at Death Valley is preparing to debut a brand-new luxury RV resort, the first of its kind within the park and the first luxury RV resort inside a national park. Set to break ground in October 2025 and welcome guests by mid-2026, the resort will offer 50 thoughtfully designed sites with full water, sewer, and electrical hookups.  Each site will feel like a private desert retreat, with shade structures, curated landscaping, and comfortable seating areas. Guests can expect upscale amenities like high-speed Wi-Fi, pickleball courts, a dedicated dog park, shuffleboard, and a well-stocked camp store. Even more exceptional? RV visitors

will enjoy access to all amenities at the resort, a rare offering in a region where most RV sites offer little more than a patch of gravel.

THE INN AT DEATH VALLEY: HERITAGE LUXURY WITH A SURREAL BACKDROP

A Four-Diamond, AAA-rated haven, The Inn at Death Valley remains a desert icon, a nearly century-old hideaway where Mission-style architecture meets peak luxury.

Now, after a sweeping transformation, The Inn has been meticulously reimagined, elevating every aspect of the guest experience to unprecedented heights. Every corner— from its 66 guest rooms to the lobby and historic dining room—has been refreshed with care while preserving its storied heritage. Designers looked to the property’s original 1920s

architectural drawings for guidance, restoring key details to honor its legacy.

Some of the most exciting additions are the 22 luxurious private casitas that offer guests even more seclusion, each outfitted with a living room, wet bar, and personal golf cart for exploring the grounds in style.

Just steps away, the hotel’s legendary palm-lined, spring-fed swimming pool retains its signature stonework and arches, while new cabanas, wellness spa, and pool bar enrich the experience. Thanks to the natural heating properties of the underground spring, the water here is always a toasty 87 degrees Fahrenheit, ever-refreshing and infused with natural minerals, an icon in its own right.

THE RANCH AT DEATH VALLEY: A FAMILY-FRIENDLY GATEWAY TO ADVENTURE

A few minutes up the road is The Ranch at Death Valley, The Inn’s familyfriendly, adventure-focused counterpart. Channeling a refreshed midcentury vibe, its 275 guest rooms sit next to The Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley, with easy access to the property’s pool, sports courts, and playground.

As part of the revitalization, The Ranch received a range of upgrades, including 80 cozy cottages with private patios, plus an Old West-style Town Square, Town Hall and check-in area, general store, restaurant, saloon, and new tavern.

Honoring its working ranch roots, the property showcases Spanish Colonial Revival architecture and features stables offering horseback and carriage rides. The Borax Museum, a local treasure in Town Square, also reopened after a major renovation. With phase two underway, visitors can anticipate a wraparound deck, outdoor grill, and beer garden with live music and dancing.

The Ranch is also the center of activity at The Oasis. Rent 4x4 vehicles, road bikes, or e-bikes to explore the national park, or relax with tennis or pickleball on freshly resurfaced courts. For an easy unwind, grab a floatie and enjoy the refurbished spring-fed pool.

A New Era for Meetings & Events

A CONFERENCE CENTER UNLIKE ANY OTHER

As part of its ongoing renaissance, The Oasis at Death Valley is expanding

its appeal to groups, retreats, and corporate travelers with a striking new conference center on The Ranch’s grounds. Slated for completion by the end of 2026, this facility will offer flexible event space — whether for executive retreats, weddings, wellness weekends, or sit-down dinner.

The goal? To offer a premier destination for events for groups seeking something beyond the ordinary. The meeting space is being designed with big glass walls, offering views of the mountains and the desert. It won’t be the typical conference room found at any big hotel.

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Death Valley National Park—and paired with luxury accommodations, wellness offerings, outdoor adventures, and newly revitalized grounds—this distinctive new center promises truly memorable gatherings.

most challenging, earning a spot on Golf Digest’s list of “America’s 50 Toughest Courses.” (Coyotes sometimes frolic along the sidelines — a convenient excuse for wayward shots.)

Thoughtful updates have enhanced the course’s sustainability and desert character. More than 15 acres of turf have been replaced with native and drought-tolerant plantings — a striking visual shift that conserves water while deepening the connection to the surrounding landscape. Still, thanks to a closed-loop irrigation system that recycles mineral spring water, the fairways remain soft and lush underfoot.

Wildlife thrives here too. A nearby

pond, certified by Audubon International for its role in habitat preservation, draws birds like coots and ibis, while the course itself blends naturally into the environment — a true desert Oasis, made for play.

A New Taste of the Desert

THE DIVERSE DINING OF THE OASIS

With eight distinct venues across The Inn and The Ranch, dining at The Oasis is as diverse as the landscape itself — from elegant chef-driven dinners to laidback, family-friendly fare. And following the revitalization, the experience has never been more inviting.

At The Inn at Death Valley, the complete interior redesign brought new life to the lobby, bar, and the signature Inn Dining Room — now a sophisticated space where white linens, Western artwork, and panoramic views set the stage for standout dishes like Furnace Creek Filet Mignon or Vegetarian Pumpkin Enchiladas. A shaded terrace lets guests sip cocktails while overlooking the desert salt flats and Panamint Mountains.

Over at The Ranch, a newly constructed Town Square has reimagined the heart of the property, bringing a fresh look and lively energy in a Mission California architectural style that nods to its sister property, The Inn. The square includes dining options — including The Last Kind Words Saloon, The Ranch’s signature venue for food and entertainment. Inside, it channels the Old West with mounted taxidermy and a hearty menu of bison burgers, steaks, and ribs.

Families also flock to the 1950s-style Ice Cream Parlor for floats, sundaes, and burgers (including what many consider the best cheeseburger on the property).

For a quicker bite, the 1849 Restaurant at The Ranch offers buffetstyle meals, while the Wild Rose Tavern, next to the golf course, serves pub fare — think burgers, wraps, and beers on tap.

DESERT RITUALS FOR REST AND RENEWAL: THE WELLNESS

Tucked into The Inn grounds is the serene Wellness Sanctuary spa. Here, guests can recharge from the extremes of the desert environment, with treatments that pay tribute to the local

landscape — desert-inspired salt scrubs, reflexology, hot stone massage, and aromatherapy, among others. Signature skin care options combine botanical ingredients from North American cacti with marine plankton extracts chosen for their hydrating properties. Beyond massage and skin care, the Wellness Sanctuary also hosts a rotating program of wellness activities, such as yoga, personal training, and sound baths.

New Experiences Lighting Up the Oasis

The Oasis isn’t just a stunning destination, it’s a vibrant hub for unforgettable experiences all year round. This past May kicked off with a rejuvenating Wellness Weekend that invited guests to unwind and soak up Death Valley’s awe-inspiring beauty.

Summer stargazing nights led by a Caltech scientist brought celestial wonder, and this fall will debut more events to celebrate the region’s local artists, chefs, and vintners.

But that’s just the beginning. Plans are underway for a lively country music festival in 2026 and a Star Wars-themed event on May 4 honoring Death Valley’s iconic role as the fictional desert planet Tatooine in the legendary 1977 film. A whiskeytasting weekend could also be part of the lineup, in keeping with the Western theme and highlighting the area’s strong selection of local and regional distilleries.

Though these events are still in the early stages, they mark an exciting new chapter for The Oasis at Death Valley. The only thing standing between travelers and this freshly polished desert jewel is a reservation.

Cycling the EMERALD ISLE

Exploring the scenic backroads, rich history, and welcoming spirit of Ireland with VBT Bicycling Vacations.

If you are going to Ireland, it’s because you’ve been lured there by your soul, or the Fates, seduced by the green countryside, the stories, the people, the human spirit, hardship, grit, laughs, and, of course, Guinness. One does not go to Ireland to get somewhere else, but to arrive. Stepping onto this land is to awaken the Irish DNA that somehow seems to be in all of us, regardless of ancestry.

Ireland is a land of the senses. It seeps into you by walking on grass, pedaling down back roads, feeling the mist in the air, being kissed by the warm sun, absorbing the endless green fields, and finally touching monoliths older than the pyramids or Stonehenge. You can also somehow actually feel the sorrow, poverty, and inhumanity of the potato famines, respect the hardship of the land, and only admire more the people who persevered.

Then there are the Irish themselves. They know you are here to become living witnesses to this fabled land. This is no living museum. The entire country from Dublin to the hamlets to the Aran Islands are writing history in the future tense, while living in the present and guarding the past.

When my great-grandparents arrived in New York during the last of the famines, they passed down stories of the land they once called their home. The women were immigrants upon arriving in America and indentured servants. They were Americans, but always American Irish.

My son is adopted, and turns out he is about 97.6 percent Irish. So, when he turned 18, it was time to visit Ireland. I had been there once, but my wife and son had never been.

Now, we are intrepid travelers. Global travelers. We only took one tour in our lives and went on a few cruises when our son was younger, given they were the vacations of least resistance. I’ve been to more than 120 countries.

The seven-day adventure started in Cork, which is famed for its street scenes, pubs, music, and of course, just outside of the city, Blarney Castle and the famed Blarney Stone.

But to understand Ireland, to grasp it, is not so easy. It’s elusive. It’s not like going to some of the great cities or regions of Europe. It’s about backroads and places almost not on the map. It’s about being content with oneself and getting lost, and stopping along the way, and reveling in the moment, and thus discovering the people—The Irish—along the way.

So, to my surprise, my wife suggested we take a bike tour of Ireland. We are not cyclists. We bike, on occasion, on flat land. Manhattan flat. Jersey Shore flat. Hilton Head Island flat. Flat flat. So, a bike tour in Ireland, racking up to 30 miles a day for a week with hills, lots of hills, seemed daunting as we reached an age where the government asks one to draw a clock that reads a quarter past 10 during your physical.

We turned to VBT, VBT Bicycling Vacations, a renowned bike touring company based out of Vermont that offers bike tours the world over. Even so, and given we are active and in good health, it seemed like a leap of faith. They educated us on e-bikes.

Electric bikes, or e-bikes, use a nearly silent electric motor to amplify riders’ pedaling power, which helps propel them up those challenging hills or extend the distances they can ride comfortably. Not motorbikes or mopeds, e-bikes provide a boost of poweron-demand while riders are pedaling, to complement their own propulsion and speed. Cyclists can choose from multiple levels of

assistance — or no assistance at all.

Thankfully, what was once impossible is now easily doable due to the technology of e-bikes. VBT’s introduction of e-bikes is the biggest game-changer for people who want to be active or try something different (like a bike tour) but have hill anxiety and like a flat bike world.

So, we bought our padded bike seats and pants, gloves, some rain gear (it is Ireland after all, where you can experience all four seasons in a day), and we went for it.

We booked the seven-day itinerary including round-trip airfare from the U.S. to Dublin and then Cork. It would turn out to be one of the most memorable, and personally satisfying trips of our lives.

The seven-day adventure started in Cork, which is famed for its street scenes, pubs, music, and of course, just outside of the city, Blarney Castle and the famed Blarney Stone. With a centrally located hotel, and a city that’s easy to walk around, it was a great start to rolling into vacation mode. We then rode via coach to Ennis, a delightful town of winding streets,

BLARNEY CASTLE

great pubs, and even a fun public golf course. The chicken pot pie at the Old Ground Hotel was one of the best I’ve ever had, complemented by a Guinness. It was here the group assembled and began the tour, starting with energetic walks along the stunning Cliffs of Moher rising from the Atlantic Ocean.

It was at Lisdoonvarna where we learned to ride our e-bikes and soon we were on our way down country rides, watching surfers riding waves in the Atlantic, and rolling off the miles along the wild and stunning coastline. Along the way were ruins of old abbeys and even monoliths thousands of years old. The pedaling was easy, and the e-bikes made light work of it, allowing us to absorb all that we saw along the way at a leisurely pace.

All of this was well thought through, for it was a preview of the awe that awaited us on our itinerary. VBT and its local guides eased us into it all and fitted us onto our bikes and encouraged us on a few warmup rides. That late afternoon, we learned that there was always a pint of Guinness or Irish whisky if one wanted to toast the day, and evening ahead. We stayed at the charming and peaceful Sheedy’s Country House, a place with all my travel experience I would have never found on my own.

Like I said, we are not really tour people. But our group, who we lived with, ate with, and traveled with, was fascinating and would be an element that created a truly positive and memorable experience. They were eclectic. One was a surgeon from Virginia,

one a widow, a supermarket manager from Pennsylvania, a young dentist from Alaska, a couple whose husband was a former Navy SEAL, a public relations professional from New York, and so on. All different people from all walks of life. And the group bonded quickly, helped each other along the way, and pushed the boundaries of predictable and comfortable worlds. Some had never been on a bike tour, others (the older couple in their late 70s who could out-bike us all) were doing four trips back-to-back and on their 17th VBT tour. Rather impressive.

I think the biggest surprise in Ireland was the food. This was no McCann’s or Blarney Stone on Manhattan. The food was exceptionally fresh, sophisticated, balanced, and delicious. For example, at the Lough Inagh Lodge Hotel in Connemara the menu featured Achill-grown Pacific oysters and Guinness hot and lemon;

roast duck breast with star anise and plum sauce, Killarney lobster, or Irish beef fillet steak with peppercorn sauce.

Of course, there was warm chocolate pudding with butterscotch sauce and vanilla ice cream, or panna cotta with fresh fig and port sauce or just some local cheeses with crackers and fruit.

At the Old Ground Hotel in Ennis, in addition to that great chicken pot pie I mentioned, one could find Asian-style spiced pork belly and mixed leaves, couscous salad with Hoisin and sesame seed salad; or roasted salmon with scallion mash; or wild mushroom risotto or roasted chicken supreme stuffed with pancetta, local cheese in a creamy wild mushroom sauce.

At every hotel, pub and eatery, the food was nothing short of local, abundant, and excellent.

The following morning we were up early, had a hearty breakfast, and started out with the group on a route down country lanes and backroads past old castles, ruins, endless rock walls covered in ivy and wildflowers, and onto the haunting and beguiling landscaped called The Burren, a seemingly endless rock formation that juxtaposes with the greenery of the land. It was here we met our first local expert (I’m always a bit wary of these parts of any trip) but he was truly captivating, almost part of the land shaped by generations, and we pushed off with a deeper understanding of the people and mysteries that swirl around Celtic Ireland. My wife and I were averaging around 25 to 30 miles a day at our pace and doing just fine thanks to the three “booster” speeds on our bikes. We also ate and slept quite well.

The following day we pedaled and explored ancient religious sites and ruins in the pastoral

countryside of Kilfenora. We explored neolithic tombs that drove home how ancient this land is. We rolled into Galway on the west coast of Ireland overlooking the ocean and were greeted by a bustling small city full of music, pubs, and happy people embracing life. Our small yet upscale hotel was ideally situated for exploring the town on our own as much or as little as we wanted. In our case, this would be the one half-day of pouring rain, and, like the Irish, we were prepared, and it made no difference. We learned you can have fun in the Irish rain (whiskey optional).

Honestly, by this point the group was a bit tired, and the people at VBT obviously knew what they were doing, so we woke up and took a short ferry ride to truly remote Ireland, the Aran Islands, a mysterious, ancient stronghold boasting some of the finest prehistoric monuments in all of Europe, including the ancient Druid site of Dun Aengus. With basically one loop road, beaches, and the little town of Kilronan, the group biked or walked at leisure, relaxed a bit, and could feel that this was a place in Ireland older than Ireland itself — full of mystery and myths. Our hotel, a series of small, ultra-modern semiattached units or apartments with sweeping views of the sea and an amazing restaurant, seemed to sum up the endless contradiction and juxtapositions that define Ireland.

By now we understood that while this was an active vacation, it was also a social vacation — one of chemistry, curiosity, new adventures, and learning that getting lost was how one discovered contentment with oneself (but there was relief when you found a fellow cyclist on the road after getting lost for a while). And we all learned that if we did get lost, straggled, or stopped for one too many photos (or a pint too many in the pub), VBT and our trusty

guides were always in a van ready to pick us up or help us along the way. It also helped that our phones, with GPS and maps, showed us the way, even when we begged to differ or just didn’t listen at all.

The next day we ferried back to the mainland and rolled to Rossaveel and Connemara. This leisurely ride featured stunning scenery, the “Wild West” of Ireland, great pubs to relax and linger at, and a plethora of views of beaches, woodlands, farms, peat bogs, and even small mountains. The hotel on this night would be in the middle of nowhere, the Lough Inagh Lodge in Connemara — ancient and wonderful, with great food, a warm hearth, and the ideal view of lakes, mountains, and tranquility.

On the last day, when cycling was now an afterthought and preparing for sun, rain, warmth, and cool breezes became an instinct, we enjoyed perhaps the best ride of them all: a morning trip up to the impressive and intact Kylemore Abbey, along flower-strewn backroads on the mesmerizing Renvyle Peninsula, and wonderful views of the coast where crashing waves mingle with the beaches and coves along the coast.

We would return home via Dublin, an energetic and fabled city. What started out with trepidation ended with a sense of accomplishment and an understanding that seeing the world (or a small part of it) at 10 or 15 miles per hour allows the senses to come alive. We grasped the true nature of Ireland, its people, culture, history, and mystery. It had indeed seeped into our DNA, or in my case, reawakened it. One does not go to Ireland to get somewhere else, but to start the journey of a lifetime.

GRAND CANYON RAILWAY

NEXT STOP? THE FUTURE

A new battery-powered era is dawning on the Grand Canyon Railway, pioneering a cleaner, quieter journey that redefines sustainable travel.

The whistle echoes across the high desert as the vintage locomotive pulls away from Williams, Arizona, its wheels clicking rhythmically against the rails. For more than a century, this has been the soundtrack of adventure — the Grand Canyon Railway carrying travelers on a 65-mile journey through stunning landscapes. But soon, that familiar diesel rumble will give way to something revolutionary: the quiet hum of zero-emission, battery-powered travel.

Thanks to a $3.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements (CRISI) program, the Grand Canyon Railway is transforming one of their classic diesel locomotives into a cuttingedge, battery-electric marvel — a bold step in redefining sustainable travel to one of our most treasured landscapes.

There’s something undeniably magical about approaching the Grand Canyon by rail. The train offers a contemplative journey that builds anticipation as high desert gives way to towering ponderosa pines, until, at last, you’re met with the breathtaking spectacle of the South Rim vista.

The Grand Canyon Railway has long been committed to preserving this delicate ecosystem, having already converted their historic steam locomotives to run on recycled waste vegetable oil. Now they’re pushing that boundary even further. When the new battery-electric locomotive begins service in 2027, it will glide silently through Arizona’s high country on a single charge, carrying passengers while leaving virtually no environmental footprint.

“We’re not the first batteryelectric locomotive on the planet, but most operate in switching yards, industrial plants, and on short-line railways,” says Eric Hadder, Chief

when the locomotive is sitting up at the station, there’s a quietness that you don’t have with the diesel engine, and there’s a lack of smoke emissions.” The magic of the journey—the stunning scenery, superb service, and extraordinary Old West entertainment—remains intact, but with a whisper-quiet efficiency that enhances the natural wonder surrounding it.

What makes this train truly special isn’t just the technology, though, it’s the destination. “We’re the only railroad you can ride that will take you right to the Grand Canyon,” Eric says. “To be able to walk those last few steps off the train and look over the rim and have that huge, natural wonder stretched out in front of you is the most exciting thing. And you got there in a historic and nostalgic way that takes you back 100 years.”

Mechanical Officer at Grand Canyon Railway. “To operate one on a daily basis, on a passenger railroad traveling at speeds up to 40 miles an hour with a 130-mile round trip, that range is going to be unique.”

The real magic happens in regenerative braking, technology

As part of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s CRISI grant program, this project is pioneering environmentally forward-thinking rail projects across the country. The Grand Canyon Railway isn’t just preserving a historic mode of travel; they’re reimagining its future.

“It’s going to be a much more environmentally friendly and efficient operation for us.”

that transforms the train’s 65-mile journey across varying elevations from an energy drain into an energy source. “As we go downhill, we recapture that potential energy from gravity and then store it in the battery,” Eric says. The system recharges the battery by approximately 30 percent during each trip.

“It’s going to be a much more environmentally friendly and efficient operation for us,” he adds. “It’s going to require so much less maintenance than our regular locomotives.”

For passengers, the experience will remain beautifully familiar while becoming subtly enhanced. “Most customers won’t even notice the difference,” Eric observes. “But if they pay attention, they’ll notice

As the railway prepares for this transformation, the journey to the Grand Canyon is about to become as remarkable as the destination itself — proving that the greenest choice can also be the most magical one.

The Grand Canyon Railway operates every day except Christmas, carrying passengers through landscapes that stir the soul. And soon, with a new batteryelectric locomotive designed to handle Northern Arizona’s every season, that beloved journey becomes even more meaningful. It’s the same breathtaking ride to one of America’s greatest natural treasures — now powered by quiet innovation, and a profound commitment to protecting the beauty that makes it unforgettable.

With 340,000 ties and 65 bridges along the route, maintaining the 65-mile track is a labor of love, and cost. Refurbishing just one railcar can top $1 million.

BATTERY-POWERED FUTURE

The $3.4 million grant covers 80 percent of the cost to construct the battery-electric locomotive that will glide silently on the rails.

BATTERIES THAT KEEP ON GIVING

The new locomotive’s batteries are built to last 12 years, and after their train days are done, they’ll get a second life as solar energy storage on the ground.
