Behind the Blue: Jason McLin ot only is this a landmark year for Blue Man Group, it’s a significant one for Jason McLin, who will turn 40 in September. Before that, he will travel to Cape Cod as one of the three Blue Men who will serve as guest conductors at this year’s Citizens Bank Pops by the Sea concert. A native of Indianapolis and a graduate of The Theatre School at DePaul University, McLin has spent the past 14 years performing with Blue Man Group, first in Chicago, then in Toronto and the past five years in Boston. Admittedly, some of the job has become rote; putting on the blue paint, which takes roughly 30 minutes, for instance, “is always far less glamorous than it sounds,” he says. Another notable fact about McLin? He’s not bald. “But I am balding now,” he points out, laughing that, “I still have to wear a bald cap which is adding insult to injury. There are many Blue Men with healthy flowing locks, though I no longer happen to be one of them.” While there is a routine to his work, don’t think for a second that McLin is not passionate about what he does. For him it’s a job only in title. “It is perfect,” he says. “I feel creatively and artistically fulfilled.” He is eager to share his passion for what he does with Pops audiences on August 14. “I’m so ecstatic about it.
