Message from the Editor What are your plans to make 2016 a memorable year? I often think that it would be better to not make resolutions, but rather plan for those moments that take our breath. Some suggestions for the first 7 months covered by this edition of “Focus” : In January take some fruit to a local nursing home or go read to a resident. February -Tell not only your Valentine that you love them, but take time to send a card or just tell all those you love in your life how much they mean to you. March is still a bit of a blustery time, plan a party with “no name” and invite friends, neighbors and family and just enjoy each other. April - As the earth awakens, dig in the dirt, plan that flower, vegetable or herb garden, hang a new bird house or feeder. May-Oh those merry days! Do something that excites you. A weekend getaway to a near-by site or invite the family to gather round the kitchen table to explore brochures and info to plan your summer vacation. June-Celebrate with high school and college graduates. Let those in your acquaintance know you are proud of their accomplishment. Include a favorite memory you have from their childhood that endears them to you. July-Be thankful for our freedom. Send a letter to a solider serving our country a special thank you letter. Our cover this issue is the Memorial Cross on the mountain in Sewanee. The 60’ Cross is on the campus of the University of the South. It was erected in 1922 to honor students who served in the armed forces. Take a trip and read the dedication. Be sure and snap some treasured photos. We extend a special thanks to Beverley Charlton for the unique sunset photo that is featured on the cover of this issue. Brenda

In December of 2009, Russell Barnett purchased the Winchester dealership from Fred Walker, who had been in business in this location since 1973. In February of 2015, during hours that the business was closed, a fire started. A passing employee saw the emerging smoke and called the fire department and General Manager, Jerry Little. “ The building incurred heavy smoke ad water damage. It was a total redo project, Little explained. The Barnett team began immediate measures to insure that their customers continued to receive the dependable service they were due. Temporary mobile offices were installed and business continued. Today the building is in the final stages of completion.

Looking Good...Feeling Great!

“To help make healthy living a default choice by bringing the best ideas, values, information and science together under one roof. We aim to help you make a healthy choice the preferred choice.” This is the mission statement of The Body Shop Health and Wellness Studio located at 1804 Sharps Springs Road in Winchester. Owner Christy Keen started the business in June of 2013. “I have always been interested in teaching health and nutrition,” Christy said. “Caring for our bodies and building self esteem are key elements in our living long and happy lives.” She wanted to share the information she had learned with others. Her sister’s diagnosis with skin cancer and successful treatment made her mission even more relevant. “Many were seeking the look of a tanned fit body,” Christy stated. Yet, their approach was not one that was best for overall health. We all know the harmful rays of the sun are very detrimental to the skin and those who choose tanning beds are 74% more likely to get skin cancer she continued. Spray tanning is the best way to achieve that tanned, healthy glow. Christy uses Norvell, the product line used by those talented teams you see on “Dancing With the Stars”. It is ph balanced and not harmful. Bare Minerals is the natural

make-up product featured in the Shop. It doesn’t clog pores, has no chemicals and does not harm the skin in any way. Christy’s expert advice and knowledge of each individuals skin types and colors assures there is no trial and error. Customers get the formula that is just right the very first time. “I have plans to expand on my mission to educate during 2016,” Christy states with an enthusiastic smile. A special night with a guest speaker, who is a specialist in their field, will be an event to mark on your calendar once a month. Christy will provide cards to jot down questions that will be directed to the speaker. It will eliminate any embarrassment one might feel if they had to ask in the presence of the group. Cooking classes will be an important part of educating clients who want to eat, not only healthy options, but ones that actually taste good. Weight control is a huge issue in today’s culture and these recipes and methods will make it easier for good eating habits to become, not a diet, but a true lifestyle change. Recently a customer called Christy to say that though she was 78 years old, she had never felt pretty in her life until she started visiting The Health and Wellness Studio and using Christy’s advice to improve in so many areas. She stated, “Thank you so much, Christy. For the first time in my life I look in the mirror and my reflection says, ‘You are pretty’. “ The inviting atmosphere at the Shop contributes to the feeling Christy wants all her customers to have. They feel they are in the home of a caring friend. “Come visit with me soon,” Christy welcomes.

Home Medical Refrigeration In An Emergency When the electric power grid goes down in an extended emergency, if you are diabetic or have other medical conditions that require refrigerated medicines, your life or the life of loved ones depends on keeping medicine cold. A solar powered refrigerator system can save the day. SunDanzer’s super insulated super efficient mini refrigerator is smaller than a washing machine and can operate 24/7/365 with a properly designed off grid solar system. A typical system costs less than $2,000. Discuss this idea with your doctor and ask if your medical condition justifies a an emergency refrigerator prescription as a medical expense. A system installed and operating before December 31, 2015 also qualifies for the Federal renewable energy tax credit of 30 percent. The components that make up a system include a solar panel, a circuit breaker, lightning arrestor, solar charge controller, fuses, wire and cables, and battery which

is totally sealed and maintenance free. The refrigerator operates on 12 or 24 volt direct current VDC. The installation is simple and straight forward. There is a control option that allows the refrigerator to operate on 115 VAC from the grid when available, or from a small generator. What if your location is not suitable for solar? The batteries that power the refrigerator can be charged from the grid while available and can provide 3-7 days of backup power. Batteries can also be relocated to a place where solar can work and be charged remotely. A small wind turbine can also be a supplement to charging in some locations. A vehicle alternator can also be a charging source. There are charge controllers used for RVs, travel trailers and boats designed to charge secondary batteries in addition to the vehicle starting battery. The delivery time on a home medical refrigeration system is typically about a week.

Making A House Your Home Is All In the Details

Most prospective homebuyers are careful to chose a home that fits their lifestyle and budget. “Combining these two ingredients can be a complicated process,” explains Wendy Barton, owner of Southern Home Enterprises in Manchester, Tennessee. Building custom homes is just one of her specialties. It is this task that really excites Wendy. Questions of lifestyle should be first. What is the size of the family? Do they need recreation space, a home office, a gourmet kitchen? What size garage? Will it be used to protect vehicles from weather, for storage, as a workshop? Does it need to be built with future expansion in mind? Are outdoor parties and meals a priority or do you just need a place to bird watch or read? All these factors influence the size and basic floor plan anywhere the home is placed

on the building site. Once these determinations are made, it is time to talk about personal decorating tastes. “And this is where those all important details come into focus,” Wendy explains. Most people think that adding custom detail may be out of reach in their budget, but Wendy’s creative ideas make achieving them affordable for most. The aesthetic, rich look of crown molding, a rounded corner where most are squared, backsplashes that enhance and islands and reachable cabinets that improve the utility of a workspace are just some of the examples of these details. Wendy experience and expertise continues to add to her wealth of ideas. “I want every one of my clients to have the opportunity to utilize these options to get the most house for their money. Living in pleasant surroundings lessens the stress of our daily lives. A retreat that reflects their tastes increases their self esteem,” she continues. That single parent, the newly wed couple, the middle agers who are ready to move from their starter to the next level to the empty nesters who seek to downsize all have special requests that often can be accommodated without breaking their budget,” she assures. The showroom at 104 East Fort Street has samples of flooring in an array of textures and colors. Wendy can create a project board that incorporates these into a design plan that will put together all the pieces in harmony. If one is already a homeowner and either wants to update or perhaps ready their house for sale, then Southern Home Enterprise is the place for their plans to become reality. Sellers find the costs of updating is not only recouped but often adds value resulting in a higher sale price. Is 2016 the year for you to build your dream home? Is it the time to update so you can enjoy your present home even more? Will it be the right time for you to make those value adding renovations before placing your house on the market? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then pick up your phone and push the magic buttons, 931-5635556 and when you hear the smile in the voice that answers, “This is Wendy, how may I help you?”, your dream catcher will automatically activate.

Tips for Writing an Effective Resume

Hiring managers and recruiters alike say they’ve seen more poorly written resumes cross their desks recently than ever before. Attract more interview offers and ensure your resume doesn’t eliminate you from consideration by following these six key tips: 1. Format Your Resume Wisely “Do the Hiring Managers” Work for Them No matter how well written, your resume won’t get a thorough reading the first time through. Generally a resume gets scanned for 25 seconds. Scanning is more difficult if it is hard to read, poorly organized or exceeds two pages. Use a logical format and wide margins, clean type and clear headings Selectively apply bold and italic typeface that help guide the reader’s eye Use bullets to call attention to important points (i.e. accomplishments) 2. Identify Accomplishments not Just Job Descriptions Hiring managers, especially in technical fields like engineering, seek candidates that can help them solve a problem or satisfy a need within their company. Consequently, you can’t be a solution to their problems without stating how you solved similar problems in other companies and situations. Focus on what you did in the job, NOT what your job was there’s a difference Include a one or two top line job description first, then list your accomplishments For each point ask yourself, What was the benefit of having done what I did? Accomplishments should be unique to you, not just a list of what someone else did Avoid using the generic descriptions of the jobs you originally applied for or held 3. Quantify Your Accomplishments Q: What’s the most common resume mistake? A: Making too many general claims and using too much industry jargon that does not market the candidate. A resume is a marketing document designed to sell your skills and strengths rather than just portray a bio of the candidate. Include and highlight specific achievements that present a comprehensive picture of your marketability Quantify your achievements to ensure greater confidence in the hiring manager and thereby generate interest percentages, dollars, number of employees, etc. Work backwards to quantify your accomplishments by asking, If I had not done X, what could have happened? 4. Cater Your Resume for the Industry Unlike advertising and design professionals who have greater creative license in designing their resume for those fields, the mechanical engineering industry won’t be impressed and may be turned off by distinctive resume design.

6. Network. Network. Network. For unemployed candidates, handing out resumes should be a full-time job. The majority of mid- to senior-level positions are filled through networking, so contact absolutely everyone you know in addition to recruiters who are in a position to hire you or share insights. Networking can include Personal business contacts, people you’ve worked for or who worked for you Vendors and sales representatives you’ve dealt with in the past five years People listed in the alumni directory of your alma mater With a solid resume in hand you’ll greatly increase your odds of earning a closer look and getting that interview.

Err on the side of being conservative stylistically Your accomplishments, error-free writing, grammatically-correct, clean, crisp type and paper will make the impression for you 5. Replace your Objective” with a “Career Summary” A Career Summary is designed to give a brief overview of who you are and what you do. Most Objectives sound similar: Seeking a challenging, interesting position in X where I can use my skills of X, Y, and Z to contribute to the bottom line. Not telling at all. Grab a hiring manager’s attention right from the beginning, remembering you have only 25 few seconds to make a good impression Spend time developing a summary that immediately gets their attention, and accurately and powerfully describes you as a solution to their problems

It Takes Two

Y

ou often find business where husband and wives are both involved, but it isn’t often you find them intertwining two different ones. Kathy and Michael Sherrill, own and operate GiGi’s Nest and Wood and Stone Custom Cabinets. Michael has 30 plus years experience in cabinet making and Kathy has been fascinated with jewelry making, antiques and repurposing furniture for years. In 2011, they decided to pool their skills and opened Wood and Stone at 306 East Carroll Street in Tullahoma. “We found that building a showroom of cabinets was not the optimum scenario as most people wanted and needed custom products,” Kathy said. She took advantage of this new found space and began filling it with painted furniture finds, crafts, painted vintage pieces and her handcrafted jewelry. She had been making jewelry and having stores in Tullahoma and Winchester market it for her and she was delighted to bring it home to her own store. “I don’t do consignment, “she explained. “All the items in my shop are personally selected.” Her innovative items include chalk painted and distressed painted pieces, Architectural doors and windows invites the imagination to reinvent. Sewing and stenciling are included in her talents. “Home décor and crafts are very trendy,” Kathy stated. “I read about and observe these trends so customers can find the latest, new innovative products and ideas at GiGi’s. Kathy is adamant about repurposing and reusing as opposed to a “throw-a-way” approach. GiGi’s is not your grandmother’s attic. Kathy’s eyes see not what a piece is, rather what it can be. Shopping at GiGi’s is an adventure of exciting discovery. “I often need Michael’s help with repairing, arranging and many things,” Kathy declared. Michael is certainly an excellent partner. His expertise in cabinetry is amazing. In 2011, he decided to leave a secure job and become the owner of Wood and Stone. He saw the opportunity to offer a personal type of service and selection

not found in the big chains. Wood and Stone is the one stop center for cabinet and hardware. Styles are custom made and the choices fit any personal taste or décor. You’ll find counter tops including laminate, granite and quartz. “We keep up with the trends. We can do gazing, produce antique looks, there is no limitations on styles colors and wood,” he explained. Wood and Stone uses only quality materials. They offer a complete package from the custom built pieces to all installation. Remodels, new builds and refacing cabinets are all done at about a 40% savings. The quick turn-around time insures a prompt delivery and installation. Bookcases, office desks, manuals, entertainment centers and islands can be added to the list of custom items. Michael is assisted by a staff of 5 skilled professionals with many years of experience. “We are dedicated to serving the Southern Middle Tennessee homeowners with the best in quality and service,” Michael concluded. It takes two to run two different, yet complementary businesses and Kathy and Michael have the talents to make it happen.

Keep Your Jewelry Shining Bright

F

Avoid Cleaning Damaged Jewelry Never clean any jewelry that is damaged, cracked or broken, since the additional handling is likely to exacerbate or worsen the problem. If you find that a piece of jewelry is damaged, it should be set aside for repair as soon as possible.

Inspect Your Jewelry Regularly

or those that wear jewelry regularly, keeping their jewelry clean and looking good requires regular effort. Here are some general guidelines that may help:

Just like anything else, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. When having your jewelry professionally cleaned, it’s a good idea to have each item checked and inspected for any possible problems. Addressing signs of damage, or loose gemstones will prevent any further damage or loss and keep all of your pieces in excellent shape for years.

Remove Your Jewelry Before Bathing Remove all jewelry before showering or cleaning. Soap can cause a film to form, making it appear dull and dingy. By preventing the formation of this film you immediately reduce the occasions of servicing.

Use Jewelry Polishing Cloths for Best Results Polish silver or gold with a jewelry polishing cloth for best results. You can use a svelte or an old diaper, but the professional cloths are the best. Use of tissue or paper towels can cause scratches because of fibers in these products.

Chocolatier

Only Le Vian® Makes Jewelry With Chocolate Diamonds® VANILLA DIAMONDS® 14K STRAWBERRY GOLD®

Clean Your Jewelry With Care Cleaning your own jewelry regularly can keep it looking good, but be careful. You can either purchase commercial cleaners from a jeweler or make a cleaning a solution yourself. Rubbing alcohol can work wonders, but bleach can literally destroy jewelry so avoid it at all costs.

Use Warm Water to Clean Jewelry Using warm water is the best bet when cleaning your own jewelry. How water can cause reaction with the cleaning fluids resulting in discoloration and Sterling Silver is especially susceptible to this problem. Should this occur, this problem can be remedied by buffing and the application of a tarnish remover.
