Message from the Editor As the summer fades into school days and fall, I reflect on how it seems as I age time moves so much faster. It once again reminds my how precious are the days of our lives. Are you taking time to make memories? Are you planning that family fall drive to just enjoy the colors? There are multiple fall events planned throughout Southern Middle Tennessee. Many of these are listed in Focus. Take a few minutes and make a list of the ones that attract you and your family. Are you aware that you can get so caught up in the to dos that you forget the true meaning of Christmas and that time with your family will be remembered much longer than the presents received? Most of the towns in our area have Christmas events and parades scheduled. My grandchildren still tell me that they cherish the memory of a Bell Buckle event that welcomed you into homes that showcased their decor and offered refreshments. The carriage ride through town was a highlight. One of the ways to make time for memory making is to remember it is so much easier when you chose local businesses for gift select and for many services. As I stated at the beginning of this note to my readers, time seems to fly by. It also can make everyday tasks more difficult. I’m in search of a partner to train for Focus. Fred Deadman Park section of the Little Duck River Greenway The Little Duck River Greenway connects the Coffee County Middle School, Dave King Park, Fred Deadman Park, the Recreation Center, the Town Square, Old Stone Fort State Park and the Caretakers Entrance of Old Stone Fort on State Highway 41. It is a 2.4 mile, 8 foot wide concrete walkway with wooden boardwalks, bridges, an octagonal overlook, and the Keep Coffee County Memorial Garden. The newest section just opened up at the Manchester Sports Park. Rules of Use The Little Duck River Greenway is a pedestrian walkway and is not open to horses or motorized vehicles. The section from the Town Square through the Memorial Garden into Fred Deadman park is lighted.

Webb Art & Craft Show
Bell Buckle Chamber of Commerce hosts the Webb Art & Craft Show RAIN OR SHINE on Saturday, October 19, 2019 and Sunday, October 20, 2019. The event began in 1976 and has become a perennial crowd favorite with the show being voted the number one craft fair in middle Tennessee by readers of the The Tennessee Magazine over and over again! Thousands of shoppers make this annual pilgrimage to our quaint town to enjoy fantastic arts and crafts, food, scenery, live entertainment, and good old southern hospitality. A host of activities entertain visitors no matter what age, while the excellent variety and original works certainly give everyone an early start on their Christmas list. Every year new artists attend keeping the show fresh and exciting from year to year. The show features over 100 juried artists in fields of pottery, fiber, jewelry, wood, baskets, paintings, sculptures, ironworks, photography, chainsaw carvings, botanicals, and more depending on the year. Many of the artists give live, on site demonstrations of their skills. The food booths offer a wide variety such as Greek, Italian, Asian, and typical Southern favorites from funnel cakes to candied apples to lemonade, and of course, barbeque! Live entertainment lifts the spirits of already happy shoppers throughout the day. A free hay ride serves as a shuttle transporting shoppers throughout the town. In addition to the Webb Art & Craft Show on Maple Street on the big, open field adjoining The Webb School, there are hundreds of other booths throughout the town.

New survey finds most Americans do not plan for their later years. Brookdale is here to help. TULLAHOMA, Tenn., JUNE 11, 2019 – A new survey conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Brookdale Senior Living asked 2,000 Americans about their plans for the future. The survey found that most adults don’t plan to live in a senior living community. In fact, 61% of survey respondents said they want to stay in their current home, even if they have to live alone. Meanwhile, 58% of adult children polled worry that their aging parents will need senior living assistance and the same percentage of people said talking about senior living was uncomfortable and stressful. It doesn’t have to be. “The survey confirms what we see when families walk into our communities every day,” said Mary Sue Patchett, Brookdale’s executive vice president of community operations. “Many people wait to talk about senior living until there’s a traumatic event or they need to make a fast decision. Many seniors know they need help, but they don’t want to ask for it because they’re afraid of losing their independence or becoming a burden to their children. Instead, they suffer silently and often in isolation. My advice is to have the conversation sooner rather than later.” 6 out of 10 people said they’d live alone and stay in their current home “According ” to Brookdale’s new survey, more than 40% of adult children have
no plan in place for their parents in the event of a medical emergency or sudden passing. Nearly half of all adults surveyed said they do not have a plan in place for their own later years, yet three out of 10 adults said they would consider moving into a senior living community. Brookdale’s survey found that most people said a senior living community would have to have a fun, social environment, healthy food and independent living options in order for them to consider moving in. Where Does it All Go? That question for Coffee County and the surrounding area is now answered...It goes to the all new Southern Waste Transfer Station in the Interstate Industrial Park at 490 Volunteer Court Manchester, Tennessee. Southern Waste LLC was formed in 2017 by Southern Central Waste Services and a group of local investors. The gates opened to construction/demolition companies, businesses, industrial businesses and the general public in March 2019. It is part of the CFC family of businesses that include Southern Central in McMinnville and CFC Recycle and Pick ‘N Pull in Tullahoma. The group saw the need for a waste disposal site in the central Coffee County area. “We knew there was a need as the issue of garbage and trash disposal grows every day,” explained David Cleveland. Gary Cordell, Mayor of Coffee County, had the vision to realize that the landfill options for the county were going to be limited in the coming years. Southern Waste is the facility chosen to meet today’s and future needs. “We estimate that the Coffee County taxpayer savings are $150,000 a year,” Cleveland stated. The state of the art facility is designed to handle every customer very efficiently. With 2 sets of scales, inbound and outbound, and two sets of on-site material handlers, the in and out time is from 10 to 20 minutes. This works well for both commercial and residential users. Just cleaned out your garage, put on a new roof and need shingle disposal, have left overs from a building project? Take that waste to the new facility. No long line. You are in and out quickly. The recent state inspectors were very impressed with the overall operation. “It is the best the state has to offer,” they stated.

Fall Garden Tasks for a Better Spring Garden Enrich garden beds with compost or manure. Just spread an even layer on any exposed soil. Winter’s freezing and thawing, with some extra help from the earthworms, will work it into the soil for you. Collect dried seed from open pollinated flowers & veggies. You can save it to sow next year or do some strategic self-sowing in other parts of your garden. Gather herbs, seed heads and flowers for drying. Leave some flowers for the birds, but get ahead start on your garden clean-up by cutting back plants like hydrangea and yarrow and bringing them indoors, for some garden memories. Winterize your water garden. Get ready to turn off the pump and turn on the ice breaker. Don’t forget to cover the water garden with netting, to keep the falling leaves out. Keep trees and shrubs well watered until the ground freezes. They may look dormant, but they’re still alive. If you have a mild, dry winter, continue watering throughout the season. This goes doubly for trees that were planted this year. Cut back most perennials. Definitely cut back diseased perennials and remove all foliage and dispose of it somewhere other than the compost.

Root Beer Baked Beans • • • • • • • • • • • • •
4 slices bacon, cut into 1-inch pieces 1 large white onion, finely diced 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 tablespoon minced peeled ginger 2 tablespoons tomato paste 2 12-ounce bottles root beer (about 3 cups) 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar 2 teaspoons molasses 1 tablespoon grainy mustard Hefty pinch of red pepper flakes 1/4 teaspoon garam masala 4 15-ounce cans cannellini beans, drained and rinsed Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Set a medium oven-safe pot over medium heat and add the bacon. Cook, stirring, until most of the fat is rendered and the bacon is crisp, about 8 minutes; remove to paper towels with a slotted spoon to drain. Add the onion, garlic and ginger to the drippings in the pot and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft and golden, about 5 minutes. Add the tomato paste and cook until the color deepens, about 1 more minute. Add the root beer, vinegar, molasses, mustard, red pepper flakes and garam masala to the pot. Stir, then bring to a boil. Add the beans and three-quarters of the bacon and gently stir so the beans don’t lose their shape. Reduce the heat to medium low and simmer until slightly thickened, about 15 minutes; season with salt and pepper. Transfer to the oven and bake, uncovered, until thick, about 30 minutes. Let cool slightly, then top with the remaining bacon.
