Message from the Editor

Pain and Rewards

Life Lessons Are Ageless-This title for an article included in this edition has lingered on my mind for several recent weeks. My life lessons began at a very early age. My parents Evaline and Mack Merrell gave me an inner compass that has guided me through many phases of my life. They instilled in me a reassuring faith, a strong work ethic and a never ending quest to learn. Once when I was curious about volcanoes, Daddy instructed me to ,”Go look it up.” A few days later when he asked what I had discovered, I shared what the library sources had revealed. Then he stated, “Brenda. I could have told you what I knew about volcanos, but then you would have been limited by my knowledge. Your research not only taught you but me as well.” After working for factories for over 14 years and feeling I was in a kind of “mental prison”, I found the print business. My knowledge quest was again activated. I read articles, perused the pages of newspapers and magazines for ads that captured my attention, and eventually lead to getting an overview of the part, my creative side rebelled against: the business side. Several years ago when Elaine Nelson and I started Focus magazine our goal was to showcase the events and local businesses in Southern Middle Tennessee. After her death just before we completed our third issue, I continued publishing Focus, the only quality regional publication in the market. Regular readers will notice the increased number of pages in this issue. During the sales process, I had many area businesses recognize the value of Focus in their marketing plan. About 6 weeks ago, my search for Angie Wiser was rewarded. I had employed her at the Coffee County Shopper many years ago and recognized her sales skills. Welcome to Focus, Angie. I credit much of our growth to your hard work and dedication to excellence in customer service. On a personal side many life lessons learned guided me through the loss of my husband of 35 years to lung cancer, my parents deaths and the helpless feeling of not being able to rescue my 27 year old son from the mental illness that drove him to overdose on drugs he depended on to quiet the images and voices in his head. Now at 70 I am perplexed at the lesson I need to learn as I deal with daily pain from rheumatoid arthritis and fibromyalgia. I am trying! I refuse to let it rob me of the love of my work and my passion for travel. I have always felt I was born to wander and wonder. A lesson I feel I must put some sincere effort into now is to find a working partner to help me continue to grow Focus. If any of my readers would like to explore business ownership, I would like to discuss that possibility with you. It requires hard work and dedication, but very little monetary investment. If you or someone you know are interested, please contact me at 931-409-9567. Life lessons shared bring joy! Brenda

Works of Art

When your inspiration is Vogue, the resulting photography is truly a work of art. Kathy Bennett has chosen to offer studio portraits that are a bit of departure from the relaxed, woodland and grassy field shots being offered in today’s market. “The details are so important,” Kathy states. Her artistic eye demands portraits that reflect the personality and interests of her clients. Her quest for perfection results in her having third generation customers choose her for their senior photos. Proms are special times and Kathy captures these moments. If you choose Kathy Bennett Photography for your wedding, you will be assured of the highest quality. In addition to photography, Kathy’s husband offers custom framing. Shadow boxes are specialty items available. “We offer the only computerized mat cutting in the area,” Kathy states. It is interesting to see how Kathy choose to offer tuxedo rentals. “There is no skill that can produce a perfect treasured wedding photograph if the groom’s and his groomsmen’s tuxedos are ill fitting,” Kathy said with a smile. She offers men’s formal wear by Jim’s at the lowest prices and they are guaranteed to fit. Call Kathy to reserve studio time for your portrait. “I schedule an hour to an hour and a half to insure you get what you want,” Kathy declares. Turnaround time on projects are about a week, and she provides paper or CD proofs. If you demand exceptional, unique photos that capture the essences of you and your loved ones, just call Kathy today and preserve those treasured memories.

A Romatic Fairytale Castle

hundred oaks castle

Tucked away in the rolling hills of Winchester, Tennessee stands a real, fairytale castle. A very special place in time, in the midst of towers, turrets & castellations, lies the gloriously restored ruins of historic Hundred Oaks. Listed by the SMITHSONIAN as one of the few remaining historic castles in America, it was named one of the Top Ten Most Romantic Castles in the World, in 2008. History Construction on Hundred Oaks Castle began in 1830, though it was not so-named at the time. It was originally built as a plantation farm house by Benjamin Decherd, the railroad Sink your beak in to the best food in town! tycoon for whom the town of Home of the World’s Best Hamburger! Decherd, Tennessee, is named. Something for everyone... The property was purchased in Chicken Fingers the 1860’s by Albert Marks, the Philly Cheese Steaks 21st governor of Tennessee and Chef Salad a relative to Thomas Jefferson. Hand Dipped Ice Cream It is said that Albert’s son Arthur 28 South Jefferson St counted the gracious oak trees Winchester TN that dotted the plantation land and came to the sum of 100, hence the name “Hundred Oaks.” Arthur traveled abroad as a diplomat and met his lovely bride, Nashvillian Mary Hunt, overseas. They married in Scotland where Arthur fell in love with castle architecture. And so, upon their return to Winchester and Hundred Oaks in 1889, they began the arduous task of renovating Arthur’s childhood plantation home into a sprawling work of art, appropriately to be christened Hundred Oaks Castle... And from such beginnings flowed a history that has touched countless lives and has stood the fierce test of the elements and time. The Castle claims as its previous owners the Paulist Fathers, who operated it as a monastery for over fifty years. The Castle has seen days of glory and one fire-ravaged night of devastation, yet it stands today wonderfully embraced in the beauty of its own history, restored to life and joy by the hard work and faith of P.K., Shirley and Robert Bramlett of the Kent Bramlett Foundation. In 2002 Robert took Ashley as his beloved bride before 600 guests with the historic Castle as the backdrop. Their family has now been blessed with the addition of two sons and a daughter. Robert and Ashley are both lawyers with P. K. Bramlett at Bramlett Law Offices in Nashville. Ashley is also a children’s book author. 8 | Showcase Your Business in FOCUS - Call 931.409.9567 | January - June 2017

A Tranquil & Peaceful Retreat

When asked to imagine their vision of water in their gardens, Franklin County Garden Club members’ replies included tranquil retreat, peaceful soothing sounds, and joyful flowing fountains. Scott Eslick of Lawns Unlimited the Garden Center in Tullahoma surprised his audience with an array of ideas gleaned from his extensive history of bringing water into landscapes. The Garden Center displayed an array of water garden applications. A table top water iris in a large goblet offered a striking simple approach. A pottery bowl featured tall cattails, rock, garden art and a mister that created movement of ground fog. The Garden center stocks a wide selection of water art features. Turtles, fish in subdued and bright colors joined a blue heron so realistic one could imagine it taking flight during the presentation.

Scott Eslick, who with Craig and Heather Eslick own and operate Lawns Unlimited, The Garden Center, offers information and advice for bringing water features into homes and gardens.

Life Lessons Are Ageless

As a young girl growing up in New Jersey, Midge Divis was fascinated by beauty created by window dressers in large department stores and she dreamed she might pursue a career in this fairyland world. However, practicality and her love of knowledge seeking lead her to become a teacher. She has truly taught through the ages. For 15 years she taught kindergarten and today she is the activities director at Southern Manor Living Center in Fayetteville, Tennessee. “Bringing “life” to our seniors is my joy each day. Living on a farm with my family, I have many animal and life stories that I enjoy sharing with them as they vicariously live through my experiences. I especially find that the smiles and laughter “lighten their load” and I employ many old-age philosophies that they find enjoyable such as: “Don’t let anyone tell you’re getting old. Squash their toes with your rocker.” and “The Golden Years are really just metallic years; gold in the tooth, silver in the hair and lead in the rear!” Laughter is sweet “music” at Southern Manor!” Midge declared. Midge lends her talents in music as she sings and plays the piano and autoharp. “Music-ah-sweet music is indeed the universal language and I enjoy playing songs from their past, you know the ones with the beautiful melodies and titles from the 30’s through the 50’s. The playing and singing of hymns is enjoyable and even those with memory issues can still recall and sing

not just one verse but many verses of their favorite hymn,” she states. She leads residents in many activities. Field trips to places such as the Botanical Garden in Huntsville and to the Amish community in Ethridge, Tennessee are a delight. She personally drives residents through Lincoln county often accompanied by men who know Lincoln County inside and out and offer many treasures of local history. Midge preserves the life stories of many of her residents in her published book, “In Times Long Past”. Preserving their legacies is a task done with admiration and love. Midge recounts,” Laughter is frequently heard from the activity room, dubbed “The Bingo Parlor,” since we’ve recently upped the frequency of this game. If you think competition isn’t still alive at 96+, you should see the residents sitting for an hour and a half at the tables before the game begins to protect their lucky card and chips. They may state that their eyes and ears and memory give them trouble but they are fully conscious of those they believe win more frequently than they do.” A quote from Bruce Stanly reads: “So when does your quest to improve yourself end? When you stop breathing!” Between now and then, you should consider yourself an on-going project; a work in progress, always improving , never stagnant, she concluded.

LINCOLN HEALTH SYSTEM: What is a Midwife? Authors: Alysha Walker, CNM, Katrina Dial, CNM, and Sherri Franklin, CNM

B

eing midwives, we are very familiar with what our role is during pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum, but we realize that not everyone is as familiar with our training and roles. We would like for you all to get to know us and what we do here at Lincoln Medical Center. We get asked all the time, “What is a midwife?” Well, a Certified Nurse Midwife is a nurse with a master’s level education, just like a nurse practitioner or NP that you would see in other office settings. Since all nurse practitioners are able to choose an area to specialize in, midwives choose to specialize in the care of women, not just during the delivery of a baby but to care for women throughout their entire reproductive life span. This span covers anywhere from a teenage girl who is interested in birth control options, to pregnancy, delivery, and post-partum care, to wellwoman annual care , all the way through to menopause. During pregnancy, the midwives see patients for prenatal care just as a physician would. We focus more on diet, exercise, nutritional supplements, and other things to keep our patients at their optimal health throughout the pregnancy. Typically, the visits with your nurse midwife will be longer than those with an OB/GYN because we do not have the struggles of balancing a surgical schedule with office visits. These longer office visits allow you more time to bond with us, really letting us get to know you and your goals for your pregnancy and birth. Since babies come at their own time and on their own schedules, we will rotate your prenatal appointments so you will spend time with us all and you will feel comfortable with whomever is on call when baby decides to come. By the time you deliver, we hope you feel more like friends and less like a provider and patient! We realize that often women feel a bit ‘lost’ during the postpartum period. During your pregnancy, you received a lot of attention - monthly, bi-weekly, and sometimes weekly visits to ensure everything is running on track and then suddenly, you are responsible for this new little life. Whether this child is your first or your 3rd, adding a new baby to the family changes your family unit. We are here to provide emotional support so women do not feel isolated or alone. Many women struggle with postpartum blues or post-partum depression, and we are here to help with that. We are a huge advocate for breast feeding and we love to help moms while they are in the hospital or even after they go home. If they need to come back to the clinic to get some help with breast feeding, we are here for them. Another huge issue for many moms after birth is what to do for contraception. We are here to help educate you on your options and then make 18 | Showcase Your Business in FOCUS - Call 931.409.9567 | January - June 2017

the right choice for your family. Whether you have questions on what you can use while breastfeeding, options for creating a gap between children, or you are sure your family is complete, we are here to answer your questions and provide support. For deliveries, we have an alternating call rotation and we are backed up by physicians who also have an alternating schedule. Should a situation arise that is unexpected we always have the back up of a physician who is supportive and dedicated to a woman’s birth choices, but as long as everything stays nice and normal, as most births do, we are there to manage the entire process. A common misconception when delivering with a midwife is that you cannot have an epidural or induction - that is not the case. We are supportive of a women’s choices, no matter what! As long as the practice is safe, we will be your advocate. We have epidurals, IV pain medication, self-administered nitrous oxide, and hydrotherapy for labor. We have a lot of tools in our tool bag that we can use to help a woman cope during labor and help the husband or partner cope as well. The benefits of midwifery care are numerous. Studies have shown that being cared for by a midwife during your pregnancy can reduce your risk of both preterm labor and birth by cesarean section. There are also studies that show that your risk of needing intervention during delivery (forceps or vacuum) are decreased when a midwife is present for delivery. By building a trusting relationship with our patients throughout their pregnancy, we can help a mom develop trust in her own body and gain self- confidence in her strength and ability to deliver her child. Knowing that you can make it through labor and trusting in the team of nurses, midwives, and physicians around you to back you up may not ensure labor and delivery will be easy but it can go a long way in making sure it is a pleasant, enjoyable, and empowering experience.

We Focus on the Bride

In December of 1969, a young home economics major, became an entrepreneur business owner in Tullahoma Tennessee. Hats were in style and every fashion conscious woman wanted a unique one. Millie Peterson designed and sold these must haves. She soon expanded into a full service bridal salon contained in 3 rooms of a local house. In the early 80’s the house next door became available and was bought to expand the business. Today her daughter, Lynn Peterson Bryce continues the one on one personal service that made her mother so successful at Millie’s Bridal and Formal. Planning a wedding? Millie’s should be your first stop. “We focus on the bride. It is her special day and we want it to be all she has dreamed of,” Lynn explained. From her gown to the dresses and

gowns of the attendants, moms and grandmothers to the groom’s tux and those of his party, Millie’s has it all. Cummerbunds and ties of the groom’s party can be custom matched to the fashions chosen by the ladies. Matching dyed shoes complete the look for the chosen dresses and gowns. “We are pleased to be able to find the right look for any size. Our special-order service insures everyone finds just the right attire,” Lynn declared. Alterations are available to insure perfect fit. Prom time? Want to be sure your dress is not duplicated by others in your school? Millie’s has the solution with their registry. Tux rentals are available for the guys to make their night special. From the moment you enter the comfortable home atmosphere of the shop, you are made to feel as a

welcomed guest. Lynn’s expertise and years of experience result in excellent advice. “We find that as many as four generations have trusted in our service,” Lynn says with pride. Lay-A-Way and gift certificates are available. Millie’s motto is, “We Make Your Special Day Blossom with Beauty!”

Visit Short Springs

a 420-acre natural area located in Coffee County approximately three and a half miles northeast of Tullahoma. When descending along the Machine Falls trail, a visitor can observe exposed black Chattanooga shale at mid-slope, which is a formation that delineates the Central Basin from the Highland Rim. Thickets of mountain laurel grow on the upper slopes under a dry oak-hickory forest canopy that is characteristic of Highland Rim vegetation. The lower slopes and riparian areas along Bobo Creek support towering sycamore, buckeye, magnolia, beech, and tulip poplar trees with a rich shrub layer and herbaceous cover. Short Springs is one of the very best spring wildflower locations in the state.

Southern Middle TN Market

S

Big Box Selection, Hometown Feel While working for Clayton’s, Eric Carr found that customers were seeking above average furnishings not usually found in mobile homes. “The friends and family of our buyers were so impressed, they often ordered furniture from us for their homes,” Eric explained. When the recession of 2008 adversely effected the housing market, Eric decided it was time to open his own business and home furnishings was a natural choice. His first store was in Winchester, he then moved to Nashville, but it wasn’t long until he was ready to come home and serve his local market. He opened Lazy Dayz in Manchester in 2014. When choosing products for his store, he chooses those made near here. Simmons and Catnapper are locally made and have lifetime warranty on upholstery. Amish mattresses made in Tennessee are included in Lazy Dayz selections. Mlily memory foam mattresses are made in Chattanooga and Jamison comes from Gallatin, Tennessee. “I believe in keeping the local economy thriving. It helps all of us,” Eric states. A thought provoking sign in his store states that if you buy from local you are not helping a corporate CEO buy a third vacation home, but rather provide dance lessons for a little girl, buy a ball glove for a little leaguer, and pay the mortgage on a home for a local family. This year Eric expanded his business with another store located in the same shopping center. Lazy Dayz Like New carries refurbishes mattresses. The process for producing these starts with the basic frame of a mattress then adds all new materials. Gently used living room furniture and recliners may come from rental centers who have repossessed these items. “They often will still have the tags on them. Maybe the customer didn’t like the color or style or found it just didn’t fit in their room and returned them,” Eric explained. It is like a treasure hunt, you never know what you will find there, but if you are in the market for an appliance or furnishings, look here first! Stoves, refrigerators, washers, dryers, microwaves in varying styles and finishes from colors to popular stainless steel are often found in stock. Some of these have never even been plugged in and the savings are amazing compared to regular retail. Financing is available for most any credit status. “If you have a bank account, we will likely be able to make it happen for you,” Eric states. It isn’t often that you get personalized hometown service in a store with big box selections, but Lazy Dayz is proud to bring this advantage to Southern Middle Tennessee buyers.

If you must combine them, soak them by themselves for as long as possible, then rinse them and add them to the arrangement last. • Note that contact with the sap of daffodils may irritate skin or aggravate skin allergies. • Daffodils are a March birth flower. • Daffodils symbolize regard for someone.
