Back-to-School Guide 2024-25

Dear Alief ISD Family,
Can you believe it is time to start another outstanding school year in Alief ISD? As we embark on another exciting educational journey, I want to extend my warmest greetings to our students and staff. many of whom have been working throughout the summer to prepare for another successful start to the school year.
In the following pages, we hope you will find all the information and tips your family needs as we prepare for the 2024-25 school year. As your proud superintendent, I am beyond excited to welcome our students and staff this school year!
We are honored to serve such a diverse, dynamic, and engaged community. For more than 100 years, Alief ISD has been a staple in our community and we plan to be around for many more. The hallways of our schools have educated some of the best and brightest in Houston and beyond. From Grammy-award winners and nominees to NFL players, world-renowned scientists and educators, lawyers, city officials, and much much more; success stories abound in Alief ISD.
I would like to personally thank our Board of Trustees for their continuous support. They are the very backbone of this District and they truly have our best interests at heart. They are on the front lines advocating for our students and staff daily and for that, we will forever be grateful.
Lastly, I would like to thank our Public Relations department for the hard work and creativity when preparing this publication for our community. This was truly a labor of love and seeing their vision come to fruition makes me so proud. I know that there is much more to come.
We want our stakeholders to remain engaged, involved, and informed on all things Alief. You can find us on Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and YouTube, subscribe to our ImpactED podcast (third season coming soon), visit our website, and download SmugMug for photos.
Thank you for being a part of our Alief ISD family, where we are “One dream, one team, one Alief…A place for everyone.”

By Kristyn Hunt Cathey, APR - Chief of Communications and PR
Alief ISD appreciates the variety of communication apps and platforms available to connect with families, but too many choices can lead to confusion. To streamline our communications effots the District is excited to announce the adoption of a new form of school-to-home communication called ParentSquare. This platform will unify all school and District communications, and is designed to keep parents and guardians informed and encourage greater engagement and connection with our families. ParentSquare will replace SchoolMessenger and Remind.
The platform provides safe, two-way communications for district administrators, school principals, teachers, staff, and parents to:
Send and receive school and class information
Share pictures and files
See calendar items
Schedule parentteacher conferences
Sign up to volunteer and much more… all in one centralized place!
Parents will receive an activation email for their ParentSquare account. Those who do not register will still receive text, email, and phone notifications. Parents who do create an account can interact by viewing photos, downloading attachments, leaving comments, messaging teachers, signing permission slips, and managing their communication settings and preferences.
As we prepare for the launch of the platform, we encourage our families to view the training video. The District will roll out the platform in phases, beginning with staff and administrators by Aug.12 and families by Sept. 4.
Special to the News - Alief ISD has implemented a new online payment system, SchoolCash Online, that makes it easier and more convenient for parents/guardians to pay student activity and registration fees.
Secure and easy to use, SchoolCash offers 24/7 shopping convenience to families so that they manage all their child/children's school activity fees with a single account. Families receive email notifications as new items become available for purchase and can access their account history at any time to view activity and print receipts as needed. More than 100 languages are available.
The system will also provide significant time savings for teachers and administrative staff who will spend less time handling cash in classrooms and offices.
"SchoolCash Online provides numerous benefits to our entire school community in terms of convenience, time-savings, and risk reduction," said Charles Woods, Deputy Superintendent of Business Services. "By providing a contactless option we've eliminated the need for students to carry cash to school, thereby upholding our health & safety protocols."
SchoolCash Online also offers a guest checkout option so that members of the public can pay for sporting events, theater productions, facility rentals, and the like.
Alief ISD Families can register for a SchoolCash Online account by visiting aliefisd.schoolcashonline.com.

Ever wonder how school districts manage their budgets and allocate your tax dollars? What do terms like M&O and ADA really mean? To truly grasp this complex system and build our financial strength, we need to start with the basics and work out our financial muscles.
Alief ISD is excited to introduce an initiative designed to educate and engage our community about Texas School Finance. By providing transparent insights into our budgeting process, Alief ISD’s Fiscal Fitness aims to clear up any confusion and foster a stronger understanding of public school finance and its impact on student learning in Alief ISD. Learn more at fiscalfitness.aliefisd.net
Your tax dollars are hard at work in our schools every day! At Alief ISD, we’re dedicated to being fiscally fit, ensuring your tax dollars are used responsibly and transparently to advocate effectively for our community. The Alief ISD School Board sets the local property tax rate each year, while the county appraisal district determines the market value of homes and business properties. School districts don’t set the value, but we make sure every tax dollar is put to good use.
The average taxable home value in Alief ISD is $153,252, with property owners paying an average of $1,512 in local school taxes annually.
Where does funding come from?
Alief ISD 2023-2024 Revenues total $453.7 million and come from three sources:
Local Funding - $157,305,706
Alief ISD receives roughly 35% of its revenue from local tax collections and other local sources including: summer school tuition, interest income, facility rental fees, etc.
State Funding - $278,323,924
Alief ISD receives the majority, a generous 61% of its revenue, from state funding based on the Average Daily Attendance in the district.
Federal Funding - $18,085,000
In Alief ISD, federal funds equate to only about 4% of total revenues and are generated from indirect costs charged to federal grants and programs related to special education services.
The 2023-2024 the Alief ISD School Board passed a balanced budget with revenues and expenditures totaling $453.7 million each. The district will continue to track the budget in real-time and receive monthly updates as we begin planning for the next fiscal year.
Through responsible money management and conservative spending, Alief ISD’s expenditures are expected to be lower than originally projected in the adopted budget. The district hopes to add more than $6 million back into the general fund balance at the end of the budget year.
Approximately 89% of the district’s budget is allocated to personnel costs (salaries and benefits) for our incredible teaching, administrative and support staff.
Approximately $382.2 million of the current budget is earmarked for instruction, instructional resources and media, staff development and student support including counselors and transportation. This is 84% of the budget that goes directly toward instruction and support services for students! Alief ISD is committed to making an impact and is spending the money where it matters most - student learning.
Approximately $10.5 million of the budget pays for central administration. This is only 2% of the total operating budget.
The district's general operating budget includes $55.5 million for operational costs like transportation, facilities/maintenance, security and technology. Another $5.6 million is earmarked for other expenditures the district incurs including appraisals, debt service, and more. This accounts for 14% of the total budget.

Fiscal Fitness aims to spark interest and urgency among our taxpayers. Our students deserve the best opportunities without the threat of budget cuts. Upholding the Texas Constitution, we urge the Legislature to ensure our public schools are well-supported and accessible to all, advocating for a system that nurtures our students' potential and secures their educational future. ParentSquare sustituirá a SchoolMessenger y Remind.
