A STEP BACK, INTO MODERNITY.

A HIGH SPEED RAIL PROPOSAL FOR DFW

EVERETT WATSON ALEX ST CYR

project

What is it?

We were tasked with creating a new station for the incoming high speed rail line being developed between dallas and houston is that it?

no... in addition to designing a transport hub, we were tasked with two other major goals

Follow dallas’ r.e.p (racial equity plan) and other guidelines to make this development a center for growth not only in terms of population but also in terms of culture integrate pre-exsisting modes of public transportation into the development in order to make it the new central hub of all public transportation for the dallas area we think...

This new transit hub is an opportuinity to create a place that not only functions as the nexus of all public tranist in dallas, but it also can be a cultural hub for the locally disadvantaged communities

Site analysis

local amenities

why here? solar study

the south site is located in a spot better suited to have an impact from an economic and social pov

• From a social view, south site is closer to the disenfranchised communities that the R.e.p seeks to help

• from an economic/efficiency stand point, the south site is located directly off of i35e as well as i30

designing for the future greenhouse gas emissions

in addition to using architecture to bring about social change, we are taking into account our ability as designers to make something not just for right now but for the future of our society. with that being said a large portion of this project was to think about and implement sustainable design techniques

diversity & equity

what is the Dallas R.E.P.?

dallas’ workforce, education, and equity committee has developed a plan to increase awareness and try to tear down the barriers preventing a more equitable future. The r.e.p. (racial equity plan) is their roadmap to acheiving that goal.

materials analysis

before after what’d we learn

• initially our building was composed of primarily concrete walls and foundations and as such that led to us having an insanely large amount of embodied carbon

• As a reaction to our initial carbon analysis we researched different wall types and decided to use metal stud walls for a majority of our building instead, resulting in a drop of almost 1,000,000 Kgc02e

Daylighting analysis

before after what’d we learn

pv energy production:

46,852 kwh/year

Energy savings:

$7,028

Building energy offset:

403 m^2 pv panel area

26.7 years payback

pv energy production:

2,367,314 kwh/year

Energy savings:

$355,097

Building energy offset: 11% of 22,425,000 kwh/year

9.9 years payback

• for our initial building we had a lot of glazing with little to no sun shading structure and as a result much of our building’s interior spaces were getting too much light.

• As a reaction to this we decided to design and implement a facade structure in order to help shade those spaces better as well as it functioning as a energy generating structure with it being mainly comprised of small solar panel strips.
