The Art Factory

High Density Artist and Family Residence; Richmond 3121, Victoria

Australia

Individual Work; Design Research Studio D (Collective Living Experience); Master of Architecture and Urban Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Semester 2023.

A creative living collective in the heart of Richmond...

The rise of inflation in Australia currently at 7.8%, property prices have risen toall-time highs. With the medium price sitting at $894,000 as of December 2022.

This has led to many properties being out of reach to many people. these include Young Families and Artists in Particular, most artists usually take up residency In artists colonies which operative on a selective application model based on merit.

Despite Richmond having a median Property price of $1.5 million. The area has a lot to offer in the way of Art Galleries & vast parklands, unforurtanetly some of which are located out of reach to the site.

With this, the design trajectory of this project will focus on how a collective housing model will cater to the user groups of Young Families and Creative Practitioners wanting to call Richmond Home.

Architectural (Urban) Arboretum

Greenification

Project;

South Melbourne Activity Centre, Victoria Australia

Major Research Project (Individual) Urban Infomatics and Modelling; Master of Architecture and Urban Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Semester 2022.

This Project focuses on the greenification of the suburb of South Melbourne and its two Focus Areas (South Melbourne Market/North Precinct and South Melbourne Town Hall/South Precinct) informed by heritage overlays and buffer zones through tectonic placement of plants connected to specific periods of architecture.

As part of the research process, several analyses were conducted related to Heritage overlays and Major architectural landmarks on the Victorian and local heritage registers synthesised with existing tree and plants within the area and different specimens dating back to Pre-Federation (1850’s) the period of the proclamation of South Melbourne.

This data then was then used to create a Shared View (Isovist) analysis with the brightest spots indicating the preferred placement of the trees and plants relating to the different periods of buildings. With the majority of the buildings being from the Victorian period (1850-1890), this led to a high concentration of Victorian era Trees and Plants such as Japanese Maples, Magnolias and Gardenias just to name a few items, planted in the South Precinct.

Eucalyptus Symbolica

Mixed-Use Treehouse;

Mill Park 3082,

Victoria Australia

Individual Work; Design Research Studio C (Up In the Air); Master of Architecture and Urban Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Semester 2 2021.

The aim of the “Eucalyptus Symbolica” treehouse is to bring a package typology to the northern suburbs of design and local programs that will benefit the Mill Park Heights Recreation Reserve and surrounding area with the penultimate goal of providing an Architectural icon enjoyed by the public and its occupants.

Within the following residential and public programs are provided, and these include a raised deck and Corner Shop + Café, while the two upper levels provide two bedrooms, kitchen, bathroom, living and laundry facilities surrounded by lush gardens and the canopy of the 20m River Redgum it sits upon.

Over the 12 weeks various different design principles were explored and included Urban Design, Low-Tek, Passive, Fabrication as well as Urban and cultural heritage. Such methods included the use of external Sun shading, Low-Carbon Emitting materials, simple and traditional joinery methods as well as cultural and historic status through standalone placement and minimal interventions from the footprint and structure.

Veterans Day Centre and “6 week Inpatient Unit”

@ Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital; Ivanhoe 3079, Victoria Australia

Group Work; Design Research Studio A (Disruptive Hospitals);

Master of Architecture and Urban Design at Swinburne University of Technology, Semester 2 2020

“How can architectural design contribute to the recovery of veterans who have PTSD, while revitalizing an old hospital site and its surrounding nature?”

Physical healthcare environments can make a significant impact on how quickly a patient cohort of War Veterans with PTSD can recover through the injections of Art and Creativity.

Several focuses in this design include the injection of Creative Spaces, providing a series of day programs for the patients, as well as walking trails and nature activities surrounding the site. These provide therapeutic aspects through the connections of nature and creativity with the common goal of improved mental health.

In addition, the site will create a stronger connection with the community bringing them on site and paying homage to the heritage of the hospital and surrounding area, thus improving and revitalizing the site and its typography along with the inclusion of the surrounding wildlife

Healthcare architecture in the field of Trauma-Informed Design must highlight the importance of body and mind engagement through emotional and physiological aspects, plus the patients’ perspectives and issues. Intertwining them into a clean, easy-to-use, calming and supportive environment through design interventions.

The Plenty Valley Environmental Education & Visitors Centre @

Yellow Gum Park; Plenty 3090, Victoria Australia

Individual Work; Third Year Design Studio (V); Bachelor of Built Environment at Melbourne Polyetchnic, Semester 1 2018.

The Overall Brief of the following project was to design an Environmental Education and Community Centre in the North-Eastern Melbourne Suburb of Plenty, Centered around the Styles and Principles of Vernacular Architecture; An Architecture style that is based upon Local needs and Traditions, as well as the use of Materials. These include the provision of a lookout to capture a panorama of the Gorge and Surrounding Area and retaining much of the existing environment as possible.

The building itself Provides Academic and community facilities such as workshops, classrooms, laboratories, Kitchen, café, staff areas, housing and general amenities which are to be used by Tertiary Students studying environmental related courses, as well as the General Community visiting the Park.

Skills ArchiCAD; Photoshop; ESD principles; Vernacular design; Spatial planning organisation + layouts; model-making; Urban design and Construction techniques.

Methodologies Vernacular Design through mitigation with local area; Organisation and provision of programs (Public and Educational).

The New Fitzroy Aquatic Centre; Fitzroy 3065, Victoria Australia

Individual Work; Third Year Building Construction Technology (IV); Bachelor of Built Environment at Melbourne Polyetchnic, Semester 1 2018.

As part of our Building Construction Technology Subject; me and my fellow students had to design a new Aquatic Centre in Fitzroy to replace the existing outdoor one.

Primarliy Focusing on Structural and Building Principles, came up with a partially glazed Mid-century inspired design paying homage to the industrious working class past of the surrounding area.

Some of the ideas i came up with for this design include a partially enclosed wintergarden at the front of the building to allow airflow to and from the pool hall via a fully retractable operable wall, along with a Sun Shade/Planter Box Combination, positioned at 44 degrees, in order to accomodate both Winter and Summer Sun around the building.

The John Buncle Centre (North Melbourne Library and Community Centre);

North

Melbourne 3051,

Victoria Australia

Individual Work;

Second Year Design Studio (III); Bachelor of Built Environment at Melbourne Polyetchnic, Semester 1 2017.

The Overall Brief of the following project was to design a New Community Facility with the addition of a Library to replace the aging existing facility as part of the Macaulay-Arden Masterplan.

The new three level facility (backed by a heritage-listed substation and an incorporated facade from the old facility) includes a Two Level Library, Neighborhood House Facilities, Function & Meeting Rooms, Cafe, Playground, Community Gardens as well as a Grandstand and Facilities for the existing Soccer Pitch, which also played an integral part in the overall design of this project.

The Major component of the Soccer Pitch led to a hexagonal and Octagonal Modular tessellating Form of a soccer ball for the overall layout and form of the building, topped off with the use of various pitched roofs forming a tent-inspired canopy provides an eye-catching yet aesthetic pleasing addition to the surrounding area.
