Dear Friends, You know our kids. You’ve heard about them from your own children. You know, the ones who always seem to get sent to the principal’s office and disrupt class. You’ve seen the kid who seems overly sensitive and blows up or cries at the smallest thing. You’ve seen his dad shake his head in frustration and wonder what to do. You know his mom worries about his future and wants to see him happy and healthy again. These kids are the ones you help when you give to Alexander. • Thanks to YOU, over 8,700 children received treatment at Alexander and its affiliates last year. 75% of kids leaving our Day Treatment and Psychiatric Residential Facility successfully transitioned to a more traditional school setting.

• Because of YOU, 92% of kids who complete our community-based Multi-Systemic Therapy are in school, and 88% are living at home rather than in a foster home or residential facility.

• YOU are changing the future for kids who’ve had a tough time. Because YOU support

Our Mission

Alexander, children have access to North Carolina’s most comprehensive care that helps them heal so that they can get on track academically and emotionally. YOU are creating opportunities for a successful future by providing the right treatment at the right time.

deliver an effective and efficient

In this report, you will read about three of the kids currently enrolled in treatment. Because of YOU, thousands of kids like them get the help they need. They grow from being the kids who are always in trouble to well-adjusted kids to self-sufficient contributing adults in our society. We are inspired everyday by YOU! Your support is the greatest endorsement in our belief that freedom from stigma and access to high quality mental health care can change a child’s life for the better and build a brighter future for our community.

array of services, enabling children

With gratitude,

Alexander Youth Network provides quality professional treatment to children with serious emotional and behavioral problems. We

Meet the Kids You Are Helping Moses is a loyal and caring fifteen-year-old, but when he arrived in Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST), he was scared, angry, and at odds with his family. Moses had stolen a car and run away with his girlfriend. As a child, he struggled with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and as a teen, he contended with Oppositional Defiant Disorder (ODD). Moses was fighting in school and on a destructive path.

Moses

A team of trained clinicians worked with Moses and his family. Therapy helped by improving family communication and teaching Moses’ parents new ways to monitor and supervise their teen. Through MST Moses and his family learned to communicate in ways that stopped Moses from running away from his problems and taught him how to handle his anger and frustration. These techniques improved his relationships at home and school. Your donations ensure that we can help over 450 kids like Moses learn healthy behaviors and stay out of trouble each year. Eighty-eight percent of our clients in Multi-Systemic Therapy remained in their own homes and 92% stayed in school or work.

Eight-year-old Nikki was extremely shy and rarely spoke. She found it difficult to make friends and was sad, nervous, and easily frustrated with her schoolwork. Nikki exhibited strange behaviors like refusing to take off her coat. Her teachers, worried about the forlorn little girl, reached out to Alexander’s Outpatient Services program.

Nikki

Nikki received a comprehensive clinical assessment from one of Alexander’s professional therapists and was diagnosed with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Nikki refused to take off her coat because a cousin had sexually abused her, and Nikki found protection and comfort within the coat’s fabric. Nikki’s therapist, Laura, was trained in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and it helped Nikki to gain the tools necessary to manage her anxiety and allow her to feel safe so that she could once again enjoy school and friends. Each year, our Outpatient Services program serves over 2,700 kids like Nikki. We develop a game plan to put them back on track for success at school and home. Your charitable donations provided nearly $432,000 in services not covered by Medicaid and private insurance.

Thirteen-year-old Donavan loves participating in outdoor activities like hiking and skipping stones in the creek that runs around Alexander’s campus. He arrived at Alexander after repeatedly sneaking out of his room at night and fighting with kids at school.

Donavan

When his mother used or sold methamphetamine, Donavan was locked in his room and denied food for days on end. Small irritations made him lash out verbally or physically. He struggled to manage his disruptive mood dysregulation disorder (DMDD), depression, and PTSD. At Alexander, Donavan learned how to manage his big emotions, forgive himself for not being able to protect himself, and trust adults. Your donations provide Donavan with comprehensive psychiatric-directed residential services with 24/7 nursing. He was enrolled in Alexander’s highest level of care, where children’s problems are often so severe that no other agency will serve them. Like 84% of the children treated in the residential program who transition to a more traditional home environment, Donavan was able to return to his father’s home. His family received Intensive In-Home Services, and Donavan was able to return to a regular school. Your charitable donations bridged the gap in funding for this program ($250,000), and 97 kids can receive the care they need. Treatment now means a more successful future as an adult.
