ANNUAL REPORT
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
LETTER FROM BOARD MEMBER
Dear Alexander Family >>>>> Earlier this year a study from the Journal of American Medical Association ranked North Carolina as one of the worst states for care of children with mental and behavioral health challenges. We know that mental health and Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are growing issues for our community. As we reflect on the highlights of our past year we also know that now, more than ever, is the time to champion for the kids at Alexander Youth Network. More than 40% of children at Alexander are diagnosed with one or more severe mental or behavioral health disorders. More than 28% of the children at Alexander are victims of trauma or Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs). Each ACE that a child experiences before the age of 18 increases their chance of risky health behaviors, chronic health conditions, or early death. Through individualized therapeutic care and positive relationship building, we are able to provide hope to the children who are the most vulnerable. Connectedness is key. Every positive connection that a child makes brings them one step closer to recovery. Every relationship and support created at Alexander helps them triumph over adversity.

Alexander Youth Network
While we know that there is more to do for the children of Alexander, we can see that every relationship we build is making a difference in our community. In the past year, we served over 10,000 children and families through our programs and services. This means that over 10,000 children now have one more relationship to support their success in life. As we continue making connections, we want to share the stories of our kids and illustrate how being a part of our family has created an everlasting impact on children’s lives. Each connection made at Alexander is pivotal for a child’s recovery. This includes the very important relationship you have with Alexander by supporting every child that we serve. Being a part of our family means that you are helping provide children with stability and a chance to thrive beyond their adversities. You are the connection that inspires more than 10,000 children to triumph over their mental health diagnosis. Thank you for your unwavering dedication to the children of Alexander Youth Network.

“... HAVING SESSIONS IN A FAMILIAR CLINICAL SPACE MAKES THE TRANSITION EASIER FOR THEM.” - CHELSEA BALDWIN, LICENSED PROFESSIONAL COUNSELOR AT WINSTON-SALEM PEDIATRICS
JACKSON
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
“A kid won’t always go to therapy but will go to the doctor...having sessions in a familiar clinical space makes the transition easier for them.” - Chelsea Baldwin, Licensed Professional Counselor at Winston-Salem Pediatrics
Jackson was getting in trouble at school, had severe anxiety in public spaces, and was not comfortable being left alone. He was struggling and his family knew that he needed help. After speaking with his pediatrician at WinstonSalem Pediatrics, Jackson was referred to our integrated care program – a combination of medical and behavioral care in one office. Jackson was able to receive clinical outpatient therapy sessions at his pediatrician’s office. During his first appointment, Jackson was diagnosed with severe anxiety and over the next three months, he met with our licensed family therapist, Chelsea Baldwin, once a week. Through Jackson’s weekly therapy sessions, hands-on activities, and dedicated family sessions, he was able to use

coping skills to manage his anxiety in social environments. Jackson is just one of the many success stories through the integrated care program – by combining behavioral healthcare and essential wellness under one roof, kids experience real recovery. Baldwin contributes Jackson’s quick success to the familiarity of his pediatric office and the ability to check-in with his parents at each session to understand how he was progressing at home. “It is a collaborative effort...Having parents and doctors in the office and accessible during sessions makes it easy to check on progress outside of therapy sessions. We can easily check in with parents on how skills are being implemented at home and with doctors when we need to know more about the family dynamic or how kids are doing with new medications.”
MEET THE KIDS OF ALEXANDER
“AT AGE 12, ALEXANDER WOULD BECOME THE FIRST PLACE WHERE TIA WOULD FIND STABILITY, POSITIVITY, AND LOVE.”
>>>>>>>>>>>>> TIA After years of neglect, abuse, and separation from her family, Tia arrived at Alexander. Tia was separated from her biological family at a young age due to her mother’s struggle with mental health issues along with other tragic events. For years she lived with a relative who neglected and also emotionally and verbally abused her. At age 12, Alexander would become the first place where Tia would find stability, positivity, and love. From her first day in treatment it was obvious that all Tia wanted was someone to see her and to love her. She was sweet and compassionate, but also reserved and would only speak to others through the use of a prop, doll, or puppet. Her kind demeanor made it easy for staff to connect with her, but she was limited in what she would share without her props. Over time, staff were able to learn more about Tia and show her that she mattered.
After a few months, Tia began communicating less and less with props. She was paired with a lunch buddy to see how she would react to meeting new people and if she would still use props to talk with others. After several visits with her lunch buddy, Tia stopped using the props for communication. The positive interactions she had with staff and her lunch buddy taught Tia that she could depend on others to be loved and cared for. And, most importantly, that she could express herself without the use of props. Through programs at Alexander, Tia was able to grow and form positive relationships with others, open up to clinicians about her past, and eventually overcome her traumatic childhood. The positive interactions Tia experienced at Alexander prepared her for a transition to day treatment and a therapeutic foster home. While Tia found hope in her progress, Alexander gave her much more - she found resiliency and she found a family of support.

MEET THE KIDS OF ALEXANDER
“HE NEEDS ME MORE.
>>>>>>>>>>>>> MASON Mason came to Alexander in desperate need of compassion, trust, and most importantly a safe place to heal. After growing up in a hostile environment and being physically abused in a foster home, Mason had little faith in others. His experiences along with his anti-social behaviors made it hard to find a successful foster care placement or permanent home. Mason received treatment in our Psychiatric Residential Treatment facility where he received full-time care along with coordinated behavioral therapies based on his diagnosis. As a part of his Person-Centered Plan, he was enrolled in the pilot class of the Bark and Heal program shortly after arriving on campus. Mason was able to select his canine companion, Storm, who helped Mason began his path to recovery. The pain and suffering that both Mason and Storm experienced caused them to be frequent runners. During the first 4-weeks of the program Storm made multiple getaway attempts just like Mason did when he came to Alexander.
6
By week five, Mason had his first relationship based in trust with Storm. Mason learned how to communicate what Storm was feeling to staff members during his Bark and Heal sessions and develop trust through positive reinforcement. Soon, Mason was able to use the communication skills he learned through caring for Storm and translate his own fears and feelings. Mason began to open up, make eye contact, talk to other kids and adults on campus – he no longer destroyed property, and most importantly, he stopped running. Over the course of the program, Mason changed dramatically all because he learned how to trust and no longer felt the need to run to find safety. Mason continued to dedicate his time to Storm through Bark and Heal and even had the opportunity to be a trainer for the second class. His participation in the program along with the other therapeutic activities allowed him to heal. Mason was paired with a therapeutic foster home through Alexander. To this day, almost a year later, Mason has made a permanent home with his foster family and has not run once.

VOLUNTEERS OF ALEXANDER
>>>>>>>>>>>>>
BETH JONES – VOLUNTEER Not many folks can say that they have been involved with an organization for over 40 years but Beth Jones, a Charlotte local, can. Her first experience with Alexander was volunteering with her mom while she was in high school. For nearly 18 years, Beth worked at Alexander post college, in a variety of roles – starting as a Certified Recreation Therapist and ending her tenure as the Director of Donor and Volunteer Engagement. When Beth retired, her involvement with Alexander didn’t end, she returned to her volunteer roots to stay connected with the Alexander family. “I realized I was a part of AYN and it was always a part of me.” said Beth Jones. She contributes her continued support for the kids at Alexander to the family-like culture of staff, kids, and volunteers. Through volunteering, Beth continued to be a support system for the kids of Alexander. Her dedication to our kids and families inspired positivity in their lives and hope for recovery. Earlier this year, Alexander proudly named the new family cottages in her honor as a reminder to families to be engaged and dedicated. The cottages are a vital part of recovery and rehabilitation for families whose kids reside at the full-time residential program. Families have an opportunity to spend time together without the barrier of lodging costs. Most importantly the family cottages allow families to reconnect and reinforce a healthy relationship dynamic.
8
For 40 years, Beth has been dedicated to Alexander and has made a tremendous impact on our agency, volunteers and most importantly, our children. “The bottom line for me has always been the people. I got to be a part of so many precious little lives and see them recover with hope and a renewed identity - it was the best experience.”
DONORS OF ALEXANDER
MARY BALDAUF – DONOR >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> “I am a support system for Alexander families and kids. It takes a village and if you have the time and resources, then there is no reason to not support these kids.” - Mary Baldauf, Donor Spotlight. Being a donor at Alexander is more than a financial commitment. Our donors are dedicated, consistent, and most importantly - a part of the Alexander family. Mary Baldauf is one of our many donors, who has become a recognizable member of the Alexander team. Mary has been involved with Alexander as a donor and volunteer for about two years. Mary’s time with Alexander has expanded from being a donor to a Lunch Buddy. Once a week she spends the afternoon with one of our kids in Day Treatment. In the past year, Mary has not missed one Thursday lunch date. Through her time at Alexander Mary has been able to support the quality programs at Alexander through her donorship and most importantly change a life through her time as a volunteer.

On Monday and Thursday afternoons, Geri Mando, volunteers in the Alexander Children’s Foundation office. For the past five years, she has been a trusted volunteer, assisting our development staff with auditing support of our database management system. Over the years, her volunteer hours have saved time by streamlining and enhancing our donor relations database. Direct service volunteers like Geri ensure that foundation dollars can go directly to our kids rather than indirect costs.
