Dear Friends, You know those kids? The kids who are disruptive in class, disrespectful to authority figures, and seem to always be in trouble? Those kids are the ones you help when you give to Alexander. If you got to know those kids, you’d probably find a history of abuse and/or neglect. They act out because of the trauma they have experienced.

• Thanks to YOU, over 8,800 children received treatment and/or services last year at Alexander and its affiliates. 71% of kids leaving our Day Treatment and Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility are able to successfully transition to a more traditional school setting.

• Because YOU give, our staff are sharing their expertise with public school teachers and counselors so that kids have a better chance of staying in school. YOU are changing how our community understands the needs of kids with a mental health diagnosis.

• YOU are changing the future for children who have experienced an unstable past. Because YOU support Alexander, children have access to comprehensive care that helps them overcome trauma so that they can get on track academically and emotionally.

YOU are creating opportunities for a successful future by providing the right treatment at the right time.

In this report, you will read about three of the kids currently enrolled in treatment. Because of YOU, thousands of kids like them get the help they need to overcome trauma. Meet the Kids You Are Helping 8 year-old Sam lives with his mother and two siblings. His father is incarcerated. Sam has a history of psychosis, serious aggression, and threatening to kill his family and harm himself. His parents have a history of mental illness and his mother was a victim of domestic violence while she was pregnant with him. Sam also has some developmental delays. Prior to coming to Alexander’s Psychiatric Residential Treatment Facility (PRTF), Sam was hospitalized twice and participated with his family in Intensive In-Home Therapy.

Your donations provide Sam with comprehensive psychiatrist-directed residential services with 24/7 nursing. He is enrolled in Alexander’s highest level of care, where children’s problems are often so severe that other agencies will not serve them.

81 percent of the children treated in PRTF are able to transition to a more traditional home environment.

Your charitable donations bridge the gap in funding for this program ($435,000) so that 90 kids each year can get the help they need. Treatment now means a more successful future as an adult.

Samantha is 15 years old. She lives with her younger sister, her parents (who are divorced but living in same home) and her paternal aunt. Samantha’s father has a history of domestic violence and was incarcerated prior to Samantha’s birth. There is a family history of drug use and schizophrenia. Samantha has endured verbal abuse by her father. Samantha’s parents and teacher report that she talks back, does not do chores, and regularly destroys her room. She is disorganized, hyper, and easily distracted.

Samantha is enrolled in our Outpatient Services. This program is our lowest level of care and is often an entry point for other services. Samantha takes part in an officebased evaluation, psychotherapy, and medication management provided by licensed clinicians, psychiatrists and nurse practitioners.

Your donations ensure that Outpatient Services can serve over 2,000 children each year. Charitable donations provide nearly $590,000 in expenses not covered

by Medicaid and private insurance. Because this is a gateway to more intensive treatment, it is a crucial service that helps kids get the right treatment at the right time.

Jason is currently receiving Multi-Systemic Therapy (MST). This treatment is a highly structured, outcome-based, in-home therapy for youth with delinquent behaviors and their families. This program, which focuses on keeping kids in their homes while empowering parents to effectively manage their child’s difficult behaviors, has excellent outcomes.

Jason lives with his adoptive mother, who adopted him after he was abused by his biological parents. His adoptive mother is suspected of neglect. After a year that included 18 visits from the police to his home and because he was aggressive to his parents and teachers, Jason spent three months in a group home. MST is a step down from residential care and an effective tool for helping Jason’s mom to learn how to parent his particular behaviors.

Your donations ensure that we can continue to help 120 kids every year like Jason learn healthy behaviors and stay out of trouble. When you give, you are providing a brighter future for Jason and for our entire community. 82 percent of the clients we served in MST remained in their own homes, 90 percent stayed in school or work, and 73 percent had no new legal charges during treatment. *Names and photos have been changed to protect the privacy of the individuals.
