El programa GEM te ayuda a progresar By Fany Verdu “Great Explorations in Mathematics “ (GEM) le permite a los estudiantes con talento en las matemáticas progresar más rápidamente de lo que lo harían en un programa regular. Para calificar para GEM, los estudiantes deben tener una nota de FCAT de 380 o más alta en matemáticas y de 300 en lectura. Los estudiantes GEM necesitan ir más allá, analizar problemas que no sean rutinarios y estudiar en profundidad para ver la belleza, la elegancia, y las aplicaciones que tienen las matemáticas que están aprendiendo. Los estudiantes GEM en el 6º grado terminan un currículo de pre-Álgebra. Los estudiantes de 7º grado toman el curso equivalente de secundaria de Álgebra I. Los estudiantes de 8º toman el curso equivalente al curso de Geometría de secundaria. Ser bilingüe mejora tu actividad mental Por Beatriz Lopez Uno por lo general habla principalmente de las ventajas sociales y culturales que acarrea el hablar varios idiomas, obviando los efectos positivos que tiene este hecho en los procesos cognitivos. Un artículo publicado por el NY Times en marzo, describe como luego de revisar una colección de resultados de estudios sobre los efectos del bilingüismo, se determinó que en los niños criados con dos idiomas mejoran las funciones de ejecución, las cuales se encargan de dirigir las actividades que involucran los procesos de atención. Esto se debe a la capacidad de los bilingües de inhibir distracciones y mantener la concentración en el foco principal de atención. La habilidad se desarrolla a través de la
necesidad que presenta el hablante de aprender a manejar dos sistemas lingüísticos de manera simultánea, evitando interferencia entre estos a la hora de comunicarse. Lo más importante de todo, es que nunca es tarde para aprender un segundo idioma, y gozar de los beneficios que genera para nuestro cerebro.
Being bilingual can improve your brain function By Beatriz Lopez People generally only talk about the social and cultural benefits brought on by speaking more than one language, tending to forget any additional benefits this can have on the different cognitive processes. An article published in the NY Times in March, describes how after reviewing a series of psychological studies based on the effects of bilingualism, results showed that children raised with at least two languages proved to have better execution functions than monolingual children. These are the functions in charge of the brain’s attention processes. This ability to better manage the brain’s execution functions is due to the bilingual 12
speaker’s developed skills in suppressing outside distractions and keeping focused on the main topic of interest. ¡ESTO ES DEMASIADO!
Por María Dolores Ara En los últimos tiempos se viene usando la palabra demasiado, “demasiado mal”. “Demasiado” es un adverbio de cantidad que se forma con la unión de la preposición “de” y el adverbio de cantidad “más”. Por lo tanto, su sentido inmediato y más exacto sería usarlo para describir lo que está “de más”: que sobra o excede límites aceptables. De hecho, significa exceso. Para que algo “exceda” algún límite, debe tener límites; por lo tanto sólo puedo aplicarle el calificativo de “demasiado” a la materia, a lo tangible: una sopa puede estar “demasiado” caliente, y un café puede tener “demasiado” azúcar. Un pantalón puede quedar “demasiado” grande, y una casa puede ser “demasiado” pequeña. En cualquiera de estos casos, el uso de la palabra indica una valoración negativa: si algo tiene o está “demasiado” así o asá; está mal. Nada en exceso es bueno: ya lo decían los filósofos.
Pero, resulta que nos topamos en estos tiempos que vuelan, con el uso de “demasiado” aplicado a nombres abstractos, intangibles y… ¡con valoración positiva! ¿Quién no ha oído: “él es demasiado bello”, o “esa película es demasiado buena”? No existe tal cosa como exceso de bondad o de belleza……., y en caso de que así fuera, estaría mal. Significaría que al sobrepasar los límites, no se conserva ni lo bueno, ni lo bello; pasando a convertirse en feo y malo. Todo lo contrario de lo que se quiere decir. Porque, suponemos, que el hablante tiene la intención de evaluar como muy positivo lo que considera “demasiado” bueno y bello. El lenguaje posee una cantidad considerable de paradojas que, en casos como éste, pasan a la categoría de pesadillas. Para rematar el tema, también se aplica a lo que disgusta: “ese carro es demasiado malo”, “el examen estaba demasiado difícil”, “lo hiciste demasiado mal”. ¿Qué quieren decir? ¿Qué si rebasa las fronteras de lo malo, pasa a ser bueno? Estamos seguros de que se trata de todo lo contrario: “demasiado malo, o difícil, o mal” quiere decir “peor que malo”. Así como, lo que es “demasiado” bueno, pretende expresar “mejor que bueno”. Aquí entre nos, y medio en secreto, es mejor dedicarse sencillamente (no hay nada mejor que lo sencillo para expresarse) a usar los términos: muy, y el sufijo “ísimo”. Muy bueno, muy difícil, bellísimo, malísimo, dan perfecta cuenta del grado de aprecio o rechazo con que valoramos las cosas. ¿Por qué hacerlo mal, si es más fácil y mejor hacerlo bien? Y, por favor, no quieran a nadie “demasiado”. Puede llegar a ser francamente inconveniente. Su pareja se lo agradecerá y el idioma más. Quizás, demasiado.
IT IS TOO MUCH! By María Dolores Ara In recent times we have been using the word too much, “too bad”. “Too much” is an adjective of quantity that is formed by the union of the adverb “too” and the adjective of quantity “much”. Therefore, its immediate and more accurate sense would use it to describe what is “excessive”: superabundant or exceeds acceptable limits. 14
A pant may be “too” big, and a House may be “too” small. In either of these cases, the use of the Word indicates a negative valuation: If something has or is “too much” either this or that; It is wrong. Nothing in excess is good: already said the philosophers. But, we encounter that in these days, the use of “too much” applied to abstract things, intangible and… with positive sense! Having you heard: “he is too beautiful”, or “this movie is too good”?. Such things do not exist as excess of goodness or beautifulness……., and when it does, it would be wrong. It would mean that when the limits are exceeded, neither the wellness or the beautiful will be preserved, becoming ugly and bad. Just the opposite of what you want to say. Because, we assume, that the speaker intends to evaluate as very positive what he considers “too” good and beautiful. The language has a considerable amount of paradoxes that in cases like these, go to the category of nightmares. To finish the topic, it also applies to what you dislike: “that car is too bad”, “the exam was too difficult”, “you did it too wrong”. What do they want to say? That if it exceeds the borders of bad, happens to be good? We are sure that it is the opposite; too bad, difficult, or wrong, means worth than bad. As well as what is “too” good, intended to express “better than well”. Here among us, and as a little secret, it is better to simplify (there is nothing better than simplicity to express yourselves) using the terms: very. Very good, very difficult, beautiful, very bad, give perfect account of the degree of appreciation or rejection with which we value things. Why do it wrong, if it is easier and better to do it right? And, please, don’t love anyone “too much”. It can be really inconvenient. Your partner will thank you and the language. Perhaps too much.

consejos para prerparse para el SAT y el ACT Por Hinda Elman Las vacaciones de verano se pueden emplear eficientemente estudiando para los exámenes de admisión a las universidades (SAT y ACT). Si desea asegurar su entrada a la universidad de su preferencia debe tener un percentil mayor que el promedio del resto de los estudiantes.
Algunas recomendaciones para estar bien preparado son:

Tome ejemplos reales de los tests. Para el SAT puede conseguirlos en : http://sat. collegeboard.org/practice y para el ACT en : http://www.actstudent.org/testprep/ index.html. Mientras más practique mas chances tienen de subir su nota. Examine los resultados de las prácticas y exámenes anteriores para detectar sus fallas y concéntrese en mejorar las mismas.
Estudie las estrategias diseñadas específicamente para ayudarlo con las preguntas del test.

Aprenda a manejar su tiempo de respuesta: ambos exámenes son contra reloj y el principal problema que presentan muchos estudiantes es la falta de tiempo para completarlos. Recuerde contestar primero las preguntas que sabe resolver y dejar para el final las más difíciles: todas tienen la misma puntuación, por lo que no amerita perder demasiado tiempo en cada una de ellas. Establezca un plan de estudio acorde con la fecha del test que desea presentar. Es recomendable empezar al menos seis o siete semanas antes de la fecha y dedicarle un tiempo diario al estudio.

Take real examples of the tests. Review the results of previous exams and practices to detect its faults and focus on improving them. Study strategies designed specifically to help you with the questions of the test.

Learn how to handle your time of responds: both tests are against the clock and the main problem presented by many students is the lack of time to complete them. Remember to answer first the questions that you know how to solve and leave to the end the hardest: all of them have the same score, so it is not worthy spending too much time in each one of them. Establish a plan to study according with the date of the test that you want to take. It is advisable to start at least six or seven weeks before the date of the exam and dedicate a daily time to study.

Consejos para los padres antes de reunirse con los maestros
Por Elizabeth V Briceno El contacto entre padres y maestros es importante para el futuro de sus hijos. Los maestros están con sus hijos todos los días y pueden observar cambios y actitudes en la conducta de los niños que los padres no perciben, de modo que no importa lo ocupado que estén, el trabajo que tengan o la distancia entre la oficina y la escuela, esa reunión debe producirse al menos una vez al año. Sin embargo, antes de ello debe hacer una tarea previa: 1.Hable con su hijo. Conozca las inquietudes de su hijo, que le gusta o le disgusta de la escuela y como es la relación con sus maestros. Es importante que su hijo sienta que cuenta con su apoyo. 2.Prepare una lista de preguntas. Teachers are with their children every day and can see changes and attitudes in the conduct of children that parents do not perceive, so that no matter how busy they are, the work they have, or the distance between their office and the school, that meeting must occur at least once a year. However, before that you must make a prior task: 1. Talk with your son. Know the concerns of your son, what does he likes or dislikes form the school and as how is his relationship with his teachers. It is important that your child feels that he has your support. 2.Prepare a list of questions. A way to gain time and not forget anything, is to make the list on topics such as the behavior of your child, their academic performance, sports etc. 3.Be honest. Information that has the teacher might have of your son may be important to promote its success. If your child has health problems, takes medication or if there is a difficult situation in the family that could affect the child, such as a divorce, death of a relative, or moving home, any of these things might affect the child and as a result their school performance. 20
