Which are better: Advanced Placement (AP) International Baccalaureate (IB), or Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) All of these curriculums have merit. AP is the most common curriculum as it’s available to all schools either in school or via Virtual School. In AP classes, colleges and universities often grant IB In the IB program, students receive an advanced high school diploma and those who pass six exams can sometimes enter college as a sophomore AICE Students who receive an AICE diploma and pass the exams with a grade of E or higher receive college credit and sometimes advanced standing based on their scores in these examinations from the public universities and colleges in Florida and other schools around the country. Students should check with each school about which credits or which scores are accepted. For example, some schools give students credit for 3s on the AP tests and some only accept 4s or 5s. Several schools outside of Florida don’t yet recognize AICE credits as it’s still a relatively new and predominately Florida-based program.

The Sagemont School’s New Visual and Performing Arts Center Is Now Open!

The new Visual and Performing Arts Center at The Sagemont School’s Upper School Campus is open and students couldn’t be more excited. The 10,000 square foot facility features a 150 seat Black Box Theater, two large art rooms and two soundproof music rooms. Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School, said, “The new Visual and Performing Arts Center is a transformational addition to our Upper School Campus. The hundreds of students interested in the arts at our school finally have a home of their own.”

ESOL parent Ambassador program is an initiative shared between Esol parents and the ESOL Department of Broward County. We were born with the idea of transferring the knowledge we got during the process of settling in this community and thus alleviate the large uncertainties that Esol student families may have towards the American educational system, as well as of its role of inhabitant of their community. Thanks to our volunteer program we contribute with school district encouraging the Esol parents to get involved in their child’s education for their rapid insertion. Helping immigrant families, not proficient in the English language, in the process of adaptation and transition within the Broward County public schools and the community, drives their interest in being engage and informed so that they achieve the confidence and tranquility that contribute with the success of their children. What benefits provide our volunteering to Broward County public schools? • Esol families will be aware of the importance of building a close relationship with their schools; they will actively participate in the education of their children; and will understand the importance of engaging, without language limitations, in volunteer work areas much required by our schools in Broward County.

Another relevant aspect is that we work hand by hand with principals and Esol contacts of each campus, creating customized plans for achieving the rapid inclusion of newly arrived families: • Welcome letter to new families. • Meetings of welcome for new families of foreign languages • General meetings to expose what is Esol and how it works • Esol parent volunteers creation for each school • Presentations on basic concepts of the American educational system • Private meetings with families who have requested our assistance with transferring specific and detailed information for students at all levels of education. • We do follow up on the concerns raised and its resolution • We create our own database, and thus having constant and important information to our target, • Presence in events organized by schools and the community • Workshops for parents on topics: new standards of evaluation in FL, the elective subjects, etc.

In Weston, Florida, CypressBay High offers a surplus of clubs and other extra-curricular activities. Out of all of these, DECA is the one that offers the most opportunities to prepare students for the professional world. Itis a cocurricular program that pairs business classes without of theclassroom experiences. It offers district, state, and international competitions. Students have the option to prepare a business model and presentit to judge sortake a test on business knowledge. As the competition advances, the testers have to do role-plays: spur of the moment scenarios where the company must strategize a solution to a company’s problem. Not only does this DECA chapter provide for competitive exposure, but it also strives to improve the community. Currently, this DECA chapter is partnering with a charity called “The Spring” located in Tampa Bay. They have made it their goal to collect as much pasta, rice, crayons, and tooth brushes for those serviced by the spring. The manager of this project, Casey Harmouth, believest hat “the work we do at school actually makes an impact on people’s lives, right here in Florida. Knowing that is a great feeling.” DECA truly forms a student’s background for success in adulthood.
En Weston, Florida, CypressBay High ofrece una multitud de actividades extracurriculares. DECA es una de ellas que ofrece el mayor número de oportunidades preparando a los estudiantes para el mundo profesional. Es un programa que permite a los estudiantes tomar clases de negocios mientras obtienen experiencias fuera de la aula. Ofrecen competencias comenzando al nivel distrital hasta el internacional. Los estudiantes prepararan un modelo de negocio y luego lo presentan a jueces. También tienen la opción de tomar un examen que prueba su conocimiento de negocios y después elaboraran estrategias para solucionar un problema rápidamente. Aunque DECA expone a los estudiantes a la competencia, también se esfuerza por mejorar a la comunidad. Actualmente, DECA esta asociado con una organización beneficencia llamada “The Spring” (La Primavera) en la Bahía de Tampa. DECA tiene la meta de recoger grandes cantidades de pasta, arroz, lápices de colores, y cepillos de dientes para la organización. La directora de este proyecto, Casey Harmouth, cree que “el trabajo que hacemos en la escuela realmente impacta la vida de los necesitados aquí en la Florida.
