Hi ALC family! We thank God that members come from far and near to worship, fellowship and serve God together. Unfortunately, for some members it is a struggle to make it to church. As a result, they end up not coming at all. In 2015 and beyond we want to change that and here's how you can help. We would like to develop a roster of volunteer drivers who would be willing to transport members (particularly older members) living within your commune possibly to and from church service and/or to and from church-related functions. Please get in touch with Viva Combs Thorsen of the Membership Committee (vivacombs@yahoo.com) or Ingrid Fossland of the Fellowship Committee (ingridfossland@hotmail.com).

Why the American Lutheran Church? Part 2 By Gillian Margaret Beresford Holby We will never be able to understand the wondrous ways God works in our lives. All I know for certainty is that He does. I know that He must have seen the burdens I was struggling with and I also knew that many Chris ans were praying for me, an assurance which comforted me. To clarify what I have just wri$en I will explain. John was my third child. A dear li$le boy who sang a lot, played with baby brother Peter showing no sign of jealousy! Another thing which I tried hard to sweep under the rug was the fact that John did not speak! Not a word. It was in this condi on that Carol and I introduced him to the Americans, explained a li$le and he was wrapped up in love. Chris an love. For the very first me I entered a congrega on where love of Jesus and love for one another was what made that building in Fritzners gate so different. Is it any wonder that we returned there and quickly made good friends. AND QUICKLY BECAME FAMILY. The family most of us missed having had our roots in other countries, mainly America. Fi8y years later things are not quite the same. New people are not welcomed, li$le children are overlooked, the elderly are ignored and to feel you are embraced by the family love of Jesus?? I have never heard that said. To be honest, I am really sad. The world has changed and not for the be$er. But God does not change. His love is the same His compassion is the same But we are not. How about each one of us commi:ng ourselves to JESUS Today we see signs and slogans publicly displaying these works of evil all over the place. Works which snake-like sneak into our subconscious minds. Jesus teaches us the other way, God's Way, the Way of love, compassion, and the rest of the verbs which are packed in the word -- LOVE. I am red of hearing people complaining "the sermon was good but nobody spoke to me/looked a8er li$le Sam or Olav or Janie". Nobody greeted me or cared". Where is this Chris an caring?????? I could fill this page with ?'s The truth is, I truly do love Jesus and He sees me through the ravages of old age. In all details! Note: The verse “Others” on the cover of this months Messenger is from a favorite poem of Jill’s and one that she recommended! 18

New Interim Pastor We are so happy to welcome Pastor Alicia Partee to serve the ALC during the interim period between the departure of Pastor Rogness & Gerry and the arrival of the new pastor to be called. Pastor Partee and her husband, Dr. Tyrone Partee, moved to Norway a li$le over one year ago as Tyrone accepted the job as senior chaplain at Ila state prison. Pastor Alicia most recently served for two years as Interim Pastor of Ascension Lutheran Church in Los Angeles prior to moving to Norway. She was appointed to that posi on by the bishop of the ELCA’s Southwestern California Synod even though she is ordained originally in a non-denomina onal ministry. She is a graduate of Western Seminary in the US, and besides being a minister is a licensed marriage and family therapist. She has the unique ability, being both a pastor and a marriage and family therapist, to integrate her Chris an values while providing counseling services to individuals, couples and families. As a biblical teacher and an author of the, “Real Rela onships Devo onal,” she brings a wealth of resources to all ages and situa ons on living a life for God. Pastor Alicia shares her spiritual journey, her knowledge, educa on, and biblical truths with a refreshing honesty. A8er working in telecommunica ons for 20+ years at fortune 500 and startup companies, she felt God’s call her into full me ministry. She returned to school and earned a Bachelor of Science in Theology from William Jessup University and a Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Western Seminary. She is also a cer fied Prepare/Enrich facilitator. Her passion is to bring healing and restora on to marriages and families. Previously, Pastor Alicia served at Maranatha Chris an Center in San Jose, California for 14 years spending 4 of those years as the Administra ve Pastor; and two years as interim Pastor at Ascension Lutheran Church in Los Angeles, Ca. She and her husband are proud parents of six children and 3 grandchildren. She will be available through the church office beginning February 2; she will have the same phone and email contacts as Pastor Rogness and Pastor Stewart. Her first Sunday leading worship will be February 15.

Please welcome her! 3

Pastor’s Corner

Relax! God is in Charge

Psalm 37 happens to be one of my favorite Psalms. It was comfort during a difficult me in my life. At that me it read like an instruc on manual for my life. I was told what I must do to make it through difficult situa ons. Whether the situa on is personal or not, we can find instruc ons for our daily lives. Let’s take a look at some of the instruc ons: Fret Not! Every day that I turn on the TV, read the newspaper or read CNN on my iPad, I understand that the world is filled with chaos. Many mes a8er watching the news I felt anxious, depressed and even angry at mes. Psalm 37 reminds us to relax! God is in charge. We are commanded not to fret, but rather to trust in the Lord, delight in Him and commit ourselves to Him. It sounds simple! Over the past years I have seen an increase in people who seek counseling for anxiety. It has been said that worry is interest paid on trouble that may or may not happen. It is usually something we have no control over. I can admit that I get aggravated when evil people seem to prosper. David tells us not to fret and not to be envious of the workers of iniquity (v. 1) “Fre:ng” or we can say “panicking” usually only makes the situa ons worse. I have a brother in Christ who was a diver and lifeguard. He says when a drowning person panics, fights and kicks during a rescue a$empt; the lifeguard has a greater risk of drowning. He told me that he has to knock the person out to save their life .

Trust in the Lord Trust in the Lord (v. 3) is the next instruc on. Things we trust will be tested. People have trusted in wealth and recession came. We have trusted in our friends, and then Judas popped up. We trusted in our health and the doctor told us we have cancer. Things and circumstances can change at any moment. But God’s word in trying and difficult mes is to trust Him in all things. One of the things that is certain about fre:ng is that it does not change the situa on or the problem. The only one that can change the situa on is God. Instead of fre:ng, trust in God, our maker and our healer! Delight in the Lord

ALC Women’s Fellowship 2015 ALC is home to women from many different na ons, from all walks of life and all age groups. This variety offers wonderful possibili es: a colourful tapestry of spiritual insight and experience, s mula ng conversaon, encouragement and the joy of making new friends. You are warmly invited to join us in fellowship as we gather once a month. In 2015 we plan to have a theme running through the year which will be picked up in various ways in our mee ngs: “Your Story Ma$ers – to God and to the World”. Our aim is to explore together how Bible truths can shape our busy lives, help us grow and be a$rac ve as followers of Christ in our world. We are very glad that Piia Pretsch and Alicia Partee have agreed to become ac vely involved in facilita ng our gatherings. Throughout the year we will try out some new ideas and con nually evaluate how to best serve the women at the ALC when it comes to loca on, me and concept. And of course, we will con nue to enjoy food, fellowship and fun! David goes beyond trust and now instructs us to “Delight yourself also in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart (v. 4).” The word delight means to “please, sa sfy, thrill, rejoice, ravish, and comfort yourself in the Lord.” David found encouragement by thinking about the victories God had given him. David is instruc ng us to shi8 our focus and a$en on. What he is re4

God Bless You on Your Special Day! Day! February Birthdays

‘To delight in the Lord’ is God’s way of teaching us to shi8 the atmosphere. Ponder on the last me he brought you all the way through. Think about the last me He answered your prayers and give Him praise. Something changes in the atmosphere when we praise God. Sadness seems to bow out, anxiety flees and we find strength in our God. The last instruc on moves us to ac on. Here the command is to “commit your way to the Lord, trust also in Him, and He shall bring it to pass (v. 5).” The Lord says that we are to cast our burdens on Him for He cares for us. Now it is me to act on the faith that we have in God and Christ Jesus! If you are carrying around a heavy burden, you can lighten the load by giving it over to the Lord. Remember, we may have to give it to Him more than once. We have a tendency to pick our burdens back up again. Li8 up thine eyes unto the hills. From where does our help come from? Our help comes from the Lord! Keep moving in God’s purpose for your life. Note the progression: fret not, trust, delight and commit. These are intertwined and inseparable. What are you worried about? What has you up at night? I encourage you to read through Psalm 37. It not only has instruc ons, but promises. The promises of God are based on you ac ng upon God’s word. The Lord watches over the innocent day by day and they possess a permanent inheritance (v. 18). But s ll we must act and move on the faith that we have in God. God is in charge and He will direct our path! Pastor Alicia

President’s Corner The new council is now installed and ready to go to work for our congrega on. Our first mee ng will take place towards the end of February, and we will have our annual council retreat soon therea8er. I want to thank the old council for all their dedicated work. It is a group of experienced commi$ee chairs who make up the new council as only two commi$ee chairs went off this year. A special thank you goes to Amalia-Diana Prodan who has led the educa on commi$ee for the last 2 years, and Marielle Minutella who has been the volunteers chairman this past year. They have both generously contributed in many ways to ac vi es at the ALC. Sunday February 1st was the last Sunday interim pastor Peter Rogness was with us. Through a farewell coffee hour we had a nice sendoff for Peter (and Gerry). We wanted to show him how much we appreciate his leadership through this transi on period. We are so thankful to God for sending Peter to us. What a blessing it was to have his experience and knowledgeable guidance for five months. Peter and Gerry were such a friendly and welcome addi on to our church family. We pray for them, and send another big thank you to Pastor Rogness and Gerry!

We are nearing the end of the search for our next pastor, and we con nue to pray for the candidate and the call commi$ee. I want to thank the commi$ee for all the me and effort they are pu:ng into the process of finding us a new spiritual leader. Our a$en on will soon be focused on prepara ons for receiving our new pastor. However it will be some me yet before the new pastor is in Oslo. We have been blessed that Pastor Alicia Partee has agreed to func on as our new interim pastor. Pastor Alicia promises to bring in new thoughts and ideas to our church. We will benefit from her experience from past work in an ELCA congrega on, and she will further prepare us for the arrival of our new pastor. Pastor Peter Rogness and Gerry It was a sunny day on Monday September 1, 2014, Arthur went to the airport to pick up our new interim Pastor and his wife from Minnesota. I was wai ng at the Parsonage and I remember I was very excited. The sun was shining beau fully which really con nued almost all through the fall of 2014 in Oslo and I was very happy for them to come and enjoy the sunny side of Oslo. Arthur’s car arrived and there came Gerry out first. Her beau ful smile and so8 blond hair was Rie Melhoos shining, and Peter followed and we all said hello!! From that day on I had a wonderful me with them both in and out of the church office. Being a church office secretary is a wonderful thing but it is inevitable that I have to say good bye to the wonderful people I work so closely with every day. I knew Peter and Gerry would not stay so long but I am so thankful that they came to ALC ! At work, Peter was the best boss you can imagine. It was very interes ng to hear his experiences as Bishop. We all know how good Peter is preaching on Sunday. And his children’s messages were so amazing. I think he likes to keep it very simple so that the most important message in the lesson will easily go into their li$le hearts. Gerry was a school teacher for a long me and I know she was behind many of the great messages. Gerry and Peter are a loving couple and I think they are hopelessly inseparable. When I spoke with Gerry, she was talking about Peter. And when I was talking with Peter he was also talking about Gerry. They are a set. This set of loving parents love all their 4 children and grandchildren. They always put other people first and think what they can do for others. I have never seen such a selfless couple like Gerry and Peter. One Friday I came to the church and found someone had le8 a shopping cart in our church parking lot and there was also so much garbage in our garbage bins that they did not close. I was struggling for a while to clear them and there came Peter jogging (Friday was his off day) and asked what I was doing. Before I started to explain, he started to push down the garbage and started to take the shopping cart out of the parking lot and off he went again, jogging with the shopping cart back to the KIWI store!! How many re red bishops will do that? Gerry and I shared a common interest in healthy way of cooking, we o8en talked about how we could live a healthy life and eat healthy food. I introduced them to a way of Japanese cooking and I think they enjoyed it, they both became a lot be$er at ea ng with chops cks and now they know what Bento is !

Fellowship Outline

Ingrid/Hakon

Ingrid and Hakon sent to council members before the mee ng a proposed dra8 "Fellowship Commi$ee" outline for 2015. In previous reports they had indicated that we would present a document outlining ac vi es in the ALC, and how the "Fellowship Commi$ee" could be developed. The purpose of the proposal is, in part, first to list some of the current, and in addi on, originally suggested Fellowship ac vi es; and then, secondly to invite all Council members to comment freely on whatever is wri$en and then get back to Hakon and Ingrid. They wanted to clarify what the Fellowship commi$ee is supposed to do. Ingrid especially pointed out that the Kitchen is in need of a lot of work. We need to find a be$er way to guide fellowship in the future. Perhaps rota ng responsibility by month is a good idea. Coordina on is the word

Plans and dreams Amalia Evaluate Dreams and Plans - Bob Sebro - posi ve toward Dreams and Plans. It has been very instrumental and very helpful. It is a good me for a new Pastor to par cipate Let the new Pastor be a part of the procedure. Do a general process and wait for the deeper process. Fire drill date Joshua We will do an abbreviated version, since it is winter. We must call the fire department and tell them that we are having a fire drill. The 18th of January seems to be the best date to have the fire drill. Towards Consistency, One Church one Profile Bob Bob met with Naja, where they discussed her ideas of se:ng up a plan for a project to develop a simple and effec ve visual profile for The ALC. Before the council mee ng Bob sent a presenta on that Naja had put together, which included an overview of the current status of how the ALC reaches out to its audiences through channels such as the bulle n, newsle$er, le$ers, email, website, flyers. Naja also suggested that we u lize 99Designs.com as our Design Partner. 99Designs.com is a marketplace for graphic design, including logo design, web design and other design contests. The cost would be around NOK 2999 for a Logo design contest to get proposals from designers around the world. ∗ Bjorn moved to Keep the Communica]on Commi[ee an Adhoc commi[ee, con]nuing through 2015 and repor]ng to the board of trustees and during the period of 2015 we will decide on their final placement – Stand alone or integrated commi[ee within an exis]ng council commi[ee. Mark Lanham seconded. The proposal was unanimously approved. 13
