Pastor’s Corner I am guessing the game of “Hide and Seek” is almost universal across the globe. Didn’t we all run to hide with our child-adrenalin pumping, so much that it was pretty hard to keep still when the one who was “it” and counting would say “Here I come, ready or not!!” We knew the one who was out to find us was coming!! No matter where we hid! I have heard of many who speak of Norway, an officially “Christian” country, as having become a society with few who make active participation in a faith community an important part of their lives. Statistically that’s true. But consider this: the God we know by knowing Jesus Christ is a God not content to wait for people to decide to approach God; rather, the sending of the Christ Child “to a people who live in deep darkness” (Isaiah 9:2) makes very clear God’s pursuit of all humankind is relentless. Even the people who have chosen to not think much about God. God thinks about them… not only thinks, but pursues. It’s like we’re on a life-long game of Hide and Seek, and God never stops seeking. This season will culminate in the celebration of Christmas, a time when many who may have seldom come to church may show up. To them, our worship - our prayer and proclamation and praise – becomes a sign of God’s very presence. Perhaps they come expecting a soft sentimental family time, and I hope they have that… but more… I hope they also glimpse a people assembled to thank God for being a daily, hourly, constant presence in our lives. And if that happens, perhaps the adrenalin of the Hide and Seek game of years ago will begin to pump again, and they may sense the pursuit of a God whose love for us knows no restraint. So we pray that in this season of “Advent” (i.e., “coming,”) not only will each of us who are part of the congregation sense God’s pursuit, but others will sense it as well! Peter Rogness

Information from the Call Committee We have read and continue to discuss the 11 applications that we have received. We have asked for and have received from many of the applicants a video (or weblink) of one of their most recent sermons. In respect to the process going forward, we will call selected candidates for interviews in the end of November - beginning December with a view to complete a majority of the interviews before Christmas and then to invite 2 candidates to Oslo for interviews in January. We hope we will be in a position to call a new pastor at the end of January or February 2015. Please continue to pray for us, the process, and the candidate whom God has already chosen for our church.

Thank you!

Interested in becoming a member of the ALC? A New Member Orientation will be held December 7 for those who are to be received as new members, a chance to meet some of the congregational leaders and learn of opportunities for involvement.

President’s Corner “But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people.” Luke 2, 10 The new church year is upon us and it is Advent season. I notice that Angels are widely used for decorations at this time of year, both in homes and in stores. It was the angel Gabriel who foretold the coming of Jesus, according to Luke. We do not know much about what the angels of the Bible look like or other details about them. Angel means messenger, and the focus is on the messages they bring, not on them. All the angel decorations can serve as reminders to pay attention to their messages from God. For the next four Sundays we prepare for, and have focus on celebrating the coming of Christ. It is a joy filled period with special Advent services. Our Sunday school children will have their traditional pageant on Sunday December 14th. I encourage all to come and watch as the children re-in act the Christmas story for us. That same evening our music leader Brad Staubes will once again lead the Yuletide Chorale. Bring along family and friends to this event, join in the singing of a variety of Christmas songs, both English and some Norwegian favorites. This promises to be a day filled with Christmas cheer. All the activities at the ALC are made possible through your involvement. It’s great to see that so many of you participate in and support our activities. The Christmas bazaar was a big success thanks to the many volunteers who worked before, during, and after. A big thank you goes out to all who planned and worked to arrange the bazaar. Home knit items, tasty baked goods and nice donated items for the raffle and our silent auction helped raise money for our Hanson Hall renovation project. Pastor Rogness led us in the ALC Thanksgiving Service for the first time, -and he now understands why we call it the pie service. He clarified how it is important for us to be thankful and to keep in mind that all gifts come from God. So thanks be to God for everyone who attended and brought pie for the fellowship afterwards. The call committee has reviewed applications and is now entering the process of interviewing applicants. I ask you to continue praying to support the search for our future pastor. Let all the angels you see during this Advent season be a reminder of what we are really preparing to celebrate: The coming of Christ! Soli Deo Gloria Bob Sebro ALC Council President

A Report from your Treasurer Good news! We have received nearly 150,000 kr. for our 50 th anniversary. This is enough to begin some needed projects in the church. On behalf of the 50 th Anniversary Committee, a big thank you for all your support so far. Fund raising for the 50 th Anniversary will continue also next year and the separate bank account for this purpose (7129.66.07775) will remain open for your contributions. Also another bit of good news is that we earned approximately 17,000 kr after expenses on the Bazaar which was held November 22nd-23rd. The Christmas Bazaar this year was a pure Christmas Bazaar, and did not include a rummage sale as we have had in previous years. We had a lottery and a silent auction, these activities combined took in over 7,000 kr. Other income came from the cafĂŠ, cake sales, book table, and those who sold Christmas articles. As we approach the end of the year offerings to the church are over 500,000 kr. under budget. After 11 months offerings are also nearly 200,000 kr. under what we received during the same period last year. Our financial situation is not by any means serious at the present time, however, if offerings do not improve, it will limit the number of services and activities we can offer in 2015. Please, therefore, keep the church in your prayers and give something extra to the church in December. Remember a gift to the church is a gift to God. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all Arthur Melhoos

ALC Women’s Fellowship Dear ladies, One more fellowship evening is planned for this year. This is coming up soon: On December 5th Trude Nergård who lives near Uranianborg church, has kindly offered to host us for a cozy time in front of a crackling fire, singing the Advent season in - an oasis of calm in a month that is packed with extra activities. And if – like me – you like to sing but don’t have a chance to get involved in the choir, here’s a wonderful opportunity to exercise your vocal chords. An email was sent out with further details about travel directions . If you haven’t received that please let the church office know. office@alcoslo.org

Women’s Gatherings for 2105 In addition, we are looking for ladies to host some of our evenings in 2015. The dates needing to be covered are:    

January 8 March 6 April 10 May 8

If you can offer your home and host a group of ladies, that would be very helpful. All it requires is that you make some tea/coffee and have some snacks available. We all pitch in and bring food, so there should not be long preparation time or much work for you. It always works out well. If you want to introduce the evening with a devotional, that is very welcome, but if not, someone else will step in, so you don't need to feel pressured in any way. Some of you, I know, have wonderful musical gifts, and if you would like to contribute with those in any way, you are most welcome! I trust the list will fill up soon and we can look forward to some meaningful and encouraging fellowship evenings together. With best wishes Ulrike Krallmann and Naja Boone Solend

Treasurers Report for September 2014  

   

Arthur Melhoos

In general the September accounts were better than in August, mainly due to lower expenses and higher income from offerings in comparison to August. Expenses were lower in September mainly because we did not pay the Pastorś salary in September given that his work and residence permit were not in order. Total expenses for the first 9 months of 2014 have been considerably lower than budget, due to the fact we have not had any large expenses for properties and also because expenses on many other accounts in general have been under budget, including heating expenses. The September accounts showed a net income of NOK 60,798 and for the first 9 months of 2014 a net income of approximately NOK 8,100. Offerings for September were NOK 109,600 compared to NOK 54,000 in August. Total offerings for the first 9 months of 2014 were NOK 729,226 compared to NOK 915,232 for the same period in 2013. Our offerings budget for the first 9 months of 2014 is NOK 1,200,000. We are currently about NOK 470,000 under budget for the year and we have received NOK 185,000 less than we did during the same 9 month period in 2013.. We note that a number of faithful members have moved away or have left the church. In September we received NOK 16,853 towards the 50th Anniversary Fund to approx. NOK 63,000. In October we have received additional funds for the 50th Anniversary such that we now have around NOK 105,000 in our designated bank account for this purpose. The Worship committee purchased 30 new hymnals; with shipping costs they cost NOK 230 each. We are asking people to donate in honor or in memory of someone. Contact Su Jung about this.

(continued)

The gift and challenge of diversity. It’s important that this be rehearsed again and again as a gift… It can sometimes bring frustrations. Much comes to focus on worship and musical forms, one area where people come from very different traditions. It is important to focus on relationships – people’s relationship with God, and relationships among members Hospitality. Hospitality was one of the “main things” mentioned at the congregational retreat. Hospitality is and will continue to be the life-blood of ALC as new people flow in. So here are some observations: Locked doors. - Security is a big issue here at the ALC but coming to church and finding the door locked, and having to get someone’s attention to open the door makes for a cold beginning. How about unlocking the door and stationing someone there from 10:30 to 11:00? In nice weather, consider propping the door open and having a greeter standing on the outside. It would really be helpful to have a rota of greeters to open the doors. The greeters can be whole families with children included as well as individuals Worship/sanctuary – Three of the four doors to the sanctuary are closed as people arrive. Why not prop them all open, and close them during the prelude. Open doors are a welcoming symbol. Finding Hanson Hall and Fellowship - Finding Hanson Hall can be a challenge. Viva has done a great job of connecting visitors with the way down the stairs and setting up a welcome table to talk further. Work Permit - Pastor Rogness is still waiting for the final approval of his work permit/resident visa.

Committee plans, discussions and feedback  

Christmas Bazaar Marielle Speakers in nursery Su-Jung/Olav  Veronica Ruth and her husband had donated speakers for the nursery. They appear to be broken. Peter Holby had set it up. Maybe Joshua can look into that. In addition we need Narthex, Kitchen, Hanson Hall. John chamberlain said it was just to turn on a switch.  Musical talent and choir Su-Jung/Olav  Choir – 2 Sundays a month there will be a group sing in parts  How do we encourage groups to sing? Maybe if we ask people during fellowship, we can find some more singers • Membership Approval Viva  Fundi Kayamba-Phiri was approved for membership  In connection with membership, it should be noted that two members have asked to withdraw their membership in the ALC. Pastor Rogness is going to talk with them.

Report from the AICEME Youth Conference By Wandile Zandi AICEME Youth Conference always offers unique experiences every year. This year was my second time and it was just amazing. Michael and I got a chance to meet old friends from last year and make new friends too. It was truly a blessing to have a good time with children of God from different nations. As always, I am the only one who is a South African, but when I go to the conference I am a Norwegian who does not speak nor understand Norwegian. This year’s conference was in Bonn, Germany from Thursday 6 th to Sunday 9th; where we learned about God and had fun from the first day till the last. Thursday the 6th was the day we had been waiting for a year and it had finally arrived. We had to wake up earlier than usual to catch our early flight. Just like last year, when I got to the airport, I had the biggest luggage than everyone else though I had brought a smaller luggage than last year. On our flight to Frankfurt, Jim Kilmer asked one of the flight attendant that how we get the train to Bonn from the Frankfurt airport. She answered that she was not sure as how would one get to the train, but that the trains were on strike that week. At this point Jim freaked out as well everyone else including me. Therefore Jim suggested that we pray for that matter and we prayed. 16

AICEME Conference (continued) When we got to Frankfurt, we waited for the train and the train arrived, although we had to run with our entire entire luggage to our cart. Our prayers had been answered. God is truly an amazing God. The train to Bonn was the fastest train I have ever been in my life. We were “flying” 280300 kilometers per hour on land. We were the first group to arrive in Bonn. Michael and I were going to sleep in a train, but this time, we weren't going to share the room with another group. The rooms this year were extremely smaller than last year's. We couldn't both stand at the same time in the room, only one person at a time. My luggage bag pretty much took a lot of space in the room. Whenever I had to take something out from it, I would have to take the luggage bag out of the room to the corridor to take something out. The first day was introducing each other, getting to know one another, trying to recap memories from last year’s conference and re-connecting with other groups. It's always hard for me the first time because I am shy to start a conversation especially when it’s my first time seeing those people or haven’t seen them in a long time. The group that I was comfortable with was from Zurich, Switzerland that I got to know more last year was going to arrive late. However, I got also got a chance to know better the group from Stockholm especially other three boys from Africa. Although I was still the only one from South Africa, I was no longer the only one from Africa. We would play football for a while before the sessions started or in between breaks. The Zurich group arrived very late on Thursday night. As soon as they arrived, we chatted and laughed in the middle of the night until there was a complaint that we were making noise since almost everyone was asleep. This year’s socializing improved a lot and I was starting settle well with everyone. Our first activity, that took place on Friday, was to be in groups and make a cross with anything we could find in the hostel. We used an outdoor umbrella and a broom and tied it with our name tags. It was one of the best I must say. We had to walk around and do everything with the cross of Jesus. Our second activity was treasure hunt activity although the weather wasn't on our side. It was raining, but that didn't stop us from going on with the activity. All the youth leaders had to hide all over the city by walking or sitting on a restaurant or running. Then we had to look for them in groups. That was the treasure hunt activity. Bonn is a small town but beautiful which is surrounded by great historical architecture and many restaurants. Finding youth leaders was not an easy job. We only succeeded in finding about seven out of sixteen. After the treasure hunt, we were given an opportunity to explore the beauty of Bonn. I learnt a lot from the sessions. Our first session talked about walking with the cross of Jesus Christ that walking with God is not always easy nor smoothly. Sometimes it is easy but sometimes it is hard, but no matter we need to always have our faith in God and trust in him even if it is not easy especially, in nowadays, being a Christian and a teenager you get judged by other teenagers who are non-believers or Atheist. The second session talked about choosing our friends wisely by asking ourselves if they have positive or negative impact in our lives. The third session talked about having goals in your life and doing impressive things that will be always honored. But in order to do that, we would have to put God first. 17

AICEME Conference (continued from page 17) Every evening we had blessing praise and worship before sessions. The best one, that took place on Friday evening, uplifted me. My soul felt so blessed that I ended up going to the front and joined the band. I sang and danced to the African songs with the band. I felt like I was back at home. My heart was just warmed up. On Saturday afternoon we went on hiking up a very steep hill. When we got to the hill, we were sweating so much but it was worth it. The view of Bonn from top was breathtaking. Saturday’s evening was fantastic. After all the praise and worships and sessions, everyone was just socializing and playing games especially cards until music started playing. Some people started dancing and I went to join. Within ten minutes, everyone was on the dance floor. As an African, I went all way out. I was on the middle of the circle dancing. I got other people to dance with me too. I was dancing, screaming and sweating for three hours. Jim later on joined us and showed us some good dance moves. Now everyone was dancing. We definitely had a good time. I could not believe myself. We might have been one of the smallest groups but we surely left a huge mark at the conference and became famous. Afterwards my feet were swollen and my voice was gone. Through dancing I got to know most of the people at the conference. I felt so blessed. The last day was very heartbreaking since it was time for goodbyes and going back home to reality. It is never easy to say goodbye after having a marvelous time. On our way back, Jim and I kept on singing gospel songs and dancing to a point that Michael would pretend that he did not know us. I really had wonderful time in Bonn, with everyone. The only sorrowful part of it is saying goodbye. I guess there is nothing “good” in goodbye. I can’t wait for next year. I would like to give thanks to ALC and everyone else for your prayers, your donations on the movie night and the anonymous donator on behalf of the youth group. But last but not least I would like to thank father God the almighty who made this happen. Thanks Wandile for writing this very interesting report!
