April 2015

Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; but I tell you, not even Solomon in all his glory clothed himself like one of these. But if God so clothes the grass in the field, which is alive today and tomorrow is thrown into the furnace, how much more will He clothe you? Luke 12:27-28 The mission of the American Lutheran Congregation is to bring people of different nations and denominations together, and in the English language, empower them into becoming fully devoted followers of Jesus Christ. 1

Pastor’s Corner

Well, it has been about two months that I have been with American Lutheran Congregation in Oslo (ALC). Again, I am grateful and humbled that God chose me to lead this congregation during this transitional time. God is not only the “God of the beginning and the end,” but He is the God of the in between too. He has something special for ALC at this time. We must seek God in prayer for direction. My goal while interim pastor is to prepare for the arrival of the new pastor. When you are trusted with someone else’s house, my mom says, “You should leave it in better condition than you found it.” We must, like Nehemiah, honestly assess our current situation and take our requests and cares to King Jesus in prayer. If we follow Nehemiah’s example, we see that he . . . Asked for what he needed. Matthew 7:7 says “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. In Nehemiah 2:1-8, he asks for and receives the time he needed to travel and restore the city of Jerusalem. Like Nehemiah, we must ask God what we need to fulfill the plans He has for ALC. Asked for secure travel. Nehemiah asked for letters to the governors of the provinces that he would have to pass through to provide safe passage for him. The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord (Psalm 37:23). We need God to be a light unto our path as he guides us during this transition. We need His favor to keep us safe as we explore new ground. Asked for authority and power to make the needed changes. Nehemiah asked for letters to the governors that he would be granted military power and authority to advance forward in rebuilding the walls of the city and the temple. We, as church council and leaders need to move forward in rebuilding the areas of the church that are in need of restoration.

Asked for the special supplies that only the king could authorize. Ask God to supply what we will need financially and spiritually. We must be good stewards over what God has already blessed us with, and position our self to grow. With this in mind, I’ve come up with a priority list for myself that will allow us to address the needs and solidify our walls. Connect with the leaders and congregation – Anytime there is a change in leadership as significant as losing a Pastor there can be gaps. Here are areas I will focus the short time I am here. Building trust by hearing the congregation and leadership (survey, meetings, etc.) Mobilizing volunteers Increasing stewardship Snapshot and assessment of church – Let’s stop and take a picture of where we are. Providing the congregation with a survey that assesses different pillars of the church will give the leadership and next pastor insight to the life of the Body of Christ here at ALC. It is important that we  Address areas that we can improve to meet the needs of our international and ecumenical church.  Acknowledge our strong areas.  Increase the knowledge of our members around the bylaws, constitution, etc. in order to increase participation and volunteerism. We have work ahead of us ALC. The best is yet to come. God is still on the throne. He is still performing miracles. Let’s walk in the love and power of Christ, seeking his plans and purpose for this Season. To God be the glory for the great things that will be done!!!!! In Christ, Pastor Alicia Partee

President’s Corner April 2015 CHRIST HAS RISEN - HE HAS RISEN INDEED! Our journey through Lent fed us both physically and spiritually. Following some tasty soup suppers, Pastor Alicia led us through a series of reflections and discussions over Christ suffering and giving up his life for our salvation. I want to thank all who contributed to the Lenten gatherings this year! Moist weather kept us from having the Palm Sunday processional outside. The Sunday school children had made festive paper palm branches which set the tone for our indoor processional. Maundy Thursday Pastor Alicia held a special contemplative service with foot washing, communion, and stripping of the altar. St. Edmund’s was host to the well-attended Good Friday service. Easter Sunday is a special day for us. My first visit to the ALC was at on Easter Sunday in 1986. I came with Torill and our two young daughters. We missed our Lutheran church back in Colorado, and had been looking for a place in Oslo to worship in English. The ALC was very full that Sunday, but we found room for the four of us behind another family with several older children. At the end of the service the woman in front of us turned and gave us a very friendly greeting and handed Torill a loaf of home-made bread wrapped in tin foil. It was many visits later before we learnt that this warm and generous person was Yolanda Solholm. This Easter Sunday her beloved husband Rolleiv shared the news with us that Yolanda has left this world to be with the Lord. Please keep the Solholm family in your prayers. Yolanda was one of our charter members, and an example to follow: “,let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matt 5:16 Looking ahead to the month of April; the women of the ALC will be holding their monthly get together Saturday morning April 18th from 9 to 10:30 am. Back by popular demand with be the 2nd annual Pancake breakfast on April 25 from 8 to 11 am. We will be serving buttermilk pancakes and homemade American breakfast sausage. We had a great turn out last year and are expecting many more this year. Please come and invite your friends. On May 5 we will have our spring “Dreams and Plans” evening. This is your opportunity to be involved in the ALC discussion making. Here we will meet with committee chairman and committee members that are interested in your ideas and thoughts. We will start off with a short discussion about the Constitution and Bylaws. Soli Deo Gloria Bob Sebro ALC Council President 5

Yolanda Solholm January 6. 1935 - April 2. 2015 Our dear sister in Christ Yolanda Solholm was led home to be with the Lord on Maundy Thursday. Yolanda was an active member of the group that founded the ALC. In 1958 she and Rolleiv travelled across the Atlantic, coming from Toronto Canada, by “Norwegian American Line’s” steamer Bergensfjord. ELCA Pastor Oscar C. Hanson and his family also came to Norway by this ship, and in October 1958 the Solholms joined Pastor Hanson and a group of about 200 people with close ties to America, when they established the American Lutheran Congregation in Oslo. Job related assignments in Africa with “Radio Voice of the Gospel” meant that Rolleiv, Yolanda, and their children were away from the ALC for extended periods of time. However they expressed in the ALC 50th anniversary book; “we felt strongly that our church home was at Fritznersgate 15!” And; “the ALC has provided our own growing family with a spiritual home, a prayer fellowship as well as a network of Christian friends we could rely on.” The Solholm family lived one year in the old building which stood on the property where our church building now stands. Over more than 50 years Yolanda and her family have given generously of their time, talents, and resources to the ALC. The Solholm’s oldest daughter, Mildred, was one of the first babies in the new congregation. Their children have been baptized here, have gone to Sunday school, and have been in youth groups. We have prayed with them and supported their youngest daughter, Ynghild, doing her challenging missionary work in Zimbabwe. While Rolleiv took turns in ALC council leadership roles, Yolanda helped support and build prayer and teaching ministries for families, women, and children. During her long illness we have greatly missed Yolanda’s warm and caring presence at church. We are so thankful to God for the life of Yolanda, our sister in Christ; our heartfelt prayers go out to Rolleiv and the Solholm family. The funeral service will be held at Asker Kapell , Friday April 17th at 10:00 AM.

VOLUNTEER DRIVERS WANTED Hi ALC family! We thank God that members come from far and near to worship, fellowship and serve God together. Unfortunately, for some members it is a struggle to make it to church. As a result, they end up not coming at all. In 2015 and beyond we want to change that and here's how you can help. We would like to develop a roster of volunteer drivers who would be willing to transport members (particularly older members) living within your commune possibly to and from church service and/or to and from church-related functions. Please get in touch with Viva Combs Thorsen of the Membership Committee (vivacombs@yahoo.com) or Ingrid Fossland of the Fellowship Committee (ingridfossland@hotmail.com). 8

Call for Sunday School Teachers We need both Men and Women!

We are in need of additional teachers. Volunteering to teach is rewarding and a blessing. This is truly to touch the life of a child. We are especially interesting in getting some of our men to teach. We need male role models to teach the gospel to our children and set good examples for them. Prior experience is not required; just a heart for children and a desire to share God’s Word with children. We provide interesting and easy to use teachers’ guides and material. Please keep in mind that men make good Sunday School teachers young boys need to see that Sunday School is not just for girls. Please consider this prayerfully and if you feel called to volunteer please contact: Mable Killmer at mabki@online.no or telephone number 480 43 483.

Remember April 25th!! AMERICAN PANCAKE BREAKFAST ! 17

Dear Friends, ALC Oslo is home to a wonderful representation of people from many different nations, gathered around the One who shapes us into one body. This diversity is such a blessing, and one of its very enjoyable facets can be seen in our potluck events: they always are culinary adventures with food ranging from the familiar to the exotic. So maybe it is time for another collection of recipes to capture this variety of cooking styles and use of ingredients. Many of us have lived in different parts of the world and brought back recipes that have become firm family favourites, others have adapted their national dishes to the ingredients available here. Such tried and trusted recipes are sure to work and certainly worth sharing. We would like to have the book ready by September/October, so when folk start thinking about Christmas presents for friends and family, this book would hopefully be high on their priority list. Because any proceeds of the book are intended for the Fellowship fund. While we research the most cost effective ways of producing and publishing such a cook book, we want to enlist your help: Maybe you would like to help with the production of the book. Are you good with computers or design? Do you have a way with words and would like to help me edit the recipes? If you want to give some of your expertise into the project, please contact Ulrike Krallmann via the church office. We would love you to share your recipes with us. Food always is an expression of culture as well, so if you can give a little background to each recipe, that would be wonderful. But if not, please don’t let that stop you! To get you thinking about which recipes to pass on to us, here are some categories to slot your contributions into (We are happy to receive more than one recipe from you)  Appetizers and Snacks - Soups  Salads and vegetable dishes—Main meals (meat, fish, vegetarian)  Desserts - Baking— Feeding a crowd It’s probably easiest for us if you follow a format when writing down your recipe (formatted sheets will be available by email):  Name of the dish (and category) - Feeds x number of people  Ingredients: try and be specific with measurements  Method  Cooking /baking time, oven temperature etc.  A sentence or two about the background of the dish (f.e. this is a recipe

handed down from my great-grandmother ) So please start sending me your recipes and let’s try to get around the world in 80 dishes or more. -Ulrike 18
