EXECUTIVE UPDATES PRESIDENT REPORT Willem Vanderlinde

Coming towards the end of the year, I hope everyone’s fall was good. We had a good show in Red Deer, seems like the quality of the show gets better every year. Alberta Holstein presented best bred and owned awards, congratulations to the organizers and all the winners.

One of the highlights of the Royal 2018 was Don Chalack winning the Curtis Clark Award.

Congratulations, very well deserved!

I encourage everyone to look online or at the Alberta Holstein Store booth at different events.

It will make for good Christmas presents.

Next up I’m looking forward to attending clubs awards nights. It is always good connecting with all members. The week of January 21-25 is the AGM of the 5 Albertan clubs. I hope to see you there.

I would like to thank Orville Schmidt for his work as national director. Also I would like to thank all board members for making me look good as president and helping me promote the Alberta Holstein Association. Thank you to our staff Benita Hummel and Amanda Hehli for there commitment to Alberta Holstein Association.

This fall we lost one of our fellow breeders, he was also one of my best friends. You never know what the future holds, so give your loved ones a hug. We often forget or are too busy to appreciate what we have.

NATIONAL DIRECTOR REPORT Orville Schmidt

As we enter into the winter season many dairy producers are still thinking about the recent trade deal with Mexico and the USA that was not what dairy wanted. Changes to Class 7 and increased access to our market are two of the major concessions that did not help the Canadian producer. However now it is time to look at the positives we still have. Supply management is still in place and we as dairy industry people need to put our “marketing hats” on and start to sell the “Canadian Made” advantage. Consumers need to be educated in Canadian quality, food security, animal care and the Canadian traceability program. They will then understand that cheap is not always the best way to buy your food.

As our industry changes so does Holstein Canada. The new facts of our industry are evident. Less herds, larger herds, more focus on efficiency, less herds involved in supplying breeding stock, more focus on genetic information at an earlier age and an increased need for data verification to identify the most profitable animals in any given herd based on that herds focus. Our updated services will help members achieve their goals. Registration will verify parentage and begin the traceability program. Classification will provide and verify conformation data and take care of the proAction component. Genetic programs will help members identify the positives and

negatives in their own herds and be able to access their herd information electronically on demand. We will also work with our industry partners to increase efficiencies in the industry and avoid duplications of programs no matter what dairy breed members work with.

Also breed promotion both domestically and internationally will always be important to our association. Continuing to identify our elite members and cows with our award programs and to develop new awards for our “21st Century Cow” will always be an important aspect of member relations.

Look at the positives of our great industry and continue to move ahead in your herd as the one constant still remains, people will always need food.

Canada once again well represented at 2018 EYBS Brantford, ON – For the past several years, Holstein Canada has teamed up with the provincial Holstein branches to send a team of young enthusiasts to Battice, Belgium, to compete at the European Young Breeders School (EYBS). This international dairy event assembles over 120 youth from 12 different countries in Europe as well as Canada. This year’s team Canada was composed of Teresa Hylkema (Sask.), Connor Halpenny (Ont.), Rebecca Redner (Ont.), Bobby Tolhurst (Que.), Martha MacKinnon (Que.) and Cynthia Campbell (N.S).

Team Canada had a strong team once again this year, with all the delegates finishing in the top five of their respective heats in showmanship. Furthermore, Connor Halpenny finished 8th overall, and in the overall top 10 in showmanship. Cynthia Campbell also had notable results, finishing second in her heat and in the final six for showmanship. She finished 33rd overall. Rebecca Redner finished 22nd overall, Martha MacKinnon was 25th overall, Bobby Tolhurst was 38th, and Teresa Hylkema was 42nd.

The Canadian delegates took part in the five-day event with numerous workshops, activities and competitions. The delegates at EYBS compete for top honors in fitting, judging, showmanship and conformation competitions. Each team was also judged on participation, display and team work.

Holstein Canada has been partnering with the provincial branches for the past five years to send six delegates from across the country. Delegates are chosen from their respective provinces by winning provincial competitions and/or successfully completing an interview process.

A hands-on interactive event, EYBS falls under the “Practical Leaning Opportunities” pillar of the Holstein Canada Young Leader Program, with the added bonus of the international travel component. Young Leaders interested in becoming members of the future EYBS team are encouraged to contact their provincial Holstein Branch for more information, or visit the Holstein.ca website!

**WCC 2019** The Alberta Western Canadian Classic (WCC) Committee is pleased to announce that they will be hosting the 35th edition of Western Canada’s premier junior dairy show. This successful program is open to youth from the four western provinces and will be held in Olds, AB from August 19-24, 2019.

This program offers over 100 Western Canadian youth, between the ages of 12-21, the opportunity to take part in a program filled with many fun activities throughout the week as well as cattle clipping, dairy science test, cattle judging & oral reasons, herdsmanship & stall decorations, showmanship and conformation competitions.

The purpose of this competition is to provide an opportunity for our youth to improve their skills in leadership, teamwork, citizenship, public speaking and dairy cattle husbandry. During this event, participants will have the opportunity to build and grow their network while stimulating and maintaining interest in the agricultural industry. This remarkable program provides an opportunity for agribusinesses to participate in the development of youth for a great future in agriculture.

As 2018 host province, our Alberta volunteer committee is set to raise $70,000 of cash and in-kind contributions from agribusinesses and dairy producers to fund this year’s event. In return for sponsorship, you will receive recognition through online and in-print advertising, signage and special mentions throughout the show as well as awards banquet tickets and other benefits.

MOOS ON THE MOO-VE 4-H Report- Jantiena Hoeve

Another year has begun for the Moos on the Moo-ve 4-H Dairy club. This year we have a total of 11 members with 3 juniors, 2 intermediates and 6 seniors. Our first meeting was held on Oct. 27th at Bikker’s where we talked about the past year as well as the upcoming year and elected our positions. This year’s president is Rolynn Bikker, and Vice

president is Kyle Vandijk. Our treasurer is Gelsey Bikker and our Club Reporters are Marina, Jantiena & Christiena Hoeve. We elected Emma to be our secretary and our historians are Micah and Naomi Rottier and Wyatt and Hannah Baas. We are all looking forward to what the rest of this year holds for us, and we are excited to learn new things and create new friendships.

AWARDS REPORT Lee Simanton Another year has come and gone since our last Curtis Clark award was given out at The Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. This year it is with great pleasure and pride that the Curtis Clark Award was Awarded to a Albertan, who has been so influential, in breeding, judging and teaching his knowledge of dairy cattle in Western Canada as well as all over the world.

Don Chalack and his family at Wendon Holsteins have had great success for many, many years showing cattle across North America. The awards this farm has won and the type of cattle they have bred are second to none. Don has always been an active member locally and provincially, taking countless hours to help young 4-H members learn and supplied countless animals to junior show participants. His love for cattle is contagious, Don pays attention to detail, and his respect for the industry is noticed by all. Curtis Clark was a very respected dairyman, and this years recipient fits that statement 100%.

We had our booth out at the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer, it was not that busy because it was finally great harvest weather! We were at the Alberta Milk conference in Calgary from Nov. 20-22. Please stop by and grab a calendar and check out what is available from the Alberta Holstein store whenever the booth is up. We debuted the Alberta Holstein deck of cards at the Picnic in July and they were a hit, contact a board member if you’re interested in getting a deck! Linsey Whalen is the customer support rep in Alberta and will have an inventory of items avaiable at her location in Millet, AB.
