PRESIDENT REPORT
Tim Hummel
Dear Alberta Holstein Association Members, Happy Summer!
It has been a busy spring in our province with many activities which have been a great way to connect with fellow breeders. Following I will highlight the events which have already taken place.
In May, the Green Acres Holstein Club had their open show combined with the 4-H Club. A great day was had by all! Congratulations to all the participants and a huge thanks to the organizers.
Just a few short weeks ago, breeders were once again able to gather at the Dairy Congress in Rimbey. It was a great week and Alberta should be proud of the quality of the Holstein cattle bred in our province. A judging school was also held in conjunction with the Dairy Congress where a great number of judges and youth participated.
Next up is the Alberta Youth Dairy Show in July in
Rimbey. We are looking forward to a couple of days of good cattle, great showmanship and lots of fun.
Classifiers have once again been around Alberta. Thank you to the team at Holstein Canada for engaging our membership in several classifier nights through out the province and taking the time to teach the youth about the many different aspects of a Holstein.
We are looking forward to the rest of the show season and we hope to see many of you at the activities planned throughout the province. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact anyone on the Board and we will do our best to help.

2023 National Holstein Convention: A “Legendary Experience” for Holstein Enthusiasts
Brantford (Ont.), April 17, 2023 – Holstein enthusiasts and members of the Dairy Industry from across the Country gathered in Montreal from April 12 to 15 for the Holstein Canada National Convention. A number of activities were organized in the metropolitan area, including the 140th Annual General Meeting and the 2022 Master Breeder Gala. Several farm visits and a wide range of activities were held, with a "Legendary Experience" theme. The event’s success is thanks to the Organizing Committee’s hard work; the Committee is composed of volunteers and chaired by Louis St-Aubin.
2023 Annual General Meeting
Holstein Canada's 140th Annual General Meeting was held last Saturday during the 2022 National Convention in Montreal. The hybrid format allowed members onsite, and from across the Country, to gather and discuss various agenda items. President Ben Cuthbert and Interim Chief Executive Officer Linda Markle addressed the membership, highlighting Holstein Canada's progress and major achievements in 2022. The members of the Association voted to adopt eight (8) proposed resolutions. Similar to last year, videos were shown to provide details on the Financial Report as well as updates on the various Committees. These videos will be available on the Holstein Canada website. The next Annual General Meeting of the Association will be held in Hamilton, Ontario on April 27, 2024.
Following the meeting, the Board of Directors re-elected Ben Cuthbert (Silvermaple) of Ladysmith, BC as President for the 2023-2024 year. President Cuthbert will be joined by an Executive consisting of Vice- President and Chair, Angus Mackinnon (Buckland) of Coaticook, QC and 3rd Member to the Executive Doug Peart (Peartome) of Hagersville, ON.
The 2022 Cow of the Year was announced at the meeting. Comestar Lamadona Doorman EX-94-2E 22* was selected! Each member had one vote to elect this magnificent cow from the Centre-du-Québec region. The Comtois family was onsite to receive the crowd’s applause as well as their prize: a personalized canvas with the winner’s colours. Thank you to the artist, Laurie Desrochers of Princeville, QC, who reproduced the Cow of the Year with remarkable accuracy.
Several awards were presented at the meeting. Three Ontario families received the Century of Holstein Award, celebrating 100 years of continuous membership in Holstein Canada: the McGriskin family of Agincourt, the Dolson family of Atwood and the Poole/Hunter family of Smith Falls. All three families were onsite to receive their awards.
Farm Tours, Quebec Spring Show, and Other Activities
More than 600 people participated in this week full of activities! Eleven businesses welcomed delegates and Young Leaders by showcasing their operations during farm tours. An alternative tour to discover the legendary attractions of Montreal was also offered.
At the Quebec Spring Show held in Victoriaville, more than 250 Holsteins captured everyone's attention. Judge Mike Duckett of Rudolph, Wisconsin crowned Jacobs Lambda

The Connexxion app is proving to be popular as we have seen close to 2000 downloads and lots of registrations and genomic submissions coming in via mobile app.
*To remember: When using the App, especially through third party (e.g. Lactanet) it will take a few days before the registration is submitted and approved. Once approved, the registration will show up on the App; then you could apply for genomics!*
NLID updates: Tag Transitions for proAction is happening September 1st!! This means producers are required to use white tags for all animals on farm – dual tag set for dairy animals and single button white tags for all non-dairy calves (beef crosses or Holstein bull calves). Therefore, no more yellow tags, even for cull cows who lost their tags.
You may have heard of the Mail project at HC? Currently, 83% of our clients have web accounts and 18% using an e-docs –we want to grow that by 10% by the end of the year. The communication started in May with eblasts and posts on our social networks to invite members to review their preferences.
In June, the fee announcement will come with the benefits of going paperless. Our focus is on education / tutorials – how to set and use document preferences, where documents are in producer web accounts. For those who do not use internet, a reasonable mailing option is available. Also note that awards are not included in mail charge.

cow that has a tremendous mammary system, along with great bone quality in her feet and legs, depth of body capacity, spring of rib, and style,” says Don. “We have always used high conformation bulls, either proven or genomic. You have to use those kinds of bulls to get those elite show cows.”
The Wendon gang loves to show, particularly show cows, and can always be counted on for a string at the major Western Canada shows. In the last 15 years, they have also had a few cows win classes at the Royal Winter Fair and World Dairy Expo. Their success in the showring has brought them a host of champion rosettes, Breeder’s Herd victories, Premier Breeder and Exhibitor banners, and All-Canadian, All-American and All-Western awards.
One of Canada’s most respected herds, Wendon Holsteins of Red Deer County, AB, has earned its third Holstein Canada Master Breeder shield for Don and Wendy Chalack and family. A herd known for its strong cow families, exceptional type, and homebred show winners, they are Alberta’s first 3X Master Breeder winner, having won awards now in 1995, 2008 and 2022.
Immense Progress
Holsteins have always been a part of Don Chalack’s life. An astute cowman with a keen eye, he grew up on the Ultra Holsteins’ farm of his parents, Sam and Margaret Chalack, Cochrane, AB. Don and Wendy bought their own 160-acre farm near Innisfail in 1976 and established Wendon Holsteins. “We had one cow, one old car and a run-down farm. It was very tough when we started. We struggled a lot of times. So the progress we have made over the years with the development of our farm, herd and family is something I am really proud of,” says Don.
From those meager beginnings, Wendon has grown to a 1000-acre farm where they grow hay and barley for silage, plus canola and wheat for cash crops. In 2015, the dairy herd moved from a tie-stall barn to a 60cow free-stall barn with one Lely robot and 12 tie-stalls for show cows for labour savings, cow comfort and the ability to expand. The centrepiece of the farm is the impressive Wendon herd which currently includes 11 Multiple EX, 36 EX, 44 VG and four GP cows and averages 11,879 kg milk, 451 kg fat, 375 kg protein in 305 days for production. Wendon has bred well over 110 Excellent cows and 60 Star Brood cows since it began. Of note is breeding ten 95-point cows!!
Don and Wendy’s three children were all actively involved in the farm, showing and 4-H while growing up. The couple operates this attractive dairy operation
today with their youngest daughter Jillian and her husband Scott Hastie, along with the assistance of herdsman Egbert Korenberg. Also supporting them is oldest daughter Linsey and six grandchildren. The Chalacks’ son, Logan, a talented young cowman who sadly died from cancer at just 32 years of age in 2016, played a big part in the winning of this third Shield.
“Logan, along with Scott and now Egbert,
did a lot of the sire selection, breeding decisions and development of the show cows that contributed animals and points to this latest Master Breeder shield. It is bittersweet that Logan is not able to share in this award with us,” says Don.
Show Winning Cow Families
“Breeding good cow families to the top conformation bulls” has always been the aim at Wendon. “We like that total balanced
“We really strive to either win Premier Breeder at a show or try and exhibit mostly homebred animals,” says Don. Indicative of this are the Premier Breeder banners they won at the National Convention Shows in 2022 and 2016 and the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer in 2022-21-20, and the five Wendon Breeder’s Herds that have been nominated for All-Canadian resulting in four Honourable Mention awards in 201918-17-16.
Over the years, a number of cow families have left their mark at Wendon like WENDON ATTRACT RENA VG-86-4* and her three EX Starbuck daughters, and WESTPRIDE PETULA B EX-9*. Contributing the majority of points for this latest Master Breeder win are two cows sired by Renaissance Triumphant – WENDON TRIUMPH DIVINE EX-94-4E-19* and WENDON TRIUMP ALASKA EX-91-2E-9*.
Divine, a two-time All-Western Mature Cow nominee, made over 94,000 kg milk lifetime and had 10 EX (two at 95 points and two 6E) and seven VG daughters. Her granddaughter, WENDON GOLDWYN DIODE EX-96-3E, was Wendon’s first 96-point cow in 2017. Diode earned Honourable Mention All-Canadian awards for Mature Cow in 2017 and Longtime Production in 2018 and was Grand Champion at both BC and Calgary Spring Shows in 2017 and Westerner Dairy Showcase in 2018.
Alaska had five EX daughters. Four were sired by Goldwyn and three of them classified 95 points – Allie, Aloha and Alberta. The oldest, WENDON GOLDWYN ALLIE EX-95-2E-3*, was All-Canadian and All-American 5-Year-Old in 2012 after winning her class at the Royal and World Dairy Expo for Ferme Laitiere Rayon d’Or Inc. of Quebec. Alaska’s now 10-year-old daughter, WENDON GOLDWYN ALBERTA EX-95, was Honourable Mention AllCanadian Mature Cow in 2019 after being Grand Champion at Westerner Dairy Showcase and third at the Royal. “One of our biggest show highlights was winning the Champion Bred & Owned Award at the

Royal with Alberta in 2019,” says Don. A daughter of Alberta, WENDON SOLOMON ALBY VG-89-3YR, was first 4-year-old and Champion Bred and Owned cow at the recent BC Spring Show. Alberta also has a VG-87-3yr Byway and a promising Delta-Lambda heifer.
Another family that has generated show winning descendants is WENDON GIBSON PRUDENCE EX-92-5E-9*. Her granddaughter, WENDON DEMPSEY PRUDE EX-95-2E-1* was All-Canadian and All-American 4-Year-Old in 2016 for Westcoast Holsteins, Chilliwack, BC, after being Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo and Grand Champion at BC Spring Show and the National Convention Show.
Goldwyn has had a huge impact on the Wendon breeding program in recent years, followed by Doorman and now Unix. Windbrook also left some fancy daughters, a couple of whom earned showring accolades after Don and partners Bienert, Dardel and Southrise Holsteins marketed them to other owners. WENDON WINDBROOK MERCY EX-93-USA was All-American Junior 2-Year-Old in 2015, while her younger full sister, WENDON BSD WINDBROOK MERRY EX-95, topped the 2022 Pierstein Sale in Quebec at $300,000 to Jim Butler of Illinois and was nominated for All-Canadian and AllAmerican 5-Year-Old last year. There is
an EX-91 5-year-old Solomon sister to this pair still at Wendon. They are daughters of TOLAMIKA GOLDWYN MERCEDES EX-942E-2*, the 2016 Westerner Dairy Showcase Grand Champion who traces through five generations of Wendon bred dams including WENDON SKY FAME MIRA VG89-2*, 2003 Reserve All-Canadian Senior Yearling.
Red & White Holsteins
Red & White Holsteins have had a long history at Wendon. “Logan was only 5 years old when he caught the R&W bug and kept asking us if we could buy a R&W calf,” recalls Don. “That’s when we bought DEWITTS DEBBIE VG-85-7* in 1990. At one time, she was the second highest producing R&W cow in the World for lifetime milk production at 159,146 kg. All our Reds traced back to her at one point.” While Red numbers later diminished, they are back stronger than ever with 15 true R&Ws in the herd presently. “We are concentrating quite a bit again on Reds and even using some proven and genomic R&W bulls on some of our B&W cows because the Red market is so strong right now,” says Don. SHANALTA UNSTOPABULL REANNA VG-89-3YR, a R&W that Don bought as a calf in 2019 and then sold last summer, was Reserve All-Canadian B&W Senior 3-Year-Old in 2022 after placing second in class in the B&W Holstein show at the Royal to the eventual Grand Champion,
BLONDIN RD UNSTOPABULL MAPLE. Don has a January 2021 R&W Diamondback heifer from Reanna still in the herd.
Marketing and Giving Back
Wendon has marketed cattle and embryos to many foreign and domestic buyers privately, as well as through consignment sales and their own production sales. The farm has hosted Tag Sales in 2019 and 2021 in conjunction with Westerner Dairy Showcase and is planning for a third Tag Sale again this October. “While we sell mainly heifers in our Tag Sales,” comments Don, “in general we usually calve everything out and then make our decisions about which ones to sell. We have quite a strong market for fresh cows and heifers. We still sell some breeding age bulls for natural service to local dairies and Hutterite colonies. We also do a lot of flushing and have sold quite a few embryos to England, Scotland, Japan, Colombia and other countries.”
Don has always been very involved in the Holstein industry. He has been on the Westerner Dairy Showcase Committee since 1976 and Chairman of that show for more than a decade as it has grown and become the best show in Western Canada. He was one of the founders of the Western Canadian Classic (WCC), a President and Director of the Alberta Holstein Branch, Chairman of Holstein Canada’s Type Classification Advisory Committee, and
Thoughts of Logan Chalack, a talented young cowman who died in 2016, are never far from mind for the Chalack family at Wendon Holsteins, where Logan played a vital part in the breeding, development and showing of this respected Alberta herd.
Judges, as was Logan. Don was honoured with the Curtis Clark Achievement Award in 2018 and the Marj Atkins Achievement Award in 2019. As a family farm, Wendon Holsteins has won the Alberta Breeder of the Year Award twice (2004 and 2018), the McKown Master Breeder Award at World Dairy Expo in 2017 and been the Breeder of Distinction at the 2018 TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic.
Master Breeders run in the Chalack blood. Don’s father, Sam, achieved a Master Breeder shield in 1984, and his brother, Dr. David Chalack, was a partner in the Master Breeder RockyMountain Holsteins herd in 2021.
Don and Wendy Chalack credit “dedication, passion, strong family commitment and day-to-day hard work” for their continued success at Wendon Holsteins. A quiet, modest family, they have let the breeding of great Holstein cows with deep pedigrees and show winning type speak for itself at
Wendon.
WENDON GOLDWYN
DIODE EX-96-3E, twotime Honourable Mention All-Canadian and Grand Champion at several Western Canada shows, was Wendon Holsteins’ first EX96 cow and completes seven generations EX/VG in their Divine family.

Throughout the week, I explored Montreal, went on farm tours, and took part in workshops from various speakers. I gained knowledge on transition planning and improving pregnancy rates. I also got ideas for a new barn in the future. I made new friends and reconnected with old ones. All in all, it was an experience I will never forget. I would like to thank the Alberta Holstein Association and Holstein Canada for allowing me to attend this year’s convention!”---- Emma
