A Moroccan House in Riyadh
A New Approach to Moroccan Architecture
Islamic Architecture with its Moroccan style represents a major component in the architectural development in the kingdom, and especially in Riyadh, both in religious and residential projects. This style provides designers with enough tools to create architectural elements that are suitable for the local culture, and environment. A design firm was commissioned to redesign an un-completed residential villa with a Moroccan Touches. Double skin solution was adopted to balance the masses on the facade, and create the required Architectural elements, using only material locally available. Respecting the theme of the architecture, the Designer created the Interior of the villa by using elements in different locations and shapes from the library of the Moroccan style. The ground floor captured most of these elements at the entrances as well as the main areas of the house. Going to the first floor thru a Grand Stair, the Designer continued with the same theme but a bit lighter emphasizing on creating an environment of warmth, and privacy while responding to the requirements, and the wishes of every member of the house. The concept of the basement was to create vertical decorative elements of the same style, to provide the tenants the feeling of larger space with higher ceiling. Adapting the Moroccan style to this project has helped the designer to incorporate the lighting effect in the design to create shades and shadows feeling that can alter dramatically between day and night time on the facades as well as in the interior.
