Welcome to Costessey Sports Ten amazing years! For some of you it will be your first Costessey Tournament, whilst others will have marked our event in their football calendar and may be serial attendees! For the club this year marks an important milestone of a decade of tournaments and we believe that ours is the best, we hope you agree.

Our tournament is always an enjoyable event but you might not realise that it is now an essential part of the club’s fundraising to help support the twenty five or so youth, ladies and adult teams, through purchase of equipment, funding of training courses, DBS checks etc.

This season has been an especially rewarding and succesful year for our club with an unprecidented number of teams performing well in their league and progressing through to semis and finals. This is a great achievement for all of the players but would not be possible without the infrastructure of our great club and the dedication of the coaches and helpers.

So, on behalf of Costessey Sports Club, I would also like to extend our thanks to all sponsors and advertisers for their support for our event, the referees and the additional volunteers for their time and Costessey Town Council (in particular Barry and Steve, the groundsmen) for the amazing pitches and facilities which all help to make this a successful event.

To everyone who attends I wish that you have an enjoyable time whether you are playing, managing or supporting your team. Hopefully the weather is kind to us, and we look forward to welcoming you back next year!

Costessey Sports Summer Tournament 2019 Rules We strongly recommend that all players wear trainers unless inclement weather dictates that blades and studded boots would be more appropriate footwear. Shin-pads, covered with socks, must be worn.

1. All teams must register a maximum of 8 players on the tournament registration form at the administration tent prior to the commencement of play. Only players who are registered prior to the commencement of play can take part in any of the tournament.

2. Substitutes are roll-on, roll-off and can be made at any time during the game at the referee’s discretion.

3. A team cannot score directly from the kick-off, a throw-in or a goal-kick (restart). The retreat rule will apply for age groups U10 and below and Girls Under 11s.

4. Kick-off will be determined at the start of each game by a coin toss (the coin toss winner will chose either kick-off or ‘end’). Each game will last for 8 minutes (no half-time), with stoppage time to be determined by the referee. In the event of a match progressing into extra-time (semi-final and final ties), 3 minutes shall be played each way. If the match is still undecided after extra-time, the match will be determined by a penalty shoot-out (5 penalties followed by sudden death). During a penalty shootout, only the players on the pitch at the end of extra-time will be allowed to participate in the penalty shoot-out. No change of goalkeepers will be allowed; 5. During the league stage (from Under 9’s upwards):

3 points will be awarded for a win;

2 points will be awarded for a scoring draw;

1 point will be awarded for a no-scoring draw; 6. From Under 9’s upwards, two teams from each group will qualify to enter the semi-finals. The winner of Group A will play the runner-up in Group B and vice-versa. In the event of there being one group in a particular age group, the top four will go through to semi-finals where the winner of the group will play 4th place in one semi-final tie and 2nd and 3rd will compete in the other.

7. The Goalkeeper will only be allowed to handle the ball in the penalty area, however is free to move anywhere in the field of play. Any player may enter and play the ball within the penalty area; 8. Once the Goalkeeper has control of the ball they must distribute the ball by either an under arm roll (on the floor below waist height not looped in the air) or by placing onto the ground for a kick, at which point the ball becomes live. No drop kicks. Any infringement of this will result in a free-kick being given (on the edge of the penalty area, nearest to the offence) to the opposing team; 9. A Goalkeeper will not be allowed to pick up a intentional back-pass; if they do then a free-kick (on the edge of the penalty area, nearest to the offence) will be awarded to the opposing team; 10. There will be no height restrictions; 11. All free-kicks are direct (unless instruction is given by the referee to both teams to the contrary); 12. Defending players shall retreat 2 metres away from a free-kick, at the discretion of the referee; 13. If the ball leaves the field of play it must be returned by an under-arm roll (on the floor below waist height not looped in the air), goal kick or corner kick; 14.

Group positions will be determined by: i. the number of points accrued; ii. teams level on points will be separated by goal difference; iii. teams level on goal difference will be separated by the most number of goals scored; iv. teams level on goals scored will be separated by the result between the tied teams; v. if the teams are still tied, group position will be determined by a penalty shootout;

15. The captain of the winning team (or manager) will return the match card to the registration desk at the end of the match; 16. Any player sent off will be reported to the Organising Committee and will take no further part in the remainder of the tournament (including medals /trophies). They cannot be replaced by another representative of the club; 17. All decisions made by the organising committee are final and not open to appeal; 18. Fair Play and Respect is to be encouraged by officials, players and supporters of all clubs at all times. Any individual deemed to be in serious breach of this will be asked to leave the tournament.

Why we are non-competitive at We are often asked why are tournament is non-competitive for the younger age groups. We believe the focus for these age groups should be on fun and development. By having a non-competitive tournament, it encourages teams of all levels to enter and to really enjoy, what for many will be their first tournament experience without any pressure to win.

It also gives the coaches the opportunity to give their players the chance to play in all the different positions on the pitch, something that is frequently done on the continent to encourage player development. If you want a player to improve their tackling, play in defence where they will get lots of opportunity, you want them to improve their shooting, play in upfront and so on. In a competitive environment, a coach is far less likely to experiment like this.

At these age groups, you could argue it is easier to win than it is to challenge your players to play football. To win, you could instruct your defenders to kick it out of play every time they win it, the midfield to pass forward as soon as they get the ball and strikers to shoot on sight. All of this might win a game at the younger age groups, but does it develop the young players? If instead you instructed the players to try and dribble the ball and beat a ‘man’ or pass forward to a teammate, would that not that have a bigger impact on their development? If a player touches the ball 10 times in a game and another touches it 100 times – which one will improve quicker?

This year we have introduced “The Fair Play Award” for the Under 7 and Under 8 age groups. This will be chosen by our referees and be awarded to the team (one Under 7 & one Under 8) who really embrace the spirit of our tournament. We would love to see players playing with smiles on their faces, coaches encouraging players to play the game in the right spirit and supporters who cheer on moments of skill regardless of what team the player plays for.

Under 7 & Under 8 age groups?

We hope you enjoy the tournament and leave you with the words of Pete Sturgess, the lead coach for the FA for the foundation ages, a hugely experienced coach on what he believes coaches of young players should be focussing on; “We MUST prioritise individual possession (the ability to travel, dribble, turn, screen, shield and spin) ahead of passing, teamwork in the Early Foundation phase. A great technical, decision making and physical capability can be built on afterwards but to skim over or worse, pay lip service to this development should be avoided at all costs. Come on, we need buy in from our coaches, adults and volunteers at all levels of the game so Play that weYour can facilitate Part change.

Enough is enough, lets produce a different of player. I also need (Code kind of Conduct) someone to come up with a feasible argument AGAINST what I am advocating. If you can I will listen and consider.�.

Costessey Sports Club 2018/19 Season Review What a season it has been! First England reach two semi-finals, Norwich City win the Championship and are promoted to the Premier League then we have the best season any of us can remember! We have 29 teams at Costessey, from Under 5’s to two Veterans teams, from Under 10 Girls to a Ladies team. They vary in terms of ability but we are incredibly proud of all of them. Here is a round-up of the major achievements; CUP ACHIEVEMENTS: Ladies – Champions Y.B.V United – Champions U14 Albion – Semi Finalists – 4Sports Trophy U13 United – Champions – Kappa Cup U13 Jets Red – Semi Finalists – Kappa Cup U12 Harriers – Champions – High Altitude County Cup, Futsal Finalists U12 Girls – Runners Up U10 Falcons – Champions - 4Sports Trophy U10 Girls – Runners Up Under 9 Tigers – Runners up – Kappa Cup Under 9 Lions – Semi Finalists – Kappa Cup Under 8 Eagles – Runners Up – Kappa Cup Under 8 Falcons – Semi Finalists – Kappa Cup Under 7 Lions – Semi Finalists – Kappa Cup

LEAGUE ACHIEVEMENTS: Ladies – Champions – Women’s 7-a-side (100% record – Played 14, won 14) Y.B.V United – Champions – Division 3 - (100% record – Played 10, won 10) U13 Jets Red – Runners up Division 1 (finished 1 point off top) U12 Harriers – Runners up Premier League, Champions Interim League (only lost 2 league games) U12 Rhino’s – Runners up Division 2a (losing the league on a penalty shootout after a play-off) U12 Girls – Runners up Division B Finally, we must give special mention to our Under 12 Harriers. They have been together since Under 5’s and are made up of local lads. They have not always been successful but have stuck together to form strong friendships between the players and parents. 10 of their 14 players attend Ormiston Victory Academy (Costessey High) and as such made up 10 of the 11 players that won the Norfolk Schools County Cup – making a County Cup Double.

They are also in the finals of the Futsal competition as two separate teams.

Their coaches Jason White & Paul Cook have done remarkable job coaching and developing local boys to create a fantastic team that we are very proud of. On top of that, Jason has also coached the new Under 5 group with his son and Harrier Oli and has been awarded “Norfolk FA Grassroots Coach of the Year” in recognition of his wonderful contribution to grassroots football.

Grassroots football exists to try to have a positive impact on the kids of the local area. We are so proud to say in April, our club have raised £1042 for Harry and £1042 for Harper, two local kids with serious illnesses in need of help. We raised half the money by each of our teams donating one weeks match subs, while asking their generous opponents to do the same while also holding a collection, while we agreed to match the amount raised as a club.

Harry’s story

Two-year-old Harry is cheeky and full of mischief. He’s active and full of energy, choosing to run everywhere rather than walk! He loves planes, helicopters, diggers and ‘nee-naws’ – any vehicle with a siren. This amazing little boy was diagnosed with high-risk neuroblastoma in January 2018, turning his family’s world upside down.

With Harry nearing the end of his frontline treatment, everyone is hopeful he will be in remission when he has his next scans in April.

But neuroblastoma is a particularly aggressive childhood cancer, almost 50% of children diagnosed will relapse at some point, and when that happens, less than one in ten survive.

His parents needed to raise £239,000 by the end of April to access a vaccine in New York that’s shows promising signs in reducing the chances of relapse, giving Harry the best chance at living cancerfree. We’re pleased to advise that the goal was achieved!

Harper’s story

Our Harper is 18 months old from Norwich.

On our second visit in a week to the hospital due to lack of movement, Harper was born via emergency C-section where she was found to have a rare True Knot in her cord which had cut off the circulation to her brain. After a 7 week stay in NICU due to severe hypoglycaemia we later found out that the cord had also caused multiple cystic lesions on her brain and she was diagnosed with Spastic Quadriplegic Cerebral Palsy and would never walk unaided, if at all.

Through medical advice we found SDR (Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy) surgery that is available in America. This is a spinal surgery which could help Harper take her first steps and is not currently available on the NHS. Our aim is to raise the money for Just4Children for Harper to go to America and have the operation and the intense physiotherapy afterwards. Doing this we the hope that our little girl will not suffer from the day to day pain that cerebral palsy causes her so she can have the best quality of life possible.
