Abstract This paper investigates the relationship between the built environment and the architectural project, in particular with reference to the conservation and redevelopment of existing buildings and the development of social welfare, understood as a project activity aimed at improving the living conditions of the most fragile social classes. The structure of the paper is divided into three parts. The first part is a synthesis and critical analysis of three bibliographic sources, three books concerning the themes of architectural theory, building typology and social housing in the Western context. The books are: “New urban housing. Shared living in Europe ”by Stefano Guidarini,“ The Variations of Identity: The type in architecture ”by Carlos Martí Arís and“ The Twentieth Century City ”by the Italian academic Bernardo Secchi. The second part of the paper exposes the part of the architectural project which I made during an Architectural Design workshop at the Politecnico di Milano (project group: Sofia di Bernardo, Giulia Fratangelo, Ruffino Alarico, Martina Salari), indicating the different phases of the design and the graphic drawings made. The project concerns the redevelopment of an urban lot near the Milano Centrale railway station, in Italy. The chosen project area is partially occupied by an existing building built in the early 1900s, which served as the neighborhood fish market and still has an interesting concrete structure with articulated shapes. The project concerns on the one hand the architectural redevelopment of the market, for which the function and intended use are transformed, and on the other hand the design of new residential buildings for fragile and needy social groups and student cohousing. Finally, the third and final part concerns the general conclusions and considerations of the project. Keywords: Welfare, Architectural regeneration and conservation, Social housing, Urban strategy
