ÅLAND POST HOSTED SEPAC CONFERENCE

Åland Post was honoured to host the 2018 conference of the Small European Postal Administration Co-operation. At the conference, delegates from 8 postal services planned and decided on various joint projects. Furthermore, a representative of a Dutch printing house presented the latest techniques available for stamp printing.

Other items on the agenda that were eagerly discussed were marketing and customer care as well as the use of social media, and the conference also decided on the themes of coming Sepac stamps. More information about these will follow in future editions.

Small postal services met on Åland island

During two intensive days in the beginning of June, eight of the 13 small postal administrations forming the Sepac stamp group met in Åland for their annual conference. Organized as a platform for the members to discuss joint projects and exchange ideas and expertise, the members also decided on the themes for the 2020 and 2021 Sepac issues. Furthermore, the 2018 Sepac folder on the theme

spectacular views was given the green light for printing. Read more about the folder on page 25. The meeting concluded by thanking Anita Häggblom, recently retired Director of Åland Post Stamps and first Chair of the Sepac group back in 2007.

Meeting on the island of Silverskär in the Saltvik archipelago, the participants were also treated to a boat tour at sunset and freshly caught and newly smoked perch.

A cornerstone for the issue of Åland Christmas seals is the charity aspect. This year’s beneficiary is the Åland Autism Spectrum Society. Christmas stamp artist Emelie Bang created the decorative Christmas seals that are now for sale.

CHRISTMAS SEALS FOR PERSONS WITH HIDDEN DISABILITIES

CHRISTMAS is a time for giving. In addition to contributing to a good cause, the colourful Christmas seals will add some Christmas spirit to your cards and presents. Founded in 2014, the Åland Autism Spec trum Society is still a rather young and small organization, working for the benefit of people with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD), their families and other interested parties.

AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER

is an umbrella term for several different neuro-psychiatric developmental disorders that affect communication and social behaviour such as autism, Asperger’s syndrome and other autism-related disorders. Spreading knowledge about and increasing understanding for people with indiscernible disorders as well as pursuing and protecting their rights are some of the main purposes of the society.

UNTIL NOW , the organization has focused mainly on children and youth with various types of ASD, pinpointing a need to cushion and support these children at an early stage. In the last three years, arrang ing ‘Hero Homerun’, a charity race in which children and adults alike run an obstacle race, has been one way of raising funds for lectures given to daycare, school and healthcare professionals. However, many adults with an ASD diagnosis experience a certain level of exclusion. The Christmas seal contribution will help finance a seminar with lecturers focusing on adults with neuro-psychiatric developmental disorders.

A SPECIAL CANCEL for the Postal Boat Race has been made since the start in 1974. The 45th version commemorates the often backbreaking voyage of the postal boat crew across the Åland Sea on their way to or from Sweden. A postcrossing meet-up in Åland is a new tradition of the Finnish

Postcrossing Friends; occupying the Marie hamn post office for a few hours on 8 June, the postcrossers made sure our stamping machine overheated. Åland Post also wished to celebrate the 25th anniversary as an independent postal administration with a special cancellation. It took place in connec tion with the customer event, organized on the premises of the Post at intervals. This is also when next year’s stamp program is re vealed to local collectors who get to mingle with like-minded people as a bonus.

A PHILATELIC MUSIC EXPERI

ENCE, that’s the essence of this year’s series of exhibition products from Åland Post. Well worth collecting, the popular packs are now available to order using the order form. Order now for delivery after 8 November.

WITH A SURE HAND , Swedish art ist Lars Sjööblom has drawn an entrancing series of music instruments representing the countries visited by Åland Post this year. You can almost hear the soft tones of the harp, the sharp clang of the alto sax and the merry tune of the accordion.

LARS SJÖÖBLOM has not only designed the motifs for the exhibition series but also the lovely 2018 Nordic stamp featuring an Atlantic salmon issued on 13 March including the first day cover illustra tion and cancel. Lasse will be known to collectors mainly for his engraved stamps; in fact, his first commission for Åland Post was an engraving of the Kökarsören lighthouse, one of the motifs of the 2008 lighthouse stamp booklet. Lasse drew the music instru ments in Indian ink to create the special effect of engraving on the exhibition cards.

THE POPULAR exhibition cards are a long-running success of Åland Post. The joint theme of the card motifs in combin ation with an artistic touch and lovely cancellations evoke the joy of a collector. Launched in 2008, exhibition stamps make the cards even more unique and exquisite. This development was made possible using

the online My Stamps facilities that are also available for private customers and com panies that wish to create Åland stamps with a personalized motif.

AN EXHIBITION STAMP often shows a detail of the card motif. The stamps are printed in mini-sheets of 8 identical stamps in a frame that is also an Åland Post design. Over the years, a number of differ ent frames have been produced; the 2018 exhibition stamps are printed in the frame issued in 2017.

You can collect a series of individual exhib ition stamps from each exhibition delivered in a glassine bag and as a set of all 14 exhibition mini-sheets, forming an attractive whole.

Year set - the entire stamp year in one go

The time has come to order the 2018 year set, available as of 1 November. The year set is an excellent alternative for you who wish to collect the entire annual issue of Åland stamps, seeing that it contains all issues, i.e. also booklet and miniature sheet as well as the series of franking labels fea turing orchids. Small countries with spectacular views

With this year’s Sepac folder, you can ex perience the sublime and dramatic scenery of tall mountains, lush forests and cold seas getting neither wet nor suffer from altitude sickness. Unique opportunity for complete ferry series

A popular stamp series featuring passenger ferries was issued from 2009 to 2014. You may now order all 12 stamps mounted in a handy plastic pocket. The stamps illuminate Åland passenger ferry traffic that set off in 1959. Among the motifs, you will find ferries ranging from long-lived S/S Ålandsfärjan to M/S Viking Grace, the most recent addition to the Baltic Sea traffic.
