SPECIAL LATIN AMERICAN PHOTOS In a special issue of this magazine, which specializes in authorial photography, the work of photojournalists who have recorded the social struggles that have erupted throughout the continent over the past year is brought together. "The cultural battle takes place in a quadrilateral where the models are in combat. Today human Latin America stands up again. Today the people are demanding a better quality of life. Today we shout to the four winds once and a thousand times enough. The images below say much more than these humble [...] words."
Esta revista especializada en fotografía de autor recoge en un número especial el trabajo de fotoperiodistas que a lo largo del año pasado registraron las luchas sociales que brotaron por todo el continente. "La batalla cultural se da en un cuadrilátero donde los modelos están en combate. Hoy la Latinoamérica humana se pone de pie nuevamente. Hoy los pueblos exigen mejor calidad de vida. Hoy gritamos a los cuatro vientos una y mil veces basta. Las imágenes a continuación dicen mucho más que estas humildes [...] palabras".

KOBE BRYANT, ABSOLUTELY MODERN This tribute by Cuban writer Carlos Manuel Álvarez to Kobe Bryant after his death is a profile with an absolute neatness of speech that with impeccable rhythm, sound and images recalls one of the characteristics that made Bryant eternal: the absolute beauty of his movements: "There are often fans who in the conversation about the best basketball player in history mention Kobe Bryant along with Michael Jordan and Lebron James. That is, strictly speaking, nonsense, and there is only one reason for it, an intangible one: beauty. Which is the physical capacity that a real object or thing has to become imagination. [...] Even today I'm walking down the street and suddenly I start to dribble and execute some random shot and say in a whisper, without knowing what I'm saying, like a backlog of grainy recordings that many years ago I saw on VHS cassettes, sunk in the tranquility of the town: 'Kobe Bryant, unbelievable!'"
Este homenaje del escritor cubano Carlos Manuel Álvarez a Kobe Bryant tras su fallecimiento es un perfil con una absoluta prolijidad de la palabra que con ritmo, sonido e imágenes impecables recuerda una de las características que hizo eterno de Bryant: la belleza rotunda de sus movimientos: "A menudo hay fanáticos que en la conversación sobre el mejor baloncestista de la historia mencionan a Kobe Bryant junto a Michael Jordan y Lebron James. Eso es, en rigor, un despropósito, y hay solo un motivo que lo justifica, uno intangible: la belleza. Que es la capacidad física que tiene un objeto o cosa real de convertirse en imaginación. [...] Aún hoy voy yo caminando por la calle y de repente empiezo a driblear y ejecuto algún tiro cualquiera y digo en un susurro, sin saber lo que digo, como un rezago de grabaciones granulosas que hace muchos años veía en casetes VHS, hundido en la tranquilidad del municipio: ¡«Kobe Bryant, unbelievable!»"

THE VATICAN ACTS IN THE FACE OF THE MARTYRDOM OF 10 PEOPLE, BUT JUSTICE DOES NOT. The Guatemalan investigative journal Nómada recovers the painful story of the genocide of 10 religious during the years of armed conflict and the outrageous way in which the Guatemalan justice system has ignored them while the Vatican beatifies them. "Thousands of community leaders, trade unionists, students and religious were persecuted during the 36 years of the armed conflict in Guatemala. In the most sanguinary period, three Spanish priests and seven Guatemalan catechists - including a 12-year-old boy - were killed in Quiche. And now, 40 years later, the Vatican recognizes their martyrdom, but the Guatemalan justice system ignores them."
El medio investigativo guatemalteco Nómada recupera la dolorosa historia del genocidio de 10 religiosos durante los años de conflicto armado y la indignante forma en que la justicia guatemalteca los ha ignorado mientras el Vaticano los beatifica. "Miles de líderes comunitarios, sindicalistas, estudiantiles y religiosos fueron perseguidos durante los 36 años del conflicto armado en Guatemala. En el período más sanguinario, 3 sacerdotes españoles y 7 catequistas guatemaltecos —incluido un niño de 12 años— fueron asesinados en Quiché. Y ahora, 40 años después, el Vaticano reconoce su martirio, pero la justicia guatemalteca los ignora".

WHAT DO WE TALK ABOUT WHEN WE TALK ABOUT VENEZUELA? In this opinion essay, the Argentinean Martín Caparrós tells from Spain how Venezuelan politics have been used by politicians from all other Spanish-American countries without there being, deep down, a sincere concern for their population. "Venezuela, then, the word Venezuela, the Venezuelan word, has gained in our countries a strength that they never had. Nobody talks about them and about her when they talk about them and about her; most of those who name her do not care about her 32 million citizens, her four or five million exiles, their searches, their sorrows. Venezuela, the word Venezuela, has become a weapon of the big right, a burden of the few left, a constant discomfort, a word that says what it should not. It is strange. A whole country would have to change for that word to finally come back to meaning. Or, who knows, a whole continent."
En este ensayo de opinión, el argentino Martín Caparrós cuenta desde España cómo la política venezolana ha sido usada por los políticos de todos los otros países hispanoamericanos sin que haya, en el fondo, una preocupación sincera por su población. "Venezuela, entonces, la palabra Venezuela, la palabra venezolano, han cobrado en nuestros países una fuerza que nunca tuvieron. Nadie habla de ellos y de ella cuando habla de ellos y de ella; a la mayoría de los que la nombran les dan igual sus 32 millones de ciudadanos, sus cuatro o cinco millones de desterrados, sus búsquedas, sus penas. Venezuela, la palabra Venezuela, se ha vuelto un arma de la gran derecha, un lastre de las pocas izquierdas, una incomodidad constante, una palabra que dice lo que no debiera. Es extraño. Todo un país tendría que cambiar para que esa palabra, por fin, recupere el sentido. O, quién sabe, todo un continente".
