The accolades received by the iconic musical Rent since its premiere in 1996 until now are innumerable.
In 2014, it made history by becoming the first musical to be performed by a U.S. company in Cuba since the Castro family came to power. Out of this journey by the play all the way to Havana, the documentary Revolution Rent was inspired and produced.
SEEING ONE’S HOMELAND
The documentary follows in the footsteps of director Andy Señor Jr., a Cuban-American actor who played Angel in the original Broadway production.
For him, taking the production to the country of his parents and roots meant diving deep into a painful past of exile.
“There was hesitation about telling my family, but I didn’t think too much about it because I knew I wanted to go to Cuba,” Señor Jr. said.
Within six weeks, the production recreated Rent in Havana. The show opened on Dec. 24 in the Cuban capital.
For Señor Jr. and the team, it was a major challenge to channel writer Jonathan Larson’s vision into the show.
“Jonathan’s words, music and reputation are the spirit of what Rent is. People understand the impact of the show and the message of love, tolerance and family through it,” said Señor Jr.
However, Rent in Cuba was a new opportunity for both Señor Jr. and the Cuban cast.
Some of the actors cast had never performed on stage before auditioning, and others were even uncomfortable tackling the issues the musical discusses.

Los elogios recibidos por el icónico musical Rent desde su estreno en 1996 hasta la actualidad son innumerables. En 2014, hizo historia al convertirse en el primer musical interpretado por una compañía estadounidense en Cuba desde que la familia Castro llegó al poder. Ese histórico viaje del musical a La Habana sirvió de inspiración para producir el documental Revolution Rent.

El documental sigue los pasos del director Andy Señor Jr., un actor cubanoamericano que interpretó a Angel en la producción original de Broadway.
Para él, llevar la producción al país de sus padres y sus raíces significaba sumergirse en un doloroso pasado de exilio.
“Tuve dudas sobre si decírselo a mi familia, pero al final no lo pensé mucho, porque sabía que quería ir a Cuba”, dijo Señor Jr.
En seis semanas, Rent se estrenaba en La Habana. El espectáculo se inauguró el 24 de diciembre
Para Señor Jr. y el resto del equipo, fue un gran desafío plasmar la visión del escritor Jonathan Larson en el espectáculo.
“Las palabras, la música y la reputación de Jonathan son el espíritu de lo que es Rent. La gente comprende el impacto del espectáculo y el mensaje de amor, tolerancia y familia que transmite”, dijo Señor Jr.
Así pues, representar Rent en Cuba fue una nueva oportunidad tanto para Señor Jr. como para el resto del elenco cubano.

Rent follows a group of young adults in New York City struggling with economic hardship and the rise of HIV/ AIDS.
“Revolution Rent is a continuation of our journey, as well as a tribute to the power of theater and its ability to transform lives,” said executive producer Neil Patrick Harris.
SEEING A DIFFERENT CUBA
Despite expectations, Señor Jr. realized that being in Cuba as an American meant experiencing cultural differences and understanding the reality of Cuba and not the idea one may have in their head about the island, built on the back of a constant barrage of negative press in the states.
Those coming from backgrounds steeped in the attitudes of exiles from the early days of Castro admitted they had a tough time realizing the reality their parents left behind was just a distant memory.
“Getting there and seeing how urban it was and that young Cuban artists couldn’t relate to the nostalgia that was particular within the exile community was something new for me to understand. So I thought, what is Cuba now that is not this nostalgic version?” said Señor Jr.

UNA CUBA DIFERENTE
A pesar de las expectativas, Señor Jr.se dio cuenta de que estar en Cuba como estadounidense significaba experimentar diferencias culturales y comprender la realidad de Cuba, que no siempre coincide con la idea que uno puede tener en la cabeza sobre la isla, construida sobre la base de un aluvión constante de prensa negativa en los Estados Unidos.
Los espectadores que provienen de entornos impregnados por la cultura de los exiliados de los primeros días de Castro admitieron que les resultó difícil darse cuenta de que la realidad que dejaron sus padres era solo un recuerdo lejano.
“Llegar ahí y ver lo urbana que era, y que los jóvenes artistas cubanos no se identificaban con la nostalgia característica de la comunidad en el exilio fue algo nuevo para mí. Entonces pensé, ¿qué es Cuba hoy, si la realidad no coincide con la versión nostálgica que tengo en mi cabeza?”, dijo Señor Jr. z
