I was lucky enough to be invited by Cameron Mackintosh Ltd to watch Oliver! at the Chichester Festival Theatre before its transfer to the Gielgud Theatre in London’s West End. This production is a true testament to the timelessness of the musical. I left the theatre feeling both entertained and touched by the story’s themes of hope, survival, and redemption. I suggest you book your groups in now, if you haven’t already as I’m sure the West End run will be a massive hit.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button opens this month at the Ambassadors Theatre after a sold-out run at the Southwark Playhouse last year. Take advantage of our EXCLUSIVE group rates now! See page 4 for more info and the cast in rehearsals on page 5.

“London’s biggest and best blockbuster musical” – Heart

Now celebrating 18 incredible years in the West End, the blockbuster musical continues to ‘Defy Gravity’ live onstage at the Apollo Victoria Theatre

Seen by more than 12 million people, the London production of WICKED is already the 10th longest running West End show in British history.

The must-see stage musical phenomenon has already been performed in sixteen countries, winning more than 100 awards on its remarkable global journey. From Singapore and South Korea and the Netherlands to New Zealand, this international mega-hit has amassed audiences of 65 million people.

L. Frank Baum’s classic tale ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Oz’ was first published in 1900 and Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel ‘Wicked’, on which the stage musical is based, creates an origin story for Baum’s infamous ‘Wicked Witch of the West’, reappraising and redeeming her for a new generation.

Director Joe Mantello, together with his team of award-winning designers and theatre-makers, has created an imaginative and visually spectacular world within which the musical’s extraordinary story unfolds.

The gigantic production, complete with the biggest orchestra in the West End, transports audiences on an escapist adventure in Oz, entertaining all who enter its magical world.

Reviewing the situation

Cameron Mackintosh celebrates Lionel Bart’s timeless masterpiece

I was taken to see OLIVER! for the first time as a 13-year-old schoolboy, by my aunt, shortly after it opened in June 1960. I sat mesmerised in the gallery in seats costing 1/6 (15p!) taking in the brilliance of Lionel Bart’s glorious songs and brilliant adaptation of Dickens’ classic story and marvelling at the sensationally innovative moving scenery of design genius Sean Kenny. The show influenced my life evermore and changed the British musical for ever.

After a short stint sweeping the stage of Drury Lane, in October 1965, aged just 19, I managed to get myself hired on the first British national tour of OLIVER!, both as performer and Assistant Stage Manager. On the opening night in Manchester, I met the show’s legendary creator Lionel Bart for the first time. Within two years I managed to move from being an ASM to producing my first show.

10 years later in early 1978, in an extraordinary turn of fate (the first of many), the show’s original producer, Donald Albery, sold the rights to a film company whom he introduced me to. It gave me the opportunity to put on a revival of the very production I had myself been in a few years earlier; and it had a very successful run back in the same theatre, the New (now renamed the Noël Coward) where it had originally opened – a theatre that I now serendipitously own. Without me knowing, it was seeing this revival that inspired authors Boublil and Schönberg to write the phenomenon, Les Misérables, which I ended up producing.

Long before this, Lionel Bart had rashly sold off his stage rights in OLIVER! so on being offered a co-ownership of the rights, for the very first time, it allowed me to give Lionel a piece of his original royalty back, as well as become guardian of his artistic rights as author of the show’s book, music and lyrics, which Lionel had also given away. After many years of being financially and creatively in the doldrums, Lionel was again rightfully back on top thanks to the renewed success of his timeless masterpiece and able to enjoy his great achievements to the end of his far too short life.

This new production ran for several years and was revived even more spectacularly at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2009, starring the incomparable Rowan Atkinson, leading a huge company of over 80 on that great stage. Plans to bring back OLIVER! to the West End a decade later were frustrated by the Covid shutdown but once theatres reopened again, Matthew Bourne and I started to “review the situation”.

From that day I was asked to be the stage show’s worldwide representative. In 1994, with the original creative team no longer alive, I decided to reinvent a spectacular new production of OLIVER! for the London Palladium stage where it was an enormous success, first starring Jonathan Pryce directed by the very young up-and-coming director Sam Mendes and choreographer Matthew Bourne

The enforced wait got us thinking that having pulled off the biggest production of OLIVER! in history, our instinct was that it could be exciting to return to the more intimate ensemble scale and roots of the brilliant original at the New Theatre, now the Noël Coward. We asked Matthew’s long time design collaborator Lez Brotherton to join us to create a contemporary new approach, inspired by Sean’s original. The unique exciting challenge of Chichester’s stage was a terrific catalyst for our reimagination and working with our brilliant young cast brought a thrilling modern edge to Lionel’s joyful and timeless masterpiece.

RICHARD II comes to the Bridge Theatre next year

Group Line Exclusive!

Richard II is charismatic, eloquent and loved by his friends. And a disastrous King – dishonest, capricious and politically incompetent.

Echoing down the centuries is the perennial problem: how to deal with a ruler who has a rock solid right to rule but is set on wrecking the country he leads.

Shakespeare’s subtle, ambiguous and beautiful play finds feudal England on the cusp of modernity, as a divinely sanctioned monarch is confronted, in the figure of Henry Bolingbroke, by the hard-headed pragmatism of real authority.

Olivier-award winning Jonathan Bailey dons the crown as he takes on the title role in this new production directed by Nicholas Hytner, with set and costume by Bob Crowley

Jonathan Bailey’s past work includes Bridgerton, Fellow Travellers, Cassio in Nicholas Hytner’s National Theatre production of Othello and Edgar to Ian McKellen’s King Lear. He has also won an Olivier Award for his role of Jamie in Company and is Fiyero in the Wicked movie.

The Bridge Theatre is located in the heart of London, nestled at the foot of Tower Bridge, with exceptional views of the Thames. Within walking distance of the Tower of London, HMS Belfast and The Shard, The Bridge is the perfect addition to your day out.

Staff Review: Mamma Mia! The Party

MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY recently celebrated their 5th birthday. Head of Agency Sales Mark Bower was invited along to the birthday celebration. Read on to see what he thought of the show…

MAMMA MIA! THE PARTY is a wonderfully immersive and joyous experience that feels like a mini vacation to the Greek islands. From the moment you enter the venue, it’s designed to look and feel like a Greek taverna—whitewashed walls, warm lighting, and rustic decor. The energy in the room is electric, and the atmosphere is incredibly relaxed and welcoming. Björn Ulvaeus was in attendance which was a real treat as I am a huge ABBA fan.

The cast is vibrant and engaging, performing with so much passion that it’s impossible not to get swept up in the fun. The storyline is light-hearted, with moments of comedy, romance, and of course, plenty of ABBA songs. It’s not a traditional theatre experience where you sit back and watch— you’re part of the action, with performances happening around you, and the audience is encouraged to sing along and even dance.

The food is Mediterranean-themed, with dishes like grilled meats, salads, and desserts that complement the Greek setting. It’s not just dinner and a show, but a full-on interactive experience, which is what makes it so unique. You feel like you’re at a massive party where everyone’s invited, and the night ends with a huge finale where the audience is up and dancing to ABBA’s greatest hits.

This is a must-see for any ABBA or Mamma Mia! fans, or anyone looking for a night of light-hearted fun, music, and dancing.

Experience magic like never before

“One of the great magicians of our time” – The New York Times

Making its UK debut in London’s West End this autumn, Asi Wind’s new show, INCREDIBLY HUMAN, is shrouded in mystery. Yet, those familiar with his performances know to expect jaw-dropping feats of magic and mind-reading, promising an utterly unique and captivating night out.

A longstanding collaborator of David Blaine, Wind was crowned the ‘2022 Magician of the Year’ by the Academy of Magical Arts. His sensational magic has astounded Whoopi Goldberg and Kelly Clarkson. Moreover, his appearance on Penn & Teller: Fool Us has become one of the mostwatched performances in the show’s history, boasting over 16 million views on YouTube.

Wind’s recent Off-Broadway show, Inner Circle, was a critically acclaimed, sold-out success, described as “Astonishing” (The New Yorker). His followup, INCREDIBLY HUMAN, transcends the boundaries of magic, reminding us that we all possess magic within ourselves.

Star Interview!

Ben Delahunty-Jones and Sam Young from the Group Line team recently interviewed Asi Wind. Read on to see what he had to say…

How are you feeling about performing in London’s West End?

Performing in London is a dream because I’m a fan of the city. I think it’s one of the most beautiful cities in the world, and since I was a kid, my dream was to perform on the West End and here I am. So it’s exciting. What has been your favourite venue or audience to perform and why in the world?

So as a magician, I perform everywhere. People book me to do private events and whatnot. But to be honest, the best shows are always the ones where we can control everything. Like this room. This room is designed exactly for us to do INCREDIBLY HUMAN. And it’s our best chance to create as close as possible to a perfect show. So this is going to be fun.

Have you ever had a trick that’s not gone quite to plan on a live show?

Okay. People always ask what if something goes wrong? (Joking) It never does! No, it does. I’m human and that’s part of being human. The idea is not to stay out of trouble - it is to get out of trouble. And I think that is what the years have given me. That’s the gift of time. I’ve learned how to get out of trouble to the point that I’m the only one who knows I messed up.

And maybe my crew. But I think, to be honest with you, mistakes are beautiful. I mean, look at paintings. They’re not perfect, but I think the imperfection in those paintings is what makes them so beautiful. So we should embrace the fact that not everything is perfect. We make mistakes every now and then. It’s a good lesson. What do you hope audiences will take away from your performances here?

You know, as a magician, my goal is not to have the audience sit here and go, wow, he’s so good at what he does. My goal is actually to have a conversation with the audience. The best show I do is the one that I walk away learning something from my audience. So it is a conversation and the one thing that’s really important to me with this specific show is to remind the audience how incredible they are, because we all have this capacity to do these beautiful things. But every now and then we need something to remind us.

How do you come up with the name Incredibly Human?

It’s a good question. What I like about the name INCREDIBLY HUMAN is that at first it sounds like a compliment, right? An incredible human. And who’s incredible? Me? The audience? All of us?

Well, I think it’s all of us. But think about it. The word incredible is a positive term, but it’s also a negative term. Incredible - Not credible. In other words, the opposite of honest, the opposite of the truth. I consider myself an honest man, so my goal is - can you be both credible and incredible?

And that’s one of the dilemmas or the conflicts that I experience as a magician, because my obligation as a human being is to tell you the truth. I want people to walk out of this room knowing more about the world, not less. On the other hand, I want to blow your minds and show you things that should not exist - so you get both!

What made you choose this venue?

When my producers said we have to go to London, obviously I was excited. And then, they showed me the venue - the Underbelly Boulevard - and I thought, this is the most perfect room for this show! This room in and of itself is magic. The entire auditorium can rotate, you can control the height of each seat. Every seat here is amazing. And we can control how it’s oriented and how people sit. It’s. It’s a dream. Like I can design the theatre? This is too good to be true!

Group Sales Operations Manager Jed Tang recently saw STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW. Read on to see what he thought…

As an enormous fan of the Stranger Things series, I was excited to see how the world of Hawkins, would translate to the stage. The adaptation delivered a compelling mix of nostalgia and fresh theatrical magic that makes you feel like you’re in 1959.

The cast brought the characters to life with impressive dedication. The actors managed to embody the spirit of their TV counterparts while adding their own flair. The chemistry among the ensemble was palpable, particularly in scenes that demanded emotional depth and camaraderie.

One of the highlights was the show’s ability to connect with the audience on a personal level. Whether through thought-provoking themes, TV fan favourite characters, or simply the sheer power of the performance, the show made me reflect, feel, and appreciate the art of theatre in a new way. Overall, STRANGER THINGS: THE FIRST SHADOW was a thrilling experience that honoured the beloved series while offering something new. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or new to the world of Hawkins, this production is worth seeing for its captivating performances and atmospheric design.

I can’t wait to see the show again soon!

Star Interview!

We recently interviewed Mitchell Zhangazha who plays the role of Michael in MJ The Musical. Read on to see what he had to say…

Michael Jackson is known for his exceptional talent in both music and dance. What is the most challenging part of portraying him on stage?

I would say the most difficult part about portraying Michael Jackson is capturing his attention to detail and the specificity of his dance moves and vocals when performing. Some of the moves that he makes look so simple are much harder than they seem and you have to be fully focused and committed in every performance to do his body of work and material justice. What makes MJ THE MUSICAL so special is that we try to deliver the highest quality of performance in order to maintain the standards that Michael gave us whenever he performed and the special feeling he gave to fans at all of his concerts. That puts an added pressure on myself and all of the other MJ’s though as you want to uphold that standard he set and give the best quality performance as is possible.

Did you have to undergo any special vocal or dance training to accurately represent Michael’s style and energy?

Yes months before the London rehearsals began I began training to get Michael’s vocal quality. I started with some vocal sessions with my coach Dane Chalfin who gave me a number of techniques to match Michael’s vocal quality, but also sing the show 8 times a week as safely as possible. I then was lucky enough to fly to New York to work with Rich and Tone Talauega who worked with Michael extensively and so the knowledge and level of detail that they provided to help me get Michael’s movement up to scratch was incredible. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to work with them and I learned so much about myself as a performer and man

What’s your favourite scene or song to perform and why?

My favourite scene and song to perform is Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ In the scene leading up to this song we see Michael struggling to find himself as an artist, but in this moment of the show and throughout the number you see how he starts to flourish and turn from a boy to a man, while picking up various accolades. The routine and how we transition to different moments of Michael’s career in just this song alone is just incredible.

Is there a particular moment in the show that resonates with you personally or that you feel is especially powerful for the audience?

I think Keep The Faith resonates with me a lot as I think everyone at some stage in their life has doubted themselves and their self-worth, but in that song and that moment we see Quincy Jones really pick Michael back up and encourage him to remain positive about his music, self-importance and artistry. The script and journey of the scene into the song is beautiful

How have audiences responded to your portrayal of Michael? Are there any memorable reactions or moments with fans that stand out?

Coming into MJ THE MUSICAL, I think the fan reaction was something that I was most worried about purely because of how iconic and significant Michael was for so many people. However, the response has been nothing that I could have ever imagined. Whether that be on stage, at stage door on social media, the reaction and response has been so lovely, kind and its allowed me to really settle and grow into the role. A particular standout moment for me was receiving a standing ovation at the end of Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ in our opening performances of the show and the audience cheering for what felt like 5 minutes! It’s rare you get mid show standing ovations, so those moments have really stuck with me! What has been the most rewarding part of bringing such an iconic figure to life on stage?

What’s been most rewarding on a personal level is firstly being able to say I am playing Michael Jackson! The King of Pop! Not many people get to have that honour that and it’s something I’ll definitely be telling my grandkids. I remember the imposter syndrome and self doubt I had at the start about playing this role and thinking that there was no way I was going to be able to do it once, let alone 8 times a week. The fact that I am now doing this, while having the time of my life feels special and is definitely very rewarding. I am a lucky man!
