THE GREAT GATSBY must end this September!

Groups Account Handler Sam Young went to watch THE GREAT GATSBY at the London Coliseum last month with her clients from Google. They all dressed up in 1920’s fashion and loved the show. “This production is nothing short of SPECTACULAR! The costumes are utterly breathtaking –shimmering flapper dresses, sharp tuxedos, and enough sparkle to rival the stars over Gatsby’s mansion itself! And the decorations - Lavish is an understatement! Every detail of the set design is a work of art, creating a truly immersive and glamorous backdrop that instantly transports you. I didn’t just watch the show, I lived it! I truly felt like I was dancing alongside Daisy and Gatsby, sipping champagne whilst witnessing the very essence of the jazz age firsthand.” – Kasia Demczenko Book your group tickets from just £30!

Star interview!

We recently interviewed BURLESQUE THE MUSICAL director, choreographer and starring in the role of Sean - Todrick Hall. Read on to see what he had to say…

What drew you to BURLESQUE as a stage production, and why do you think now is the right time for its West End debut?

I am a proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. This is a very fitting question as it’s currently Pride Month. Burlesque has been a huge staple in our community. Dancers in the drag community have embraced the music from the show for ever. I think the movie of Burlesque brilliantly translates into being a stage musical, and now, when the world is so divided, is the right time for it. It’s a musical that brings people together and allows them to have fun and allows people to dress up in their best pink attire and show up and have fun in the theatre. It’s something that is very needed and necessary now.

As both a performer and director, how do you balance spectacle with storytelling in a show as glamorous as BURLESQUE?

I don’t know how many people there are out there who have directed, performed and been a composer on a musical like this. For me, storytelling always comes first. In order to enjoy a musical you have to enjoy the characters that are telling it. You have to know what they want and be rooting for them to achieve it. This show speaks to me so much because just like Ali, I am a person who grew up in Texas and had dreams way bigger than the county I was in, and I travelled by myself with nothing but a suitcase and a dream to New York City to try and make it on Broadway. I did the same thing again when I moved to Los Angeles to try and make a name for myself in social media and YouTube and I feel in some weird shape or form I’m doing that right now with my move to London. I feel that I have to prove to West End while and London audiences that I’m capable of directing a show. And I’m doing it by myself. I’m just as scared now as Ali was to move to LA in the film and to move to NYC in our version of Burlesque. I think if you aren’t doing things that scare you then you are probably not doing the right things to fulfil your artistry and help you grow as a person.

What do you hope audiences take away from this version of BURLESQUE that they might not have gotten from the film?

I think that this show allows the audience to delve more into Ali’s story. There are more twists and turns that are different from the film that I don’t want to spoil. The show is slightly different, but Ali’s main objective in the heart of the show is very similar. One thing that I really like about this show is that all of the music you will hope to hear from the soundtrack of the film is performed on stage; but there are different versions. Some of the songs are re-imagined, and rearranged and we have

a lot of new songs written by Jess Folley and myself. I think writing new music for a musical that has iconic moments already is a very difficult challenge. But in our show I think that the transition from the songs written by Sia and Diane Warren and Christina Aguilera herself, to the songs written by Jess and I really work well together in tandem, so that the music sounds very pop, now and cohesive. What has it been like collaborating with Christina Aguilera and others from the original film, if at all?

Well Steve Antin is the brainchild of BURLESQUE which was inspired by his sister, Robin Antin who happens to be a great friend of mine. It has been such a roller coaster bringing Steve’s vision to life on stage but one that I will never forget. It’s been challenging but rewarding. I think that working with Christina Aguilera has been a dream of mine. I remember growing up seeing her perform on Mickey Mouse Club; watching her live performances on the Disney Channel to following her through to her Dirty Era, to hearing her sing the soundtracks to some of my favourite Disney movies. I just think that so many people have followed her and she’s remained relevant since the 90s to now.

To be able to work with. her on such a clos level is amazing. We have similar relationships with the movie and the show having both written music and starred in them.

by Jon Sams

What is your favourite song in the show and why?

I would say that my favourite song in the show is the Prologue. It’s the first thing the audience experiences. It sets the tone – and lets them know that they can holler and hoot throughout the show.

If you had to sum up the show in 3 words, what would they be?

Coming to the Apollo Theatre next year!

From the BAFTA Award-winning co-creator of Yes, Minister and Yes, Prime Minister, Jonathan Lynn, comes the long-awaited final chapter of British political satire — and it is as cunning, cutting, and catastrophically funny as ever

Jim Hacker (played by national treasure Griff Rhys Jones) is back — older, but perhaps not wiser, and still utterly baffled by the real world. Hoping for a quiet retirement at the tranquil Hacker College, Oxford, Jim instead finds himself facing the ultimate modern crisis: cancelled by the college committee.

Enter the delightfully devious Sir Humphrey Appleby (played by the acclaimed Clive Francis), who has lost none of his love for bureaucracy, Latin phrases, and well-timed obstruction.

Can Humphrey out manoeuvre the meddling students, the Fellowship, and reality itself? Or is it finally time to say, “I’m Sorry, Prime Minister...”?

Brimming with razor-sharp wit, nostalgic brilliance, and more doublespeak than a press briefing, this is political comedy at its most timeless —and timely.

We recently interviewed Victoria Hamilton-Barritt who plays Persephone in HADESTOWN. Read on to see what she had to say…

What initially drew you to your role in HADESTOWN?

I’d heard Amber Gray on the cast recording many years ago and thought how we shared a similar tonality and energy, and it felt like the character of Persephone was a great role that I could get my teeth into. The subject matter of the show was also different to other shows and that grabbed my attention.

How do you personally relate to the character you play?

I feel in many ways I’ve brought myself to this character. I’m used to coming up with obscure heightened characters most of the time, so I felt that I could sit back on this one and relish Persephone being more neutral, but still moments where she’s outrageous. I aim to lead with love, give benefit of the doubt, be compassionate, giving but certainly not a push over, just like Persephone is. Also, we both enjoy a drink at a party!

How do you and the ensemble build chemistry on stage, especially for such an emotionally intense story?

As a company we’ve been so lucky to have struck gold. Everyone gets on so well which is very fortunate and we’re grateful for that. We all knew we were creating something special with our vision on the story early in the process and it gets better every day. We all trust each other so much and look after each other.

Can you describe a typical day in the life of a HADESTOWN cast member? I start my day by spending time with my kids before dropping them off to school. I usually then spend time at home relaxing or getting on with chores. Once I’ve picked the kids up from school, I make my way to the

theatre and head straight into warm up. I usually wind-up Dylan Wood (who plays Orpheus) because it’s fun to! I’ll then go to my dressing room, have a cup of tea and start getting ready. Wigs, hair and make up come into my dressing room and get me into character. Once all final checks are done, we all head onto stage for the show. I either relax in the interval or go live on Instagram, before heading back in to raise some hell for Act 2! After the show it’s time to make my way home, have a snack and a cup of nettle tea before clocking off for the day.

What’s your favourite song to perform, and why?

I have a few. How Long which I sing with Chris Jarman (who plays Hades) is one of my favourites – it feels so powerful for Persephone in that moment, of getting some control over Hades. It’s a real turning point for her where she shows her power and what she can do. I also like performing Chant (Reprise) and Wait for Me (Reprise), I love walking on the revolve on-stage during both of these songs and seeing all the elements come together with the entire cast. There’s so much action from all of the cast during this song, which makes it excellent to do and to watch.

What message do you hope the audience takes away from HADESTOWN?

I think this story is strangely relatable to everyone in many ways. Love, loss, fear, companionship, temptation, self-doubt, regret, control, sorrow - and I’m sure there’s more that could be added to that list. This grew apparent to me after watching the audience reactions on a daily basis from the piece which I hadn’t anticipated. The message they’re left with is unique and personal to them as the show touches many subject matters.

“Theatrical

solid gold” – Variety

It’s 1976 and one band are about to break through, break down, or break up…

Star interview!

We recently interviewed STEREOPHONIC

Step into the studio with the record-breaking, record-making new play STEREOPHONIC

Plug into the electric atmosphere as one up-and-coming rock band record the album that could propel them to superstardom. Amid a powder keg of drugs, booze and jealousy, songs come together and relationships fall apart. The mics are on, the tapes are rolling, but with this band, someone’s always out of tune…

Written by David Adjmi, directed by Daniel Aukin, and featuring original music by Will Butler, formerly of Arcade Fire, STEREOPHONIC grants you intimate fly-on-the-wall access to the discord and disharmony of the creative process.

Following a smash-hit run on Broadway, the most Tony-nominated play of all time is now playing for a strictly limited season at the Duke of York’s Theatre.

playwright David

Adjmi. Read on to see what he had to say…

What initially inspired you to write STEREOPHONIC?

I was on a flight to Boston when Led Zeppelin’s haunting cover of Babe I’m Gonna Leave You came on the radio. I knew the song from childhood, but I hadn’t ever really listened to it, and I was struck by the rawness and unmasked pain in the vocals. As Robert Plant taunts his lover with the threat of abandonment, his voice soars and shreds in a Dionysian frenzy of Eros and pain—the subtext being I can’t ever leave you. It’s the unresolvable tension between these two that make the song great. As I imagined Plant singing this in the intimate confines of an analog music studio in the 1970s it struck me that this could be the setting for a play. I didn’t know what the play would be exactly or how I would write it but I was excited by the sonic opportunities afforded by the setting, as well as the emotional landscape Plants traverses in that song. How did working with Will Butler shape the play during development?

It wasn’t so much that Will shaped the play as much as learned to work within a very tightly constructed corset. Four and a half years after Wil agreed to write the songs, I finally had a draft to show him. It had taken me that long to figure out precisely how many songs the play would need, and how they were meant to feel, and when they would recur in new arrangements. I had written lots of abstract conflicts centering around problems band members had around song elements—except there were no songs when I wrote that draft. So Will had to reverse engineer everything. For instance, characters in act two argue over a bass riff, one that would be debated repeatedly over the course of the play. Will’s task was to make each version of the riff make not only musical sense, but dramatic sense—in a way that built stakes. In Act Two, Simon can’t get a drum to sound the way Peter wants it, and I wrote detailed descriptions of Peter’s complaint (around a drum part that didn’t yet exist) in the dialogue. So, Will took the details around that complaint as written and wrote a song that did all the drum stuff Peter demanded in that moment.

How much research into the era, music and industry did you do before starting the script?

I did read a few memoirs, but mainly learned about the recording process by watching documentaries – because I didn’t want the play to feel academic or ‘researched’, I wanted it to feel deeply experiential and granular and specific. So whenever something in one of these documentaries surprised me or excited me or illuminated something specific about the process I would add it to a series of notes and sketches, and eventually I would start to build scenes from these sketches. Because I took something of an outside-in approach, I enlisted the help of an engineer from the period who went over my early drafts and noted all my errors and mistaken assumptions about the process. It was kind of a painstaking process that took me many years, but I think you can feel all the textures and nuances in the script that I might not have arrived at had I researched the play in a more conventional way.

What has surprised you most about audience reactions to the play?

Everything surprises me. I’m never not surprised. After our first preview on Broadway, once actors finished the curtain call and exited the stage the audience wouldn’t leave; they gave a standing ovation to a bare stage for something like three minutes—which is actually quite a long time. When a play resonates with audiences in this way it is genuinely shocking, because playwrights are just these weirdos noodling around with stuff that interests us. You can’t ever know what will connect with audiences in a deep way. So yes, it is wildly gratifying to know that there are people who have seen this show 40 or 50 times. I’m not really sure how to process that kind of adulation, but I am so grateful for it.

Have you made any changes for the West End?

After 11-plus years, I can safely say the play is as finished as it will ever be!

Alicia Vikander and Andrew Lincoln star in new production of

THE LADY FROM THE SEA

Fearful she may have settled too easily for a comfortable life married to a well-off doctor, Ellida searches for a way to break the predictable routine her existence has become. When a lover from her past appears at their remote country house, she has to choose between the life she has now built and the one she left behind long ago.

THE LADY FROM THE SEA, written and directed by Simon Stone, after Henrik Ibsen, is a thrilling dissection of desire, loss and rebirth for the contemporary age.

Starring Oscar winner Alicia Vikander (The Danish Girl, Ex Machina) and marking the return of Andrew Lincoln (Love Actually, The Walking

Dead) to the London stage, THE LADY FROM THE SEA is Henrik Ibsen’s most radically modern portrayal of a woman’s fight for autonomy in her relationship.

With this new production, Simon Stone, acclaimed Australian theatre and film director known for his radical reimagining of classic works including Yerma at the Young Vic and Phaedra at the National Theatre, makes his debut at the Bridge Theatre.

Ellida will be played by Alicia Vikander, the Academy Award winning Swedish actress and producer, while Andrew Lincoln, award-winning British actor of stage and screen, takes the role of Edward, for this strictly limited run of nine weeks.

The Bridge Theatre is located at the foot of Tower Bridge, within walking distance of some of London’s most iconic landmarks, including the Tower of London, the Shard, and HMS Belfast.

A major new London production!

Why would you go into the woods? To sell the cow. To lift the spell. To visit mother. To see the king. Or maybe to find yourself?

In Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s dazzling musical, the Baker, the Baker’s Wife, the Witch, Jack, Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella and Rapunzel take us beyond happy ever after to discover what really matters.

This brand-new staging for The Bridge is helmed by director Jordan Fein and designer Tom Scutt, fresh from their production of Fiddler of the Roof which received an astounding 13 Olivier Award nominations. It won three Olivier awards, including Best Musical Revival and Best Set Design (Tom Scutt)

Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s collaboration – their second, after Sunday in the Park with George – brilliantly weaves together four Grimms’ fairy-tales in a story of a baker and his wife on their quest to reverse a curse of childlessness cast upon them by the wicked witch.

On its Broadway debut in 1986, INTO THE WOODS won Tony awards each for Sondheim (Best Score) and Lapine (Best Book). This will be its first major London production since 2016.

INTO THE WOODS will be at The Bridge for a strictly limited 20-week run.
