ISSUE 3 March 2023

Notes From The Basileus

Greetings Sorors, I trust that you are enjoying the March weather with the hints of Spring on the horizon. We are now off to our 2023 year, and I hope you have joined both a Standing and Program Committee. There is much work to do, and we have a place for everyone. As you know, we are at our best when we feel connected by sharing our time and talents. Please continue to remain in contact with your committee members and committee chairman.

A special thank you to Soror Terri Adams- Kincaid, Soror Katrina Hunt, Soror May Bogan and the Membership Committee for a wonderful Founders’ Day celebration. It was a great opportunity to pause and remember our founders of our illustrious and beloved sorority. We also had a chance to celebrate our Sorors who have achieved membership milestones: Pearl, Golden, and Silver Star Sorors.

Please join me in welcoming the following newly transferred/reactivated Sorors to Delta Upsilon Omega: Soror Cynthia Abram, Soror Aliyanda Harris Cobbinah, Soror Yolanda Heidelberg, Soror Ieisha Hawley, Soror Rella Jones, Soror Sonya Daniels Walker, Soror Aisha Watkins, Soror Makenzie Moss, Soror McKenzie Taylor, Soror Shakena McBride Moore and Soror Rachel Hughes. We are excited that you are a part of DUO!

If you are planning to attend the 94th FWR Conference, there is still time to register. Please note the March 17 Late Registration deadline. Register online at FWR Events - Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. (aka1908.com). Don’t miss this opportunity of engaging workshops, memorable experiences, and sisterly bonding as we “Reign: The Dynasty of Service and Sisterhood”.

Lastly, I am looking forward to seeing you poised and pretty at our upcoming Chapter meeting where we will take our new Chapter photo with our brooches immediately following our Chapter meeting. Our March 11th Chapter meeting will be held 9:30 AM at:

Southside Church of Christ

12200 59th Avenue S

Seattle, WA 98178

Sisterly with a smile,

Kristie C. Thompson

Polishing Our Pearls Protocol Committee Insights

A New Year is an optimal time to refocus and reconnect in many areas of our life, and is also a good time to remind ourselves of Chapter Meeting Protocol.

Business Attire is expected at Chapter meetings unless otherwise stated.

CLOSED TOE SHOES PREFERRED SHORT OR LONG SLEEVES SANDALS ARE ACCEPTABLE SKIRT AT KNEE LENGTH HOSIERY PANT SUITS

Greetings:

At a Chapter Meeting, the main greeting would be the following:

“To Madam Basileus, to our Former Basilei and all others who serve Alpha Kappa Alpha Good Morning Sorors…”

This greeting, or other appropriate wording, is stated only by the first speaker of the event.

All others who follow need only acknowledge the leader — the Basileus:

“To Madam Basileus – Good Morning Sorors” There is no greeting before offering a prayer, meditation, grace, and/or invocation.

These guidelines are applicable for plenary sessions, luncheons and events.

Personal Deportment:

Smile and make contact. Your smile conveys warmth and openness.

Greet sorors directly. For example, “How do you do?” , “Hello”, and “It’s a pleasure to meet you” , are all good openers. Repeating the sorors name also helps you remember it.

When a hug is not appropriate for the setting, shake hands. Do this by grasping the other person’s hand firmly, shake two or three times, let go, and step back. Avoid personal grooming in public. Identify a private place to apply make-up or perform other personal grooming.

One More Opportunity

Sorors, February’s Nalia Swap was a big success and we want to make the next one even bigger. Many of you said you had things ready to bring and forgot them, PUT THEM IN THE CAR NOW. As announced, we will be at Southside Church of Christ or the March Meeting and Chapter Picture where we should have more room to spread things out for easier shopping. Remember, anything remaining after this month’s swap will be disposed of according to AKA guidelines unless you wish to take your own items back home
