The Future Is Riding On Ajax

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

By the time you read this, we will be through the first half of 2024. Where has the yeargone?

In the first quarter newsletter, I challenged everyone to improve on quality. Have we? I think so. Are we there yet? No. However, I know everyone is working on improving,andwewillreturntowhereweoncewere.

How do we continue to improve? Design, discuss, and execute a plan. When complete,reflectonlessonslearnedandsharethemthroughout thecompanysothatotherscanlearnfromthegoodandthebad.

ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT MAKING MONEY MOVES

Our Engineering team has been on quite a roll, with innovative approaches and some remarkably close calls. Under the leadership of Director Felipe Jaramillo a

To keep the ball rolling we are excited to welcome Arielle Zazik, who recently transitioned from her role as Project Manager in Tampa to Engineering Manager, replacing Mike Morgan. Congratulations to Mike as he has taken on the role of DirectorofOperationsfortheTampadivision,youaregoingtomissus!

Our Engineering department currently oversees 14 Alternative Delivery projects, collectively valued at approximately $850 million. These projects span various stagesofdevelopmentandhighlightourteam’scapabilityandcommitment. On thepursuitside,wecurrentlyhaveoursightsseton8additionalprojectstotaling ~$900millionandwiththeGovernor’sMovingFloridaForwardinitiativestartingto materializewecanexpectmoreopportunitiestobeadded.

Of note on the US 98 corridor, there were four major Design Build projects spanning from North of Lakeland to Dade City, and our team, including Prince ContractingasourJVpartner,wasabletowinthreeofthosefourprojectsthanks toourtechnicalscore,whichrarelyhappensinDesignBuild!

The dedication, creativity, and competitive desire to win separates our team from the rest. I am confident in saying ourteamofprofessionalsarenearthetop,ifnotatthetop of the industry when it comes to Alternative Delivery projects. They have proven repeatedly they are a force to bereckonedwithintheindustry.

Our teams have worked tirelessly to meet and exceed our goals, resulting in significant progress and success across multiple projects. ESTIMATING SUCCESS

Inthesecondquarterof2024,theAjax EstimatingDepartmentpickedupseverallarge constructioncontractstoaddtoourrobust backlog.Thisincludestwomajordesign-build jobsfortheTampaarea–E7R33US301 Widening(aJointVenturewithPrince Contracting)andE7R36SR60&CR39Rigid PavementConstruction(whichincludestwo separateintersectionprojects).Additionaljobs landedincludetheremainingfive-mileroad wideningsectionofSR82,threeairportpaving contracts,twoLeeCountyresurfacingcontracts, Polkcountypurchaseorders,CityofArcadia pavingcontract,andajobforFlorida DepartmentofAgricultureinWauchula.

Asourcompanyandstate continuestogrowand develop,wehavealsoadded anewemployeetoourstaff ValeriaCastro.

TRANSPORTATION DOIN’ WELL

AsanEstimatingAnalyst, Valeriawillbeworkingonplanquantitytakeoffs, estimatecalculationsandquantityverification whilegainingfieldexperienceandworking closelywithourseasonedstaff.Valeriacomes touswithexperienceinsalesandcontract coordination.HereducationincludesaBachelor ofEconomicsandiscurrentlypursuinga Master’sinBusinessfromthe UniversityofSouthFlorida. WeareexcitedtohaveValeria aboard.

Weareintheprocessof takingoverallinbound materialsfortheplants.We havealsotakenonhelping outwiththeshopon speckingoutlightand heavydutytrucksand bodiesforthecrews.

Wehadoursecondannual TruckingSafetyMeetingin May.We’vehadstruggles withrecruitingenough driverstofillallourtrucks company-wide.

Wehaveestablishedweekly teammeetingswithour stafftoreviewbudgetsand safety.We’vealsostarted

weekly meetingswith theshopto streamline repairsand costs.

KEEPING UP WITH THE SHOP

As always we’d like to start by saying a special thanks to all our hardworking mechanicsandstaff!InQ2wemodifiedourinternalOrganizationalchart WecreatedtheshopforemanpositioninTampa,Venice,andFortMyersshops.

The shop foreman position oversees the day-to-day operations of running an effectiveshopandensuresschedulecomplianceforeacharea. We would like to recognize and congratulate the following employees who have takenontheshopforemanrole:

Justin Scharping has also been promoted to the Equipment Maintenance Manager position. He will oversee the shop foreman and take the lead on all thingsmaintenance-relatedforourdivision.CongratsJustin!

Also,we’vebeenbusywithourconsultants;TBRstrategies.Duringarecent 2-week visit, we’ve focused on improving our Planning & Scheduling, and InventoryControleffortswithintheEquipmentDivision.Moredetailstocome!

Lastly, Dave Reed, Manny Valle, and I have begun the certification process to become Certified Storeroom Managers (CSM) through theAmericanReliability&MaintenanceInstitute.

Runway 13-31 Rehabilitation

VENICE, FLORIDA

ThisprojectconsistedoftheMillingof84,000SYandAsphaltOverlayof9,500 tonswhichapproximatelycovered5,000ftofRunwaypavement(150-ftwide) andapplyingapproximately18,000SYofasphaltrejuvenatingsealcoattothe remainingportionsoftherunwayandtaxiwayconnections.Thisprojectalso includedre-markingoftherunway,there-locationoftwoexistinglightedwind cones,andthereliningoftwoexisting30”RCPthatspan600LFcrossingthe runway.

TheVeniceAirportAuthorityandtheEngineerdemandednothingshortof excellencefromourteam.Fueledbydetermination,ourdedicatedAjaxcrewrose tothechallenge,acingtheteststripontheirfirstattempt.Theymeticulously pavedeachphasewithinthesettimeframe,ensuringtheprojectstayedon scheduleandcausedminimaldisruptiontoairportoperations.

Managingtheprojectrequiredcareful attentiontomultiplefactors:various millingandresurfacingdepths,aneagle nest,gophertortoises,areaswith contaminatedsoil,andutilities. Coordinationwascrucialforourdaily operations.ChrisLopez,theonsite superintendent,demonstratedan unparalleledabilityofhandlingthese tasks,ensuringeverythingransmoothly.A substantialamountofworkhadtobe doneatnight.WereliedonMOTforeman JonathanRiveratocoverthenighttime MOTshifts.Bothpavingcrews,ledby ChrisAnceandLeeLamb,playedahuge roleincompletingthepaving.The subcontractorswehadonsiteincluded CMSConcrete,WPMSouthern,American InfrastructureServices, McSheaContracting, SouthernStripingSolutions, FloridaGuardrailand TrafficControlProducts.

ST. PETERSBURG, FLORIDA

Wekickedoffour300-dayproject along5thAveNinPinellasCountyin January2024.Thescopeofthis projectincludesinstalling7 signalizedcrosswalks(14drilled shafts),sidewalkreplacement, minordrainageimprovements,and millingandresurfacing.Likemost signalprojects,thisonehasnot beenwithoutitschallenges.From theutilityconflictswiththedrilled shaftstoafailingdrainagesystem, andacontractorfromtheUWS hittingawaterline,project superintendentJoeyDesariohas managedtokeepthisprojecton trackandmovingintheright direction.ArgentinaBryant,ourMOT Foreman,hasdoneanamazingjob jugglingalloftheAJAXand subcontractors’laneclosures.On anygivenday,shecouldhave5-6+ laneclosurestosetupand maintain,while alwayslookingaheadat what’stocome.Weareon tracktocompletethisjob fortheFDOTin November2024.

Cypress Gardens Blvd and US-17

WINTER HAVEN, FLORIDA

ThisprojectwidenedturnlanesalongUS-17andCypressGardensBlvd, improvingtrafficflowinoneofWinterHaven’sbusiestintersections.

Thescopeofworkincludes:millandresurfaceroadway,drainage improvements,turnlanewidening,concreteseparatoradditions,trafficsignal withimprovedtiming,gravitywall,andsidewalk.

PLANTS ARE PRODUCING

Inthesecondquarterof2024,we continuetoproduceathighrates.This isgreatforbusinessbutchallengesus tomeetproductionschedulesforour Ajaxpavingcrewsandoutside customers.Highproductionratesalso pushmaintenancereliabilityofthe asphaltplantcomponents.Tocombat prematurecomponentfailuresthat leadtobreakdowns,theplantsdivision hasbeguntorolloutastructured preventativemaintenanceprogram. Weaimtoreducebreakdownsby inspectingplantcomponentsand findingneededrepairsbeforeafailure occurs.

Whilemostofourplantsalreadyhave aninspectionroutine,wecannot expectthesameroutinewillbe sufficientwhenrunningplantsatan unprecedentedproductionrate.Thisis whereastructuredpreventative maintenanceprogramcanhelpus.As weapproachourJulyshutdown maintenanceperiod,wehave introducedthefirstpreventative maintenanceinspectionsateach asphaltplant.Afterourshutdown periodconcludeswewillkickoffthe thirdquarterof2024withafull inspectionscheduleateachplant.

HereatAjaxPavingourstrongestasset hasalwaysbeen(andcontinuestobe) ouremployees.Idonotdoubtthatour AsphaltPlantsTeamwillsucceedat makingourasphaltplantsmorereliable throughastructuredinspection program,continuedhardwork,and involvementfromtheentireplants divisionstaff.

TheITdepartmentachieved significantimprovementinthe networkinfrastructureand securityoftheorganizationin Q2,bycompletingseveral projectsandinitiatives,suchas networkupgradesatall locationstoincreasespeedand redundancyaswellas completingourMFAsystem implementation.TheIT departmentfacedseveral challengesanddifficultiesin implementingtheseprojects andinitiatives,whichrequired overcomingtechnical, operational,andhumanfactors. TheITdepartmentwillcontinue tomonitorandevaluatenetwork infrastructureandsecurityand seektofurtherenhanceand optimizetheminthenext quarterandbeyond.

AJAX WARRIORS

The Warriors continue to strive towards improving the wellness and Mental Health of Ajax Paving. As we stand, we have 46 members that have undergone our training. Additionally, we have over 120 Ajax employees that have gone through the VitalCog Suicide Intervention training focusing on assisting people through suicidal crisis situations. At the end of 2024, we will be moving the Ajax Warrior Board to 3 new employees. The positions are Chairman, Vice Chairman, and Secretary. We are actively taking applications for these positions and will select the new Board in the upcoming months. During the final months of 2024, we will be transitioning the roles to the new staff. I’dliketogiveaspecialthankstoMandy Kustra and Jamie Simmons who have worked diligently beside me on the board As always, remember that the Warrior group is here for all employees and any personal struggles they might be dealing with. Together, we will continuetodevelopaworkenvironment that supports the idea that it is OK to discuss personal struggles, fostering a closercommunityandworkfamily.

Thisquarter,WomenRaisingtheBarhas activelyparticipatedinthecommunity.At AllFaiths,weassembled"backpacks"filled withnutritiousandchild-friendlyfood items.Thesebackpacksaredesignedto providestudentswithessentialsnacks duringweekendsandholidays,ensuring theyhaveaccesstofoodevenoutsideof schoolhours.

WealsospentaSaturdaymorningatThe TwigwarehouseinVenice.Asvolunteers wespendtimesortingdonationsand preparingthemtobestockedinthe boutiqueslocatedinVeniceand Bradentonforthechildrentocomeshop.

Weareexcitedtoannouncethatwehave partneredwithGirlScoutsofWestCentral Florida(Citrus,Hernando,Hillsborough, Marion,Pasco,Pinellas,PolkandSumter County)toofferourRockstoRoadspatch program.Throughthisprogramwewillbe abletohelpgirlsgaininsightsintothe constructionindustryandrelatedfields. WomenRaisingtheBarwillbe participatingattheGirlScoutFestin Septemberfortheopportunityto collaboratewiththelargestorganization forgirlsintheworldwithaccessto resourcesonleadershipdevelopment,

healthyliving,team building,outdoorskills, science,technology, engineering,andmath.
