In addition, Supervisors to follow our “Take 5 Rule” each day to familiarize yourself and employees of the task and dangers at hand. Make sure everyone on the job knows the Internal Traffic Control Plan for the shift and implements the details of the plan.

LEADERSHIP This past year our leadership has accomplished some tough and lofty goals. Vince Hafeli has been the leader in getting the word out Nationwide about addressing Suicide in the Construction Industry. He has traveled and spoke to many groups and has raised a new attitude from business owners to make a difference in their own companies and I believe he is winning this battle.

Change is happening here at Ajax in this regard. Duncan McKillop our Government Estimator has taken on the responsibility of recruiting and training our employees to be “Ajax Warriors”. He has developed a program to teach our folks how to handle situations where an employee is having thoughts of suicide. Help is there and this group will make a difference and possibly save a life.

I am personally very proud of Vince and Duncan, congratulations.

GOING THE EXTRA MILE Our “Women Raising the Bar” group also is making a huge difference in showing students, scouts, and the community that our business is not all just made up of tough men.

The Ajax women have made an impact within our company and outside our company.

I could not be more proud and excited to see how they generate such interest in our business of road construction by women looking for options in the work world.

Continuing this effort is important if we want to find top quality people. Mandy Kustra our Safety Director, and Jamie Simmons or Credit Manager have been the leaders of this group, and I want to thank them for this great effort.

TOP EQUIPMENT Manny Valle is another shining star who is taking our Total Process Reliability (TPR) program personal. His work and those of many are making a difference.

Operator care has always been the most important factor and I can see continuous progress in that regard.

Claire events continue to be awesome, fun, and the outcome of the equipment has been of high quality.

Congratulations to all of you who have had the opportunity to be involved in a Claire Event. Let us all work to keep our equipment in top condition and the envy of many.

I have been on a nationwide mission this year to change our industry and could not have done it without the Ajax family. ” -Vince Hafeli, President I owe a huge thank you to 497 people. Why? I have been on a nationwide mission this year to change our industry and could not have done it without the Ajax family. All of you have covered for me in my absence, so thank you.

I say this year; however, the mission and change began on January 3, 2022, at our Safety Day meeting. That is the day I stood before you and said that we as an organization would begin addressing mental health and suicide at Ajax.

Why would we do that?

Because of Mark Kersey, myself, and the others who have had mental, personal, and workrelated struggles.

What are the statistics?

•

The rate of suicide is highest in the middle-aged white male.

•

In 2021, men died by suicide 3.9 times more than women.

•

On average there are 132 suicides per day or one every 11 minutes.

•

White males account for nearly 70% of suicide deaths in 2021.

•

Firearms accounted for 54% of all suicide deaths.

the why In the construction industry, we lose 2 to 3 workers each day to job-related injuries. In that same industry, we lose 10 to 15 workers to suicide.

Ajax has long promoted worker physical safety.

However, how can you be physically safe if you are struggling mentally? If your head is not in the game, you cannot be physically safe for yourself or those around you.

Mental struggles lead to decreased productivity, increased conflict with coworkers, near hits, incidents, and injuries, decreased problem-solving ability, increased tardiness, and absenteeism.

I myself was suicidal in 2007.

Why do I tell you that? Am I proud of it? No. However, it is part of who I am.

I share that with you so that you see me as no different than you. I woke this morning and put one leg at a time into my jeans then pulled on my boots and went to work, just like you.

We all have had or will have struggles in our lives at one time or another. How you deal with those struggles is the game changer.

From 1989 to 2021, I was tough, macho, and not going to share my feelings, emotions and struggles with anyone. That is what my father taught me to do and as a kid growing up in the 60s and 70s, that is what we were told was expected of the “man of the house.”

Shame on me for being so weak that I did not talk to anyone about my struggles, not even a friend or spouse.

We all have had or will have struggles in our lives at one time or another. How you deal with those struggles is the game changer. promoting change What have I done in my absence while you were covering for me?

I have presented in person to over 10,000 people this year around the nation on this topic.

I have lobbied in Washington, D.C. to gain funding for the new national suicide helpline number, 988. This number is in jeopardy of going away due to inadequate funding.

In Florida, we brag about the state of our economy and the size of our state budget, however, we have not yet funded the 988 number.

I was able to complete my research on Suicide in the Construction Industry at the University of South Florida. I defended my research to my dissertation committee on August 18, so the next time you see me, you now can call me Dr. Hafeli. That feels really uncomfortable. You have always called me Vince, and that is who I still am.

The only difference is that I now want to change Ajax and our National Industry in accepting us for who we are and where we are on a day when we are struggling.

My promise to you is that when I am struggling, and I still do on occasion, I will share it so you can be there for me.

My ask for you is that you do the same so we can all be there for you. As I said, I have not done all of this alone.

annual suicide walk in Sarasota.

For those who do not already know him, I would like to introduce you to Duncan McKillop. Duncan has taken charge in leading the Ajax Warriors forward. For those who do not know, the Warriors are a group of employees who are certified as Mental Health First Aid Responders to assist you in navigating struggles and resources.

In the near future, Duncan will be certifying a large number of employees through the Vital Cog program.

There are a few things happening that should relieve your mental stress: • In my 21 years with Ajax, we have the largest tonnage and man-hour backlog that I have seen.

• We/you have a phenomenal group of young to middleaged leaders set for the future.

• We are financially sound, should there ever be a recession.

• We have state-of-the-art maintained equipment.

•

We are replacing the Port Manatee asphalt plant in December preparing us for the 35 years at that location.

• We have signed a lease and are working to construct our own aggregate terminal at Port Red Wing to better control our future needs.

All I can tell you is that you work for one heck of a company, with great leadership and ownership. If you don’t believe me, ask some of those around you who came from our competitors.

In closing, I look forward to leading each and every one of you for several years to come.

INNOVATION The other day, I was told that innovation is more than just technology. So what is it?

And what does it mean to Ajax?

Innovation in construction refers to adopting and applying new ideas, methods, technology, materials, and processes to improve performance, sustainability, and costeffectiveness. Most of the innovations we see in our industry derive from challenges such as cost overruns, project delays, quality issues, and the demand for more efficient and sustainable infrastructure.

Asphalt pavement has always been a popular choice for road construction and maintenance due to its flexibility, durability, and ease of repair. As an industry, we must continuously challenge ourselves to innovate to meet evolving demands.

As Ajax strives to stay at the forefront of our industry, we’ll continue to innovate our practices. We must focus our energy on the correct areas. Here are some critical aspects for us to look at as our industry evolves: advanced materials, safety and quality assurance, cutting-edge equipment, sustainability,

best paving practices, data analytics, digital project management tools, digital field technology, and artificial intelligence.

advanced materials Asphalt materials have evolved fast, from using recycled materials to introducing warm mixes.

The industry has always been moving forward, and innovation seems to gravitate to the materials.

To improve pavement performance, we’ve used modified binders, such as polymer, to enhance overall pavement durability, increasing resistance to cracking, rutting, and moisture damage. There are many new additives today that claim

SAFETY, QUALITY, ASSURANCE better performance.

Safety and Quality assurance remains paramount to our business. Innovation in safety and quality control processes can significantly reduce accidents and rework.

We must stay on top of the latest wearable safety measures and keep in close contact with the FDOT to improve work zone safety—using advance-warning systems, motors awareness systems, off-duty officers, and crash attenuators are innovative ways to enhance safety on a project.

CUTTING EDGE EQUIPMENT Cutting-edge equipment is purchased every year. We continue to reinvest in the company’s assets, which include the best equipment on the market.

We have great partnerships with equipment manufacturers, continuously innovating their products to perform better for us on the road. Remember that giving them good feedback helps them with future innovations.

Associations like the National Asphalt Pavement Association spend much time and effort researching and strategizing ways to reduce our carbon footprint and become more sustainable.

Their finding will help the industry, but the implementation will fall on the individual asphalt contractors.

As a member of NAPA and similar associations, we can leverage this knowledge for the future of our business.

ESTIMATING

“We worked as a team - government, private and design-build - to get the job done.”

Christie Alvaro, Director of Estimating people first approach Last year, Ajax weathered one of the largest and most devastating hurricanes in recent history. The storm had as many business impacts as it did personal impacts in each of our areas.

Ajax was able to respond to emergency bids by pooling our resources across the company and enlisting the help of the design build staff to prepare bids during the storm.

These emergency contracts were vital to the health of our company over the last year. Task Work Orders took the place of resurface work which had to be cancelled or delayed until agencies could solve immediate dangers.

Our staff worked nights and weekends buying out contracts to keep pace with the work as our crews were on call for these contracts.

As the year progressed, bid opportunities abounded as the State of Florida received and prioritized funding for Infrastructure.

Projects were released in waves with many FDOT contracts accelerated and Ajax was able to pick up work that filled our backlog across all four areas.

To cover all of these bids, our staff had to flex and pool our manpower resources across geographic boundaries to ensure full coverage in the bidding process. We worked as a team government, private and design-build - to get the job done.

Looking at the numbers as I write this article – we are sitting on a $571 million-dollar backlog with over 1.6 million tons of asphalt to pave. We should all be proud of the jobs we have the opportunity to build over the next few years. The future will definitely be riding on Ajax in Southwest Florida.

Randy Moore started with Ajax as a Superintendent in September of 2022.

As the Lake wales area continued to grow, there was a need recognized for a private estimator in the area to grow and expand our reach into the commercial market. Randy took the challenge and moved in to this position in 2023. Randy’s first jobs will be paving this fall and we look forward to many more successful jobs in his future.

Jessica Canon joined our team as an Estimating Assistant in February. She works in the main office alongside Kara ordering, preparing and submitting bid documents. Jessica provides support to both the government and private estimators. She has already become an impactful and integral part of our team. We are lucky to have her.

We had substantial achievements that underscore our financial strength and unwavering stability.

Here are some of the key highlights:

OVERALL REVENUE GROWTH In 2022, Ajax experienced an exceptional 24% increase in overall revenues over 2021, which is a testament to our strategic financial management.

Team Update: Our team welcomed four new members this past year. Ruth Brick joined us as our payroll coordinator. Amy Pribnow and Jennifer Richey joined our EEO team, and Jericha Gervais is our new AR Coordinator. We are excited to have these great additions to the team and look forward to their future success. We are also extremely proud of Ginger Johnson and her promotion from Assistant Controller to Controller. Ginger is an integral part of the team and has been with us since 2009.

Another year in the books for Area 1, and another year of changes and additions to the Team. I first want to thank the folks of Area 1 for all your hard work and dedication this year.

Without you all, none of our success would be possible.

Some of the changes include adding a third paving crew for the majority of the year, several new Foremen, new Project Manager, a new Project Engineer, and several quality additions to the field with Operators and Truck Drivers.

proud promotions I would like to highlight several of the personnel changes in the field and office here in Area 1. Wes Moore and Pete Walker were promoted to Grade Foreman and MOT Foreman.

Both have worked hard as members of their crews and are looking to grow and produce as Foremen. Jason Wolfe was

hired as a Paving Foreman for our third paving crew. Jason was once a Paver Operator for Ajax and brings years of experience to the Team. We are very proud of what Jason has accomplished this year and look forward to his continued leadership in the field. Raymond James was hired earlier in the year as a Project Superintendent and has been a tremendous asset to the I-75 Widening over Manatee River Project with the Ajax-Leware Joint Venture.

In the office, Sam Loumani was promoted to a Project Manager and Sutida Nimcharoen was hired as a Project Engineer after obtaining her Civil Engineering Degree from UCF. These new faces and positions have contributed to our success and I look forward to what the future brings for them.

US 301 The scope of this project was extensive, encompassing various crucial components. It involved widening the road, milling and resurfacing the existing surface, addressing drainage issues, installing sidewalks and curbs, enhancing ADA accessibility at intersections, introducing new roadway signs, handrails, signalization, and lighting.

The project was executed with dedication by an Ajax team, which included key personnel such as Chris Stewart as Superintendent, Phil Nace as Grade Foreman, Jason Wolfe as Paving Foreman, and Tony Tovar responsible for Quality Control.

In addition to the Ajax team, several subcontractors

contributed their expertise to the project, including MSB Services, Gator Grading and Paving, A Custom Curb, Acme Barricades, Arrive Alive Traffic Control, Ongrade Contracting, McShea, Lomski Engineering, and Delamere Industries.

What truly set this project apart was the innovative approach taken to optimize the design and construction process.

Chris Stewart, the project’s Superintendent, recognized the potential for cost savings and efficiency improvements before commencing construction. Instead of adhering strictly to the original design, a Comprehensive Scope Improvement (CSI) was proposed to the department. This entailed milling the cross slope changes into the inside shoulders, rather than a complete rebuild, along with similar modifications to the turn lane reconstructions.

This initiative resulted in substantial savings of $84,000, shared equally between Ajax and the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) after factoring in engineering costs.

The year has been a quick start, fast summer, and a grind until the end of the year. Area 2 has had a lot of success in many different facets of what we do.

We have brought on many new people this year, and with the help of the people that know our culture, continue to promote the core values of the company. On the flipside, a lot of new faces bring new ideas, thoughts, and perspective to what we do and can build upon.

new positions This year we have also created a new position for the area, which was the Paving Superintendent. Robby Popielarz was promoted that position from his experience as Paving Foreman in Area 1.

He started with the company 20 years ago as a laborer and work up through the ranks and we are excited to have him on board with his knowledge and expertise.

The success this year does not come easy. Many projects have been difficult and we have persevered and saw them through to completion.

Punta Gorda Airport Taxiway came with many challenges and those challenges were met

FORT MYERS PROJECT SPOTLIGHTS “Through the combined impact of incentive-driven excellence and the innovative scheduling and phasing approach, the project team transformed an estimated 8.8% profit into an impressive 15%.”

I-75 COLLIER COUNTY The I-75 Collier County project was a remarkable construction endeavor that addressed various critical aspects. With a contract amount of $4,147,475.59 and a substantial tonnage of 10,517, the project scope was comprehensive.

It involved shoulder widening, slope correction, and the milling and resurfacing of 1.5 miles of road, stretching from the Alligator Alley Toll Plaza to Collier Blvd.

The project also encompassed guardrail replacement and the replacement of overhead signs.

A dedicated team from Ajax led the project, including Lee Lamb’s and Chris Ance’s Paving Crew, along with individuals like Alan Risinger, Jon Rivera, Sam Manahov, Tommie Harris, Xavier Donaldson, and Alex Perez, all working diligently in the Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Crews. Ryan McCarthy served as the Superintendent, and the project was managed by Elliot Kresse and Ryan McCarthy.

Collaborating with key subcontractors, the project achieved its unique character.

EHC’s Grade Crews, C.Slagter Construction’s Guardrail Crews, and TCP’s Signage Crews played vital roles in project execution.

What set this project apart was the complexity of the phasing plans and closure restrictions near the Toll Plaza. Working within 1,000 feet of the Toll Plaza was only possible from 10 pm to 6 am, and this window was limited to just three days per week.

To address this challenge, the Project Team developed an accelerated scheduling strategy for guardrail replacement, aptly named “Hell Week 1.0 and Hell Week 2.0.”

During these intensive weeks, the project operated 24 hours a day, from Sunday to to a Friday 24 hours per day to ensure FDOT compliance was met for drop offs and blunt ends.

Lee Lamb’s Crew achieved a 9 out of 10 Individual Ride Incentive on the project.

Due to this incentive coupled with our ability to accelerate the schedule and phasing, the project team turned an estimated 8.8% profit into 15%.

FGCU NORTH VILLAGE LOOP Once again, Ajax secured the subcontracting role for the milling and paving operations in the second phase of the Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) North Village Loop Road, with Wright Construction acting as the Construction Manager at Risk.

Having previously demonstrated our efficiency during the initial phase last year, Wright entrusted us to swiftly and thoroughly complete this subsequent phase.

Initially, this project revolved around a straightforward 53,000

square yards milling and paving operation for interior roadways.

We operated round the clock, milling at night and paving during the day.

As the project progressed, FGCU opted to expand, adding multiple parking areas and road widening tasks. Despite numerous change order requests and negotiations, we readily accepted the additional work, committing the necessary time and workforce to fulfill these new requirements.

Originally contracted for 53,000 square yards of 1-inch mill and pave totaling about 2,900 tons of hot asphalt, Project Name – FGCU NORTH the project evolved VILLAGE LOOP significantly due to Tonnage –6,500 change orders. Ultimately, we milled and paved Scope – Mill and Resurface approximately 111,000 interior roadways, road square yards of roadways and parking lots, laying widening, parking areas 6,500 tons of asphalt.

Despite surpassing the completion date, we had minimal remaining tasks on the punch list, a testament to our thoroughness.

Kudos to Chris Ance and his paving crew for their exemplary work. Mark Slomski’s outstanding quality control management on-site ensured accurate production documentation. The MOT (maintenance of traffic) crews, led by Alan Risinger, Sevdelin Manahov, and Johnathan Rivera, worked tirelessly around the clock. Ricky Helsel, Tommie Harris, and Logan played pivotal roles in ensuring timely and secure completion of the widening tasks.

Garrett Fons deserves appreciation for maintaining seamless operations, while the trucking department ensured efficient truck management.

MESSAGE FROM AREA 3 Area 3 had a successful 2023, completing significant projects in the Tampa Bay area and earning praise for their fieldwork quality. They tackled various tasks, from local roads to intricate bridge paving, with crews excelling in concrete, pipe, and grade work, while employees saw advancements within the company, setting the stage for a promising 2024 focused on continual improvement.

2023 has been another successful year in Area 3. Our team finished and started several high-profile jobs in the Tampa Bay area and thanks to the product we put out in the field have garnered several accolades from local officials.

The biggest project was the completion of our job at US 301 and Bloomingdale Ave which over the two years of that project nearly every employee in the area worked on in some way.

The Paving and Milling Cleanup Division has seen all types of work this year local roads, Highways, Airports, MacDill Airforce Base, and even a very technical paving job on Bridge approaches on the Veterans

Expressway.

Concrete crews continued to turn out high quality projects with major work for Hillsborough County, Pasco County and the US Coast Guard.

Our Pipe crew has been on several challenging projects and has been very successful at finishing them safely on-time and in budget.

Grade crews have also worked highlighted by projects throughout the area including the Pinellas Bayway. And a big thanks to our MOT crews who have kept all of our Ajax crews safe while doing their work.

Over the past few years

many employees in our Area have seen advancement in the company including laborers to operators, Operators to Foremen, Foremen to Superintendents and Managers.

2024 The outlook for 2024 is good.

TAMPA PROJECT SPOTLIGHTS

Resurface Suncoast (SR 589) As part of a pilot program initiated by FDOT Turnpike, a $4.3 million resurfacing project was carried out on an 11-mile stretch of the Suncoast Parkway. Instead of the typical ¾” placement, the project placed a 1” lift of FC-5.

The project began in October 2022 and was completed

by February 2023, taking approximately 20 paving shifts to complete the 16,000-ton placement.

Throughout the project, the crew faced various challenges,

such as aggregate shortages and cold weather, which made it difficult to place FC-5 at night.

Despite these obstacles, the crews were able to complete the project successfully due to their dedication and hard work.

The project was originally scheduled to be done at night, but after coordination with the Turnpike, it was decided that daytime hours would be safer and more efficient.

McCutcheon’s crew paved an average of over 800 tons daily, and South Florida Milling provided a double mill operation to keep the project moving efficiently.

Alex Perez and James Haywood provided MOT. The job was particularly challenging due to the long distance between exits and the lack of turnaround points, and several full ramp detours were required.

This project’s success was a result of careful planning and communication within various Ajax departments.

The plants/lab, trucking department, construction team, and quality control department were in constant communication to ensure a successful job.

AKCA was our pavement marking partner and was responsible for providing daily temporary striping and thermoplastic upon paving completion.

This project was awarded the ACAF Turnpike Project of the Year Award for 2023 which is a testament to the quality of work carried out by the team.

Hillsborough County Neighborhood Resurfacing Our Hillsborough County Neighborhood Resurfacing contract began in early 2022 and will continue until February 2024, covering all neighborhood resurfacing work in the southern region of Hillsborough County.

To date, 46 projects have been issued under this contract, with a combined contract value of over $15 million.

The average tonnage for these jobs is approximately 1,500 tons, with over 64,000 total tons placed to date. As of September 2023, 42 of the 46 jobs issued have reached substantial completion. Although the projects are technically classified as “neighborhood”

resurfacing, we have been paving everything from neighborhoods, in front of schools, around railroad tracks, business centers, industrial areas, and rural roads. We even had the opportunity to resurface Old US41A, the access road to our very own Plant 6. We are eagerly anticipating the announcement of the next set of projects under this contract.

Due to the nature of these projects, nearly every crew in Area 3 has been involved. All our paving crews, MOT, and concrete crews have participated in at least one project. The projects range in size from one-day mill and pave operations to month-long projects correcting concrete curbs and sidewalks throughout a neighborhood to bring them up to ADA specifications, followed by milling and paving. There have been several projects that required reworking of the base, removal of trees & stumps, and installation of new traffic loops.

Our milling partner for this contract is Turtle Infrastructure Partners. We have been restriping the roads with our subcontractor Bussey, re-

installing hundreds of speed humps with Pavemasters, and installing ADA-detectable warning mats with Rolhard.

Our superintendents, Kaleb McKinniss and John Lake, have led these projects and developed excellent working relationships with the Hillsborough County team.

Working on smaller projects like these oftentimes means bigger headaches, keeping the public happy while working outside their front door. Kaleb and John have done a great job at giving the public a heads-up and resolving issues that may arise.

Keeping track of the paperwork for multiple small projects in a small geographical area can be challenging, but our superintendents, QC, and contract administrators have done an excellent job separating and keeping everything properly accounted for.

Across the board, the project team has knocked this contract out of the park.

AJAX WARRIORS “ I am proud to say that we have been able to grow the Ajax Warrior group to 30 employees with another 15 onboarding.”

The Ajax Warrior group started as an idea by Vince Hafeli and is currently being developed and run by myself with the invaluable help of several others.

The idea behind the program is to provide an internal council in the company to help create a cultural shift in the way Mental Health is viewed, talked about, and handled in our workplace.

The Warriors are taught that we are not here to treat or diagnose individuals, but educate, assist, and encourage them to seek professional and self-help.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING GO A LONG WAY The goal has been to provide education and training to as many people as possible, so that we may provide a safe space for all employees to talk about mental health challenges and suicide crises.

As this is an uncharted venture for Ajax, as well as a new idea within the industry, we find our program to be evolving and changing to best suit the needs of the members and employees.

Because changing cultural norms, preconceptions, and stigmas requires buy in from the members of that culture, The Warriors was designed as, and will remain, a volunteer program.

With around 475 employees at Ajax, we are at nearly a 10% membership rate for the program.

The more members we gain, the increased likelihood that an employee going through a mental health crisis knows one of the Warriors and trusts and respects them enough to reach out confidentially.

CERTIFICATIONS

We currently have two main trainings and certifications that employees can take part in.

The first is the Mental Health First Aid certification. MHFA provides education and skills to help assist others dealing with a mental health crisis. The program focuses on identifying the early/worsening/critical signs and symptoms of mental health struggles, and how to best approach an individual going through one of the stages.

The second is the VitalCog Suicide Prevention training. The VitalCog program was developed

by Dr. Sally Spencer-Thomas and is specifically tailored towards suicide prevention in the workplace.

This program is focused on crisis management of individuals potentially going through thoughts and plans of suicidal action.

The training gives participants the skills and tools to appreciate the critical need for suicide prevention while creating a forum for dialogue and critical thinking about workplace mental health challenges, and by promoting help-seeking and help-giving.

From conversations with other Warriors (and while maintaining employee confidentiality) we have had a lot of positive feedback

about how members have been able to assist and comfort their coworkers.

STREAMLINED COMMUNICATION As 2023 progresses to a close, we carry a continued emphasis on Quality Control (QC) awareness, we continue to invest in our two most valuable assets, our people and our reputation.

We’ve regionalized responsibilities by adding another Quality Control Manager in Tampa to better provide in-house QC management for the Tampa / Lake Wales markets.

This addition will allow each of our QC Manager’s to better manage our QC field inspectors, our construction teams, and our clients.

This approach has allowed us to reconnect with our field teams by spending more time in the field with them and providing training where needed.

better support our construction teams by streamlining our communication flows and having that critical local resource available when necessary.

going THE RIGHT DIRECTION 2023 has also brought growth to our Ajax Quality Control team; growth through headcount and in our craft.

We’ve taken a “back to the basics” approach regarding our daily QC field responsibilities.

This has allowed some of our senior inspectors to mentor and provide critical “real conditions training” to our up-and-coming inspectors.

By partnering with fellow industry leaders and heavy equipment providers to provide specialized quality control training and best practice determinations for our work, we are intentionally placing a direct focus on our Quality Control elements in all crew positions and placement operations.

WORKING AS ONE This year has been an exciting time, especially for me. Growth is not easy by any definition, however, when we work as one team and we’re pulling in the same direction, growth is possible. When we work as one, we win as one.

Our HR department offers a myriad of benefits that extend beyond traditional practices to provide a holistic care approach encompassing physical, mental, and wellness factors.

As such, we continue to conduct on-site annual health screenings and virtual risk assessments, providing personal health information from a health professional utilizing your phone and several computer applications.

This proactive stance encourages employees to become active participants in their health, thus improving their overall well-being.

Communication Communication is another cornerstone of contemporary HR. Enhancements to communication tools have improved the effectiveness of our department.

We are gaining ground with features such as our HR help-line phone number and HR group email.

Both of these have streamlined the process of assisting employees, improving response times and overall efficiency.

SAFETYDAY

2023 Once again, Ajax Paving Industries of Florida kicked off 2023 with our annual Safety Day Meeting on January 3rd where over 450 employees attended at the Bradenton Convention Center.

We started the morning together hearing opening comments from both our CEO Mike Horan and our President Vince Hafeli. As the morning continued, we discussed Ajax’s mental health initiative, asphalt plant safety, and heat stress. These things, as well as the safety year in review and annual video discussing the prevention of run over and back overs was debuted by our amazing safety committee. We wrapped up the morning with service and TPR awards. Thank you to all of our presenters, you did an amazing job.

For the afternoon sessions, we broke into smaller groups in order to discuss topics in better detail. These meetings were attended by all foreman, project superintendents, project managers, and the estimating department.

The CDL breakout took place in the Longboat Key meeting room where the guest speaker, Carl Heinlein from ACIG, spoke on driver safety and responsibility.

There was also a refresher discussion on ITCP (Internal Traffic Control Plans), to ensure our drivers were getting the most out of these important documents.

The management breakout was led by our area Vice Presidents and Construction Managers.

We are proud to offer a wide variety of trainings throughout the year, and it all starts with our annual safety meeting.”

There were four individual table discussions which included ITCP’s and fatality prevention in our work zones, documenting incidents and accidents, review of the site superintendent manual, and how to conduct daily huddles and tool box talks.

ITCP CLASS FOR ACIG MEMBERS On April 25th and 26th of 2023, Ajax Hosted an ITCP (Internal Traffic Control Plan) Class for members of our Insurance GroupACIG. The 2-day interactive class was jammed packed with ITCP topics and attendees learned how to set up an ITCP program including maps from start to finish.

We also had hands on development for ITCP’s for a specific job at each company. Ajax

provided copies of their field guide and everything that has been used over the last 6 years to develop meaningful ITCP’s for Ajax jobs.

This paved the way to great conservation and discussions on this topic. We hope this class helped our fellow insurance members understand the importance of ITCP’s and how they can save lives on jobsites.

Midseason safety meetings were held this summer for all Ajax foreman level and up. Our first meeting was held on June 14th for Area 1 & 2 (Venice & Fort Myers) and our second meeting was held on July 14th for Area 3 & 4 (Tampa & Lake Wales).

We kicked the meeting off with lunch and then discussed what to do if OHSA shows up on our jobsites, heat stress precautions, “see something say something”, and vehicle camera system. Then we reviewed our updated cell phone policy.

The safety department continues to research ways to make our jobsites safer.

We learned during a peer group meeting that Duval Asphalt shared a great idea of adding umbrellas to the back of their foremen trucks to provide an area for rest, water, and shade on jobsites. Ajax has adopted this idea and it has been a welcomed change for our crews to help beat the heat of this past summer. The below wallet card is also a helpful reference on heat

related illness that is issued at orientation and safety day.

Since the heat has been so intense this past summer, Ajax offered our employees many ways to try to beat the heat.

Besides umbrellas, there were 3 different types of hard hat sun shades available, bottled water, along with a variety of electrolyte additives to stay hydrated. There were also 2 different types of cooling towels.

All of these options, along with starting work earlier when possible, rest, water and shade helped our employees get through the summer. Education on heat illness is necessary to keep our employees healthy and safe while at work.

This committee has monthly virtual meetings and quarterly in person meetings that include an onsite tour.

“When we discussed putting an organization together of the Women within Ajax, our mission was to support and encourage the women of Ajax, give back to our community and bring awareness to the career opportunities available to women in the construction industry; but more importantly the roadway industry. ” What a busy year for Women Raising the Bar! We had two very exciting events this past year and you will hear more about each event from members of our executive committee; Director of Estimating Christie Alvaro, Danielle Bentivegna Area 2 Project Manager, Natalie Woody Engineering Manager and Jessica Kiesel Area 1 Project Manager.

Our fall meeting was held on October 27th. We came up with several “getting to know you” questions and put our spin on “speed dating.” We had the chance to talk to different ladies throughout the company and discover a little more about each other outside of work!

Once speed dating was over, we asked all the Project Managers to do a presentation on their projects and tell us a little about their day to day responsibilities.

It was interesting to hear about all that goes on at their projects.

We will continue to do this with other ladies around the company and learn about their roles within Ajax.

SPRING MEETING Our spring meeting was held on March 27th. Andy DeCraene our Executive Vice President of Operations presented on the women that have inspired him throughout his life.

Andy gave us a list of 100 different life values and asked us to select the ones that meant the most to us. We then had to eventually narrow that list down to around 4 core values. It was surprisingly difficult to narrow

our selections down to just the ones that meant the most to us.

It definitely made us think about how we look at life and how those values affect our career decisions.

We also had Susie Ferguson, former ACIG Sr. Claim ConsultantTechnical Claims Mgr. present on the struggles women can face in a male dominated industry.

Susie has been part of the Ajax Family for 25+ years and has presented at each of our annual safety meetings. Susie touched on the struggles she has had in her professional career, and gave all of us ladies tools we can use each day to help bridge the gap for women in a male industry.

Susie, just like your safety meeting presentations, you didn’t disappoint! We greatly appreciate

you coming out of retirement to once again come back to your Ajax family and give a wonderful presentation.

VOLUNTEER EFFORTS All Faith’s Food Bank One of our favorite volunteer events is at All Faith’s Food Bank in Sarasota. We try to volunteer twice a year for their backpack program. Last year we were able to fill around 4,000 backpacks!

This volunteering event is so much fun and we get to help out an amazing organization. Ajax was also All Faiths Food Bank’s Corporate Volunteer Group of the Year for 2022!

We were so honored to receive the volunteer group of the year award and thoroughly enjoyed the volunteer luncheon.

We were humbled by All Faith’s generous words; “Ajax Paving Industries of Florida is an ideal example of a corporate partner who provides support and engages its employees in community service in a variety of ways. In 2022, they planned two group volunteer activities in our warehouse, in which they helped us pack about 2,000 Backpacks of healthy snacks for kids at each session. Throughout the month of December, they also contributed to our ThankFULL Hearts Campaign and set up an online fundraiser among their team to raise $2,424 to provide holiday meals for families in need. They also collected food donations and then hand delivered the items to the Food Bank. Corporate partnerships are such an essential component of ensuring our mission is furthered in the community and

we greatly appreciate the role Ajax Paving Industries of Florida plays in making that possible. We are excited to welcome them back to the warehouse in April for their next team volunteer event.”

Our next volunteer event will be November 7th from 1:30 to 3:00.

rocks to roads On Saturday, January 7th 2023, Women Raising the Bar through a partnership with Girl Scouts of Gulfcoast Florida held a special event for girls earning the Rocks to Roads patch at our Venice Asphalt Plant.

The Rocks to Roads patch program, developed by the Women Raising the Bar Committee at Ajax, provides girls in sixth through twelfth grade an opportunity to learn more about the asphalt industry and the career opportunities it holds for women.

The program guides girls through an educational process in which they learn about asphalt composition, production and quality control.

The girls then complete a series of educational requirements and activities during their troop meeting prior to their visit to Ajax.

The program was developed to meet the national standards of Girl Scouts to discover, connect and take action.

Before the day of the event an ITCP was sent to all who were coming to help with parking and traffic/pedestrian flow.

On the event day, the Girl Scouts began with a safety huddle and distribution of PPE. The onsite event included a tour of the plant, a visit to the testing lab and a visit to the mix development lab.

A hands-on activity provided the girls with a chance to make asphalt cookies which reinforced the role

rocks to roads continued each “ingredient” or aggregate plays in the asphalt mix and how temperature, cooling and rolling aids in the process of compaction.

The day concluded with an all-star panel of Ajax women in construction (Jessica Kiesel, Taylor Shaner, Sharon Russaw and Danielle Bentivegna). They were able to answer a multitude of questions as well as provide insight on how their careers developed over the years.

It was an inspiring day. The girls and their families loved the program and we hope to have ignited an interest in young minds to consider a career in our industry.

This fall, Women Raising the Bar will hold two more Rocks to Roads events for the Girl Scouts of Gulf Coast Florida. The first event will be held at our Plant 2 location on

November 4th and the second will be held again at Plant 1 on November 11th.

We are excited to be in the planning stages with the Girl Scouts of West Central Florida to expand our badge opportunity to a new council based in the Tampa Bay Area. We will be hosting a spring Rocks to Roads event at Plant 7 in Largo. Naturally, we plan to continue adding events, councils and locations to extend our reach and impact in the young community.

Additionally, Girl Scouts of West Central Florida invited us to provide a mentor at their Camp CEO Event held November 17-19 at Camp Wai Lani in Palm Harbor.

We are excited to announce that Natalie Woody will represent us at this event. Natalie will collaborate as a successful community leader with high-school aged girls to develop potential career paths, educational plans, leadership skills

and goal setting that aligns with their interests and talents. We are excited and honored for Ajax to be included in this impactful program.

the twig & fostering feet Women Raising the Bar continues our partnership with The Twig. The TWIG is an organization serving foster children in all of southwest Florida. They operate 2 store fronts (Venice & Sarasota) stocked with new and gently used clothes, shoes and books where any foster child can shop once per month free of charge.

We are passionate about this event because a new pair of shoes provides children the confidence they need to step forward into a promising future. This past Fostering Feet event was June 22, 2023 and with your help we were able to collect 356 pairs of shoes to stock the Venice store front, and raise an additional $1,150 to shop for more shoes. We would like

to give a thank you shout out to Bermont Materials who was our top company donator.

saturdays are for Volunteering Women Raising the Bar also picks 2 Saturdays out of the year to volunteer at The Twig warehouse in Venice to help sort, organize, tag and prepare clothes for display at their store front so foster kids can come in and pick their 7 items each month.

We look forward to some good laughs and camaraderie during this event. The fall warehouse event is on October 14 and we are excited because we get to help sort stuff for Christmas.

We plan on continuing to support this wonderful organization with warehouse volunteer days and the annual shoe drive.

making an impact Riverview High School launched a Construction Technology Program for the 2022-23 school year.

This is a four-year program for 60 students to introduce them to the construction industry, provide hands-on experiences, and facilitate internships, apprenticeships, and jobs locally.

Women Raising the Bar and Riverview High School hosted a field trip visit to our Venice asphalt plant and facilities. During

the several hour tour, students were broken into 3 groups.

Each group had a detailed tour on foot of the asphalt plant which included a visit to the tower so they can witness how Ajax makes asphalt and how trucks are loaded.

Next the group went to the asphalt testing lab to learn about mix designs, testing process and requirements that asphalt must meet to be used on state projects.

Students were able to tour our maintenance garage and get a close up look at the heavy equipment that is used daily in road construction.

They had an equipment rodeo with an opportunity to operate a roller and a mini excavator and move some dirt with the bucket.

Due to the successful field trip mentioned above with the Construction Academy group from Riverview High School, we were invited by the Venice Area Chamber of Commerce to participate in an advisory committee created to begin a similar program at Venice High School for the 2023-2024 school year.

The school district wanted input from local construction businesses on the curriculum, procuring classroom space, and organizing field trips. This was a great opportunity to support students interested in our industry and expose them to career opportunities in the road building business.

TRANSPORTATION

“Ultimately, my goal is to run our trucks day and night, by having enough work, and drivers to make this possible.”

- Rudy Rella, Director of Transportation Allow me to introduce myself. I am Mr. Rudy Rella, the newly appointed Director of Transportation at Ajax Paving Industries.

Coming into Ajax, my initial goals were to stabilize the trucking department’s budget, ensure productive work for our drivers, and recruit new drivers to fill every truck in our fleet while establishing a structured transportation department.

I want to take the time to talk about some changes we’ve made in trucking so far to help accomplish these goals, say thanks to my incredible staff, and highlight my vision for going forward.

During my brief tenure with the Ajax team, We’ve implemented several changes within our trucking department. These changes encompass maintaining a wellmaintained fleet, streamlining the truck scheduling process for operations, and providing our drivers with comfortable and cost-effective apparel.

We have also worked closely with truck manufacturers to design trucks that best fit our needs and help with efficiency and productivity.

Furthermore, we’ve structured a management team to provide communication and guidance in our everchanging industry. Over time, this will significantly improve the functionality of our department.

I would also like to shout out development of personnel, that i believe is of great excellence. The vision is to have the trucking department be a profit center for the company by hauling as much as possible day and night, streaming line billing by leveraging technology, and continuing to develop our team by providing training.

The A-Team set a goal in 2020 to advance our community involvement initiatives by creating Ajax’s “Pave it Forward” program. This program is a multi-faceted approach to giving back to the communities we live and work in – which has a been a guiding principle since 1981.

Feeding Tampa Bay’s ‘Cereal for Summer’ initiative soared to success, all thanks to the incredible dedication of our Ajax Employees! Ajax collected 200 pounds of food which translates to 2,000 meals to our neighbors! Great work A-Team!

Ajax’s Rainy Day Volunteer program proved to be a successful patnership with Habitat for Humanity thanks to our hardworking crews! Great job making a difference!

Our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive was a great success! The total weight of food donated is 7,000 pounds! 22nd Annual Golf Tournament Ajax Paving’s Annual Charity Golf Tournament took place on Saturday, April 22, 2023 at Legacy Golf Club in Sarasota.

With the support from attendees, sponsors and the help of our volunteers, Ajax was able to raise and donate $100,000 to various non-profit organizations throughout Florida’s Gulf Coast.

To dispurse the Annual Charity Golf Tounament donations this year, we cooridated Donation Meet & Greets to make a personal connection with our local organizations and learn more about ways to get involved. Ajax proudly donated to over 30 local organizations.

Ajax Pet Of The Year - Mazie & Merle Ajax hosted ‘Paws for a Cause’ pet photo contest to raise money for Friends of Strays Animal Shelter in St. Petersburg. Friends of Strays was founded in 1978 and is St. Petersburg’s oldest no kill animal shelter.

Ajax donated $20 per photo submitted – and will be donating $1,440.00 thanks to your submissions!
