MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I could not be prouder to lead an organization than I am in leading Ajax. I continue to be amazed by the volume of work we have grown to handle since I landed here in ‘02. During this period, our employee base has increased by 650%.

The growth has been amazing. However, growth can also create obstacles, particularly in the areas of quality and employee stress. In the first quarter of ’24, we had quality issues that created stress. For this reason, the theme for the remainder of ‘24 is to concentrate on what has made us successful over the years. Let’s concentrate on producing a quality mix that meets or exceeds our customers’ expectations when placed.

First Quarter Updates and Future Outlook As we close out the first quarter of 2024, I want to commend each of you for the collective effort in overcoming the daily challenges we face in our industry: changing job site conditions, extended lead time materials, increased volume of work, tight schedules, and staffing, to name a few. These challenges have tested us, and at times tensions get high, but we have stood strong together. I have personally witnessed this and believe these moments, though challenging, will help us build stronger bonds and improve together. My best relationships in the industry have been built from struggles and conflicts. Let’s face it: hard times are where the strongest bonds are built.

Despite these obstacles, we had a great first quarter. Let’s not overlook the positives. The Plants and Construction departments have seen a surge in volume while maintaining a healthy profit margin. The Shop and Trucking departments have demonstrated reasonable cost control by staying within budget while maintaining good service. We still have some work to do, but these are outstanding achievements. Let’s focus on safety and quality.

Our people are our strength. Florida is still in growth mode, with record numbers of people moving to our great state, requiring more infrastructure. We are wellpositioned to take on the workload needed to move Florida forward. Our Ajax team is now standing proud at 535 individuals. This growth reflects our commitment to delivering quality construction projects in our market areas.

Integrating A.I. At Ajax As our world steadily moves into a new era of technological advancement, we here at Ajax Paving remain at the forefront of innovation in the heavy highway construction sector. One of our key initiatives this quarter has been the integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into our daily operations. We have formed a small committee, consisting of Ryan Fulmer, Craig Powers, Andy Decraene, and myself, to investigate how we can leverage the power of AI to enhance efficiency, optimize our routine processes, and empower our workforce to deliver exceptional results.

AI is at the precipice of revolutionizing how we approach tasks such as project planning, proposal writing, resource allocation, quality control and even operating of equipment. If you have been to our Asphalt Plant in Venice recently you may have noticed the loader running without an operator in the seat! This is just the top of the 1st inning of what this technology is capable of and keep in mind that this is not about replacing human expertise but rather supplementing it, allowing our teams to focus on high-value tasks. At the same time, AI handles repetitive or data-intensive processes.

At Ajax, we are enthusiastic about AI because it aligns with one of our fundamental principles and values, Innovation. To be innovative, we must continue learning, adapting, and applying advanced technologies as we help shape the future of heavy highway construction. THE ‘IT FRONTLINES’ As we close out the first quarter, the information technology department has seen notable progress in the areas of end-user training, employee onboarding, and software optimization and integration. In March, representatives from Box held training sessions in Venice, Fort Myers, and Tampa to spotlight new capabilities and enhance existing collaboration tools available within the platform. The sessions were very well received by those in attendance and we hope to engage with our other partners and vendors for additional training throughout the rest of the year. Q1 has also kept the IT department exceptionally busy as we facilitated the procurement and configuration of equipment for a record-setting number of employee onboardings across all four areas. Lastly, as we focus on unlocking the full potential of the Ajax software ecosystem, the Technology Committee along with Jonathan Tiffany have been hard at work to identify areas where processes can be refined and efficiencies can be increased.

Q1 FINANCIALS In the first quarter of 2024, Ajax has seen a commendable uptick in revenue, primarily driven by the successful production of several high-profile projects and an increased demand for asphalt mix at our plants. Additionally, strong cost management strategies have helped maintain healthy profit margins despite inflationary pressures on raw materials and labor costs.

Looking ahead, our focus remains on cost management and operational efficiency. With a robust pipeline of projects and a strong financial foundation, we are poised to capitalize on future opportunities in the heavy highway road construction sector.

ESTIMATING A SUCCESSFUL YEAR AHEAD! The estimating staff had a successful first quarter of 2024. We prepared and submitted over 200 bids across the company this quarter. Project Spotlights

Longboat Key Safety Improvements Design-Build The Longboat Key Safety Improvements Design-Build project for FDOT had an original contract value of $3,990,000 and with positive and negative change orders with design changes is currently totaling around $4,029,000. Natalie Woody coordinated the pre-construction design of the plans with Lighthouse Engineering and FDOT to ensure our design met the requirements that FDOT was looking for. This project’s scope includes improving the safety of pedestrians by adding street lighting, mid-block pedestrian crossings with rapid flashing beacons, ADA improvements, concrete sidewalks, and lastly a mill and resurface at 17 separate locations within a 13-mile stretch of SR789. Ajax crews that played a role in the project: Wally Cabral and Phil Vigo’s crew for paving, Angel Rodriguez’s crew to prep the spreadfooter, Paul Robinson and James Sirmons for concrete sidewalks, and Tommy Richardson for MOT. Subcontractors that played a role in the project are MSB Services, Lovin Construction, Suggs Construction, Rolhard South, Traffic Control Products, and Turtle Infrastructure.

While this project was mainly signal and lighting, there were challenges to be had on Ajax’s part. At the south end of the key due to the soil conditions, a traditional drilled shaft was not able to be constructed for the new pedestrian signal. The designed foundation was an 18’ long x 8’ wide x 3.5’ thick spreadfooter with a 9.5’ long x 4’ diameter shaft in lieu of the 26’ long drilled shaft. The bottom of the spreadfooter was approximately 12-13’ below the natural ground surface.

Prepping for the spreadfooter was the most challenging aspect of the project.

Angel’s crew working with the supervision of Marcos Taguja and Zach Bonynge, completed the excavation and trench box placement while digging around 3 underground power lines, 5 telecommunication lines, and a 4” gas main. The excavated trench bottom was 2-3’ below sea level which kept a steady flow of water coming in the hole and going out of the hole with 2 pumps running. The spreadfooter is complete and we are in the final stages of the project with a minimal punchlist. I believe FDOT, the Town of Longboat Key, the City of Bradenton Beach, and the residents of the entire key are highly satisfied with the project’s result. I want to give a big shout out to the crews and Zach Bonynge for the hard work, thanks for all you do!

U.S. 27 Design Build From Palm Beach Co. Line to Industrial Canal The scope of this project includes overall safety improvements to 2.2 miles of the existing corridor; inside and outside shoulder widening, signage, new guardrail, drainage, and sidewalk realignment. This may be a testament to my age, but do you remember the song “Push it to the Limit” from the movie Scarface? That particular song accurately depicts the essence of the US 27 project. From the beginning, it was an Alternate Low-Cost Bid Design Build job with limited time for both the Design and the Construction phases. Additionally, the project was located on the border of FDOT District 1 and District 5, the furthest East Area 2 has gone before. The project team achieved 26% DBE Commitments by utilizing Ongrade Contracting’s wealth of expertise. As the contract was nearing the finish line, FDOT decided and directed Ajax to widen the southbound outside shoulder to bring the corridor up to current safety specification standards.

With the added widening scope now in play, coupled with the coldest time of year and the sensitivity of the High Polymer Asphalt being placed, proved to be quite challenging. However, as of the beginning of April 2024, the project is scheduled to come in on time.

TAMPA EXECUTIVE AIRPORT

In December of 2023, Ajax broke ground on a $10.3 M project at the Tampa Executive Airport.

The scope of work includes underdrain, grading, milling, paving, upgrading existing lighting, and installing new taxiway signage.

Our biggest challenge on this project has been scheduling due to the job being broken into 11 phases to keep the airport operational. John Lake has done a great job as a superintendent cultivating and growing the relationship not only with subs, but the client.

We plan on finishing this Spencer Wadsworth summer in July.

CIRCUIT FLORIDA The project's distinctive requirements, including three-wide echelon paving, demanded meticulous planning and execution. With our team's expertise and determination, we embraced the challenge head-on. Over a swift 4-day weekend, three paving crews, led by experienced Paving Foremen, Miguel Perez, Jose Gonzalez, and Ryan McCutcheon, worked in synchrony to accomplish the task.

A noteworthy aspect of this project was the formulation of the paving mix. Our team, leveraging the highest standard of polymer binder, meticulously designed the mix to meet the project's specifications for the final layer. We are immensely proud of our team's dedication and professionalism throughout the project, and we look forward to building on this success in the future.

PLANTS 2024 has kicked off on a promising note, with some of our plants operating at near capacity. While this growth is exciting, it brings forth new challenges. Foremost among these challenges is the necessity for constant planning and communication to meet the daily demands and ensure seamless supply to all our customers. With plants operating at such high demand levels, strategic forecasting and scheduling are imperative to stay ahead of the curve. In line with our commitment to supporting this growth, we’re investing in enhancing our infrastructure. This year, we have several plant upgrades planned. Plant 6 in Tampa is set to benefit from the minds blending system, while Plant 7 in Largo will see improvements with the upgraded baghouse, enhancing air quality and operational efficiency.

Looking ahead to December, we’re excited to announce plans for installing a new, higher-capacity drum at Plant 1 in Venice, boosting our output capacity.

Additionally, seizing an opportunity, we’ve purchased three new silos with a slate conveyor, eight new cold feeders, a new rap feeder, and a new baghouse at a discount price. These components will primarily be installed at Plant 8 in Lake Wales, aiding it in meeting its high demands. These upgrades underscore our dedication to staying at the forefront of the industry, ensuring the delivery of top-quality products to our customers. As we navigate the opportunities and challenges of continued growth, our focus remains on producing high-quality asphalt, maintaining operational excellence, and upholding our commitment to customer satisfaction.

QUALITY IS UNDER CONTROL Overall, we have added a few new hires and continue to grow our Quality Control team throughout the company. The future looks bright as we make advances towards uniting departments, training, focusing on communication, and a back-to-the-basics approach that keeps us rowing in the same direction. Areas 3 and 4 have had some very productive Quality Control training sessions, which included the Project Managers, Project Superintendents, and support staff. We have had consistent growth in enhancing our field and lab QC technicians’ knowledge base and continue to keep improving our communication by relaying information promptly between the Field and Lab.

With enhanced communication, we have had increased success on all our projects. To highlight a few of these projects, in Area 3, the PIE Cargo Apron Airport, and in Area 4, the US 27 Design Build, everyone involved worked incredibly well together and Ajax has provided a great product to our clients. In Area 1, the Venice Airport (Runway 13-31 Rehabilitation) where newly promoted foreman Phil Vigo and our long-time QC technician Chris Deese led the charge of milling and resurfacing Runway 13-31.

Aside from our Department work, making local customers happy has been a staple that Ajax prides itself on. Whether the job is out on Interstate 75 or in a local neighborhood, attention to quality is what sets us apart from our competitors. In Area 2, the US-41 project in Naples, every LOT had a CPF of 100+. While performing an “end of project” walk-through with the Department’s Bituminous Production Coordinator, Project Administrator, and Resident Asphalt Coordinator, they all mentioned that it is the BEST FC-5 job that they have seen done in over a year. Additionally, the City of Fort Myers project on Forum Blvd. started clean and efficient and did not look back. This was one of the best-looking jobs to come out of Area 2 in our 1st Quarter of the year.

OUR EQUIPMENT DIVISION IS ON THE MOVE This new year has brought exciting opportunities and challenges for Ajax’s Equipment Division. We would first like to recognize the retirement of Charles Lindsey, our lead mechanic in Area 3, and his 14 years of service. We appreciate his hard work and dedication over the years, and he will be greatly missed!

Next, one of our biggest (yet exciting) challenges is keeping up with the growth of Ajax. New equipment is constantly trickling in, and preparations are being made for adding new paving crews. From Dave Reed & Luke Senko ensuring that our parts are in stock and ready to go, to Eric Delaney & Justin Scharping connecting the logistical dots to ensure everything happens on schedule. Adriana Rahe also continues to lead by example through her dedication to TPR and her involvement in Women of Asphalt. It’s a total group effort. We are also very thankful for our mechanics as they work extremely hard to keep our fleet running.

It’s no secret that our field crews are working more than ever.

BOTTOM LINE: AJAX IS ON THE MOVE, AND OUR EQUIPMENT DIVISION IS ANSWERING THE CALL AND FIGHTING TO KEEP THE COSTS DOWN.

TPR IMPROVEMENTS TPR has gotten off to a great start and we have made some tremendous improvements that are helping to enhance the performance and reliability of our fleet as well as the safety of all of our employees. For starters, not only do we now have all new team leads and several new team members, but we have provided formal training from TBR Strategies for all TPR teams and for myself as a team leader. There will be even more training very soon but this certainly helps us in going forward with much more confidence and skill.

CLAIRE/EIT TEAM

Headed up by Colton Carter, the team has successfully sponsored and completed its first Area 1 CLAIRE event and they did a beautiful job. The event went smoothly, the team members learned a lot and we even came up with some very valuable suggestions for improving the performance and reliability of the featured broom tractor. This was also the best turnout that we had in a very long time.

Our RCA team is led by Elliott Kresse and has been completely re-staffed with all new team members representing each of our 4 areas. All team members were trained, will continue to meet and train as needed, and are now awaiting their first major assignment.

OPERATOR CARE TEAM

The Operator Care team, headed up by Adriana Rahe, has created a training schedule for all of our areas and is continuing to push forward with our dedicated field and shop training programs. Also, operator care is still in the process of replacing all of our old paper operator care standards with and new QR code sticker that any employee can access and even save to their phone for personal reference.

AUDIT TEAM

Our auditing team, led by Randy Moore, has created a completely new scheduling system for all areas, changed the audits from semesters to trimesters, and is currently in the process of changing our entire scoring system to provide even more accurate reporting. This is already proving to show a dramatic effect on our scoring reliability, efficiency, and speed.

Starting in the second trimester, it will improve even further.

HOW’S TRANSPORTATION DOIN’?

In the transportation world, always come to work with a smile (does not mean that it will last all day LOL). We are expanding our trucking department team a little. Anna Koch joined us back in February of this year as our Accounting Assistant. We have bought six new dump trucks as well, getting new equipment is always exciting. As the year goes on, we are planning on expanding to move material.

AJAX WARRIORS The Warriors are proud to announce that we are up to 46 members. We have been diligently recruiting new members and have made significant headway in recruiting more field employees. We are close to a 10% saturation rate of total employees. Every new member we gain increases the likelihood that someone who might be struggling knows one of the Ajax Warriors enough to reach out to them in a time of need. As we move forward, we are setting our 2024 goals for 20% (or around 100) employees to be a part of the Ajax Warriors. We are actively taking applications for a Vice Chairman and a Secretary to run a 2-year term for the Warriors. At the end of the 2 years, we will hold another round of applications and interviews to select the incoming Board.

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL HIKE FOR HOPE IN THE BOOKS! On April 20th, Ajax, in partnership with other industry peers, and the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention put on its Second Annual Construction Hike for Hope.

At locations in Jacksonville, Panama City, Tampa, Fort Myers, Pembroke Pines, and Orlando, the Construction Industry banded together at local parks to talk about the epidemic that is suicide in construction. We shared stories, talked about the risk factors that cause the high suicide rates, and opened a conversation to let people know that it is OK to say you are Not OK. When all was said and done, we had over 555 participants, and have raised over $200,000 and counting. The funds will be used by AFSP to continue to train people in suicide intervention techniques, as well as other programs that they offer. The outpouring of commitment and dedication by those involved shines a light on a dark place and allows us to break the stigma that we cannot discuss our mental health.

We hope to see everyone again next year as we expand, grow, and spread this message of hope.

WOMEN RAISING THE BAR Women Raising the Bar organized a self-defense class for our fall meeting, where Emmanuel Alves from Team Alves Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came to Ajax and demonstrated various techniques to protect ourselves. It was an enjoyable experience as we practiced together and learned some new moves. Emmanuel Alves was an excellent instructor, addressing all our queries. We are considering inviting him for future classes as well!

INCASE YOU MISSED SAFETY DAY Ajax started off the new year by hosting Safety Day on January 3rd, which was attended by more than 500 employees. The event began with a breakfast and the Star-Spangled Banner, performed by Eddie Purnell, one of our talented A-Team members. Mike Horan, CEO, addressed the crowd with opening remarks and then engaged select members of the audience in a safety knowledge test, rewarding those who answered correctly with cash prizes. Mickey Cox provided information about the latest developments in plant operations, while HR presented an overview of the available benefits and insurance choices. The safety department covered topics on workers’ compensation, general liability, and auto accidents. They also presented our personal protective equipment (PPE) program and the new safety whistles. Bob provided a report on near-miss incidents, and then the Safety Committee was introduced, followed by the screening of this year’s safety video. The importance of Safety Technology was highlighted, specifically the Samsara vehicle cameras, which have improved driving habits and protected the company in accident situations. The morning concluded with the recognition of service awards. Safety Day at Ajax was a day of camaraderie, achievements, and a glimpse into the future of the company.

We had 24 employees that earned $50 for successful completion of the challenge and 17 with a perfect score who will have an opportunity to win an extra $100, $75, or $50 in a drawing.
