New York Avenue Sculpture Project Larger-than-life sculptures by internationally renowned Polish artist Magdalena Abakanowicz are now on view as part of the New York Avenue Sculpture Project, the only public art space featuring changing installations of contemporary works by women artists in Washington, D.C. and organized by the National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA). The Sculpture Project illustrates the museum’s long-term commitment to the artistic beautification of New York Avenue, fostering a vibrant new identity for the neighborhood just east of the White House. It features figurative

works, monumentally-scaled, of grouped human figures and birds in flight that exemplify issues universal to humankind: the power of nature, the force of destruction and the resiliency of hope.

A Phoenix Rises Rebirth of DC’s National Theatre

by Kathleen McDonough Legend has it that the mythical bird, Phoenix, never dies, although it must periodically undergo a period of renewal in order to be born anew. Out of its own ashes a new phoenix will always arise, young and strong, flying far ahead, continually scanning the landscape for that which is worthy.

So it is with DC’s National Theatre, where today a new history is springing out of the old for this legendary theatrical venue.

ot every visitor to Washington DC realizes that in addition to being the country’s political capital this city is also a vibrant cultural capital, with a theater heritage almost as old as the nation itself: the architectural designs presented to President George Washington in 1791 for the new capital city not only included plans for a “congressional house” and “presidential palace”, but also the prominent placement of “playhouses” along its grand avenues. Now, nearly 180 years after its own founding in December 1835— and in almost continuous operation ever since—National Theatre is still located at its original site just three blocks from the White House and continues to serve as the “presidents’ playhouse”, having entertained nearly every Chief Executive since Andrew Jackson.

Over the decades, National Theatre has earned a unique place in both the historical and theatrical records, having played host to a multitude of memorable theater evenings, including, on April 14, 1865, attendance by 12-yeary old Tad Lincoln at a performance of Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp where he learned of his father’s tragic assassination at the hands of failed actor John Wilkes Booth just blocks away at Ford’s Theatre. But thankfully the National’s overall history is far more cheerful, as it’s been a witness and contributor to some of the American musical theater’s watershed moments, having hosted the pre-Broadway premieres of three acclaimed classics: Show Boat, Hello, Dolly! and West Side Story. Along with these and many other memorable productions, some of the great names of stage and screen have graced National Theatre’s stage, including Will Rogers, Rex Harrison, Helen Hayes, Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, James Earl Jones, Eartha Kitt, Sir Ian McKellen, Rita Moreno, Sir Laurence Olivier, Debbie Reynolds, Chita Rivera, George C. Scott and Robert Redford.

Although in recent years National Theatre may have been under-utilized, its 2012 reorganization under the new direction of Jam Theatricals (a large Broadway presenting/producing company partnering with SMG to form the National Theatre Group) is proving that this theater is once again ready to fly toward a bigger and brighter future and reestablish itself as a formidable presence in the DC theater scene for event musicals and other popular stage offerings.

In 2013, the National took a giant step toward revitalization by undergoing its first refurbishment

in more than 30 years while also playing host to the world premiere and pre-Broadway engagement of If/Then (starring Idina Menzel in a show which continues to flourish on Broadway) along with acclaimed revivals of The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess and West Side Story.

The National’s new team, expertly guided by Jam Theatricals President Steve Traxler, is fully committed to the theater’s rejuvenation, and as Mr. Traxler recently commented, “Our goal at National Theatre is to reestablish the prominence of this great Broadway touring house that’s been both rich in its historical presence within our nation’s capital as well as significant as a footprint in the world of theater for many decades. Looking back on our first season (2013-2014), we were able to present the world premiere of If/Then and the highly prestigious – and only area appearances – of the Tony® Awardwinning revivals of Porgy and Bess and West Side Story, as well as crowd pleasers Mamma Mia, Stomp and Blue Man Group.”

Regarding the new 20142015 season, Mr. Traxler further explained, “With our current season at the National, we’ve once again opened on a very exciting note, with the official launch of the 30-plus city, North American tour of the world-wide smash hit, Dirty Dancing – The Classic Story On Stage.

The season concludes with Tom Stoppard’s Tony Award® winning existentialist comedy “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead”.

A National Historic Site, Ford’s Theatre is the infamous location of President Abraham Lincoln’s assassination by actor John Wilkes Booth in 1865. Today, Ford’s is a working theater that celebrates the legacy of the 16th President and explores the American experience through theater and education, particularly through the creation of the Lincoln Legacy Project, a multiyear effort dedicated to exploring issues of social justice and the ideals of equality for which Abraham Lincoln stood. The 2014-2015 season will include mainstage productions of “Driving Miss Daisy”, the return of one of DC’s favorite actors, Edward Gero, as Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol”, the world premiere of “The Widow Lincoln” and an epic, concert-style musical, “Freedom’s Song: Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War”, inspired by the words of Lincoln and those who lived through the Civil War.

Virginia wines have been poured at White House State Dinners and were served at the British Embassy to celebrate the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Duchess Catherine. Even renowned wine writer Oz Clarke has lauded Virginia vintages.

The building was named for its 1796-1808 operator, Englishman John Gadsby. Accessible by wooden footbridge just off the George Washington Memorial Parkway, Theodore Roosevelt Island is an oasis of calm in the city. It

KOREAN WAR VETERANS MEMORIAL

Built by the Korean War Veterans Memorial Advisory at a cost of $18 million in donated funds, this memorial, located on a 2.2 acre site adjacent to the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, features a sculptured column of 19-foot soldiers arrayed for combat with the American flag as their symbolic objective. A 164foot mural wall is inscribed with the words, “Freedom is Not Free” and is etched with 2500 photographic images of nurses, chaplains, crew chiefs, mechanics, and other support personnel to symbolize the vast effort that sustained the military operation.

SMITHSONIAN NATIONAL ZOOLOGICAL PARK

The National Zoo is home to more than 2,000 animals of nearly 400 different species, including giant pandas, Asian elephants, tigers, lions, birds, reptiles and much more. Potomac Craftsmen Fiber Gallery The gallery is located in Studio 18 of the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria on the waterfront.

Washington DC’s first co-operative fiber gallery has 70 members some of whom are published, teach and have won awards in the fiber arts genre.
