omance isn’t just chocolate truffles, champagne and roses, though we’d never say ‘no’ to any of them. sometimes simply spending time together can do more to spark ardor than a little blue box from tiffany & Co. let us help you plan a getaway that will be remembered long after the flowers have wilted. two exciting cities with an abundance of great sights, richmond and Wilmington, are within easy driving distance of Washington, DC. get packed and let’s get going. Don’t forget to hold hands and sneak a smooch.

Valentine Museum

Richmond Rides

Richmond: Go for the art, stay for the food Virginia is for Lovers and the capital city offers a wealth of ideas for devotees of art, history, food and theater. Check-in to Quirk Hotel, A Destination Hotel, located in a beautifully renovated Italian Renaissance building in the heart of downtown. Here original artwork mingles with contemporary design to create a fashionably welcoming atmosphere. Next door, Quirk Gallery features work by both established and emerging artists. Pick up a piece of art or something distinctive from the boutique shop. Quirk Hotel arranges tours of Richmond’s hip street art, which ranges from thoughtprovoking to bizarre and is created by some of the world’s top graffiti artists. Thanks to the well-known art programs at local Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), Richmond is home to many galleries and talented artists. Century-old Valentine Museum is home to a renowned costume and textile collection, as well as a repository of Richmond history. The city’s stories are preserved in thoughtfully curated displays, and there is even a map of the city laid out on the wooden floor. Highlights include 18th-century ball

gowns, cigarette rolling machinery, General Robert E. Lee’s boots and the Woolworth’s lunch counter and stools. The history of bicycling in Richmond from the mid-1870s to today is another draw, as are changing exhibitions. Browse the lobby shop for locally made gifts. Often the best way to get a feel for a place is on foot or atop a bicycle. Richmond Rides offers tours of the city center, the oldest neighborhood Church Hill and, best of all, a foodie tour. With comfortable bikes and a knowledgeable guide, the only thing left is the food. On this tour, riders visit several eateries and sample a diverse array of local food. You might taste small batch pudding, breads and pastries, homemade kombucha or the most delicious grilled pimento cheese that you’ve ever had in your life! You may not bike off the calories, but you’ll love every minute. For the perfect evening out, start with dinner at Maple & Pine in Quirk Hotel, where Chef David Dunlap and team create exquisite dishes such as braised oxtail eggroll with shitake mushrooms and dandelion greens, black pepper tagliatelle with roasted eggplant and basil sauce, or grilled pork shoulder with kimchi, cornbread and pickled red onions. Each bite delights the taste

buds. If espresso chocolate mousse is on the dessert menu, be sure to order it. Follow the blazing marquee lights across the street for a Virginia Repertory Theatre performance. The quality shows of this professional theater company rival anything you’ll see on Broadway, and at a reasonable price. The ornate 600-seat Sara Belle and Neil November Theatre’s history dates back to vaudeville and it was featured in the film Lincoln. Before retiring for the night, take a seat at the hotel bar or rooftop lounge where the cocktails feature local seasonal ingredients and fresh juices. Bourbon lovers will enjoy the Silver Queen. Richmond offers so much to see and do, savor and sip, that repeat visits will definitely have to be made. After all, you still need to shop in Carytown, stroll the Fan Area Historic District, explore Hollywood Cemetery and check out the statues along Monument Avenue.

Wilmington: Go for the history, stay for the gardens Wilmington is way more than a place to incorporate a business. Take your companion to visit a stunning mansion, beautiful gardens, spellbinding artwork and historical hamlets. Stay at The Inn at Montchanin Village and Spa, a serene escape where the cozy rooms are located in houses that were once the homes of DuPont powder mills workers. Check out “samara turning in the Wind” a fun sculpture by andré harvey in the historic formal gardens. before leaving, take a close look at the detailed ironwork on the entrance gates. after you’ve wandered through all of the gardens, head to the Delaware art Museum and explore the galleries. you’ll marvel at the extensive Pre-raphaelites collection; the largest outside of the united Kingdom. Paintings by Dante gabriel rossetti, Edward burne-Jones and John Everett millais mingle with photos and decorative arts. by rejecting convention, these artists created a beautiful world based on literature and legend. other collections include works by howard Pyle, Edward hopper and local boy andrew Wyeth. there are art deco elevator

With so much more to see and do you’ll be planning another getaway soon. after all, you still need to gawk at longwood gardens, take in a show at the Playhouse on rodney square, check out the markers in Wilmington and brandywine Cemetery and fire the cannon at Fort Delaware.

This first retrospective of photographer Irving Penn’s work in almost 20 years features 146 photographs, drawn entirely from the extensive holdings of the Museum, both personal and public, within the larger history of modern art. It reveals how Penn (1917–2009) used photography to respond to social and cultural change by brilliantly describing surface appearances in ways that speak to the depths of human existence. 1st Floor, West

Approximately 20 prints and drawings demonstrate the continuing legacy of the BMA’s relationship with the Matisse family. Recognizing the unique character of the museum’s Matisse collection, recent gifts from the family—an impressive group of prints from the artist’s later years as well as remarkable drawings related to a masterwork from the Cone Collection, The Yellow Dress—have now established the BMA’s holdings as the most comprehensive collection of Matisse prints in North America. In addition, the close personal relationship between the artist and collectors Etta and Claribel Cone provided the opportunity to acquire key works from the late 20s and early 30s while encouraging Etta Cone to collect all aspects of the artist’s work—painting, sculpture, and graphic arts. The Cone sisters’ dedication to collecting the art of Henri Matisse established at the BMA one of the most important collections of the artist’s work. FREER GALLERY of ART ARTHUR M. This expansive photo collection takes viewers around the United States, from Fountain Place in Dallas to local locations like Dumbarton Oaks in Washington, D.C.

Alan Ward occupies a unique position in landscape architecture. He is a renowned practitioner of the craft as well as an accomplished photographer of the landscape. Working mostly in black and white, Ward focuses on the fundamental material that constructs the landscape: grain, texture, bright light, dappled shade. By denying the viewer the familiar green lawns and foliage, colored blooms and surfaces, Ward’s large format photographs challenge us to see the landscape with new

Suspended Animation

This exhibit brings together six artists who use digitally generated images as a tool to question conceptions of reality: Ed Atkins, Antoine Catala, Ian Cheng, Josh Kline, Helen Marten, and Agnieszka Polska. Their immersive environments confront the viewer with the actualities of the digital age, such as the dissolution of privacy, the digitization of identity, and the impact of a hyperreal virtual world on tangible physical experience. “Technologically produced images increasingly influence and define our lives,” said Gianni Jetzer, the exhibition’s DCMetroPlus.com • March/April/May 2016 •

Wonder

The Renwick Gallery, home to the Smithsonian American Art Museum’s craft and decorative arts program, reopened to the public in November following a major two-year renovation. The inaugural exhibition, Wonder, transforms the entire museum into an immersive artwork that encompasses all the public galleries, with new room-size installations by major contemporary artists. While the nine artists featured create strikingly different works, they are connected by their interest in creating large-scale installations from unexpected materials. These works are expressions of process, labor, and materials that are grounded in the everyday world, but when combined produce awe-inspiring results.
