W

ashington Monument, seen it. American History Museum, been there. Stand in a long line to catch a glimpse of the Constitution at the National Archives, done that. Photo of the family in front of the White House, yep. Capitol Hill, National Mall, Air and Space Museum – check, check, check. Now what? While the famous monuments and museums of Washington, DC are the obvious and most important things to see on one’s first visits, what should you do after that? Whether you live in the metro area or are visiting from out of town, there are oodles more things to do, and they make it a fantastic way to see DC with fresh eyes. Here are a few way to see Washington, DC off the tour guide map:

EASTERN MARKET

Natty Neighborhoods DC neighborhoods are best explored on foot, whether shopping the boutiques in Georgetown or sampling the restaurants near Dupont Circle. Stroll up Massachusetts Avenue to admire the foreign embassies along Embassy Row; make a game out of guessing the country flags. From Dupont Circle, take the bus to Adams Morgan for a more laidback side of the DCMetroPlus.com • August/September 2015 •

city. Taste the whiskeys at Jack Rose Dining Saloon or German street food at Döner Bistro. Head to Eastern Market for unique souvenirs and picnic supplies at the namesake historic market hall, where you’ll also find the work of local artisans. Unearth treasures at the Sunday Flea Market at Eastern Market. Capitol Hill Books is where book lovers can get lost in the stacks spread over two floors of an old townhouse. Restaurants abound and along nearby Barracks Row you can have breakfast at Ted’s Bulletin. Return later for dinner and a Belgian ale at Belga Café. Check out the music scene along U Street NW and stop in at Bohemian Caverns, where DC’s own Duke Ellington performed, as did Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Cab Calloway. There is a vibrant food scene along the H Street Corridor where you can stand in line for ramen at Toki Underground or grab fish and chips at The Queen Vic. Cultural Experiences Washington, DC breathes culture with an unending array of music, dance, theater and more. Take in a show at Synetic Theater where movement and innovation combine for an unforgettable experience. The intimate

Folger Theatre brings to life the works of William Shakespeare and others. One of the best concert experiences can be had at The Kennedy Center. Here, each evening at 6:00 p.m., the Millennium Stage hosts free concerts. Enjoy the performance and take in a view of the Potomac River from the Roof Terrace Restaurant. Jazz enthusiasts can head to the National Gallery of Art Sculpture Garden for free Friday night concerts through August. For pure pomp make reservations for the Evening Parade at Marine Barracks Washington, DC at 8th and I Streets. The precision marching and music are sure to make the heart swell with pride. Performances are Fridays from 8:45 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. through the end of August. If culture is defined as “human intellectual achievement” then no trip is complete without a visit to the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress. A feast for the eyes, the interior includes murals, mosaics, and Corinthian columns – lots of them. Highlights include the Bob Hope Gallery, Gershwin Room, Gutenberg Bible and, of course, the spectacular Main Reading Room. Free public tours are given Monday through Saturday.

Sporting Events Late summer is the ideal time to take in a baseball game at Nationals Park when the weather is slightly less humid, but the roar of the crowd is just as intoxicating. Hop metro’s green line to Navy Yard and head for the stadium. Not only is the park beautifully constructed with a scoreboard so big you won’t need your glasses to read it, but the food options are diverse and delicious. Enjoy a burger and fries from Shake Shack, half-smokes at Ben’s Chili Bowl or a sit down meal at Red Porch Restaurant. Settle into a seat with a cold beverage and a hotdog or peanuts, and simply enjoy the crack of a bat as it connects with the baseball. Be on the lookout for fly balls and, if you catch one, flex your muscles for the camera! Special to the Nationals are the Racing Presidents who make a run for it during the fourth inning. Tip: Pose for photos with the Presidents and their “Secret Service” agents (no kidding). If baseball isn’t your game, check out the professional soccer and tennis teams. Imagine bending it like Beckham while cheering on DC United and Washington Spirit from the stands and marvel at the athletic prowess on the pitch. The Washington Kastles are garnering new fans with their high-energy matches that include cheerleaders and mascots, as well as an intimate stadium venue. You’ll never look at Wimbledon the same after experiencing tennis this way.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream – Synetic Theater

Final Thoughts Consider putting the camera down once in a while and really take a look at these cool historic places without the barrier of a viewfinder. Take your time simply because you never know what you might discover. Who knows? You might find some new places to add to your list. Lincoln’s Cottage, check. Darth Vader gargoyle at the National Cathedral, check. Corpse flower at the U.S. Botanic Garden… well, maybe before lunch.

Helpful Hints and Travel Tips The Lexus Presidents Club has some of the best seats at Nationals Park. Partake of great food, sit behind home plate, and check out the action in the batting cages. Club walls are lined with photos of U.S. Presidents throwing out the first pitch. It’s worth the price of admission. Scheduled track work is often done on the metro rail network on weekends. Be sure to check the train schedule so you’re not left waiting on the platform. Stay near the White House at the French-inspired Sofitel Washington, DC Lafayette Square with dining at ICI Urban Bistro and cocktails in Le Bar. Splurge for the luxurious Presidential Suite, if you like. Another choice close to the downtown attractions is The Westin Washington, DC City Center, which is also within easy walking distance of Dupont Circle.

Pride and Prejudice

Jane Austen’s mastery of manners and morals will be on full display in this world premiere production of her beloved masterpiece. In the Bennet sisters’ 19th-century English world, marriage is the prize, but for secondeldest, Lizzy, companionship trumps blind courtship. Enter Mr. Darcy, and one of literature’s most iconic and tempestuous romances takes flight. Journey through a world quite unlike—and yet perhaps not so different from—our own, as Lizzy and Darcy learn that first impressions aren’t all they seem, and that second chances can lead to answers that have been there the entire time.

texts&beheadings/ElizabethR Drawing in part on Elizabeth I’s letters and other material in the Folger collection, this devised theatre piece uses Elizabeth’s own words to reveal her wit, courage, and extraordinary love of her people. Four actresses portray the resilient queen in this compelling, multilingual drama. Through poems, prayers, and private letters, the woman who swore that she would not make windows into men’s souls reveals her own. Performed by Compagnia de’ Colombari, this new work is part of the Women’s Voices Festival.

National Firearms Museum

The NRA’s museum consists of 15 galleries comprised of 85 exhibit cases housing 3,000 firearms. The museum examines the nearly 700-year history of firearms with a special emphasis on the American experience. Each gallery is evocative of a period of time in American history, from the stockade fort at Jamestown to the gun factories of New England. Life-sized dioramas include a nineteenth-century riflemaker’s shop, a trench on the Western Front in WWI, and a shelled-out town square in Normandy in WWII. The firearms tell the stories of how they were used to secure our freedom and independence, and have been used ever since to maintain and preserve those liberties. Check out Steampunk Guns, a unique new exhibit. Continuously evolving, steampunk encompasses science fiction and elements of popular culture – including zombies, dirigibles, mad scientists, and Western gunslingers.  11250 Waples Mill Road
