hen Benjamin Franklin signed the Declaration of Independence, he commented, “We must all hang together, or, most assuredly, we shall all hang separately.” If that seems a bit gruesome, it was probably meant to be in order to reinforce the message that people can achieve more if they work together than they might if they work separately.

That is also true of organizations within the same sector. In the case of airlines, while there are matters whose commercial imperative is built on something exclusive to an airline (their menu of services offered, their promotions arrangements, the deals they strike with OEMs and other suppliers and more…) there are also matters whose commercial imperative depends upon the whole ecosystem of the sector (safety, flight scheduling, fuel efficiency / carbon reduction successes and more…).

In this issue, we have a splendid article from Closed Loop Consulting with a focus on how collaboration can contribute to a more resilient future post-COVID. The article talks about the importance of working together with data sharing in order to bring about a revolution in flight planning and flight management that will benefit everybody in the sector. There is of course, a lot more to it than that, as you’ll see. As well as that, you’ll find a case study from Japan Airlines (JAL) telling how, by better and faster sharing weather of information through the use of automation, they have ensured that pilots are informed in near real-time about potential turbulence on their route and are therefore, better able to avoid or mitigate the effects

of it. Our Solutions in Practice this issue is about the critical matter of performance monitoring and how a better system is helping to ensure that the aircraft of Wizz Air are more often flying at or near their optimum efficiency.

Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS (SAD) — Part of The SA Group; has been preparing for a generation change in the management roles for more than a year, in order to secure a smooth transition and retention of vital experience and knowhow throughout the organization. After celebrating his 40th anniversary as an employee within The SA Group, Erling L. Linneberg, expressed a natural desire to start the handover of management responsibilities to his successor — a handover process that is now complete after The SA Group received the final approval from EASA on a new management structure announced in mid-February 2021.

“Erling has been with The SA Group since the beginning and his solution oriented and flexible mindset along with his likeable personality has been a huge contributor to The SA Group and where we are today. That is also why we are happy that Erling is staying onboard, taking on a more detail-oriented role as a Special Programs Engineer for the years to come”, said Hardy B. Truelsen, Head of The SA Group.

Erling L. Linneberg continued: “My work life with The SA Group has been a journey of a lifetime, and I am happy that I can now step down into a position where I can make my experience count and go back to where it all started — designing and delivering customeroriented solutions in the individual projects”.

To take over from Erling, The SA Group was very excited to announce that Troels M. Lund is now formally approved as Head of Design, after joining the team back in 2018, with the ambition to grow into this position. Troels has now obtained sufficient knowledge about The SA Group’s system and procedures and with his more than 30 years of aviation experience in multiple management roles, he is very happy to be back in the design environment, where his heart truly lies.

“I am, first of all, an avionics engineer by heart, and I have found that my passion is best exploited within the DOA area, where I have spent a vast part of my time in aviation. Working in an organization like The SA Group, where we have an extremely versatile customer segment, and strive to push boundaries every day, is a perfect fit for me”, said Troels M. Lund.

In addition to the Head of Design role, also shifting role is the Chief Executive position, where Michael R. Truelsen is taking over from his father, Hardy B. Truelsen. “We are in the midst of our generation change in The SA Group as a whole, and this is a natural next step, where Michael will take over as Chief Executive”, said Hardy B. Truelsen.

This is not a sign of retirement from Hardy B. Truelsen, but Hardy is to focus more on sales and business development tasks going forward.

Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS, — Part of The SA Group: Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS develops and designs complex structural and electrical complete turn-key avionics modifications for basically any application and is involved in complete aircraft nose to tail engineering and certification programs. Through the EASA Part 21J approved design organization, Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS offers development of

supplemental type certificates (STC) and minor changes to existing aircraft type certificates, covering any avionics or electrical modification of any aircraft or helicopter application. Over the years, Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS has developed more than 700 STCs and certification packages for a wide range of avionics system modifications in a wide range of aircraft types.

Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS also provides certification packages complying with a wide range of other military and civil regulations and requirements, customized to the specific rules and regulations in any specific area. The SA Group is represented in eight countries, at 11 locations in Europe, the Middle East, India and Southeast Asia. The headquarters, which was established in 1978, is located in Billund, Denmark.

AeroLogic relies on AviationDW

Airlines, like almost every other industry, are more and more facing the problem of being flooded with data. The challenge is to make this data accessible for the ongoing improvement processes. With CrossConsense, Aerologic now found a partner who will support the cargo airline in bringing additional structure to the mass of data that can be drawn from AeroLogic’s MRO backend system AMOS. AeroLogic already uses standard off-the-shelf BI tools and has simply attached AviationDW as an additional data source. Behind the scenes, the AviationDW data transformation jobs are running to prepare raw backend MRO system data for easy access. Data is exported by AMOS and sent to AviationDW. The full control over all data export activity stays with AeroLogic.

AeroLogic signed a contract with CrossConsense not only for the data ingestion process provisioning but also for hosting of the data warehouse and support provided by CrossConsense. As AeroLogic already is an AMOS Support Customer of CrossConsense the partnership between the two companies is of mutual benefit because the cargo airline will also support CrossConsense to further develop the functionalities of AviationDW. Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores add Comply365’s ProAuthor for end-to-end content authoring and distribution

In late February 2021, Aviation software leader Comply365 was pleased to announce its two newest airline customers, Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores, who both will soon leverage the power of streamlined compliance management and improve collaboration and efficiency with Comply365 solutions.

The airlines, both part of the SATA Group based in the Portuguese Autonomous Region of The Azores, recently acquired ProAuthor, Comply365’s end-to-end operational content and compliance management system that enables faster, more routine manual revisions, and enables airlines to always be audit ready.

While airlines typically spend months preparing for audits using legacy systems, ProAuthor will significantly reduce that time by tracing the manual content with corresponding regulatory standards. By providing the ability to tag standards and automatically run reports, the airlines will always be prepared for audits. ProAuthor will replace rudimentary word processing solutions at the pair of airlines, where technical publications staff will now

Second Web Manuals employee selected for sustainability forum, One Young World In late March 2021, Chaitanya Kaushik, Sales Development Team Lead at Web Manuals, became the second of the company’s employees to be selected as the European Business Aviation Association’s (EBAA) delegate for the One Young World summit, taking place in Munich in July 2021.

Western Global Airlines selects Evionica as its EFB Cargo Weight & Balance software partner Western Global was in a need of a EFB Weight & Balance solution and evaluated leading vendors from the US, Europe and Asia. Garmin® International, Inc announced in mid-April 2021, European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval of an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) solution for the ATR 42 and ATR 72 turboprop aircraft. Together, the GPS 3000 and GTX 3000 serve as a rugged, standalone ADS-B Out solution that meets the stringent demands of Transport Category aircraft around the globe. The Scandinavian Avionics ADS-B STC covers all models -500 and earlier.

Designed and certified by Scandinavian Avionics, the STC and slide-in rack contain all of the necessary Garmin equipment and paperwork for the ADS-B Out solution. Scandinavian Avionics has completed the initial installation on both the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft. Air Alsie, a European ATR and Dassault operator, is the first customer to install this solution on their ATR 72-500 aircraft.

Evoke Systems launch new dark mode on EFOS for iPad In late April 2021, Evoke Systems were delighted to announce they have launched dark mode for their EFOS iPad app. Initially rolling out across their Journey Log module, which is part of the EFOS Flight Management Suite, it is anticipated that dark mode will be available across all EFOS iPad modules by the end of the year. With research showing it offers many health benefits, including reduced eye strain, dark mode is fast becoming the norm in modern-day digital products.

Working in collaboration with their customers, Evoke has designed a dark mode that is easily and instantly accessible for their clients, with careful consideration given to color palettes, functionality, and the ability to roll this out to other iOS modules across their three product suites in the future.

Air Moldova and NAVBLUE take a step further towards big data in flight operations Air Moldova, the national airline of Moldova, announced in late April 2021 that it has signed up for the recently launched application of the OPTIMIZE suite: the Performance Factor Optimizer (PFO). This brand-new digital application, connected to the Airbus Skywise platform, offers a significant improvement to the existing Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) process.

hile all aircraft encounter some degree of turbulence on most flights, moderate turbulence can make movement around the cabin difficult. Severe turbulence can be more dangerous not so much to aircraft safety (they’re built to withstand it) but to passenger safety and comfort. In this light, any solution that can minimize aircraft exposure to turbulence, by helping pilots avoid the condition, will enhance passenger comfort and safety. There are two main components in this new system. The first one is a solution developed by Japan Airlines. This is the first of its kind in Japan and it uses technology that automatically calculates turbulence indicators. The second

We are pleased to report that Japan Airlines increased efficiency in their operations by using the new system.

In the past Japan Airlines flight dispatchers would take turbulence reports from an aircraft that had encountered turbulence and share them with other aircraft in the vicinity. However, there was a time lag before the information reached pilots of the other aircraft. With this new solution, turbulence information can now be sent to aircraft automatically if a turbulence report exceeds a certain threshold. The aim is to quickly share turbulence information with aircraft in flight in order to minimize the risk for them of encountering turbulence.

In summary, by combining both systems in January 2021, the process from when an aircraft encounters and then reports turbulence to when other aircraft in the vicinity are notified has been completely automated (figure 5).

Judith Semar: Judith Semar, Product Owner Schedule Optimization, Lufthansa Systems Aircraft IT: How did the NetLine/HubDesigner get started?

JS: It started in 2018 with a completely different subject. We developed our NetLine vision and dealt with many future topics. In the course of this, we always put ourselves in the customers’ shoes. We soon realized that optimization would be one of the key focus areas for our customers in future years. As a result, the NetLine Optimizer Team was born. It deals exclusively with optimization topics; primarily in the network planning and scheduling environment, but also supporting our colleagues from the

Operations Control and Crew division. Then, when the Covid-19 crisis hit, we quickly realized that the trend of the past few years, towards dynamic scheduling and network planning methods, had accelerated. At that time, we already worked closely with one of the largest airline groups in the world on the topic of network design and hub optimization.

Since the pandemic drastically changed the market and competition environment for airlines, our customers need an optimizer building networks, hub

structures and schedules from scratch based on the changed demand and supply situation. Of course, it significantly accelerated the entire development process.

Aircraft IT: What is the attraction of airline-related software?

JS: We live in a time when networks need to be adjusted or even redesigned more frequently, to a larger extent, and closer to departure day. Ultimately,

we want our customers to exploit the full market potential. This means that they must be able to quickly adapt the offer and provide it in an operationally feasible schedule. This is not even possible without the use of the latest IT and optimization algorithms. Within NetLine we provide a large set of schedule optimization tools, like network design, fleet assignment or rotation optimization.

Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives NetLine?

JS: Lufthansa Systems’ NetLine consists of several software solutions: from Strategic Network Planning, Scheduling and Codeshare Management to Crew Management, Load and Operations Control. It is an ecosystem that is supported by various optimizers and is closely interlinked with other systems through modern interface technologies. As already mentioned above, we have developed a vision for NetLine: ‘Together we connect to make the best decision ahead of time.’ On the one hand, this sentence states where we want to go with NetLine, but on the other hand it also describes the cooperation with our customers. It is important to us to involve customers in the development process as early as possible. That’s why we develop new solutions together and iteratively with fast feedback loops, i.e., rapid prototyping. So, step by step, after building prototypes, we build an MVP (Minimum Viable Product) and, depending on customer needs, develop it to a FFP (Fully Functional Product).

Especially for the optimization solutions, this approach has proven itself, because we can first test whether the algorithms work and only then start with the code development.

Aircraft IT: What has been NetLine/HubDesigner’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

JS: That immediately brings two key product functionalities to mind. Have you ever heard of Clean Sheet Network Optimization? As mentioned before, we live in times in which market conditions change

This can only be done with optimizers such as our NetLine/HubDesigner.

The NetLine/HubDesigner combines three optimization approaches in one and does so with incredibly fast results. We really make sure that all profitability potentials are exploited, and the best (multi-) hub network is created. This covers hub optimization, fleet assignment and rotation optimization. This way the NetLine/HubDesigner creates the most profitable O&D network without having to fall back on an existing schedule. What’s really impressive is the performance. Scientists have been working on research problems like this for a long time, but the real art lies in bringing a practical solution to market.

Aircraft IT: What has been NetLine/HubDesigner’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

JS: In our trial runs, we compared NetLine/ HubDesigner with a solution from a large international consulting firm. The results from the NetLine/HubDesigner far exceeded the profitability enhancement potentials of the competing solution.

This excellent study result, by the way, convinced our customer, to follow up with this project. We will take the next important step in June, when we carry out a network optimization for the winter season 21/22. Focus of this optimization run will be to adjust to changes in demand, taking consideration of the confirmed slot portfolio.

Especially now, during the recovery phase in the aftermath of the Covid 19 pandemic, we can provide our customers with an excellent tool to rethink their network in an efficient and successful AIRCRAFT IT Operations • MAY-JUNE 2021 • 40

way. Semi-manual and sequential network planning processes are not only tedious and time consuming, but often do not exploit the full profitability potentials. An integrated optimization approach combining destination selection, frequency planning, time optimization and fleet assignment to generate profitable (multi-)hub networks taking into consideration O&D demand and competition supports airlines to act successfully in the current fast changing market conditions.

Aircraft IT: What have been NetLine/HubDesigner’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

JS: In this context, I would not talk about disappointments, but rather about challenges.

Technology is developing fast and often rapid prototyping is better than long discussions on pros and cons. In the beginning of the development, we tested and combined several optimization approaches to find the best fit for this specific business need. It was especially important to build an optimizer that not only delivers a very good result, but also does so in an acceptable runtime. Long run times prevent the application of such optimization approaches in a real business context. Therefore, we paid special attention on the performance of our new optimizer from the beginning. We gained a lot of experiences with several AI and optimization approaches. During this process we quickly learned that the solution lies in the combination of different methods. This also means that team structures change quickly and specialists with unique expertise are needed, as well as from very different areas. I would almost call it ‘normal’ by now that such a team

The methods of agile development provide a good guideline, but ultimately you have to find the best way of working for yourself.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what NetLine/ HubDesigner does for aviation customers?

JS: The NetLine/HubDesigner generates profitable (multi-) hub networks, optimizes fleet utilization and creates the ideal node structure in a hub or multi-hub environment. The optimizer harmonizes the demand side with the supply side. This results in an operationally feasible schedule that optimally serves demand and generates the highest network profitability.

Aircraft IT: What is new on NetLine/ HubDesigner’s development horizon?

JS: NetLine/HubDesigner is available to airlines as a web-based solution in the cloud. This end-to-end service is simple to implement, cost-effective and customers benefit from scalable use.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? JS: Artificial intelligence and algorithms

will continue to significantly influence the way we make decisions in the future. We also believe that the strict separation of departments and static process flows will soften in the future.

We need to be able to consider crew and maintenance requirements much earlier in the scheduling and planning process to achieve significant cost savings. We will have increasing numbers of IT assistants as decision support. Experts will use these tools and will have to understand their outcome as well as validate the proposed solutions. IT helps, but it does not replace experts, we should always keep that in mind. The biggest thing, however, will be to choose the right methods to best respond to the business challenge at hand. There is no single best method for everything.

any fuel efficiency initiatives are dependent on the accuracy of flight planning and Flight Management System predictions. The accuracy of these systems depends on aircraft performance deterioration level which indicates by how much actual aircraft fuel consumption differs from its baseline model at any given point in time.

Every aircraft has different in-flight performance. Differences originate mainly from engine deterioration, but also from maintenance quality, installation of performance improvement packages or just the manufacturer’s production quality.

Accurate monitoring and application of performance deterioration factors enable these differences to be turned into emission savings.

To understand how it works, let’s start with some facts. For each aircraft type, manufacturers publish associated performance models. These models play a fundamental role in Flight Planning and Flight Path optimization. They are being used in: • Flight Planning System: • Calculation of OFP (Operational Flight Plan) fuel figures; • Calculation of the lowest cost trajectory.

• Flight Management System: • Calculation of economic speed; • Calculation of Optimum Flight Level; • Calculation of FMS descent path (for Airbus aircraft known as IDLE factor); • Calculation of FMS fuel figures (EFOB).

Performance models are built for each given aircraft type. As every aircraft in the fleet burns a different amount of fuel, we need a way to represent the performance of each tail. This is done through the use of Aircraft Performance

Monitoring (APM), by adjusting individual aircraft performance models using actual observations. As a result, Flight Planning and FMS predictions are more precise. Increased precision translates directly into emission savings. Regarding OFP fuel figures, savings are also indirect as more accurate fuel figures translate into less overburns — less flights in which actual fuel burn was higher than planned. This increases pilots’ trust in the planned fuel figures and thus they tend to take less extra fuel on board. Summing up, safe overburns (underburns) are key in the reduction of captain’s discretionary fuel.

APM output is also used in Aircraft Information Management Systems for the purpose of supporting tail-assignment. Until 2019 Wizz Air Flight Operations followed a legacy APM process, which required significant manual workload and in which precision was far from ideal. We spent most of the time preparing and processing the data, with not much time left for analyzing trends or results and the impact they had for our operations.

Another drawback was that the updating of performance factors took place every month or quarter depending on standard deviation of results. Such lengthy intervals result in fuel penalties related to planning too much fuel until the new performance factor is available (for example the fuel burn of an aircraft might significantly decrease due to an engine change). As a result, in order to cater for cases where large differences in deterioration occurred, there was no other way than to apply a rounding-up policy. Otherwise, aircraft could fly for extended periods with a too low performance factor.

In 2019 Wizz Air established a long-term cooperation with StorkJet, which supports airlines in aircraft performance monitoring and fuel efficiency optimization. Their solution named ‘AdvancedAPM’ resolves the issues described above and fits much better into Wizz Air’s vision. With help of Advanced-APM, Wizz Air performance monitoring process is now: • Fully automatic, requiring only analytical workload on the Flight Ops side; • Precise, with daily resolution and low scatter of the results; • Independent from aircraft and engine manufacturers; • Includes all flight phases; • Much more advanced — including over 60 charts related to aircraft performance and diagnostics aspects; • Includes IDLE factor.

Instead of obsolete ACMS reports, AdvancedAPM uses wireless QAR (Quick Access Recorder) data which records ~20x more flight data at higher precision and frequency. A proof-of-concept performed on historical data indicated significant improvements in monitoring precision. Increased resolution and level of precision connected with diagnostics data enabled us to more accurately identify what was the root cause of performance deterioration. In some cases, maintenance actions were performed, recovering some aircraft performance.

The example below (Figure 1) presents total deterioration (blue line), airframe deterioration (orange line) and both engines deterioration (green line) over time.

In September 2019 Wizz Air changed both engines, which resulted in decreasing engine deterioration from 2% to 0.7% and total deterioration from 3.5% to 2.4%.

With daily resolution we are able to see the change in performance just after the maintenance action.

On another example (Figure 2) we can see that total deterioration (blue line) increased from 2,7% to 3,6%.

Looking into the details, it turned out that the increased degradation was caused by a sudden jump in engine 2 deterioration (figure 3).

AdvancedAPM also offers a diagnostics module, which is helpful in independent monitoring of engine performance after a shop visit or other maintenance actions. The example below (Figures 4 and 5) shows one of the PW-1127GA shop visits. The correlation between EGT (Exhaust Gas Temperature) and Engine deterioration is clearly visible.

What is more, StorkJet provided Wizz Air with a study describing Descent Profile Optimization which clearly indicated saving potential and all the correlations that might have impact on savings.

Summing up, actual aircraft performance is the key in flight path optimization, reduction of overburns and proper fleet assignment. With AdvancedAPM Wizz Air’s analytical team can focus on data analysis instead of data processing. All of that results in fuel savings and reduction of CO2 emissions.

Such changes are immediately picked up by AdvancedAPM. With automatic alerting, Wizz Air can immediately react to increased degradation and work on corrective actions. JRG: I would say that it started a long time ago, as an idea, when I was still working for Embraer, back in 2012, but it took some years and maturity to finally take it out of paper. It really started taking shape in September 2019, with the mission in mind to establish a fully remote company, focused on start-ups and small operators, to solve the main

operational struggles we have noticed they face to compete (and survive) during the first years of operations.

Aircraft IT: What has been Simpfly’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

JRG: For sure it was to implement our disruptive business model based on fully remote support in a business such as aviation which, even though it is sometimes seen as state-of-the-art in terms of technology solutions, is still struggling to adapt to this global trend. While many companies had to rush to look for solutions due to the COVID-19 crisis, we were born remote and have the experience to work like this.

Aircraft IT: What have been Simpfly’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

JRG: I would not say it is a disappointment, but I have learned the hard way over the years how the aviation business gets trapped in some oligopolies that end up jeopardizing new airlines — especially in developing countries — in such a competitive market.

In the end, it also harms development of disruptive solutions. Breaking this logic is one of our missions.

Our next step is to do the same with knowledge: we are developing a set of e-learning courses, starting with a comprehensive Flight Operations Engineering course to be accessible (and affordable) not only for airline-sponsored staff, but also for individual graduated engineers, flight dispatchers and even pilots looking for specialization and repositioning.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? JRG: We believe we will see great evolution in EFB applications capabilities once the Internet becomes cheaper and a standard in the cockpit, especially on solutions focused on safety through communication and data sharing between aircraft (and not only from the same airline). One of our partners, Wader Aviation, has been developing tools in that sense which I believe will revolutionize how we deal with threat and error management.

I

n part one, we discussed some recent experiences in the airline industry. We speculated about lessons that could be drawn from them and what opportunities might be presented by taking a slightly different perspective. In part two, we’ll cast our gaze outside the cave and forge a new path, looking at some possibilities in attitude and action that will challenge past thinking but that could deliver significant value.

A FUTURE FOCUSED PERSPECTIVE

Instead of looking back to 2019 as the model, we think looking forward and challenging ourselves with a race to 2029 might drive some excellent outcomes and add to the industry’s capability and its fortunes. We’ve got a few ideas about the sort of stuff that we’ll have to get into our operational consciousness to get the industry there. What Martin and Marcus suggested in part one is that the industry needs to break out of the COVID cocoon and look forward—rather than backwards to the status quo. For as long as I can remember, we’ve all been doing the same things in similar ways and thinking that, somehow, we’re different and, even more disturbing, given that we’ve already mentioned Einstein, that, somehow, we’re going to get different outcomes.

Collectively, the industry has dug around the edges with technology, expecting it to provide the answer to everything. But did it really change anything on its own?

A fearless assessment would suggest probably not. Sure, we’ve eked out some efficiencies here and there and talked a big game about the low-hanging fruit all being gone, except that it isn’t as we’ve demonstrated in earlier webinars. If all the ‘low-hanging fruit’ of efficiency is already harvested, you’d think the industry would be about as efficient as it could be. Indeed, one of the airline industry’s most revered and venerable denizens thinks we are, except that we’re not. There’s more to be done.

To thrive on the other side of COVID, we’ve got to change our mindset and focus on rebuilding and maintaining a healthy, vibrant, agile and resilient industry.

To achieve that, there are some things that we’ll all have to deal with, and we think now is the time to start planning for them. Think about how these things will impact our industry…

• Airline recovery and resumption of pre-COVID growth trends; • Hydrogen and battery-powered aircraft; • Integrating with Urban aerial transport systems and operation; • High altitude balloons and aircraft systems; • Commercial space; • Supersonic Transport (SST); • What else?

One of the critical parts of the journey to 2029 is to think about what will be different as we project forward to a future-focused worldview for the industry.

The first step is to break down some of the assumptions we make about it. One

Then there’s the other stuff that we all do routinely, thinking it’s unique to us but that everyone else is doing, getting the same result and thinking they’re also unique (figure 5.1). The duplicated effort and other costs are punishing.

MARCUS CARR: What’s been illustrated here is the conventional segregation of information into that which is competitive and that which is noncompetitive information more or less specific to one airline and every other airline too. The issue with the non-competitive information is that every airline is essentially developing and producing the same information, documents or systems: a lot of the same information, for example, to match industry standards or regulatory and compliance requirements. All of that information is, essentially, exactly the same. So, as a result, with data that’s been done individually by airlines, the perspective is not nearly as broad as it could be. Some information is almost certainly out of date, and, essentially, those data are disconnected from the rest of the industry, making sharing and exchange difficult at best.

Thinking about what it might look like in a more unified industry (figure 5.2), we’ve maintained the illustrative delineation of information that fits in the competitive advantage frame but now broken the non-competitive

information into two different types: proprietary and non-proprietary.

Proprietary information is that which airlines are going to have to produce for themselves because, although it may be the same type of information that other airlines manufacture, it will be specific to their market or their organization. The non-proprietary and non-competitive information, on the other hand, is that material that every airline is producing or consuming and that is essentially identical between them. We should be looking at mechanisms that will facilitate that sort of information being collaboratively produced and maintained by all airlines. The result of that would be a massive reduction in the duplication of effort. Because there would be many of the industry’s best minds looking at it, it will probably be very high value, very current, and connected to the industry. For instance, there may be safety concerns that one airline sees that others may not have spotted yet.

As that body of information grows, airlines need to put in less effort to maintain it.

Because of ICAO’s association with the UN and the WHO, it’s been broadly argued that ICAO should have been more strident in its representation of the industry during COVID. However, its history since 1944 means that it’s perceived as a regulator more than an advocate for airlines. A Centre for Aviation (CAPA) event held last year aired perspectives from some airline CEOs, and their message was clear: the industry’s emergence from COVID remains confused and evolving. While there may be a somewhat more straightforward path becoming evident as this issue goes to press, uncertainty with borders, vaccines and virus variants still drags on the industry.

The solution, we’re told by the experts, depends on collaboration and coordination. We’ve expressed our views about the lack of implementable detail in those maxims in our ‘New Usual’ video series – check them out on our website.

Nevertheless, we think the industry needs to re-start and move ahead based on managed design, not by reams of somewhat obvious recommendations for everyone to interpret, too often through different perspectives. We think because of its penultimate position and representative role, IATA should stand up for this gig. Although the people at the top don’t seem to be sure how it will evolve, let’s take a pragmatic look at how collaboration across the industry eco-system could position us for a more sustained recovery and even lay down a path toward the future (figure 6).

Statistics demonstrate that strategy is often confused, miscommunicated and not well executed by the airline industry. While that’s a bold statement, there are plenty of examples if anyone wants to ask. Imagine, though, a future where the industry provides high-level strategic leadership about operational nuance from which airlines can draw; delivering a lot of that non-proprietary, non-competitive stuff that Marcus discussed.

Picture a suite of tools, exchange standards, data sharing and collaborative capability that enables the industry to support operational strategies and outcomes, and reduce the bottlenecks, delays and scarcity issues that we were all grumbling about not so long ago. Imagine the same tools supporting airline operational strategies, improving the integration of departmental processes and data within the airline and, crucially, with new partners in the likely wave of mergers and global alliances that COVID will produce. Picture too, that airlines can draw from a library of industry-based leadership, data, information and knowledge, easing the repetitive, extensive and expensive turnover of knowledge acquisition and capability replicated by every airline in precisely the same way, over and over again. Airlines would return knowledge to the industry in a symbiotic connection that frees it of scarcity driven efficiency drains and delivers more of the lowhanging efficiencies most think are gone… except they’re not.

Remarkably, all this capability exists, and airlines could benefit from it today.

What doesn’t exist is the collective will and leadership to bring it together. This could be a profoundly beneficial program that could reset IATA. Hello, Mr Walsh?

Perception over strategy The status-quo

We all want to get back in the sky as soon as possible. There’s no doubt it is the highest priority for airlines, but we think how that is done will be crucial, lest the industry jumps straight from the colloquial ‘frying pan into the fire’. Remember the other issues constraining industry efficiency from part one?

So far, it seems perception management remains the focus for the road out of COVID, not the critical strategic outcomes required to rebuild the industry into a more robust, agile and resilient version of itself. Figure 7 represents the status quo.

In project management, we call this the ‘do nothing option’. While it’s a legitimate and proper project tool, we have to decide as an industry when we contemplate looking back from 2029 whether ‘do nothing’ was in the industry’s best interests.

We do a lot well, but there are some things we don’t. A lot of this discussion is

The collective contentment with the status quo comprehensively demonstrates that we’ve got some way to go. In the context of figure 8.1, strategic maturity is where an airline might rate itself on a strategy and system maturity scale, something like figure 8.1…

Airlines audit almost everything in the operational space. Why not the entire organization’s capability and readiness for change? We’ve included possible headings here, but these are typically client and project-dependent; no doubt, each reader’s will be different. Check the tiles that represent your degree of strategic maturity.

Drilling into a couple (figure 8.2), Closed Loop has written about the industry’s focus on technology and how reliance on technology as the panacea for everything is a handbrake on real efficiency. We know that there will be those who want to debate that point, but we have the models to demonstrate it, and we’ve talked

Focusing on level one, the ‘technology first, business second and ‘system’ somewhere down the road, if at all,’ emphasis of projects habitually disregards the business ‘system’ aspects in which the technology must reside. Rather than technology as an enabler of next-level capability; system, processes, or procedures often become constrained by it. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with particular technology; it’s usually the result of incomplete rationale, a lack of attention to the real problem. The lack of integration at this level is pivotal: the industry has a pressing need to deliver collaborative outcomes across the sector and the entire journey supply chain. The future will be data-driven and integrated, yet many of our technologies remain closed. The IATA Webinar, ‘Adapt and Grow’ on May 26, 2020, comprehensively discussed this as a significant industry dilemma. Data integration will be crucial to the solution, but how many are doing it? How many know what it really is? Suppliers are not at fault: we said in a recent blog that, in the absence of a lead from their customer base, Suppliers will develop what they

think we need, and they do that really well, so well, in fact, that it’s why the airlines tie their future vision to the next conference.

Conferences, like those organized by Aircraft Commerce, AircraftIT and others, provide instant gratification, seeing and touching the latest gadgets. Because it’s new every time, some airlines take years to figure out what they’re actually looking for. We’ve discussed the two-decade machinations some went through in their search for the EFB in previous articles. The struggle had nothing to do with technology; there were many capable EFB systems to choose from. The issue was the business case, and the difficulty with that emanated from a lack of systems thinking and future vision. The big problem with the current manner in which these things are approached is that without a plan, the increasing tempo of technology makes the sweet spot for a gadget ever shorter. So, focusing on technology alone becomes an ever recursive and ever-diminishing cycle. A tool like the maturity matrix illuminates the current state of an organization. It identifies the aspirational pathways needed to develop to the future state and the steps necessary to achieve them; it also helps drag thinking out of technology alone to a more infinite worldview — instead of what we think we need by this coming Friday.

A UNIFIED INDUSTRY

Stepping outside the cave and getting started on strategic objectives and plans for emergence from COVID and beyond isn’t a massive investment in monetary terms but one of will and leadership.

Airlines must look to the future instead of backwards to the past. They must choose now how 2019 and 2020 will be seen from some future vantage point. In 2029, traffic levels will have re-established, at least from COVID-19 and likely resumed the trajectory that created the obstacles in 2019. Depending on what we take from this pandemic, we may be better prepared next time. Will we be leveraging data and collaboration to combat the issues that we face, those issues that put a handbrake on our ability to operate efficiently and deliver other critical aspirations like our environmental stewardship? Or will the industry be a copy of the same, doing the same things we’ve always done but expecting a different outcome? As we plan our path out of COVID, getting planes in the air is but one aspect. It’s time to reimagine how we do many of the things we do and decide how they fit the industry we ‘see’ in 2029.

Leadership needs to come from the front; it needs to be strategic, planned, coordinated and facilitated. It needs to be from an advocate of the industry for the industry: not politicians or regulators. It needs to be ready with strategies and plans to guide airlines in planning and implementing the future. This gig belongs to IATA, and it’s up to airlines to tell them so. Here’s the perfect platform for IATA’s new leadership to reenergize the organization.

Facilities and capabilities grew quickly in response to demand and our fast support services. By 1998, ASG was certified as an FAA-PMA approved facility and expanded to include other locations. However, as all of us were facing similar issues in working with digital

documentation in our respective functions at the time, we decided to come up with Yonder Mind — a solution dedicated to simplifying digital documentation altogether, for both editors and end-users.

TV: Although aircraft are highly advanced technical systems, the full potential of digitization still hasn’t reached every corner of aviation yet — certainly not the documentation domain. Aircraft IT: What is the guiding business principle that drives Yonder?

TV: We take pride in being a solution provider, as opposed to just being a software provider: We actively support our customers in their digital transformation journey and even convert their legacy documentation into truly digital content. We do so in a transparent manner and without applying any hidden costs whatsoever.

Aircraft IT: What has been Yonder’s greatest technical achievement to date, and why?

TV: Creating a differential importer for OEM documentation. That’s a big deal because it breaks the separation between manual editors and subject

matter experts. However, creating the differential xml importer was quite a challenge; especially for manuals originating from some OEMs, due to the inconsistent quality of the raw data we receive.

Aircraft IT: What has been Yonder’s greatest business achievement to date, and why?

TV: With 2020 being the most challenging year for aviation to date, we still managed to close substantial deals with multiple large airlines and even an entire airline group. That’s reassuring indeed and a clear indication that Yonder’s approach to lean documentation management in aviation not only helps to save costs, but also provides additional benefits that remain unmatched by other solutions.

Aircraft IT: What have been Yonder’s disappointments and what have you learned from them?

TV: Luckily, we haven’t had memorable disappointments so far. Worth mentioning is, that some of our customers requested a big-bang transition from their legacy solution(s) to Yonder Mind. Considering all of the dependencies involved when dealing with an airline’s documentation, we certainly face extraordinary challenges whenever this scenario applies. Challenges that involve many workarounds and call for an extraordinary team effort altogether indeed. But, as previously mentioned, we are a solution provider that will always go the extra mile for our customers. On another note, occasionally I get asked, “why can’t we just use SharePoint and upload PDFs?” Hearing that after several interactions during the sales process makes me doubt whether people truly understand what digitization of documentation is all about.

Aircraft IT: In a sentence, how would you summarize what Yonder does for aviation customers?

TV: We provide end-to-end digitization of all documentation processes — from creating and

publishing content, all the way to revising it based on an end-user’s role and mission: Yonder Mind delivers reliable, role-based information to frontline employees at all times — both via web client and the offline app that is available for tablets and smartphones.

Aircraft IT: What is new on Yonder’s development horizon?

TV: Reusing information without physical duplication, is one of Yonder Mind’s key concepts.

Yonder Mind fully supports the reuse of xml modules, e.g., to create OM-Bs from the manufacturer’s FCOM. But the implied benefits go far beyond this particular use case, which is why we’re contemplating advanced reuse functions that further push the boundaries of what digitization in the documentation domain is capable of.

Aircraft IT: What will be the next big thing in Aviation IT? TV: In operational systems, we observe a transition to cloud-based solutions. We fully back this trend and are convinced that this shift will transform aviation IT in the foreseeable future. Moreover, there are still too many legacy IT systems around that neither communicate nor properly integrate with each other. For cost efficiency’s sake, this has to stop. Meanwhile, large integrated software suites claiming to do it all won’t solve this issue. For that reason, we are following an open-interface strategy that allows for third party systems to further enhance Yonder Mind’s capabilities to the end users benefit. One system we interface with successfully is IQSMS — most of our airline customers in fact use this integration.
