Green Pilot is born!

Aviation represents 2% to 5% of

global emissions. Our planet is choking, and humanity needs to act quickly to reduce its impact on the environment. The air transport sector has been taking measures for years and international plans were adopted to reduce its carbon emissions. However, the sector is growing so much that its impact is increasing anyway. But could we not go further in the industry’s actions?

OpenAirlines believes that a more sustainable way of living and traveling is possible. They believe that a greener aviation model can be created by acting collectively and making further efforts. This collective movement, announced in mid-April 2021 is called Green Pilot.

Organizational change in Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS

Scandinavian Avionics Design ApS (SAD) — Part of The SA Group; has been preparing for a generation change in the management roles for more than a year, in order to secure a smooth transition and retention of vital experience and knowhow

throughout the organization. After celebrating his 40th anniversary as an employee within The SA Group, Erling L. Linneberg, expressed a natural desire to start the handover of management responsibilities to his successor — a handover process that is now complete after The SA Group received the final approval from EASA on a new management structure announced in mid-February 2021.

“Erling has been with The SA Group since the beginning and his solution oriented and flexible mindset along with his likeable personality has been a huge contributor to The SA Group and where we are today. That is also why we are happy that Erling is staying onboard, taking on a more detail-oriented role as a Special Programs Engineer for the years to come”, said Hardy B. Truelsen, Head of The SA Group.

Erling L. Linneberg continued: “My work life with The SA Group has been a journey of a lifetime, and I am happy that I can now step down into a position where I can make my experience count and go back to where it all started — designing and delivering customeroriented solutions in the individual projects”.

To take over from Erling, The SA Group was very excited to announce that Troels M. Lund is now formally approved as Head of Design, after joining the team back in 2018, with the ambition to grow into this position. Troels has now obtained sufficient knowledge about The SA Group’s system and procedures and with his more than 30 years of aviation experience in multiple management roles, he is very happy to be back in the design environment, where his heart truly lies.

“I am, first of all, an avionics engineer by heart, and I have found that my passion is best exploited within the DOA area, where I have spent a vast part of my time in aviation. Working in an organization like The SA Group, where we have an extremely versatile customer segment, and strive to push boundaries every day, is a perfect fit for me”, said Troels M. Lund.

In addition to the Head of Design role, also shifting role is the Chief Executive position, where Michael R. Truelsen is taking over from his father, Hardy B. Truelsen. “We are in the midst of our generation change in The SA Group as a whole, and this is a natural next step, where Michael will take over as Chief Executive”, said Hardy B. Truelsen.

This is not a sign of retirement from Hardy B. Truelsen, but Hardy is to focus more on sales and business development tasks going forward.

An overview of Organizational

AeroLogic relies on AviationDW

Airlines, like almost every other industry, are more and more facing the

problem of being flooded with data. The challenge is to make this data accessible for the ongoing improvement processes. With CrossConsense, Aerologic now found a partner who will support the cargo airline in bringing additional structure to the mass of data that can be drawn from AeroLogic’s MRO backend system AMOS. AeroLogic already uses standard off-the-shelf BI tools and has simply attached AviationDW as an additional data source. Behind the scenes, the AviationDW data transformation jobs are running to prepare raw backend MRO system data for easy access. Data is exported by AMOS and sent to AviationDW. The full control over all data export activity stays with AeroLogic.

AeroLogic signed a contract with CrossConsense not only for the data ingestion process provisioning but also for hosting of the data warehouse and support provided by CrossConsense. As AeroLogic already is an AMOS Support Customer of CrossConsense the partnership between the two companies is of mutual benefit because the cargo airline will also support CrossConsense to further develop the functionalities of AviationDW. Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores add Comply365’s ProAuthor for end-to-end content authoring and distribution

In late February 2021, Aviation software leader Comply365 was pleased to announce its two newest airline customers, Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores, who both will soon leverage the power of streamlined compliance management and improve collaboration and efficiency

with Comply365 solutions.

The airlines, both part of the SATA Group based in the Portuguese Autonomous Region of The Azores, recently acquired ProAuthor, Comply365’s end-to-end operational content and compliance management system that enables faster, more routine manual revisions, and enables airlines to always be audit ready.

“We were looking for a manual authoring and delivery solution that would offer a better way to manage our compliance with EASA regulations and IOSA standards as well as provide our flight crews with a great mobile experience,” said Mário Chaves, COO of the SATA Group. “After thoroughly researching the market, it was evident that the value Comply365 would bring to our operations, as well as their innovative team, was the right solution.”

Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores operate a fleet of Airbus A320 and A321, and De Havilland Dash 8-Q200 and Q400 aircraft, respectively, providing passenger and cargo services within the Azores and international flights to destinations in Europe, North America, and Africa.

While airlines typically spend months preparing for audits using legacy systems, ProAuthor will significantly reduce that time by tracing the manual content with corresponding regulatory standards. By providing the ability to tag standards and automatically run reports, the airlines will always be prepared for audits. ProAuthor will replace rudimentary word processing solutions at the pair of airlines, where technical publications staff will now

save time during the authoring process by reusing shared content across manuals in both airlines.

“We’re happy to welcome two Azorean airlines to our global Comply365 community, and we look forward to providing a great user experience for their crews,” Comply365 CEO Tom Samuel said. “We’ve proven the value of a unified system for our customers with multiple AOCs, so we’re excited for Azores Airlines and SATA Air Açores to realize the efficiency gains and increased collaboration they will see when they’re both operating within the Comply365 system.”

Comply365’s solutions will provide a consistent end-user experience that reduces training and support, as well as increasing accuracy and safety by enabling frontline operators to navigate fewer systems for manuals and operational data. Pilots and flight attendants will receive more personalized and relevant content through effectivity tagging that enables filtering and searching based on aircraft, parts or other tags specific to the airlines’ operations.

About Comply365: Comply365 is the leading provider of enterprise SaaS and mobile solutions for content management and document distribution in highly regulated industries including aviation, rail, and energy. The business supports the world’s most mobile and remote workforces with targeted and personalized delivery of job-critical data that enables safe, efficient, and compliant operations. Every day, hundreds of thousands of pilots, flight attendants, maintenance technicians, rail conductors and engineers, as well as energy workforce rely on Comply365 for digital delivery of operational content, including OEM and internal company manuals. Having played an instrumental role in the regulatory approval of electronic flight bags (EFB) to replace the traditional, paper-based, pilot flight bags, Comply365 partners with clients to transform their industries.

About Sata Group: The SATA Group has been involved in air transport, airfield management, and ground-handling services for all airlines landing on Azorean soil since 1941. Its fleet is divided between SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines, operating flights to the mainland and islands, Europe, Cape Verde, the United States, and Canada, with a combined network of codeshare and interline flights.

Azores Airlines is now renewing its fleet with the Airbus 321neo and Airbus 321neo LR, airplanes able to substantially reduce the carbon footprint of each passenger, reduce costs per flight and continue the company’s growth strategy that includes the mission of taking the Azores to the World and the World to the Azores.

The SATA universe is complete with SATA Gestão de Aeródromos, a company in charge of managing various airport infrastructures in the Azores.

IATA members, SATA Group’s airlines, as well as its Maintenance and Engineering and Handling businesses, have seen their teams’ merit and professionalism rewarded with the sector’s most distinguished certifications.

Garmin® International, Inc announced in mid-April 2021, European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) approval of an Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) solution for the ATR 42 and ATR 72

turboprop aircraft. To achieve this certification, Garmin worked closely with Scandinavian Avionics, who developed and certified a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) that provides operators an economical solution with efficient installation and low downtime. Operators now have an attractive option to equip their aircraft and achieve compliance, which is required prior to June 7, 2023.

“We are proud to continue providing solutions to Air Transport customers worldwide and build upon our growing portfolio of ADS-B solutions that address the needs of this category of aircraft,” said Carl Wolf, Garmin vice president of aviation sales and marketing. “Garmin continues to pioneer the industry on a global scale with a broad range of ADS-B solutions that span all segments of aviation, and we are excited to provide these commercial aircraft with a reliable and cost-effective all-in-one technology solution for years to come.”

“This is the second ADS-B solution we have done with Garmin, targeted at the airline segment, and it is a joy to work with Garmin’s excellent team to make all of this come together. Knowing the importance of short downtime for these aircraft, we have designed a kit solution that will enable a very short

installation time — and this is offered at a very competitive price. We are very proud to offer such a flexible and comprehensive solution, and we have great expectations for the market response.” said Michael Truelsen, Scandinavian Avionics CEO

The ADS-B upgrade for the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft includes a GPS 3000 ADS-B compliant position source and dual GTX 3000 ADS-B Out transponders, and a complete installation kit comprised of a pre-wired shelf harness, fully manufactured brackets and other installation materials provided by Scandinavian Avionics. This solution is designed to easily interface to existing equipment on board the aircraft, reducing installation time and lowering the overall cost of compliance. Together, the GPS 3000 and GTX 3000 serve as a rugged, standalone ADS-B Out solution that meets the stringent demands of Transport Category aircraft around the globe. The Scandinavian Avionics ADS-B STC covers all models -500 and earlier.

Designed and certified by Scandinavian Avionics, the STC and slide-in rack contain all of the necessary Garmin equipment and paperwork for the ADS-B Out solution. Scandinavian Avionics has completed the initial installation on both the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft. Air Alsie, a European ATR and Dassault operator, is the first customer to install this solution on their ATR 72-500 aircraft.

The GPS 3000 and GTX 3000 Garmin ADS-B Out solution for the ATR 42 and ATR 72 aircraft has received EASA approval and is available immediately.

Garmin’s aviation business segment is a leading provider of solutions to OEM, aftermarket, military and government customers. Garmin’s portfolio includes navigation, communication, flight control, hazard avoidance, an expansive suite of ADS-B solutions and other products and services that are known for innovation, reliability, and value.

skybook EFB — Enhanced Pilot Briefing

It’s product launch time at Bytron Aviation Systems as the latest version of their already award winning EFB application takes to the skies around the world with a host of new features that all aim to directly address some of the most challenging aspects of

aviation.

Rather than making some bold statements around the all new ‘next gen’ EFB and listing endless functions, Bytron thought they would take a different approach and talk about the problems and challenges that the latest skybook Electronic Flight Bag app, announced in mid-April 2021, sets out to directly address in order to help operators achieve much more than simply ‘going paperless’ by giving pilots a digital briefing. Let’s start with the following…

What’s changed in the EFB and what does it address?

Bytron’s customers and the aviation industry are looking towards the future for new improvements and bigger performance gains. They want to extract every possible benefit and in the case of Bytron’s clients, with skybook sitting firmly at the center of flight dispatch and operations, flight deck and maintenance, they are looking for new gains to further improve overall performance and drive additional savings.

Operators are looking way beyond the original objectives of improving crew briefings by removing paper and are now pushing forward to create fully connected applications that share vital information pre-flight, during the flight and then post flight in order to deliver: • Workload and labor reductions through automated briefing creation, data import and sharing; • Improved global awareness through fully tailored interactive briefings; • Access to global NOTAM, Weather and Airport data via a single portal; • Improved situational awareness, faster problem identification and increase situational awareness; • Improved accuracy and increased data capturing across all sectors; • Automated information sharing in real time post flight; • Integrated tech log for real time sharing of information between flight deck and engineering; • Aircraft Interfacing to automate data capture; • Post flight reporting and analytics; • Device sync for seamless data sharing between pilots and engineering teams. It could go further but to summarize, if you’re looking for an EFB and only focusing on flight deck benefits, you run the risk of falling behind the curve and being outperformed by your rivals. Taking all of the above into account, what can you expect in Bytron’s enhanced EFB application?

What’s changed following the latest enhancements?

The focus has been on five main areas here as follows: 1. Usability; 2. Adaptability; 3. Flexibility; 4. Integration; 5. Awareness/decision making.

To that end Bytron has made the latest version of the skybook Electronic Flight Bag more user friendly with much improved human/machine interfacing throughout each module. Navigation throughout the app has been improved to reduce the number of clicks required to perform key tasks and also to ensure that effective workflows are created that help operators drive efficiency on the flight deck by reducing pilot workloads. skybook is able to integrate fully with more third-party applications and systems than ever before and most importantly, the launch of the all-new Form Builder module means that operators can create tailored digital forms and also manage the onward development of the EFB and eTech Log apps in house — something that sets Bytron’s applications firmly apart from others on the market.

What’s new in the skybook Electronic Flight Bag app?

Knowledge is power — fact. Without it there are too many variables, and you simply cannot make the right decisions. This is why the latest version of the skybook EFB is Bytron’s most powerful application to date bringing vital sector information together in one place for pilots to review prior to departure. Aside from increased integration options to bring all briefing data into the skybook EFB, enhanced configuration and tailoring through the Form Builder technology, and a revised user interface to make the application easier and quicker to navigate, the revised application features a brand-new global mapping tool that puts an entire world of information in the palm of the pilot’s hand. The new Mapping Module enables pilots to bring the most

vital information together in one place helping them to review the entire route for each sector in detail, all within a single screen. They can select from a number of additional filters which depict a range of real time weather conditions and updates which helps to ensure they are able to quickly identify potential problems and look at the actual impact on the route being flown.

The all-new mapping module is the most powerful new addition to Bytron’s already class leading crew briefing, allowing pilots to review the following at the touch of a button: Icing; Turbulence; Lightning; Hurricane; Surface; Ash; Waypoint data (WPT name, flight level, timings and fuel data); Airfield Alerts (real time METAR, TAF and NOTAM information).

A series of highly intuitive sliders and filters ensure that pilots can very easily switch between information, flight levels and flight times to help them better assess the actual impact of weather, for example, on their route. This will be vital when it comes to making decisions that could affect the flight. Furthermore, Bytron’s tailored briefing packs are already engineered to highlight weather and NOTAM issues based on pre-defined operator configuration which means that skybook will also be actively alerting pilots to emerging problems that could impact on the airports featuring in the sector being flown. The real time data provided above is included as part of a skybook EFB package subscription and can be refreshed at any time to provide pilots with the very latest information.

Operating sectors safely is paramount for all pilots making the skybook EFB a vital flight deck addition. Read the full story on Aircraft IT Website

skybook EFB — Enhanced Journey Logging

As you’ve already seen above, the skybook Electronic Flight Bag application has received some serious love in recent months and, as a result, is more powerful, user friendly and effective than

ever before. This news piece will turn the focus to Journey Logging and how Bytron has been able to make their award-winning app even better for core users — pilots… Let’s take a walk through what’s changed and why.

Improved Data Capture

When it comes to data capture, Bytron’s EFB already leads the way so the latest enhancements only serve to strengthen the performance of this flight deck companion. Revised navigation and user interfacing again help make the app more intuitive to use and, thanks to increased flexibility, Bytron is now able to go even further when it comes to creating efficient workflows that help maximize productivity whilst reducing unrequired button pressing.

Any fields that aren’t needed can simply be removed and mandatory capture points are easy to create and highly visible to ensure operators extract all vital data from each flight. Thanks to Form Builder, new tailored forms and reports can also be created and accessed for use across skybook in a matter of minutes which further enhances our ability to create detailed comprehensive insights across each and every sector.

Improved data sharing

As mentioned in the earlier news piece, if you are building a business case for EFB’s on the flight deck and your focus is too narrow, you will be missing the opportunity to deliver far wider savings and improvements across wider teams and departments. Bytron’s more holistic approach sees them focusing on pre-flight data collection and import, briefing creation and delivery, data capture during the flight and then data sharing post flight. Ideally, the aim is to integrate and automate as much as possible. By looking more widely at how this vital information is collated, shared, reviewed, updated and then used after the flight, users are able to achieve far more significant savings and improvements that will help to: • Increase insights and make all actual data usable; • Make data captured available in real time for wider departments; • Improve efficiencies by removing onward data input requirements; • Improve data quality and accuracy; • Help improve performance and turnaround times; With skybook at the center of your team, your teams will be more productive, efficient and above all, armed with all information required to take performance to the next level.

Automated Tech Log population

It is no secret that Bytron’s all new eTech Log application is due out soon and once live, this will make skybook the most comprehensive solution on the market. As part of this preparation, Bytron have made the changes needed to ensure that all Tech Log applicable information captured by the crew as part of the Journey Log will automatically sync with the eTech Log app in order to remove the need for double keying of information and help drive further workload reductions on the flight deck. This intelligent functionality is not reserved solely for the eTech Log though, as the skybook EFB application can also be integrated with third party applications in order to help achieve a similar outcome.

Bytron’s eTech Log application is set to be a very powerful addition to the skybook range and they are keen to let operators get hands on in order to see how effective it is in the real world so if you would like to jump the queue and become a development partner, Bytron invites you to talk.

Benefits include being amongst the first to put Bytron’s eTL through its paces, the chance to actively shape development of the app and to ensure your requirements feature from day one to make it even more effective.

If you want to know more, Bytron are more than happy to help so to arrange a call and demo. Read the full story on Aircraft IT Website

Evoke Systems launch new dark mode on EFOS for iPad

In late April 2021, Evoke Systems were delighted to announce they have launched

dark mode for their EFOS iPad app. Initially rolling out across their Journey Log module, which is part of the EFOS Flight Management Suite, it is anticipated that dark mode will be available across all EFOS iPad modules by the end of the year. With research showing it offers many health benefits, including reduced eye strain, dark mode is fast becoming the norm in modern-day digital products. Working in collaboration with their customers, Evoke has designed a dark mode that is easily and instantly accessible for their clients, with careful consideration given to color palettes, functionality, and the ability to roll this out to other iOS modules across their three product suites in the future.

“Dark mode is a feature that has been highly requested by our customers using the EFOS iPad app. Here at Evoke we are passionate about continuously improving the EFOS experience for our users and working collaboratively with them when developing new features. The new dark mode eliminates bright fill colors to reduce eye strain, and live data validation rules within EFOS are supported by tinted text which brings attention to those important notifications and mandatory data fields. Using this approach, we have created a color palette for the dark theme that could then be reverse engineered for the existing light theme, which our EFOS users know and love. Under the hood we use a semantic color system that allows us to easily switch between dark and light themes at any point, aiding our ability to roll this new feature out to our other iOS modules across the product suites quickly and efficiently, providing a consistent user interface and experience across the app.” said Evoke Senior iOS Developer, Craig Walker.

EFOS for iPad app is comprised of many modules, all of which solve distinct customer problems. The Electronic Journey Log (EJL) allows crew to record their flight and duty information digitally using the iPad, fulfilling regulatory compliance for Commander reporting and allowing for valuable operational and business data to be captured. Custom data entry controls coupled with live validation throughout the data entry process allow gross errors to be configured, improving the accuracy and quality of data recorded. Digital records eliminate illegible, error-prone, and expensive paper processes, with access to vital data providing powerful analysis opportunities into areas such as fuel burn, OTP and safety and event reporting. The EJL can be completed offline, with all information captured syncing to the EFOS server once connectivity is restored post-flight.

Air Moldova and NAVBLUE take a step further towards big data in flight operations

Air Moldova, the national airline of Moldova, announced in late April 2021 that it has signed up for the recently launched application of the OPTIMIZE suite: the Performance Factor Optimizer

(PFO). This brand-new digital application, connected to the Airbus Skywise platform, offers a significant improvement to the existing Aircraft Performance Monitoring (APM) process.

Niko Lukian, technical pilot at Air Moldova and primary focal point for the implementation of this solution, explained why they chose the Performance Factor Optimizer solution and what were the benefits.

Q: What benefits do you perceive compared to your existing process? A: Thanks to this investment on innovation and technology, we have proven fuel burn decreases, which contributes to our sustainability objectives. Performance Factor Optimizer solution is much more efficient since: the data is always updated after each flight, which was not the case in our previous process, and it takes less time to perform the necessary tasks.

Q: How smooth was the deployment of the solution in your operation once the data was integrated? A: It was really smooth and we collaborated to integrate additional data into Skywise for the whole fleet. We observed the system learns and adapts after it gathers more data and we saw which results in a continuous improvement of the accuracy of the results.

Q: How satisfied are you with the support received? A: Since the first time we saw the solution we have received excellent support from NAVBLUE. The support team was always very responsive to help us with any question or request.

Q: There are many suppliers in the market for performance solutions. Why did you choose NAVBLUE? A: Other performance solutions exist but they are not as automated as the Performance Factor Optimizer. Additionally, we believe that NAVBLUE is the best in terms of performance solutions, and we are very satisfied with the onboard performance application (Flysmart+), a NAVBLUE solution that we are also using.

Lufthansa Systems launches new solution to optimize (multi-)hub networks

Lufthansa Systems announced, in late April 2021, the launch of the NetLine/ HubDesigner, an optimizer that generates profitable (multi-)hub networks, optimizes fleet utilization, and creates the ideal bank structure at a single hub or in a multi-hub

environment. Based on advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, the solution harmonizes supply and demand while considering operational restrictions. This results in a schedule that is operationally feasible, perfectly suited to meet demand, and generates maximum network profitability. The new solution paves the way for more efficient, data-driven decisions in the recovery phase and well beyond.

The solution was developed in response to the current market situation, where demand and the competitive landscape are subject to dynamic and sweeping change in the short term. Even airlines operating based on hub-and-spoke business models now have to adjust or completely redesign their networks more frequently, more radically, and closer to the day of departure. “Optimizers are needed to create and maintain a profitable bank structure for a (multi-)hub environment, which takes into account demand, competition and operational restrictions and enables airlines to tap market opportunities,” said Judith Semar, Product Owner

NetLine/HubDesigner generates a schedule with maximum network profitability.

Schedule Optimization at Lufthansa Systems. “When market conditions change drastically, networks need to be redesigned from scratch. The NetLine/ HubDesigner generates the most profitable O&D network, known as the point of origin and destination approach, without having to resort to existing schedules.”

Besides the clean-sheet network optimization approach, the NetLine/ HubDesigner delivers integrated rather than isolated optimization results as it combines three optimizers in one solution: 1. Hub optimization maximizes passenger services in terms of times, connections, and frequencies. The optimizer designs the best hub bank structure offering the optimal frequencies and connection times; 2. Fleet assignment ensures the most profitable use of a fleet: The optimizer efficiently assigns aircraft to routes while taking revenue and cost structures into account; 3. Rotation optimization generates reliable aircraft rotations:

The rotation optimizer creates a rotation schedule that accounts for operational and commercial demands by considering aspects such as airport slots, maintenance requirements and airport restrictions. Western Global Airlines uses Comply365 for Document Management
