Giocare, provocare, esprimersi è il carattere che trasborda dalle vesti di Debra Rapoport. Non possiamo parlare di abiti, nè di mascheramenti, le sue performances della quotidianità sono sculture mobili e fluttuanti. Hanno gli scarti e la bellezza Newyorkese. Debra porta con sè il respiro dell’ombelico del mondo. Un’artista ecclettica, arcimboldiana, futurista e vittoriana insieme.

I suoi rutilanti copricapo di feltro e oggetti di scarto sono un inno al vivere quotidiano ma con il suo stile. Eccessiva e viva, estetica e spiritosa, instancabile performer dell’eccentrico rappresenta il melting pot e la vivacità della Grande Mela. È considerata un’autentica icona, capace di usare l’ornamento come cura in modo originale e autentico. In lei convivono l’eccesso e l’ingenuità, la bellezza di chi esplora gli abissi con gli occhi trasparenti. Le sue sono opere in cammino, dinamiche e fluide dove la banalità e l’abbandono dell’oggetto assurge a nobile espressione della creatività e forse aspira alla improbabile immortalità. Ciò che rimane è il sorriso, il colore, la forma cambiata di quello che non è più. Questione di stile.

Debra Rapoport. Born NYC 1945

As a visual/performance artist, I call what I do “Dressing Up, Over and Again!” Working with non-traditional and re-purposed materials, I create embellishments and head gear for the body. Everything’s a hat, be it a lampshade, a vase or a paper bag. With a hat you have Hatitude. It’s also about “Framing the Face” and that can be done with a BOA, BIB or BREASTPLATE as well as a hat. “Frugality is Fun” so rather than consume I’d rather re-invent and curate my closet. This transcends fashion into personal style. I believe “Style is Healing” because you are in relationship with and expressing Your Self. SELF first. “Dress to De-stress”. “Hand to mouth is better than 9-5” because I’ve always been an independent artist! These are my meditations and mantras.

My creations start with my A/B/C s, Assembling, Building and Constructing for the body incorporating color, texture and layering.

I have been featured in the film Advanced Style as well as the 3 Advanced Style books and Advanced Style TEDx talk with Ari Seth Cohen (Amsterdam 2014.)

I have taught at University of California, Davis, New York University, MAD and MOMA. My work is in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, NYC, L.A. County Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Helen Williams Drutt Collection, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum, Athens, Greece, Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, Russia.
