AIIC is a leading independent co-educational Islamic college – offering educational opportunities across three campuses. AIIC’s goal in education is to establish a caring Islamic environment where every student is known, valued and supported to learn, improve and achieve. All students are encouraged to participate in a full range of school activities including students with desabilities who are provided awith dditional support and adjustments in order to fully participate. AIIC takes great pride in catering to children of recent immigrant and refugee families, representing more than 30 countries with different languages and cultures. More than 90% of students are EAL/D learnersand AIIC is rich in cultural diversity. AIIC operates from the following three (3) campuses. •Durack Campus Enrolment 640 (August 2019 Census) •Gold Coast Campus Enrolment 145 (August 2019 Census) •City Campus Enrolment 24 (August 2019 Census) The growth in enrolments in 2019 is more than 16%.

Durack Campus The Durack Campus is located near the fast growing adjacent suburbs of Durack, Doolandella and Richlands, giving AIIC the challenge of accommodating up to a 20% increase in enrolments each year. With the generous Capital Building Grants from the State and Federal Governments, the Durack Campus has built five (5) permanent classroom buildings, a large multipurpose hall and a modern library. The Durack Campus has replaced all its demountable buildings with permanent buildings. These are very well equipped with modern learning resources including interactive whiteboards. The implementation of the new Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) system. AIIC implemented the new QCE system for year 11 students in 2019. The new system will equip school leavers with 21st century skills they need to become innovators, entrepreneurs and lifelong learners. 4

The opening of the STEM building at Durack Campus in 2019 has provided state of the art laboratories including a: •Physics Laboratory (Dry Lab) •Chemistry Laboratory (Wet Lab) •Biology Laboratory (Wet Lab) •Innovation Hub for robotics (also used by the AIIC Robotics Club) •Information and Digital Technology Centre •STEM Resource Centre The STEM building is equipped with the most modern resources for conducting experiments related to engineering, digital technology/solutions, chemistry and physics.

Gold Coast Campus 2020 the Gold Coast Campus had 123 students enrolled in Primary and 11 students in Secondary. The Gold Coast Campus has fourteen (14) teachers and two (2) teacher aides.

The permanent Primary school building at the Gold Coast Campus is scheduled to commence construction late in 2020, ready for occupation in early 2021. The permanent Primary building will provide one large purpose-built preparatory classroom and six (6) spacious primary classrooms with interactive whiteboards. The completion of the permanent Primary building will allow AIIC to accommodate the growing needs of Muslim students in the fastest growing city in Australia.

City Campus The City Campus is located in Buranda, offering primary education to the local community. The City Campus has relatively small enrolments, catering for nearby residents’ children who do not want their young children spending too much time in travelling to and from the Durack Campus.

‫العالم� والصالة والسالم عىل ش‬ ‫ي ن‬ ‫أ�ف األنبياء‬ ‫الحمد هللا رب‬ AIIC’s annual Yearbook is an opportunity to illustrate the wide range of activities and accomplishments that are produced during the academic year by the leadership team, teachers, students and staff members. The 2020 academic year witnessed unprecedented events! Our academic year commenced with a terrible drought followed by bushfires and floods. We thought that the worst was over until we were struck with a pandemic that spread across the world without discrimination. The Covid 19 pandemic temporarily closed mosques, schools, universities and many places of business. It closed borders and quarantined people as it spread through every nation on Earth bringing economic devastation wherever it went. Covid enforced social distancing that caused a gap in our lines of Salat and stopped many of us from celebrating Eid. None of us had ever suspected that we would ever have such a disempowering experience. Initially, all our educational programs were affected causing us to close our schools. We thank our Principal Mrs Christine Harman and her leadership team for managing the school during this pandemic as well as possible with: • Online teaching • Weekly worksheet distribution • A camping and mountain climbing recreational program • Campfire and fun activities • A very different drive through Iftar, Ramadan and Eid activities One of the important milestones this year at AIIC was the introduction of the Vocational Education & Training (VET) Program. This is the first time this program has been introduced in any Islamic School in Australia. We thank Ms Susan Fletcher for her great initiatives and efforts in this program. Another important initiative was the establishment of the Bush School concept. Bush school allowed our students to attend, observe and appreciate natural surroundings and learn about bush life, bush farming, bird and marine life. In all five (5) Bush classrooms were established. I am very sure our children have picked up exciting and enjoyable lessons from these activities. Our students produced excellent results this year. I am proud of our students’ sharp improvement in academic performance and I welcome our new enrolments. We are humbled by the great support of the parents during this academic year. A special word of thanks to the parents, our P&C members, our educators and our Board members who have all worked tirelessly for AIIC. I have stated in my previous messages that we are a self-critical governing body. We are always looking for ways to improve and maximise our performance. We know that there is always potential to learn and improve. Due to the Pandemic, we had to postpone many of our activities including: • Our blessed program of welcoming local and international visitors and dignitaries • Our sister school exchange program from Bogor, Nigari, Pandang Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. I would like to take this opportunity to again thank and congratulate our Principal and leadership team and all the teachers and admin/support staff, our students and their parents for their great effort and cooperation during this extraordinary testing time. Abu Huraira reported that Nabi Mohammed (SAW) said: “A believer is not bitten twice from the one burrow”. (Bukhari and Muslim). From this Hadith my friends, the English language developed the expression: once bitten, twice shy, it means that you take care out there.

It is a blessing to have successfully completed another year here at the Australian International Islamic College. As we have moved throughout these years we have made much progress, bringing our beloved school out of de-mountable classrooms, where in their place we have established secure state of the art buildings for our entrusted teachers and community to benefit from. I would like to inform those who are interested about the great upcoming works that are to begin in 2021 as the board has proposed to invest in the infrastructure of the community’s great establishment. An allocation of $10 million has been directed towards the following plan: • • • • • •

Classrooms across all campuses, Hospitality facility, Performance hall, Road works, Buranda Extension, Installation of Security Systems including CCTV.

We are also working towards bringing Islamic education further out into the community with our goal to build a Logan Campus, currently being planned, coming soon this 2021. I would sincerely like to thank the past and present chairman, principles, board members and our entire team that have worked together diligently towards the vision of bringing Islamic education to our community. I would especially like to mention and acknowledge Shaheed Khan & Dr Abdul M Ziyath for their outstanding work in bringing projects and plans together. I would also like to mention my fellow colleagues Salih Fataar & Mohammed Arif, to whom I send my thanks and appreciation for their service, endurance and contribution to our community. I would also like to thank and acknowledge Imam Abdul Qudoos Azhari on founding this great struggle, in our vision to educate and raise generations of Muslims to become great leaders and excel in their journeys through life. I thank Allah S.W.T. and ask that all our Duas and efforts be accepted, and that we continue on the straight path with the purest intentions. Message from Principal As the Principal of Australian International Islamic College, it is my honour to be celebrating, and reflecting on the tremendous year that 2020 has been for our College. When we commenced the academic year back in January, none of us could have predicted what the year had in store for us. And while it is easy to become despondent, and disheartened on the year that brought us COVID-19 and the flow on impact of that, I choose to reflect on all that this year has afforded us. 2020 will always be remembered as the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. We saw devastation sweep around the globe. COVID 19 did not discriminate; it targeted men, women, children, the wealthy, the impoverished and the elderly. It decimated communities, wiped out economies and brought the globe to a screeching halt. But, through all of this, we have prevailed. Whilst we peek tentatively towards the distant future, where the stranglehold of COVID-19 is eased, it is also time to look back, at all that we achieved, and all that we have learnt. This year, we celebrate all that it is to be a family. We learnt to value the family we have, and to cherish all those who make up our family and our community. We learnt that a school is far more than four walls and text books- a school is a learning community, unbound by buildings; indeed a school can be anywhere we chose to make it. This year at Australian International Islamic College we rallied together to support one another in the toughest of times and have come out stronger and more resilient. We have seen a consistent surge in enrolments, proving that this is a College where students and families want to be. We have seen a steady increase and retention of qualified, experienced and energetic educators; we have established new departments to cater to the changing needs of our students, ensuring we produce young citizens who are ready to confidently give back to their community. In short, AIIC has grown and matured in 2020 in spite of the challenges and this is something I am tremendously proud of. I would like to take this opportunity to extend my gratitude to the dedicated and respected educators, who, in a matter of days adapted all that they do to ensure that our children were not disadvantaged through remote learning. Their resilience, and flexibility, coupled with their dedication to their students reminded me why it is we are in the business of education children. To our families, who embraced me as your new Principal, I will be forever grateful. I am a firm believer that you are exactly where you are meant to be, in spite of the challenges. And finding myself leading this great school has proven that for me this year. The parents, students and staff of AIIC have welcomed and accepted me without hesitation, at a time when fear would dictate otherwise. Together, we have prospered while others have struggled; we have rallied together whilst others disseminated; we have embodied what it means to be a truly Islamic community. I am often asked what has been the toughest challenge of 2020, and what has been the highlight. Interestingly, the answer is somewhat the same. The hardest part of 2020 has been dealing with the unknown; of being brave in the face of such uncertainty; of being separated from our students at a time when we wanted nothing more than to have them close and to comfort them. But this uncertainty has also proven to be the greatest highlight- it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t the academic results, or the awards that stand out for me; rather, it was welcoming our students back, each and every day and seeing their bright faces, eager to learn, eager to give back to their community and eager to embrace all that we are here at AIIC. I look forward to building on the tremendous achievements, relationships and trusting foundation we have built this year, and we move into 2021. Message from Head of Primary Assalamlu alaikum wahrahmatullahi wahbarakatahu No one is going to say that 2020 has not had its ups and downs - we will never forget the challenges that teaching through a pandemic brought us. We started the year with lots of eager students and happy faces only to say ‘See you later’ when students had to work from home and teachers were behind their laptop screens. Teachers worked together to produce home learning packs but there is no substitute for a teacher and coming back to classroom learning and learning in a community. The return was welcomed by all members of the College community but especially by the teachers and students. Our teachers then spent time getting to know what work students had and had not done, which concepts they understood, and which needed more work and reinforcement. A big ‘Thank you’ for all your support through a very difficult time, it’s amazing what we can achieve when we work together. With Term 1 and 2 affected by covid-19, Term 3 was our first full term of attending 10 consecutive weeks of school – and what a lot we packed into that term! Book Week, Drama Day and lots of incursions and excursions. It seemed like we were ‘back to normal service’. For many members of staff and students, remote learning meant learning new skills – especially where technology was concerned – but you know what? We did it! I think many parents learnt new skills too with Classdojo, Seesaw and Microsoft Teams but being connected was crucial during remote learning. A laptop for every child proved invaluable and our students’ keyboard skills improved enormously (something they will need for NAPLAN online) along with navigations skills. Keep practicing kids! This year we introduced LiteracyPro in Years 3 to 6 to motivate students to read. Books do not have be on a device such as a laptop, tablet, Kindle or phone, reading the old fashioned way with a book in hand and turning the pages is just as important – just get them reading! A child who reads 1 minute per day reads 8,000 words per year and scores in the 10 percentile of standardized tests; a student who reads 5 minutes per day reads 202,000 words and scores in the 50 percentile of standardized tests while a student who reads 20 minutes per day reads 1,000,000 words and scores in the 90 percentile of standardized tests. Let’s get everyone reading! In Term 4 every primary student participated in the swimming program – what a feat that was. The students thoroughly enjoyed their time in the water with everything running smoothly. I strongly encourage parents to take their child to swimming lessons at a local pool. Our school swimming lessons can give them confidence in the water but regular swimming lessons cements their learning and I look forward to the day when we have a swimming carnival. I have already booked the lessons for 2021! As we say ‘goodbye’ and reflect on 2020, we look forward to students returning in 2021 and welcoming new families to our AIIC community. KINDERGARTEN The academic year of 2020 was definitely one to reflect upon. A year of unprecedented times, adaptability and resilience for students, parents, and teachers alike. The COVID-19 pandemic brought with it some challenges, but the kindergarten children certainly demonstrated a strong sense of togetherness, understanding and kindness and we could not be prouder. The year began with a focus on learning all about the kindergarten children and their families. It was lovely to have welcomed so many new families to the College. The Kindergarten children enthusiastically engaged in and followed a curriculum filled with literacy, numeracy, science-related inquiries, physical education, Islamic and Arabic studies. A program implemented to successfully prepare them for the next chapter in their school journey. The end of Term 1 and half of Term 2 had children learning from home. The COVID-19 pandemic required children to safely complete home-learning pack activities supported by daily instructional correspondence and weekly video recordings of home learning requirements. The children adapted well to this change and worked well from home. During home-learning our Kindergarten classroom underwent a renovation. The classroom received a coat of paint, new furniture and resources. Upon the children‛s return, halfway through Term Two, they were welcomed back, with open arms, to their new classroom environment. A lovely surprise for all the students. The Haj Incursion, the greater Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca was a huge success this year. The children explored and followed the mandatory religious duty for all Muslims during the annual Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia. This Incursion was a popular event that the AIIC Kindergarten children attended in Term Two. Term 3 had the Kindergarten children venture out to connect with the rest of the school. Children began their Physical Education lessons, participated in library sessions at the AIIC Library and attended the AIIC whole school assemblies. This term also had the children engage in a unit of inquiry all about looking after our planet, with a focus on recycling, sustainability, and the production of our very own vegetable garden to collaboratively care for and grow. Term 3 also brought with it our annual Drama Showcase. The focus for our drama presentation saw the Kindergarten children present a song entitled ‘We are the World‛ and an Islamic song entitled ‘Pillars of Islam‛. This show piece reflects the important acts of being kind and being together especially during the unprecedented times we have faced this year. As happens every year, the fourth term came too quickly. In amongst all curriculum and learning focuses, we had our Under 8‛s Day. A day designed to embrace the joy of early childhood. This year‛s theme was ‘play, playfulness and engaged learners. The day was filled with sporting activities, fine motor tasks and art related craft, all whilst engaging with the Prep and Year 1 students. The children have made remarkable progress this year. It has been an absolute pleasure working with them and watching them achieve greatness. Both I (Miss P, Classroom Teacher) and Miss Saphena are extremely proud of all the students and wish them every bit of success and happiness in their Preparatory year. Preparatory Prep have had an interesting and exhilarating year. In term 1 we started our Jolly Phonics program, which taught us all of our phonemes and the correct way to write letters. COVID-19 brought us unprecedented times but it gave us a chance to work from home and learn online! Thank you to our wonderful parents for taking on the teaching challenge, MashaAllah. It was wonderful to celebrate the diversity within our classes and see students come to school in traditional dress for Harmony Day. We learnt addition as well as Nursery Rhymes and Fairytales in term 2. We even got to use our passports and ‘�ly’ to Mecca and complete our Hajj with our Imam’s! When term 3 started, we had learnt all the foundational knowledge to begin writing and reading. It was our busiest term; we watched our Henny Penny chicks hatch in an incubator, went on an excursion to Tommerup’s Farm and performed “Old MacDonald Had a Farm” on Drama Day. Term 4 focused on “Under the Sea” and “Weather”. We have learnt so much this year and can’t wait to see what happens in Year 1 next year! Year 1 What a different, busy yet extremely productive year we have had! Although this year has looked nothing like the rest, with the COVID-19 pandemic, Year One students enjoyed a range of learning experiences both in school and remotely. They have faced new challenges and came out stronger and wiser and we couldn’t be prouder. 2020 saw children engage in home learning during the end of Term One and beginning of Term Two. Students worked online and remotely to continue accessing the curriculum during this time. Children adapted well to the disruption and completed set work and activities successfully. Once we welcomed the children back halfway through Term Two, it was straight back to business. Students enjoyed a range of Incursions to deepen and strengthen knowledge and understanding in relation to current curriculum units. The Haj, Gecko Wildlife and Super Science circus incursions brought with them new interests to explore and enabled students to work collaboratively to demonstrate the attributes of our curriculum units. As part of the children’s Physical Education subject, children participated in swimming lessons. Living in Australia, being around water, means that being able to swim is an essential part of the PE curriculum. Children participated enthusiastically in all swimming related activities. Term 3 brought with it our annual Drama Showcase. The focus for our drama presentations saw 1C and 1B present a performance based around the story of ‘Pete the Cat’, demonstrating the importance of resilience. 1A and 1D provided a drama show piece following the important act of kindness. Both these subjects followed the core values behind our schools ‘You can Do It’ program. These lessons were implemented within the curriculum to teach students all about the positive attitudes and social-emotional skills that develop children’s resilience, confidence, persistence, organisation, and ability to get along. Home Learning during Covid 19 restrictions

Year 2 Students in year 2 have had explicit academic learning achievements designed for their curriculum. Reading, writing , comprehending and expressing themselves has been accomplished through a hands on approach, experiments, presentations and interactions with peer groups throughout the year. Excursion and incursions have always been an essential part of learning and presenting a holistic aspect of development with students here at AIIC. A visit to ANZAC Square, getting a feel of divinity with the Haj incursion were essential elements of learning for our students. Puppet shows and on stage performance of characters were other approaches incorporated for learning and imparting learning amongst our beloved young learners. Despite Covid 19 pandemic, we also had many activities such as Science Day and Drama Day to get our students learn through active participation. Library Monitors This year, the library invited year 6 students to express their interest in learning how to become a ‘Library Monitor’. 5 students were selected and began training immediately. These students dedicated their play-time to helping in the library; learning how to return and reshelve books, loan out books, organise collections and assist in the running of book fairs. We thank them whole-heartedly for their interest, dedication and commitment to assisting in the AIIC Durack Library.

THE YEAR 2020

Despite the challenges we have faced this year, the Durack library has continued to provide our students with access to quality literature and literary experiences in safe, socially distant yet exciting ways. We also asked your children what they would like to see more of in the library and have taken their feedback on board by purchasing over 200 of the latest books, including a range of graphic novels. In order to adapt to our changing environment, Mrs. Hearsey conducted interviews with some of our local authors and recorded book read-alouds for students, so that they were still able to access literary experiences, from home. “Literacy Pro” was also purchased by the school, which gave students access to a huge range of fiction and non-fiction e-books. Home readers were packed by a dedicated team of wonderful Teacher Aides, and sent home for students, so that no child missed out on reading. It has been a tough year all ‘round, but our library staff have been unwavering in their commitment to provide your children with access to quality literature, despite these ever-changing and uncertain times. experiment, had a pretend afternoon tea with our friend the tiger from the story “The Tiger Who came to Tea”, as well as a whole host of other fun literacy learning experiences. Mrs. Hearsey just loves to make reading and literacy, exciting and oh-so fun!

“Reading should not be presented to children as a chore or a duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift” - Kate DiCamillo (Children’s Author) …And this is precisely why we here at AIIC library chose to continue with our Book Week plans this year; because we think that everyone, especially parents and our precious students, all needed a little enchantment, magic and fun, after all of the challenges and uncertainties we faced this year. Our little ‘gift’ to you all. Book Week commenced with a bang in term 4, with students participating in a Premier’s Reading Challenge celebratory pizza party in the library. The first 50 students to complete the challenge also received a special “Flying Key” gift! Students were treated to a presentation by 1 of 3 children’s authors: Angela Sunde for PrepYr. 1, Nadia Sunde for Yr. 2-3 and Pat Flynn for Yrs. 4,5,6, and they also watched a show by Perform Education, which was based on CBCA’s shortlisted books for 2020. We had a Winter Wonderland themed book fair with competitions and prizes to be won, along with special Book Week activities in the library at lunch times. To end our two weeks of festivities and to say goodbye to another fabulous Book Week, we treated the children to an exciting costume parade! Our students from prep - year 6 dressed up in dazzling and creative costumes which they showed off to their peers and parents through a vibrant and colourful parade around the oval. It was truly a spectacular sight to see. Another wonderful 2 weeks, celebrating the richness and beauty in Australian literature.

Year 3

Some interesting events that took place in the beginning of the Year were SUPER SCIENCE CIRCUS. Although it sounds like a Circus, it covered many things related to STEM-Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. Year 3’s and all of the Primary students actively participated in the show. Harmony Day, our long awaited event every year by students and parents, did not turn out as roaring as always, since our parents could not join us, but still it enabled us to have our class activities, where we did some activities together, learning about living in Harmony. In Science, students learnt about heat transfer, investigating how heat can be transferred by making solar ovens. Living or non-living or once living turned out to be an interesting unit too, since students not only learnt about grouping things and classi�ication of animals, but also learnt about how they can do art even with the things available in nature. The art unit was linked to the science unit. The students thoroughly enjoyed the whole experience of �inding things from their backyard and making some artwork with them. In term three, students were busy investigating how and why their shadows change in size at different times of the day and how many changes occur due to the rotation of the Earth on it’s axis twenty-four hours of the day. With all this going on, our Literacy, Maths, Islamic and Sports Activities continued as usual. Students were challenged at every stage. Students had to write a new chapter for Roald Dahl’s book on “The Twits” in which they had to write one of the new pranks that either of the Twits played on each other. Students had a lot of fun researching about one of Australia’s natural landmarks in term three geography. Students came up with �ive research questions, and the students searched those questions up on the computer and then wrote down their answers. They had a lot of fun. Overall 2020 was as productive as the rest of the years, even more than others as students learnt to use of Microsoft Teams through their remote learning program due to COVID -19. A new way of learning occurred for students, giving them the opportunity to learn in different circumstances. It was interesting to see, how students adapted to the new technology so easily. Year 4

The Year 4 classes started 2020 with an exploration of our personal histories. We also studied Australian history, focussing on convicts and the First Fleet. Our exploration of Math has taken us along a journey looking at place value, multiplication, division, fractions and decimals. Term 3 shaped up to be an exciting time for Year 4’s as we investigated sustainability in Geography. We worked hard to promote recycling and sustainable waste management within the school through the Containers for Change program. Together, we formed a fantastic team by encouraging each other, using resilience to work through challenges, and taking deep breaths to take control of big feelings so we can bounce back and try again. Students had a lot of fun researching one of Australia’s natural landmarks in term three geography. Students came up with �ive research questions, and the students searched those questions up on the computer and then wrote down their answers. They had a lot of fun. Learning Together The students worked hard to understand how to work in small groups and get the job done. This is a serious challenge, as any adult will know! We �igured out that there are lots of things we can do to make our team work, including taking turns to share with the group, listening to each other’s ideas and agreeing on a plan together so we are on the same page before we start the task. Day Camp Camp was a highlight of 2020 for the Year 4 students. Year 5 In ‘You Can Do It’ students worked on building their confidence. They worked in pairs to unfold what confidence means to them, ways to avoid emotional and social blockers and ways to gain confidence. They then created a poster about confidence with illustrations of what it means to them. Finally, students presented their idea in front of the whole class. This gradual process made them more confident and comfortable to present. During Science, we studied Light. We researched about “How Light is filtered?” We also looked at the effects of harmful rays and how we try to minimise damage through tinting windows in cars, houses etc. The effects of harmful light to the human eye were also looked at as a mini project. Students made some sunglasses which had a variety of cellophane colours to see which colour reduces the most harmful light. The students enjoyed the project and making the glasses. Students went outdoors to examine how plants are adapting. They touched and inspected the size of leaves to understand which adaptation techniques they have. They drew the leaves and wrote a brief explanation about the different plants adaptation strategies. In English: Students were asked to walk around and pair up with different classmates to collect information about their classmates’ background in order to understand and accept the rich diversity we have in one class. They asked further questions to know more about traditional food, music, clothes, etc. As part of English, students chose four random words and were challenged to use them to create a story. They discussed, brainstormed and mind mapped the elements of the story. They created different types of stories and used the target words in different forms. We always encourage our students to read, and in reading students were involved in different reading tasks such as mind mapping, comparing and summarizing. Year 6 The year started quite uneventful enough until the Covid-19 pandemic started midway through Term 1. Like other schools in Australia, we had to shift to remote learning via Microsoft Teams and learning packages. It was a huge change but somehow, we managed. In Term 2 for Science, we studied ‘Our Changing World’. A perennial favourite among the students was the topic on ‘Natural Disasters’ in particular, volcanoes. Some enthusiastic students from 6A embarked on some research and produced a 3D volcano model and a presentation. In Term 3 for Science, we studied Energy and Electricity. To reinforce our learning, both classes went on an excursion to Skyzone where we observed and got to experience Potential and Kinetic energy in real life! It was so entertaining to watch all our friends show off their skills on the trampolines, Enduro Warrior course and also playing Laser tag. During Term 3 students were able to build on their leadership and teamwork skills by attending an afternoon leadership camp. Students were able to take part in lots of activities like the In�latable Obstacle course, Dodgeball, Tug of War, Hungry Hippo and learn some Martial Arts skills. It was very entertaining to see all our competitive sides come out and we �inished with a lovely BBQ dinner altogether. For Drama Day, 6A students decided on a Murder Mystery, a ‘Who dunn it’ entitled ‘Murder at Manly Manor’. Despite the many heated discussions, the students managed to collaborate on a script. Overall, it was a satisfying learning journey for everyone. In Term 4, students commenced with the second instalment of their swimming programme. Another event we looked forward to the JALSA, followed by the much- awaited Year 6 Graduation at the end of the term. Intensive Education Report By Kimmi – Secondary and Tracey -Primary

“From Little things Big Things grow … “ It certainly has been a year of growth, development, learning and celebration for the Intensive Education Department. Mrs Nerin Gounden began and led the IE department, essentially from April this year and in the face of Covid and the challenges that it brought with it, our department flourished under her leadership and this is reflected in student progress and staff morale. As a cohesive team, we are able to best support our students and ensure future success and sustainability. Secondary Successes Our Senior Teacher Aide team ( Sayeed Kursheed, Ruchi Singh and Nouha Nachebe) have been exemplary in their support of our students and teachers. The numbers of students that requested support and were provided with assistance has grown substantially during this year. Our senior students are provided with withdrawn support as well as in class support depending on their individual needs. Teacher Aides work collaboratively with teachers to ascertain the most effective ways to support our students, particularly those students with disabilities. Our Year 11 and 12 at risk students were provided with individual support especially in Numeracy and Literacy and VET courses to ensure that they are able to successfully pass their examinations and associated assessments. Students were wthdrawn and provided with reasonable adjustments during their assessments. We celebrated our students and their successes during our awards ceremony and were so proud that our students, despite their challenges, have achieved their intended goals. • Boys and Girls Club The Girls/Boys/Kids Club are programs created to meet the varying needs of our students, many of whom hail from refugee backgrounds and struggle with complex trauma. It is primarily an inclusive, experiential learning platform that addresses the following: • • • • 58

Primary School SWD and EAL/D Successes This term our SWD class has been busy learning about time and seasonal change. As part of this unit, students explored the plant life cycle and spent time planting and growing some vegetables. They loved examining different seeds, caring for them and watching them grow in the school green house. Our class also completed a cooking skills unit where they explored many new skills such as weight and measurement, cause and effect, and learned how to write a procedural text. Our EAL/D students have been busy building their English language skills through learning about some famous people from the past. They loved reading, writing, and talking about the inspirational life of Helen Keller and how she managed to overcome obstacles and help others. They also enjoyed learning English through a study of Steve Irwin and his passion for Australian wildlife. It has been a wonderful term full of happy experiential learning. Islamic Studies & Arabic Language Accommodate Active Tafseer Lessons

In the academic year of 2020, our secondary classes at the Australian International Islamic College were introduced to some of the very unique areas of subjects in Islamic studies. The traditional subjects such as Qur’an reading and memorizing, Fiqh, which deals with the studies of essentials and practices. Aqeedah, which explains the authentic Islamic creeds, and Akhlaaq, which offers the high standards of Islamic mannerisms have been actively taught throughout the life of our students at the college. However, in addition to all the traditional subjects, our students were exposed to learning a new subject of Tafseer, which is to understand the messages and meanings of the Qur’anic chapters. The glorious Qur’an was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) in an exclusive language of Arabic. The Qur’an enjoys its purity and sanctity with its powerful and classical nature of the language. It is a fact that the book of God cannot be adequately understood simply by having the knowledge of modern Arabic with basic dictionaries or language tools. Although there are some renowned Qur’an translations easily available, it is not possible to find them accessible all the time especially during our regular prayers. We believe that it will offer optimum benefits only when we manage to understand whatever we read in them. Keeping these and many other factors in mind, we, the Imams at the college decided to create a program, which will ensure that every student who graduates from the college will be empowered to explain the meanings and authentic interpretations of a minimum of twenty five most frequently recited chapters or Surahs from the glorious book of Qur’an. In addition to the brief chapters, our students would also master the verses that are related to their day to day life situations and behaviours. This year was planned to be very special for our Arabic second language studies. Arabic department had many meetings of their own in order to create a unique curriculum, but because of the corona-virus, it was slowed. Despite the lock down, we covered the existing curriculum decently. The last three terms, there is very good progress amongst our students in our Arabic language learning. We created an intensive reading and writing program this year; muallima’s class, to support students who are behind and need extra support. There were many challenges, but we worked hard to overcome these challenges Alhamdulillah. In the future we will support our new students and the students, who are behind, by creating extra classes before and after school, using simple Arabic work books for the students to work on and practice at home. We are aware that reaching this goal is not possible without investing the significant share of time along with great level of dedication. Our college leadership and management has been generously supportive in the journey of our students for achieving outstanding results in all their studying endeavours. In the Name of Allah, the Merciful, the Beneficent. Praise be to the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our Prophet, Muhammad (PHUB), a mercy upon all creation and on his family and all of his companions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Majlis, Ta’meer e Milat, coordinated by MESCO, the 71st Cheshne Miladun Nabi Jalsa, in Hyderabad India and for giving me this great honour to take part in this auspicious occasion. I also would like to congratulate the people participating in Hyderabad and those tuning in from around the world to celebrate Miladun Nabi.

BIRTH OF THE HOLY PROPHET MUHAMMED (MOULUD RASOOL(SAW)) Today is the twelfth of Rabi’ul Awwal. The time is reminiscent of the blissful birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammed (pbuh). Let us muse on this great event that was to change the course of human life on Earth and make us aware of the divine purpose of this life as well as the hereafter. God the Almighty created the multiverse. He created every plane of existence. In his kindness and grace, He watches over everything in the world. Nothing occurs without His knowledge. His dominance is with compassion and with generous giving. He loves us all and provides for us all. His guidance to us is grace and blessing, to follow His guidance is bliss and a quality life. Allah has no need. He does not benefit in any way from our actions and our actions do not have any negative impact on Him. What does He like? He likes to see us looking after ourselves and improving the quality of our lives. What does He dislike? He dislikes seeing us harming others or ourselves. How can we improve our lives? He gave us the perfect direction and guidance for self-betterment and the betterment of everyone around us. How do we discover His guidance to us? Well, my dear brothers and sisters, Allah sent Prophets and messengers to bring us His messages and He guides us by showing exactly how to implement His message in our lives. Allah, Ta’āla told us in the Holy Qur’an about these messengers:

ِّ‫َ ُ ْ ُ ْ ُ ْ َ نَ َّ ُ َ ش‬ ٌ ْ َ ََ َ َ ْ ََ َ َ ْ َ َ َ َ َ ُ ‫نذ ِرين ۖ فمن آمن وأصلح فل خوف‬ ‫وما نر ِسل المرس ِل ي� ِإل مب‬ ِ ‫�ين وم‬ ِ َ ُ ْ َ ْ ُ ََ ْ ََْ ﴾ ٤٨﴿ ‫ح َزنون‬ ‫علي ِهم ول هم ي‬

‘We do not send the Messengers but to give glad tidings and to warn, then those who believed and made amends then to them there is neither fear nor any grief’. (Al Qur’an 6:48)

َّ َّ ۡ ُ ٰ ۤ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۤ َ َ َ ۡ َ ۤ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۤ َّ َ‫النب ّ ن‬ َ‫� م ۡۢن َب ۡعده ۚ َو َا ۡو َح ۡي َن ۤا ا ٰٓل ا ۡب ٰر ه ۡي َم َوا ۡس ٰمع ۡيل‬ ِ ِ ِ ِ ِ ‫ِانا اوحينا ِاليك كما اوحينا ِال نو ٍح و ِ ٖ ي‬ ٖ ِ ِ

َ ۡ َ ٰ َ َ ٰ ۡ َ ُ َ َ ۡ ُ ٰ َ َ ُ ۡ ُ َ َ ۡ ُّ َ َ ٰ ۡ َ َۡ َ َ ۡ ُ ۡ ََ َ ٰ ۡ َ ۡ َ ‫ن ۚ واتينا‬ ‫وِاسحق ويعقوب والسباط و ِعيس وايوب ويونس وهرون وسليم‬ َُ َ َ ‫د ٗاود زب ۡو ًراۚ‏‬

‘Lo! We inspired thee as we inspired Nuh and the Prophets after him. As we inspired Abraham, Ishmael, Ishaq and Yaqoob and the tribe of lssa, Ayyub, Yunus, Haroon and Suleiman and as we imparted unto Daud the Zaboor (Psalms)’. (Al Qur’an 4:163) 62

َ ۡ َ َ ۡ ُ ۡ ُ ۡ َ ۡ َّ ً ُ ُ َ ُ ۡ َ ۡ َ ۡ َ َ ۡ ُ ٰ ۡ َ َ ۡ َ ً ُ ُ َ َ‫ك ؕ َو َك َّلم‬ ‫ورسل قد قصصنهم عليك ِمن قبل ورسل لم نقصصهم علي‬ ُ ّٰ ً‫الل ُم ۡو ٰس َت ۡكل ۡيما‬ ِ

‘And Messengers we have mentioned unto thee before and messengers we have not mentioned unto thee and Allah spoke directly unto Moses’. (Al Qur’an 4:164)

Whatever good things we can see in this world, are the fruits of their hard work. Misguided people persecuted the Prophets and made them suffer and compelled them to leave their homeland. All the Prophets endured the suffering patiently and passed God’s message to their people with grace and kindness. All the Prophets were human beings who were so faithfully devoted to Allah that they were saved from sin. All of the Prophets except Muhammad SAW had their defined domain, limited in time and place. For example: the Holy Qur’an says:

َ ٰ ً ۡ ُ َۡ َ َۡ ۡ َ َ ٰ ۡ ِّ ۡ ُ َ َ َ ّٰ ُُۡ ۡ َٰ َ ََ ۡ ‫ل َقد ار ۤسلنا نوحا ِال قو ِم ٖ َه فقال يقو ِم اعبدوا الل ما لـكم من ِال ٍه‬ َ ۡ َ َ َ ۡ ُ ۡ َ َ ُ َ َ ِّ‫ُ ۡ ٗ ۡ ن‬ ۡ ‫غ ي�ه ؕ ِا� اخاف عليكم عذاب يو ٍم ع ِظي ٍ ‏‬ ‫م‬

We sent Nuh to his people, and he said:’O my people, worship Allah, there is no God for you other than Him, I fear for you the torment of a great day’. (Al Qur’an 7:59) And the greatest achievement of Moses was to deliver the children of Israel to safety as Allah saved them through Moses.

َ َ َْ َ َ ْ ‫َ َن‬ ْ‫نج ْي َن ُاكم ِّم ْن َع ُد ِّو ُكم‬ ‫يا ب ِ ي� ِإس ِائيل قد أ‬ ِ ِ

‘O Children of Israel, We saved you from your enemy’. (Al Qur’an 20:80) As regards to Jesus, his apostolic mission was to bring back (to the right path) the children of Israel after they had strayed and turned away from the teaching of Moses. According to the Bible, as it is now, Jesus said, “Think not that I have come to destroy the law of the Prophets, I have not come to abolish them but to fulfil them”. (Mathew 5:17) To his twelve disciples whom Jesus sent he commanded: “Go wither to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. (Mathew 10:5-6).

ً ِّ َ ُّ ۡ ُ ۡ َ ّٰ ُ ۡ ُ َ ۡ ِّ‫َ ۡ َ َ ۡ َ ۡ ُ َ ۡ َ َ ٰ َ ن ۡۤ ۡ َ ٓ ۡ َ ن‬ ‫الل ِاليكم ۤمصدقا‬ ِ ‫ِّوِاذ قال ِ َعيس ابن َّ مريم يب ِ� ِّ ِاسا ِءيل ِا� ۡ رسو ۢل‬ ُ َ ۡ َ ٗ ُ ۡ َ ۡ ۡ ‫َ َ ۡ نَ َ َّ َ ۡ ٰ َ ُ َ ش ًۢ َ ُ ۡ َّ ت‬ ‫� ِمن ب ۡع ِدى اسمه احم‬ ؕ‫د‬ ِ َ ‫َل َما ب ي� ٓ ي ُدى ِم ۡن ٰالتور‬ ِ ‫ٮة ۡوم ٰب َ�ا ِبرۡسو ُّ ٍل ۡي ٌا‬ ُ َ ِّ ‫فل َّما جا َءه ۡم ِبال َبين ِت قالوا هذا ِسح ٌر م ِب ي ن‏‬ �

And when Jesus son of Mary said, “O Children of Israel, I am God’s Messenger to you, confirming what preceded me of the Torah, and announcing good news of a messenger who will come after me, whose name is Ahmad”. But when he showed them the miracles, they said, “This is obvious sorcery”. (Al Quran 61:6) The sphere of activity of the Holy Prophet Muhammed, peace and blessings be upon Him was not isolated to any particular place, time or people the Holy Qur’an says:

َ َ ْ َ َْ َ َ ‫اك إ َّل َر ْح َم ًة ِّل ْل َع َال ِم ي�ن‬ ِ ‫وما أرسلن‬

We sent thee not, but as a mercy for all creatures (Al Qur’an 21:107) The whole world was waiting for salvation and rescue from each other and their own folly. People had strayed far from what is good for them, they strayed like the people of Noah or the descendants of Israel and they needed to be guided back to the right path by divine mercy with the final message so that if they hold on to it, they would never go astray. By the 6th century AD Arabia had turned into the darkest of dark spots, female children were buried alive by the pagans. This inhuman practice of female infanticide was heinous to the extreme. Mecca was the centre of idol-worship, the Holy Ka’ba itself was inhabited by some 360 idols. It was under these most difficult circumstances that our beloved Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, was born. Australian International Islamic College 2020

At the age of forty (610 AD), he was endowed with Prophethood (Nubuwah), three years on, he was commanded to convey the divine revelations beyond his intimate family and friends. He taught people about the Oneness of Allah and equality of human beings. He taught that all living things must be treated with kindness and inanimate resources must be managed responsibly. He thereby set in Arabia an everlasting model for the entire world to follow. In the twenty-three years of his Prophethood, he changed the Arabs into a most civilised and dynamic race and he brought light to the entire world. G.Margoiouth, a western writer said: Muhammad had laid the foundation of a state which had a political as well as religious metropolis: he had united together into a nation the scattered tribes of Arabia, he had given the people a common faith and created for them a bond of union, far stronger and more enduring than the ties of blood and family. The life of the Holy Prophet contains numerous instances, which are an eloquent testimony of his truthfulness, we only mention here about the liberation of Mecca. On the day of the liberation of Mecca in 8. AH, in the courtyard of Masjid-ul-Haram, those standing before the Prophet, peace and blessings upon him, included such persons as used to drag his followers over the burning desert sand. There were individuals who had vowed to put him and his followers to death and to destroy all traces of his faith. They were all there • Hind, wife of Abu Sofian-who had ripped open the chest of the Prophet’s uncle Hamza and chewed his liver – she was standing there with fear putting a cloth on her face in order to secure immunity. She was never the less identified. • Ikrima bin Abu Jahal, who was behind merciless persecution of Muslims was also standing there. • Habbab bin Aswad who murdered Zainab, the pregnant daughter of Muhammad peace and blessings be upon him also was there as well as thousands of swordsmen and devoted supporters of the Holy Prophet. The Holy Prophet asked the people of Mecca, “Have you any idea of what I am going to do with you”? A silence fell over them for a while, and then they remembered, • He grew amongst them as a gentle and kind soul, • He helped those who needed help, • He confronted the strong with kindness and tended to the weak with compassion. Their hitherto closed minds and dead hearts must have awakened at that moment to realise their folly and they said: “You will do good to us; you are a noble brother, the son of a noble brother”. These were his persecutors; they had killed some of his closest family and allies. In their moment of reckoning, they confessed that the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, was a man of great mercy and compassion. The Holy Prophet replied to them: “l will treat you in the same manner as my brother Joseph treated his brothers (children of Jacob). I will say to you”

“This day let there be no blame on you: Allah will forgive you, He is the Most-Merciful of the merciful”. (Al Quran 12:92) As the truthful, Joseph said that today there is no blame on you and you are not called upon to explain anything. May God Most High and Mighty forgive your sins. He is verily the most merciful. You are all free to go on with your lives. The Holy Qur’an tells us: “Verily in the life of the messenger of Allah you have a good example, for those who hope (for the mercy of) Allah and on (salvation) on the last day and remembered Allah much”. (Al Qur’an 33:21)

Contactless Iftar, togetherness even at the lockdown. This Ramadan came in the middle of the pandemic. Humanity in general and Muslims in particular were scattered apart, and the world had to shrink into nuclear families and individuals. Fasting and this month, originally occasions of togetherness and socializing, had to present itself in a totally different flavor and exhibit novel ways of magnanimity and reaching out. Annual iftar is one of the important social occasions from AIIC calendar where the whole school community come close and renew their connections. The spirituality gets boosted and exchanged through these programs and school travels into the religious lives of the area in it. Iftar evening succeeded in creating the feeling of oneness and brotherhood amongst our families. AIIC didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want to stop this great annual virtue from its part this Ramadan as well. We did it in a Covid safe manner compliant of all the health department instructions. Teachers and students packed the hot food and handed to the families that didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disembark their vehicles. Most families connected with the school received food for their whole household for that iftar. We were fortunate enough to provide food to the neighboring Ingenia caravan park as well. Fulfilling the importance of neighbors right in Islam, school was always meriting the feelings of those around us. Media and the governmental authorities took notice of the event and that created a bit of social media vibes as well.

Contactless Eid Ul Fitr and Eid Ul Adha

HELPING THE HOMELESS

Muslims throughout the world discharge a small charity on the day of Eid Ul Fitr known as Zakatul Fitr. This charity is intended for use towards the less fortunate. It provides support and enables them to enjoy the day of Eid. Every year AIIC hosts Eid Salah and provides a venue for the Muslims to perform their Salah. Families come together to pray and enjoy the food at the stalls. AIIC brings the community together.

This year was different. Due to Covid, AIIC was unable to hold Eid Salah. This gave us the chance to connect with the AIIC community in a different way. More than 20 AIIC staff came together on the Eid morning to cook, prepare, package and distribute hot meals. Over 2000 hot meals were prepared. We were able to feed our College families, our community, the less fortunate and even our neighbours at Ingenia Retirement Village. Through this gesture, AIIC was able to extend a kind and helping hand and most importantly, connect with the people who otherwise would have been isolated. AIIC was able to keep the spirit of charity alive and the distribution program was a success. The incredibly warm appreciation that the College received was overwhelming. By Imam Faizan

‫ين‬ ‫العالم� والصالة والسالم‬ ‫الحمد هللا رب‬ ‫عىل شأ�ف األنبياء‬ Assalamualikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu, As a member of the Australian International Islamic college (AIIC) community since 2011 and Head of Secondary from 2016, I feel well-prepared to lead the Secondary school through the next period of its development and to build on the wonderful momentum we have gathered last 15 years. I look forward to embracing opportunities for this learning community to build on the innovative and progressive thinking that have long been our “point of difference” and the impetus of our passion for being at Australian International Islamic College. Our school’s vision, our purpose for being, is steering us in a clear direction. When we educate for a sustainable future, we make a commitment to design curriculum that is meaningful and transferable; we make a commitment to engage learners in a world beyond topics and textbooks, toward globallyaccessible understandings; we make a commitment not to rush, but to thoughtfully gather the learning that can fill our senses with wonder, giving us time to inquire and delve deeply into what makes us curious. Year 11 Hiking Day to White Rock Ridge The students completed 7.35 kms and in 2931 degrees. The hike definitely challenged our students and pushed their boundaries. But no one quit, everyone completed the hike in a very positive way. What we witnessed was an example of great future leaders, natural teamwork skills and great resilience. I would to ACKNOWLEDGE THE AMAZING STAFF who led by example throughout the hike, helping each other and helping students to go through challenging conditions. I would like to mention:- Tim - The Lead Scout and great navigation, CO- driver needs practice . Dr Islam - The Engine for the Hike, he is the man who runs the distance in 30 degrees . Rahma - Led by example for everyone, great work going up hill. Ramsha - cruised the whole hike, made it looks easy Shenaz - Great support and motivation for the girls, checking on the girls all the way. Teresa - Positive vibe the whole way and led the girls the whole way. Andrew - Cheerful & happy all the way, great sense of humour. Jumah for supporting the activity and waiting with us. Mohammed Sayed- driving, hiking, rescuing “Black Hawk Down” . Imam Yusuf - I could not see you the whole way, did you run the whole distance? .Your kind words of wisdom have lifted our spirits the whole way. The well-being at the Australian International Islamic College is a fully integrated practice throughout policy, teaching, learning outcomes and structural organisations with the aim to: • Promote positive relationships among students, teachers, and community. • Promote students’ personal and social development skills such as courage, respect, compassion, confidence, and resilience. • Foster positive attitudes, connections, and sense of belongings with students learning to take responsibility for their actions, serving Allah and to be a good citizen. • Be ethical and empowered citizens with students learning how to be effective leaders who can empower others. Our Pastoral Care and positive behaviour management framework is based on the Holy Quran with the ultimate goal of achieving the pleasure of Allah SWT by being righteous Muslims with best akhlaq. AIIC Islamic Studies Team provides ongoing support and works alongside the Pastoral Care and Positive Behaviour Management Team to seek the guidance in the life of our beloved Prophet (PBUH). The students undertake weekly formal lessons and activities related to personal development through our ‘You Can Do It’ program. During the pandemic time the Pastoral Care and Positive Behaviour Management Team provided a strong connection between the college and the students by regularly checking on them through MS TEAMS and conducting safe daily home visits. This is my first year teaching at AIIC and it has been a pleasure to get to know and engage with the students as well as the very supportive teaching staff. I have the pleasure of teaching Year 9, 10 and 11 Business and Year 11 and 12 Accounting. As with all the other Year 12â&#x20AC;&#x2122;s, my Year 12 Accounting is the first group to exit from the ATAR system. My Year 9 Business students have been introduced to the subject for the first time and they are excited to be learning something about the real world, a world that they will be a part of in the near future. Many of them are able to bring their own experiences (through their parentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; business experience) and knowledge which make the lessons very engaging. Year 10 Business students are now in their second year of the course and are displaying their acquired knowledge in the classroom. They are excited to learn more about the world of business and it is a pleasure to be part of that. My Year 11 Business class is demonstrating an interest and creativity in the subject and realise that before long they will be in the real world of business in one way or another. My Year 11 and 12 Accounting students are also a pleasure to teach and they are engaging with the subject content knowing that Accounting will assist them if they ever decide to go into business or become a professional accountant. I wish all of my students a happy and safe holiday, in particular my Year 12 students who will soon be finishing their formal school studies and looking forward the next exciting chapter in their lifelong learning. Assalamu Alikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu This year has been a year like no other, but we persevered each and everyday with the purpose of providing our dear students with a quality education whether it was done remotely or in the classroom. As the Co-ordinator for the Humanities and Arts Department in the Secondary College I have worked with my dedicated team to ensure that our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; needs were our priority. We are living in a digital world and what better way than to get our students involved in using their resources online. Therefore, this year we have moved from our traditional textbooks to eBooks for years 7 to 10. Our students have access to the Jacaranda eBooks for all their subjects. Students are fortunate to have the privilege to take their laptops home and since everything is accessible online, they do not have to carry around heavy textbooks. I am currently teaching Years 11 and 12 Business and Legal Studies. My students in year 12 are the first group to exit under the ATAR system. Students who select Business and Legal Studies in their senior years demonstrate a passion for the subject. I believe that students who enjoy a subject will do their best to achieve the best for themselves. Unfortunately this year we were unable to go on our yearly excursion to the Supreme Court however next year Inshallah that will be the first item on my list to plan my Legal Studies excursion. I would like to wish all my students a happy and safe holiday. To my Year 12 students in particular I wish you all the best in your future studies, may you be blessed and rewarded as you leave us to venture into the world with endless possibilities at your doorstep. ARTS Despite the difficulty of remote learning due to the pandemic, students put in their craft and art skills into action and have produced such a wonderful collection of artworks. It has been such a joy watching the students engage in their creative processes and get excited experimenting with different materials and media. From colourpopping paintings to geometric and technical drawings, AIIC students have shown great skills over the course of the year. Year 7C Shama Khan - Year 7 Teacher Students in 7C have worked hard this year! Our focus was to improve literacy and numeracy skills to enable students to do well in all subject areas.  In Term 1 students were excited to celebrate Harmony Day and to receive their school laptops.  These were invaluable in Term 2 when students had 5 weeks online lessons at home due to the lockdown. The Leadership Camp in Term 2 was a great opportunity for students to try new things and build their con�idence. Rock climbing was the highlight, but students also did martial arts, tug of war, footy and frisbee. It was a special day our students will remember for years! It was wonderful to see students helping each other throughout the year with many different activities. For the Term 3 science assignment, students chose 5 living things and completed a classi�ication chart for each one. They chose an invertebrate to research and made a 3D model of it. Students also visited the science lab and examined marine animals.

In Term 3 we made English more engaging in Term 3 by doing hands on activities and then writing about them. Students decorated cupcakes, made an origami craft, played games and did science experiments. We also had an excursion to Rocks Riverside Park. Students walked along the river, hiked up a mountain, played soccer, had a picnic and enjoyed the views and fresh air. They wrote a recount of the excursion the following day. In Term 4 students wrote narratives for English and showed creativity with their ideas, characters and storylines. We had an excursion to Karawatha State Forest Park to look at a forest ecosystem related to our Science unit. Students sang nasheeds for Jalsa and recited poems about courage for Drama Day. Reem and Malaf received Endeavour Awards for their excellent attitude, effort and achievement in 2020. 94

From Mrs Saha’s Desk Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu 2020 has been challenging yet a very enjoyable and a productive year for the students at AIIC. High School English students of Years 8, 9, 11 and 12 had a great time learning different genres like narrative, persuasive, analytical and expository texts throughout the year. I am very proud of the work that they have produced which is not only of a very high quality but also reflects their hard work, dedication and creativity. Our year 9 students learnt the art of persuasion and propaganda in Term 2 and they amazed us with their creativity as they designed some amazing posters on the global pandemic COVID – 19. Our year 8 students learnt the art of narration in Term 1. They wrote their stories and transformed them into comic books which clearly displays students’ hard work, effort and creativity. As a teacher, I am very proud to showcase the amazing work my students created this year. I am also teaching Years 11 and 12 EALD students. My Year 12 EALD students are the first cohort to exit under the ATAR system. I wish them all the best in all their future endeavours. I wish all students an enjoyable and a safe holiday. Socially Distant but Connected in Learning Social distancing has forced us to become more independent, but it has opened the world to our students in 2020. As we reﬂect on 2020, no doubt we are filled with sentiments of frustration and angst at the challenges that have burdened our communities this year. However, looking at the achievements of our students this year, I am filled with pride and awe at the resilience shown by our students in the face of these challenging times. Alahamdulillah, 2020 has compelled our students to dig deep into their capacious pockets of resilience to find the IT skills, time management and communication skills necessary to cope with our ever-changing environment. I have found that senior students thrived during the remote learning period as they accepted the challenges of learning online with open arms, finding avenues to communicate with each other and their teachers in meaningful ways. Despite the diﬃculties students and teachers faced this year, I can truly say that we have all grown exponentially as we have had to learn new skills and methods of learning and teaching, developing strategies to use technology to its fullest. Our Year 12 students this year are the first in the history of Queensland to complete the QCE qualification and, whilst it has been a daunting, almost terrifying task anticipating the outcome of the final external examination, the wealth of knowledge and experience gained in the process has been priceless. Students studying both English and EAL – guided by Mrs Saha and myself - had the opportunity to explore such diverse texts as Hamlet, Frankenstein and Life of Pi, whilst developing a range of skills in public speaking, analytical and creative writing.

A significant first for Year 11 has been the introduction of Essential English as an additional option for students as of 2020. Under the stewardship of Mr. Ryan, students in this program have had an exciting year developing their writing and speaking skills in practical English, geared for the workplace. EAL and General English students honed their mastery of Shakespearean texts through a study of Julius Caesar, and widened their literary horizons by exploring a variety of news articles, documentaries, poetry and novels. It truly has been an exhilarating year for Year 11’s who have risen to the challenges that COVID 19 has hurled upon us. Year 10 English students have seen an equally invigorating year as they have explored texts as distinct as Animal Farm and To Kill A mockingbird, discovered the amazing world of persuasion and propaganda, deciphered visual texts and have just dipped their feet into the strange world of Shakespeare. Through a wide variety of activities, Mr. Freeman and I have endeavoured to propel our students to discover new talents and skills to broaden their repertoire of learning experiences and to discover within themselves the strengths and talents inherent within. We wish our students all the best next year as they embark on the next lag of their educational journey, as they venture into the exciting and formidable world of Senior English studies. Whilst social distancing has limited our ability to assemble and conduct programs as a school, it has opened up global communication like never before. Our students have been able to reach out this year to fellow students around the country and the world! Through the collaborative writing project with SMA3 Padang High School in Indonesia our senior students were given the opportunity to develop the bonds of friendship and camaraderie engendered last year through the Australia-Indonesia Bridge Partnership. Not only has the program been a lot of fun, but it has given our students the ability to connect and empathise with Muslim youth from diverse backgrounds. Senior girls also had the opportunity to interact with the learned Aalima Sadia Mia in South Africa through the International Muslimas initiative, via Zoom meetings during the month of Ramadan. Student Council representatives participated in the Sustainable Schools Symposium - an endeavour to engage the youth in global sustainability goals by connecting students from around the country to discuss global environmental concerns. Year 12 students were able to connect with Senior English specialists to discuss external examination techniques. These and many other activities have linked our students to the world, despite restrictions caused by social distancing, and have lent to the richness of their educational experiences this year, Alhamdulillah! As I look back at the year that has passed, I can truly say that Senior English has never been so exciting at AIIC, and the English team looks forward to greater achievements and more exciting events next year, InshaAllah. English has been a lot of fun this year for Year 7. We have been practicing our persuasive techniques. The students were extremely creative when they invented a new product and then had to persuade the rest of the class how wonderful it was.

We have also been reading Follow the Rabbit Proof Fence by Doris Pilkington. This true story has led to many discussions about how unfair things were for the Aboriginal people in the 20th Century.

Milk Shake INTRO Hello everybody! I will start on how good you look today, anyway what I am mostly here for is to entice you with a caramel thick shake. If you do not know what a caramel thick shake, it is a creamy drink but flavoured caramel, it tastes amazing. BODY It has a yummy creamy texture that can take you to a fantasy land filled with caramel thick shakes. And if you love chocolate, strawberry or other flavours, than you will love a caramel thick shake. BODY This caramel thick shake can cool you down on a hot, summer day. Cause those ice slushes mixed with the shake, it is incredibly amazing. And warning it might cause a brain freeze so to be careful, but that brain freeze might not be as bad as you think it probably might just cool you down more if that is possible. CONCLUSION If you think those flavours are delicious, wait till you taste caramel. You will love it indeed! There is probably no excuse for you not to taste a caramel thick shake TODAY!! English Assessment Have you ever gone to the fruit market to buy an apple? Well if you have, you bought the wrong apple. There’s a new apple in town… it’s the all famous GOLDEN APPLE!! The reason why this apple is extremely super, duper awesomely great is because… Let me start off by saying that this isn’t some type of ordinary apple but is packed with two times the natural benefits of a normal apple which are fibre, vitamin c, vitamin k, potassium, and minerals (which is basically tiny edible rocks which are really good for your body and can help maintain a normal heartbeat. Each of these has its special need for the body such as nutrients. Did you know that when you eat normal apple it benefits you in so many different ways such as, it may stop some types of cancer, it is good for weight loss and may also be good for your heart and also might be good for gut bacteria. So, if a normal apple is this good for you the golden apple is 2x the benefits and is also 5x the tastiness. Therefore, you absolutely must buy the golden apple. This notorious golden apple is especially ideal for early mornings or even late starts during the day. Take it from me for example every time I get up late for school I get super hungry but I don’t have time to sit down and eat so then I get a golden apple out of the fridge and eat it all up plus this golden apple is both sweet and healthy the morning and boosted my energy up. The other thing is this apple isn’t call golden apple just for its name, but it is dipped in REAL EDIBLE GOLD!! Yep that’s right real edible gold even though scientist say that real edible gold isn’t beneficial. In ancient Egypt they use to think that gold heals the body. So now its up to you on which point you want to believe scientist or the ancient Egypt. To sum up, I have given my reason that this apple isn’t just two times the benefits of a normal apple but five times the tastiness. I have also given a reason of why the apple is called golden. Biology, Science and Mathematics Assalamualikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu With great pleasure I am writing for the 2020 Yearbook. It has been quite a challenging year but Alhamdullilah we have managed to provide quality education for our students. This year has given us insight into the importance of Science, the impact of biological research in terms of controlling diseases and the practice of safety measures. As a Senior Biology teacher I have worked closely with my Year 11 and 12 students and have prepared them for Year 12. The students have also worked hard to achieve their best. My Year 12 Biology students are the ďż˝irst group to exit under the ATAR system and it is a tremendous achievement for them as 50% of their assessment is from the external exam. Year 12 students had the opportunity to attend two excursions this year despite all the Covid restrictions. Year 11 Biology students had the chance to attend one excursion at QIMR for Cell Biology. The dedicated Year 11 Biology students also showed diligence in their learning. My junior Year 7 Mathematics and Science students have also learned their curriculum. Due to Covid 19 restrictions, Year 7 students unfortunately missed their annual excursion for the Brisbane Science Fair. The students had a fun time with all the practicals and Science week activities done at our brand-new STEM laboratory. Each year I always get the most amazing class of students as we get to learn about the best 2 subjects at school Maths and Physics of course. This year was no different in that regard but this year will be one of the most memorable ones for both me and my students. COVID has impacted our classes significantly by having to teach much of term 2 online. This represented some challenge but our students gave their best and we made it work together. Our Year 12 students are the first generation to graduate under the new ATAR system. This has meant a greater amount of effort was required from our students. Our students persisted though as they are very passionate about doing well in both Maths and Physics. Year 12 class proved they could work very well together during their Graduation fundraiser by organizing, cooking, selling and providing customer service. Their efforts paid off by making almost $1000 profit in one lunch hour.

The year 11 Maths and Physics classes have also worked hard this year. But it isn’t all “work” as can be seen in the fun experiment they do. This year is their preparation year and I think they have all realized this and now they are ready to tackle year 12. Cool science activities relate to this year's theme for National Science Week, which is Deep Blue: Innovation for the future and our oceans. Year 9A students engaged in science week activities all week. Working in groups, students use their creative skills making a poster and share their ideas with each other in power point presentations. Five posters were presented covering a variety of topics related to Human Impacts on Ocean Ecosystems. The activity provides students with the opportunity to facilitate learning on how humans can impact ocean ecosystems, both directly and indirectly and the actions that they can do to help minimize their own impacts on the ocean.

Ocean acidification is a deadly weapon, one that'll destroy fish and sea life and one that will affect and impact human life. A world without sea life and seafood, we can change it before it's too late. We can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide by burning fewer fossil fuels and then hopefully end ocean acidification, CO2 enters the ocean and reacts with the water creating Hydrogen (H) leading to more acid being created. Ocean acidification is an increasingly growing problem which is occurring around the world. It is putting many oceans in danger, as the condition of the oceans is becoming worse by the day. Because of the extensive amount of carbon dioxide being let into the atmosphere, the ocean is absorbing more of these particles. However, it can only continue for so long. Once the ocean cannot absorb anymore, it becomes more acidic. This results in many symptoms: • delicate organisms such as corals, clams, shellfish etc. are beginning to experience deformations and weakness in their shells and skeletons • People who receive most of their nutrition from seafood will experience difficulty and be deprived of this food source. • Increasing amount of CO2 results in the appearance of hydrogen ions, which compete with the carbonate ions and make it harder for sea life to survive etc. By Yousaf Khan (8B)

This year in STEM we have been looking at renewable energy. Our students created wind turbines with the aim of lighting a house. To achieve this goal they had to create a tower for the turbine strong enough to hold a motor, design a house or building to light up, and the blades for their turbine. Students investigated which blade design would provide the most power to a DC motor and then used the school’s 3D printer to create them.

Mathematics Year 8 and 9 Our mathematics classes in Year 8 and Year 9 are made up of a very diverse group who can speak several languages and as well as geometry, algebra, trigonometry and probability amongst others. We have had another successful year amidst the pandemic chaos. Our students were able to acknowledge the importance of mathematics in the everchanging world. The students were provided with a motivated entry into new topics, exposed to scenarios that help them make connections with the real-world, involved in problem-solving activities and challenged in skill consolidation. These exposures and exercises increased our students' confidence level and helped them to recognised mathematics as an accessible and enjoyable discipline of study: the students' enthusiasm and the high-level pass rate in the assessments demonstrate this achievement. Activities in Senior Engineering Laboratory The subject Engineering aims to give AIIC high school students a better understanding of what engineering is and how it works in everyday life. The subject also gives students some basic understanding about Engineering as their future career. This year AIIC Engineering students have completed several interesting projects throughout the whole year. Year 12 students built rainwater tank tower as a part of their final internal assessment 2. Students made the prototype of the rainwater tank tower and tested successfully. Year 12 students built and test a prototype of a rainwater tank tower. Year 11 students completed some exciting projects this year. All these projects were to develop an emerging technologies solution that support an elderly person to perform some everyday tasks. They design and develop a small hand vacuum cleaner, adjustable small portable table and a multi-function potable chair. Students develop problem-solving practices in studying the subject. The subject provides opportunities for students to see how concepts relate to life in order to hopefully spark a passion for a future career in a STEM field.

Activities in Senior Digital Solutions Laboratory AIIC has always given priority to the development of studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; in the technological sector and there has been significant advancement achieved throughout the year. Students are learning different programming languages like Python and JavaScript and developing their problem-solving abilities and creativity. The knowledge and skills related to technology in the school years provide an important grounding for later in life. Year 12 Digital Solutions students have successfully completed their all internal assessments with very high achievement and now preparing for final external assessment. I am very proud of my year 12 students for their hard work and dedication towards their study in Digital Solutions subject. Year 11 students are learning to build web base application using MySQL and Php. Students are developing problem-solving practices in studying this subject. I am grateful to my year 11 students for their hard work and dedication towards this.

Digital Technologies Years 7-10 As new technologies encroached every single moment of our life, from work to our leisure time, the knowledge of digital technologies becomes crucial for our younger generation. Our digital technology curriculum was designed to expose the students to essential aspects of information technology knowledge and skills. Our Year 7-9 classes worked on several topics this year such as computer programming, website development, designing database and creating games. Our technology lessons were interactive, collaborative, and packed with full of excitement of the outcomes. Poised for a great 2021 This year we have had 5 new teachers in the HPE department which has brought a renewed enthusiasm and skill sets. Many events this year were cancelled due to Covid-19, so we have had time to look inward and prepare our department and our students for future success. We managed to get to a Futsal tournament in term 1, taking 3 teams; senior boys, senior girls and junior boys. All three of our teams were able to secure at least one victory with our Junior boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; team advancing to the next round of the competition defeating two Gold Coast state school convincingly. This is an incredible achievement for our students as these are schools more than triple our size. Unfortunately, the next round never got to go ahead. However, we have established ourselves a school to look out for in the futsal area. Without the mass of events this year we have focused on implementing team training and our extra-curricular program in High school. We have many teachers who have special skills that we have been able to utilise their talents and interests to provide a different learning opportunity for our students. Students are now able to choose a program that suits them from arts & crafts, homework, robotics, STEM, and Board games to Volleyball, soccer, touch football, badminton, and table tennis. We have had a great time running this program and I know the students have appreciated the ability to select something they are passionate about. We look forward to providing even more opportunities for students next year! With the cancellation of many club sporting competitions, the government provided additional funding to the Sporting Schools Program. This is an initiative that connects schools to local sporting organisations and provides access to equipment, curriculum resources and coaches. This year we have been lucky enough to secure a large portion of funding that saw our students participate in a range of specialist coach led activities including, Soccer, Cricket, Gymnastics, Softball and Athletics. These sessions are invaluable to our students as they get to experience Australian sports in a fun and exciting way, while learning from qualified coaches. It has been a tough year for the HPE department with 5 new staff members and lack of events, but we still have a lot to celebrate and look forward to. Watch this space. ocational ducation and raining in AIIC

The Vocational and Careers Department was launched at AIIC in May 2020 to increase offerings for senior students and communicate Vocational information with the community. We offer Certificates at school and options for Higher education and pathways to university, as well as career advice for students past and present. Vocational offerings add immense value to the education facilities we already offer at AIIC. We will be offering several Certificates and Skill Sets to our students in Years 10, 11 and 12, which will give them ‘real world’ skills, extra QCE points and contribute to ATAR. The first course at Durack commenced in July 2020, a Certificate III in Active Volunteering, partnering with Volunteering Qld. Plans for 2021 include a 12-month Certificate III Active Volunteering for the Year 10’s, and a 2-year Certificate III Sport and Recreation commencing in Year 11. We also have opportunities for students to enroll with Mater Education and TAFE, for courses in Health Support, Design, Laboratory skills, Education support, Automotive and others. The Careers area will expand to offer short training courses and will include parents and the community in these services. As the school and buildings grow, we will have dedicated rooms for vocational courses and a Careers Hub. AIIC courses in 2022/23 will include a Skill Set for Barista, Certificate III in Hospitality and Screen and Media course and any other areas responsive to our student needs and Industry direction.

ISLAMIC DEPARTMENT In the Name of Allah, the most gracious and the most merciful. All praise be to Allah the Lord of the Universe. 2020 was a unique year for everyone on this planet, Covid 19 pandemic brought a sudden and unexpected change to everyone’s life including our education system. It has been a challenging year for the Imams, teachers and our students. Alhamdulillah with the help of Allah SWT and well organised approaches of our college to this challenge and great efforts of all AIIC staff including our students we achieved and met our 2020 goal. In our City Campus, we successfully conducted the remote learning program during Term 2 Covid 19 lockdown. AIIC Islamic and Arabic department provide education in three subject areas: Qur’an reading Skills, Islamic Studies and Arabic Studies. Teaching Qur’an reading ability is the main aim of our department and this year, we planned 85% of year 3 - 6 students of the City Campus to complete Noorani Qaidah book and start to recite Holy Qur’an properly. Alahamdulilah, with the help of Allah and our city campus staff ’s teamwork and parents follow up, we achieved what we planned. In Islamic studies, this year we started the new Al Nasiha books. Alhamdulilah we explored the following contents: Fiqh, Ahadith, Sirah, Tarikh, Aqaid, Akhlaq and Adab. Alhamdulilah all of our students actively participated and interacted with the subject and have learnt basic understanding of Islam. In Arabic studies, prep to year 6 students actively participated and enjoyed the subject. Four skills of language were explored: Writing, Reading, Speaking and Listening. Alhamdulilahe our City Campus students have shown great enthusiasm with the subject. At the end, I will ask Allah SWT to protect our school, community, state, country and the entire world from Covid 19 pandemic and help us to get back to the normal lifestyle that we used to do before the pandemic. Prep to Year 2 Classes with Heather Mclean

Prep Excursion to the farm Today was a great day for the prep students. We went for a visit to a working farm where we engaged in all kinds of exciting activities. We got to feed chickens, cows and sheep which some of the students were a little unsure of but eventually we all had a go. The animals were all excited to see us, the chickens especially knew exactly why we were there and as soon as they opened the gate they all ran for the food. This scared some of us but the chickens calmed down and all ended up eating food from our hands.

Farm Excursion

Year 2 Excursion to ANZAC Square Wow what a great adventure we had today. The year 2 class took a trip into Brisbane City to visit ANZAC Square and learn all about Australiaâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s history in the different conflicts around the world. We were very lucky and we arrived a little early so we had a chance to investigate some of the statues around the square. The students were intrigued by all the different people depicted in the statues and we enjoyed reading all the different plaques. After we took a walk around the statues we went inside and were treated with a tour by some wonderful ladies who taught us all about the peace keeping efforts that Australia has been involved in. We had great fun working with the interactive whiteboard that told us a lot of information that we found very interesting. What a wonderful learning day it was.

Curious Creatures To celebrate Book Week this week we made our own Curious Creature. The theme this year for book week is Curious Creatures and Wild Minds. We read lots of great books this week, made some bookmarks and talked about our favourite books and characters. At the end of the week to finish off our celebrations we made our own Curious Creature hand puppets. Everyone had their own hand puppet which they could decorate with google eyes, and lots of different materials. The students had a great time and really used their creativity, we were very impressed with how inventive they were and they loved showing them off to each other. 130

The spectacle of City Campus Year 2020

Another successful school year has come to an end! 2020 has ended with a tremendous sense of accomplishment! Congratulations my class of 2020! Year 3,4,5 and 6. I must acknowledge our students for their perseverance, hard-work, and effort displayed throughout the school year. Your hard work, dedication and perseverance has really paid off!

Inspire

Reflecting on the past school year makes me realize how fortunate we are at AIIC City Campus. We all experienced something different and challenging this year. We experienced some anxiety and trepidation due to COVID-19. But we steered through the journey together and overcame the hurdles. The support from the parents was of monumental significance. I have had a successful year due to the wonderful collaborative partnership between my students, two lovely teacher aides (Mrs Harris and Mrs Binti), parents and myself. As we come to the end of this academic year, it is with great pride that I can look back at the many achievements of the children. They have worked with utmost diligence. The students have achieved so much this year, becoming more confident, inquisitive and independent learners.

So, what happened in 2020? Well, let’s find out! It was a year where we leapt into our learning, celebrated our culture, discovered new ideas and tried hard to become great learners. The many values that have been on display throughout the year have particularly come to the fore as we end the year – resilience when tackling a particularly tricky problem whether it is in class or a problem between friends; courage in coping with changes; love and honesty towards all members of the school community; appreciation and happiness for each other and all the opportunities they are given within the school – which all strengthen their character and their ability to make the most of every aspect of school life.

Year 3 Geography

It has been a year of changes and everyone has embraced this with goodwill and continued to provide the best education for the children. STEM In Term 3 we introduced STEM across prep to Year 5. STEM education is the integration of Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in an effort to increase students’ interest, engagement and awareness in these areas. It also encourages students to manage team environments using communication, collaboration and problem - solving skills while persisting with STEM challenges and projects. GENIUS HOUR

In Term 3 we started something very exciting in our classroom - Genius Hour. Genius Hour is an inquiry-based learning program, based on decades of research into this particular type of learning. The inquiry approach allows students to work on a project or idea they are passionate about in class time. Genius Hour encourages and fosters the students’ sense of curiosity, ownership and empowerment over their learning, both in and out of the classroom. Genius Hour taught the students how to think and not what to think. In my class I acknowledge the fact that every child is different, and my aim is to help them finish this school year as great learners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mrs Harris (teacher aide), and Mrs Binti (teacher aide and admin) for their hard work and support this year. Mrs Binti joined City Campus this year and I really admire her work ethic. She is a great team player, lovely colleague to work with and a diligent worker. Thank you for the lovely smile you greet us all with every morning. Also thank you for organising bus trips and for always being with me with everything we proudly did at City campus. And Mrs Harris I can’t thank you enough - for bringing the sewing machine and oven for stem projects for doing sausage sizzles and last but not the least, making me coffee. I really admire your energy!!

Class of 2020 There is nothing more rewarding to me than having the opportunity to watch all of you learn and grow over the last few years. I am so proud to be a part of this journey and I can proudly say this because I have taught all of you lovely students since PREP. You all are so amazing with the biggest hearts and the greatest responsibilities. If there is one piece of advice I could super-glue to every Year 6 so that it was front and centre of your thinking for high school life, it would be to protect your good name and reputation. It is a slow process to build your reputation up, but it can be lost in a moment. I therefore urge you to be constantly be aware of your own dignity and precious individuality. In looking forward - harness your anxious excitement and forge your own future; take some risks; look over the horizon and don’t be afraid of life outside school. Hold close your school time memories and friends. You are the graduating class of 2020, you can now go forth with confidence – You have done it – the AIIC City Campus way! Campus Co-ordinator’s Message Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu, As we near the end of the unprecedented year that was 2020, I would like to send out a heart felt thanks to all the teachers, parents, students, members of staff and members of the wider community who came together to ensure 2020 was a success. Despite the turbulence that only a pandemic can bring, I can proudly say that our little campus has had so many successes to celebrate this year. The year looked to be an exciting one with the announcement of our new security upgrade grant in the first week of school. In preparation for the celebratory launch event, we also presented our new Nasheed group and announced a donation from our students to the victims of the devastating bush fires. Then, with the formation of our new student leadership team, we were all set to make 2020 the year of prosperity and positive change. It was all systems go as we set dates for a Nasheed group community tour, for the always anticipated Harmony Day celebrations and for a week of wet fun with our swimming program. However, the Almighty had a different plan. Before we could get the wheels in motion, our vehicle of change came to an abrupt ‘stop’. Although, perhaps “pause” is the better word. For it was not long before our students were again reaching out to their community with letters to our frontline workers, showering them with messages of hope and support. Then, in an astonishing display of their true abilities, our students took incredible change in their stride by demonstrating just how resilient and capable they are through their ability to adapt to online learning. Our students went from strength to strength this year and I pray that the Almighty continues to guide and protect them as they grow to become the active citizens, valued members and future leaders of our community. Of course, great students don’t just appear in their perfect form, out of nowhere. Our student success is a true reflection of the nurturing and supportive environment created by the teachers and staff who expect nothing but big things from our little souls. This year’s AIIC GC team did a phenomenal job leading our students through a journey they themselves had never embarked upon. With nothing but productive solutions and inspiring creativity, our teachers showed steadfastness in the face of trouble as they felt their way through the dark. More importantly, they did it with the utmost empathy and understanding. The way they wore their hearts on their sleeves as they contacted families and visited homes was truly remarkable. May Allah swt reward our teachers for their commitment, dedication and exceptional efforts. Finally, all of this effort and community spirit came to culmination in Terms 3 and 4, following a return to face-to-face learning. Our students, teachers and even parents have come together for the greater good of our school community. There is a “buzz” on college like never before, with many hands truly making light work. We have accomplished so much this year – the initiation of extracurricular programs, the introduction of a variety of lunch time clubs, the construction of a long-awaited basketball court, the commencement of a breakfast club and the return of our longawaited parent’s club. What is truly beautiful, though, is not the physical benefits we have seen, but the life lessons our students will carry with them for a long time to come. Learning is going beyond the classroom, beyond the textbook, beyond the laptop. Learning is permeating into our students’ hearts and developing not just their minds, but their character and their souls. If this is what AIIC GC can do in a pandemic year, I cannot wait to see what we achieve in the years to come, insha’Allah. I pray that Allah swt continues to shower his blessings on our college family and the little school we all call home. ISLAMIC DEPARTMENT 2020 has been a year filled with challenges, excitement and innovation, but the challenges faced through the lock down haverequired of us as teachers, to find creative and innovative ways to meet the needs of our students. Students and teachers had to adapt and adopted new methods of teaching and learning, so that we could continue with our curriculum. Due to the resilience of our teachers and students the transition has been smooth and easy, Alhamdullillah. The lock down has certainly taught us a valuable lesson, which is that modern technology is a very useful instrument in imparting knowledge. We at AIIC Gold Coast campus have not hesitated to use You Tube, Smart Boards and websites to impart Islamic knowledge. Students have no difficulty using technology and took to internet learning like ducks to water. Remote teaching and learning through internet mediums will definitely be a part of the future and every learning institution should be willing to include it in their learning resources in order to keep abreast with new developments. The Islamic department has also introduced an exciting new Islamic curriculum 'An Naseeha' which has been prepared by a team of 30 academics and Islamic scholars in the UK. Our aim is to produce students who excel in the recitation of the Qur'aan Kareem. To this aim, we have introduced Qur'aanic reading lessons after school on Mondays and Wednesdays. Furthermore, to encourage our students to memorise the Qur'aan Kareem, we have introduced an after school hifz programme for 5 days of the week. Alhamdulillah, these classes have made a huge impact on our studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progress. Qur'aan Competitions provide our students with the opportunity to highlight their achievements while spurring them to aim higher in their quest to excel in the tilaawat of the Qur'aan Kareem. In order to help our students to understand the sacred duty of Hajj and to develop in them the yearning to visit the holy lands and fulfil the manaasik, we created a Hajj setting for a practical demonstration of the rites of Hajj. Students and teachers alike enjoyed enacting the rites of Hajj and look forward to this event every year. We want to empower our students for the future and prepare them to become assets to their communities. To this end, we give them leadership roles so they will be prepared to lead their communities in Friday Khutbahs and in imparting Islamic knowledge to them. Our teachers focus on each and every child, irrespective of their learning ability so that they may reach their full potential. We are pleased to note that the naseeha of the Islamic teachers has resulted in an improvement in the discipline and respect shown by our students. Imam Imraan Husain 150

Through election, Student Council Representatives and School Captains were chosen. Duties began in Term 3, where they collectively decided to try and improve the school’s facilities. Everything ranging from playground equipment to extra-curricular activities. To make this happen, they came up with fundraising ideas such as: -

In a nutshell! What a year itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been! Despite it not being over, what a rollercoaster year it has been! In probably the weirdest year (letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s face it) ever, we have still managed to make progress and, above all, learn! This is by no means a minimal achievement. A lot of effort went in from the kids to make sure they did their work through lockdown and had to learn adult qualities like responsibility and diligence, and they had to learn them very quick! Year 4 has proven themselves more than worthy when it comes to their studies, and their behaviour was, throughout the year, outstanding. As this was an unfamiliar setting in a job that was also my first position, I really had no idea what the future held! But having Year 4 was an honour, and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m truly envious of their teacher next year. The photos above are only a small snippet of what we managed to do and achieve this year! This includes debates, tree day, saying thank you to our nurses and first responders throughout the early days of the pandemic, making candle holders out of plastic spoons , science week and learning to draw from a professional illustrator. What a year, what a class!

Year 5 with Mrs Bay

Animal and plant adaptation studies took us to David Fleay Wildlife Park in Term 1. We had a poncho day out without rain! We looked at desert animal adaptation, different tree roots in mangroves, bush walked for 15 minutes, watched all the shows they had to offer and petted a shingleback lizard or was it a snake? Even the bluetongue lizard decided to poop on our guide, Bindi, during his performance.

What a privilege it was to witness the Year 5 of 2020 navigate their way through an extremely challenging busy year. They flourished as they became skilled at managing a pandemic, online learning, academics, religious studies, sports and themselves. As their teacher, I am proud to be sending these capable, resilient and responsible leaders to the final year of primary school.

Our studies on the solar system took us to NASA online. Actual 3D models of equipment were displayed, and life size models of spacecrafts and planets were manipulated all online instead. Mathematic topics of 2D and 3D objects, maps, area., volume and perimeter were all included in our space project. NAPLAN is always a hot date in Year 5. This year the class were steadfast in their approach as they dutifully completed mock tests to prepare themselves. 160

We spent a whole day in 1854! Maalek was robbed by a bush ranger on our Eureka Stockade. The horse ended up eating his chocolate and banana. Omar became Peter Lalor. Omar raised a flag and we had to solemnly swear to be good new chums and not cause problems at the gold mines. The old folks -our teachers, were assayers at the claims office for gold. They defrauded the new chums of their gold and kept sending them to jail!

Nasheed Group The 2020 school year was a year of surprises and unexpected events. Despite all the obstacles and uncertainties teachers and students faced, AIIC Carrara Campus was proud to announce the birth of their first only girls Hijabi Choir in Queensland. The nasheed group came together to break the stereotype about Muslim women and engage students in a different way to the classroom program and offer positive experiences which raise self-esteem. The group first performed on stage in front of Hon. Jason Wood MP and Ms Angie Bell MP with only three days to practice and master “Let it rain” in tribute of the QLD bushfire. The girls outdid themselves mashallah, and I knew then I need to formally establish our nasheed group. Over the year, many opportunities to sing have been established, including the Police Commission Dinner, Robina Hospital Multicultural Day and Gold Coast Tree Day but we had to cancel due to COVID-19 restrictions as these events were cancelled. That did not stop the girls from performing at school assemblies and other school events when possible such as the School Qur’an competition. Taking on a new journey of online performance, the girls recorded their video in celebration to Eid Al Adha, which was published on the school Facebook page. The girls met weekly to practice a repertoire of Arabic and English pieces. Their commitment to which contributed to the development of a sense of personal accomplishment and cultivated a positive selfimage. Their bond and unity on stage spread the message of a sense of true belonging, offered a new approach for learning in an Islamic environment, encouraged student engagement, and promoted civic engagement. I look forward to working with the girls next year, and I believe we now have a strong foundation for great things. May Allah SBWT support us to achieve our mission which is recognising the value of performance in an Islamic environment to the total development of the young Muslim girls. 2020 is a year of unprecedent events. We are still currently experiencing a worldwide pandemic of COVID-19 with no end within sight. As COVID-19 restrictions continue to ease across the state and now,

Fluor Engineering competition 2020 More than 4,900 students from 8 countries participated in the 2020 Engineering Challenge to create a machine capable of repeatedly launching a ball to knock down a wicket. Our students have participated in this competition, built their machines from simple and restricted materials (like cups, craft sticks, rubber bands, tape, and cardboard tube) and then competed to see how many times they could knock down a wicket in a three-minute window. There were impressive wide range of creative designs, collaboration, and excellent teamwork from our students.

Food technology: Cooking in the kitchen Exploring Culture through Food Food culture rules the world. Celebrity chefs are treated like rock stars, and dining in famous restaurants is an essential experience for many visitors to the world’s major cities. It seems like many of the TV shows on cable are devoted to the food industry—whether it is chef-cooking competitions such as Master chef or shows like Food Safari. At Carrara campus, we introduced food technology as an extracurricular activity, giving its students real-life skills to taste what it’s like to cook up a career in the culinary arts and hospitality-management industries so that they can understand the impact of food and culture on our everyday life or be that next celebrity chef, restaurateur or other highly regarded food service specialist. What made the Food Technology course unique is that it is not a vocational program. Instead, the extracurricular was part of a comprehensive high school experience that includes subjects such as Math, Science, English, and Physical Education. Emin is a Year 9 student who discovered his passion for cooking and food. He thinks that there are many valuable experiences for the students working together and tasting new dishes from around the world. He said, “I think the best part was the cook-off week, when we are the manager and see what it is like being in charge. Not just telling people what to do, but monitoring the food safety aspects, monitoring temperatures of

the foods, making sure everything gets out in a timely fashion and interacting with the students and the guests that are coming to taste our foods”. I am looking forward to launching Food Technology as an elective in 2021 inshallah. Miss Farida Food Technology Teacher 168

English Years 9-10-11-12 One of the many highlights for senior students in the 2020 school year was delivering speeches on stage in front of an audience. Speaking is one of the most powerful and influential ways we communicate meaning in the English language. It is a craft that the English curriculum analyses, teaches and assesses. Spoken tasks are a mandatory part of the English curriculum, and speaking skills are directly assessed through syllabus criteria in all year levels from 7-12. Teaching students to speak in front of audiences is a part of our job as English teachers. Not only is it part of our curriculum, but it is also an essential 21st Century skill that is essential for careers and jobs in the future. Context is king, and this means that speeches need audiences. Without an audience, communication doesn’t happen, and our assessment is not valid or authentic as a result of this. “In truth, we can’t really know anything that we can’t communicate.” When we “put serious effort into expressing ourselves” we deepen our knowledge and the knowledge of our audience. So what is this all getting our students to? If a speech isn’t delivered to an audience, it’s not yet a speech. It’s a draft or an idea that hasn’t met its purpose. Because of our obligations (not only to our English curriculum but to our 21st Century learners) at AIIC Carrara, we require all students to deliver their English spoken assessment tasks live, in person, in front of the class. We understand that for young people, this can naturally cause some anxiety. But so can examinations, and as you probably understand, they have to stay too. Senior students enjoyed delivering their speeches in a supportive environment where the same conditions apply to the entire high school cohort. A big thank you for our parents who worked with us to ensure that we meet the curriculum needs and the learning outcomes of English. We know how vital speaking skills are and how they will help students with their future pathways and 21stcentury careers. The whole school enjoyed science demonstration displays and hands on activities. This year’s theme was Deep Blue Ocean.

Hands on activities: It was great

to see Year 3-10’s enthusiastic approach to their hands-on scientific demonstrations. The whole school came together to celebrate all things ocean. Some of the topics we explored were testing PH levels of water, density, chemical reactions in the ocean, coral bleaching, water/land erosion, buoyancy, ocean pollution and how whales stay warm. Extra curricular Activities Golf In Term 3, we offered golf as an extra curricular option for our HS students. Students learnt the main golf skills in putting, chipping and full swing along with strategy and game skills through fun, challenging and student-led activities. The objective of the program is to ensure students are introduced to the game of golf in a manner that suits their ability and skill level by offering different engagement strategies and session design. Keeping students engaged in the program is the key to ensuring they have an enjoyable experience learning golf. Students practiced their skills either on the school oval or at the KDV driving range every Wednesday afternoon.

Pottery Students in high school had the opportunity to participate in the pottery elective this term. The group of 10 girls began the unit by learning how to prepare and recycle clay, a high energy process which involves throwing and beating the clay. Over 10 weeks students had the opportunity to develop new skills creating pinch pots, coil bowls and some unique sculptures, getting very messy in the process!

Woodwork In this elective, students were able to learn practical skills in the art of woodworking. Students were able to measure, cut and prepare their many pieces of wood to construct a planter box following a specific design. They were able to appreciate their hard work and effort involved in constructing this piece. The class got to put together their boxes with trial and error using multiple hand tools.
