Newsletter Issue 4

From The Principal’s Desk As Salaamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakthu Dear parent I trust the Term 2 holiday has been a time to spend more time with loved ones and for renewal. Holidays are essential to catch up with friends and family, to relax, rest and sleep, and unplug in a busy world - all of which are important to our mental, emotional and physical health. After a holiday, we look forward to the start of a new term for your children with a positive outlook and greater motivation. What a term that has just passed. We started the term with Eid-ul Fitr and finished with Eid-al Adha. Even yesterday, to the conclude the Eid festival, the Chairman of the Board was helping to distribute halal meat to the community as part of the feast of the sacrifice. Thank you for your patience with the new carparking arrangements. I this newsletter you will find some of the activities and achievements of your children in the latter half of Term 2. Another feature is the AIIC Alumni Association Dinner on the last day of term under the dynamic leadership of its president and former student Nurul Hakim. Thank you for your support and feedback on the new Strategic Plan. Your input will help guide us in its implementation. To that end, I would like you to consider joining the new AIIC Parents Association, the aim of which is to encourage the participation of all parents in the life of the school and to raise funds for the wellbeing of the school community. Thank you to Sister Fizzah Hasan for advancing this initiative. We will send out a notification via the school app and Facebook page regarding the proposed date for an evening meeting to set up the AIIC Parent Association. Last week, my colleagues participated in three days of staff professional development. This was an excellent opportunity for colleagues from all campuses to meet as a whole team, including staff from the Northern Territory. Two new teachers, Christina Colanis and Kayla Hollingsworth, have been appointed. As well, Rafique Kirsten, will assume a role as Case Manager and Teacher at the Durack Campus and Caecilia Temizer has been promoted to Campus Administrator. Habiba Keshtiar has moved from Year 2 to our Intensive Education – ESL team. Finally, it gives me great pleasure to announce that Dr Raihana Ferdous has been appointed as Deputy Principal (Culture and Wellbeing) of AIIC. On behalf of the Board of Directors, we wish our colleagues every success in their new positions. With best wishes for the term ahead. Andrew Taylor, Principal

Kindergarten News! In Kindergarten we have been looking at and learning about emergency services. This inquiry topic was stemmed from questions, posed by students, regarding the sirens we often hear that pass by our school when we are outside engaged in outdoor activities and learning experiences. Such questions prompted active class discussion: Where did they come from? Where were they going? Is it a police car, ambulance, or fire truck? What do we use them for and why are they so important to our community? In addition to the passing emergency services, children’s interest in this inquiry topic, further stemmed from play experiences with fire trucks, police cars and ambulances. Children actively took on an investigative role into all that is Emergency Services. Together we looked to seek answers to our posed questions of interest. Children found the inquiry process all very exciting! As part of our research process, we were lucky enough to have the Queensland Ambulance Service come to visit and give a presentation on what they are all about. Children were given the opportunity to wear a special paramedic uniform and become paramedics for the day! Throughout the morning they were able ask questions, participate in activities and look at the Ambulance and all the special equipment needed to help people in an accident. Everyone was very excited, and one child stated, with enthusiasm, I’m a Paramedic! The students were invited to look in the Ambulance, practice bandaging and even got to ride on a stretcher! A great learning experience enjoyed by all kindergarten students.

Historical Narrative writing Year 4A

This term in grade 4 we had a tryst with historical narrative writing based on novel Child Convict “Eliza Bird”. Students had a chance to retell the story based on a historical recount which summarised the art of writing a story, depicting a formal introduction, pebbles(a minor problem), stone(problem in connivance of pebbles) and a rock(which is the climax of the story) and finally the resolution of the problem. Students were encouraged to use potent writing tools while attempting to frame a historical narrative text. It was amazing to see students incorporating a sizzling start to their paragraph with an endeavour to accomplish seven steps of writing. An opportunity to see how these bright buttons are showing scenes in their story rather than telling an event. An absolute breath taking amalgamation of rhetorical questions, similes/metaphors, noun clauses and sizzling start. Here are a few excerpts attached as examples of student’s work in class. Keep it up!

Newsletter Science excursion to SPARQ-ed Working-Working with Recombinant DNA workshop. Wednesday, 1st of June, 2022 This science excursion was an opportunity for all the year year 10 students to experience the actual way university students work with real DNA. The AIIC collage has given the student the advantages to explore and expand our education by letting as all work as independent students. Ayan Mohamed , 10A

Our year 10 students attended SPARQ-ed (Students Performing Advanced Research Queensland) workshop, located in the Translational Research Institute (TRI) in Woolloongabba, Brisbane. During the day, students were exposed to laboratory life experience and carry out authentic scientific investigation in biomedical PC2 teaching laboratory under the guidance of scientists and learn how to extract and analyse recombinant DNA from bacteria cells.

Every student has learnt knowledge on how DNA works. It was a successful achievement that was productive, and it inspired some of the students to work with DNA in their future. Could never forget about the great facilities and the great staff that was there that day. They were really helpful and patience with us. Also, everyone had fun and enjoyed their time. Aisha Ikram, 10A

The students are demonstrating their skills of micro-pipetting. They will then view a culture of non-pathogenic DNA containing a plasmid with the GFP gene Definitely, the students that have a great interest in science get inspired by what they see, and they would be eager to achieve their dream in the subject. The students then had lunch in the cafeteria at Princess Alexandra hospital (always a highlight!) and headed back to the PC2 lab to have a look at their Gel-electrophoresis result.

We learnt new information about science along the way, plus we were way out our comfort zone. There were many instances where we had to think out of the box. We had the advantage of going to a laboratory out of the school and experience things, kids in most high schools would not have the chance of doing. We also saw how laboratories work and how maintaining cleanliness in the lab is very important. We enjoyed our time there and overall; the whole experience was very entertaining. Ayan Mohamed, 10A

Feed the Homeless: Food Drive 2022 Active

Volunteering

Our Year 10 students are progressing well in their certificates. The students perform various volunteering activities and one of them is feeding the homeless. Students prepared posters in-class time and visited various primary classes to share what those posters are about. Our primary classes were very curious and asked questions. As you already know, we requested nonperishable items from our school community (staff and students), to donate to the homeless people. We will carry these food items on our visits to Feed the Homeless Project sites every Friday. There will be four visits. Our aim is to prepare 20 bags (3 items in each bag). We will appreciate your generous donation and kind support for our Food Drive. This will encourage our volunteering students immensely.

Current Donation

Ms. Jehaan with Ms. Rahma, who kindly donated the items towards Food Drive 2022

STUDENTS AND STAFF CAN DROP OFF THE DONATION AT THE VET OFFICE ANY DAY BETWEEN 30 MAY – 23 JUNE

Year 10 Digital Technologies Excursion to QUT This term, our Year 10 students had the opportunity to participate in an excursion to the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) for Digital Technologies. The students first engaged in the Code-A-Bot challenge, an interactive digital game focused on collecting and sorting rubbish using programming skills taught in school lessons. The Physics Observatory was also a fun and educational activity for the students where they could explore and observe the differing gravities on planets. Students were then split into two groups and took part in different workshops. The first group attended the Iterate workshop, where they exercised their expertise in user experience design to develop an innovative solution to a STEM-related problem - How can digital technologies help rural communities to manage COVID? The second group participated in the Science Meets Art workshop, where they combined creativity and logic and learned how they could use their skills to communicate concepts to a broad audience. Our students participated enthusiastically and engaged in the workshops and, as a bonus, they were able to listen to QUT student presenters discuss their experiences with life at university. Overall, the Digital Technologies QUT excursion was an educational and enjoyable experience for our Year 10 students.

AIIC Alumni Dinner Friday 24th June 2022

An alumni or alumnae association is an association of graduates or, more broadly, of former students. “Colleagues for life” is how AIIC regards its alumni. Through their annual program of events, the AIIC Alumni Association aims to provide alumni with opportunities to connect socially and for professional networking and development purposes as well as to provide peer support for current students. The AIIC hosted a Dinner for its Alumni on 24th June 2022. The event brought back graduates as far as 2012. For some of the Alumni, it was the first time returning after they had graduated. Many of them were proud of how the College has grown and continues to serve its community.

Nurul Hakim, the President of the AIIC Alumni Association said “AIIC seemed to be the best place that offered me opportunities to grow as a person. AIIC gave me lasting friendships, and the strength and knowledge that I am able to achieve my goals no matter the obstacles faced. My experience in AIIC has taught me true strength, and that it is okay to ask for help from my teachers”.
