Editor's Note Dear Readers Assalamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu

Welcome to our 2016 Yearbook!

I have been very fortunate to be the editor of Australian International Islamic College’s Yearbook since 2007. Over the past 10 years I have designed, edited and published the yearbook to enable you to have a small glimpse into the life of our students, their teachers, members of the faculty and the community during each year. Every year I eagerly prepare myself along with my fellow colleagues to produce a superb product for readers such as yourselves. My task is somewhat time consuming with the managing of the publications overall content, its quality, design and the time-frame which has been allocated or it to be published and distributed before the end of the school year. I would like to congratulate all AIIC staff, parents and especially the students who, after a challenging and rewarding year can finally close another chapter in their lives in preparation for 2017. Insha-Allah. I would like to give a huge thank you to the Principal, staff and teachers for their contributions to the 2016 Yearbook. A special thank you to our founder Imam Abdul Quddoos and to the AIIC Board Members for their support and guidance. May Allah (SWT) keep us all on the right path and safeguard our emaan to have peace within ourselves. Mrs Nurhayat Ertan

Our College The Australian International Islamic College opened in 2002 at 6 Agnes Street, Buranda with 20 students from years 1, 2, and 3 under the name of Brisbane Muslim School.

NEW FACILITIES 2016-2017

In the second year of operation, the school was extended to encompass preschool to year 5 with 60 students at the Buranda site. Durack Campus In response to the high growth of enrolments, a new campus was established in 2005 at Durack. This campus is built on 30 acres of land, which allows the positioning of classroom buildings and facilities well away from the hustle and bustle of roads. The adjoining environmental park at the rear of the property enhances the serenity, peace, and quietness of the campus. The Durack Campus offers education from Kindergarten to Year 12 using syllabus materials from ACEAR (Australian Curriculum a in the from of the Australian National Curriculum) and The Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA), which is the statutory education body of the Queensland Government.

NEW LIBRARY & 3 CLASSROOM PREPARATORY

NEW PREPARATORY PLAYGROUND

The size of the site at Durack has enabled the construction of sports grounds, provides ample space to build the college mosque, student hostel, and provide ample parking space. The College established a well-equipped multipurpose hall in 2010. The multipurpose hall has classrooms, storage rooms and a commercial kitchen. The hall has the ability to facilitate College and local community functions. It also has a full size stage with professional sound and lighting systems for the staging of college and community events. The administration building and five classrooms with undercroft are currently being constructed and will be ready for the start of 2017 school year. Both buildings will be fully equiped to cater for growing administrative and education needs of the College.

NEW ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

Gold Coast Campus: The Australian International Islamic College established its Gold Coast Campus in January 2010 at 19 Chisholm Road, Carrara on a 10 acre site in order to serve the Gold Coast Community. The Gold Coast Campus offers prep to year 6 primary school and year 7 to 10 secondary school education. The campus has a multipurpose hall which accommodates indoor sports activities, presentations and functions. A new, larger car park has been constructed and new demountable classrooms have been installed to be used by the increasing student numbers.

NEW ADMINISTRATION BUILDING

Reactivating Buranda Campus In 2013, the Buranda campus was reactivated to provide educational services for prep to year 4 students that live closer to the city. This campus currently has 17 students who join with their Durack colleagues for sports days, extracurricular activities and other events. In 2017 Buranda Campus will cater for students from Prep to Year 6 in its surrounding suburbs. Page 4

Founder’s Message Bismillahir-Rahmaanir Raheem In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful

Alhamdu Lillahi Rabil Aallameen Praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds Dear Parents, teachers, staff members, students and friends. Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you)

I would like to congratulate all Australian International Islamic College families for the successful completion of the 2016 academic year, a year full of events, activities, ceremonies and development. May Allah accept and bless all our efforts. During this year’s school FETE on 28 August 2016, I welcomed, met and greeted the dignitaries, officials, politicians, parents and students. Among the people I met was a group of young people who came to me and greeted me and said, “Do you remember us Imam?” “Yes, I do, some of you were AIICs students.” I remembered these students because they were the first batch of Rohingyan Refugee students of 2009 and 2010. These were the students who came to AIIC with NIL English and had never been exposed to any school system. I asked them what they were doing now. One of them said he was doing medicine; another is doing law, while another one said biomedical. The forth one told me he was doing engineering. I felt great and proud. What a wonderful feeling. It is rightly said that to educate a child the whole village is to be involved, the whole community to be concerned for academic advancement and personal achievement. The student must have the desire to learn. The teachers and educators must help them to learn, prepare them and motivate them to learn. It is equally important that the parents and the community must come together and provide them the educational environment, support and resources to help assist them both with the students and educators. We would like to see our students to be focused on acquiring key academic skills, the capacity to contribute to their community, well-grounded knowledge and an understanding of Islamic values and discipline. We would also like to see our students develop an understanding of middle path and appreciate the inclusive approach to promoting peace and harmony within the Australian multicultural context and to serve the human society as a whole. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our honourable Principal, learned teachers, honoured Imams, administration and secretariat, supportive staff members, bus drivers and volunteers. My special thanks go to the P & C and all parents for entrusting their children to our care during the 2016 academic year. I look forward to welcoming you all back for the 2017 academic year. Insha Allah. Duties of Children Towards Their Parents Imam Abdul Quddoos’s Speech to Australian International Islamic College P&C Advisory Committee Bismillahir-Rahmaanir Raheem In the name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful Dear Parents & Citizens Advisory Committee Members Assalamu Alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you) “And your Lord has judged that you may not worship any except Him, and He has commanded that goodness and kindness must be shown to parents.” “And if one or both of them attain old age while they are with you, do not say “off!” to them, and neither rebuke them, but speak to them kind and generous words.” “And lower the wing of humility to them out of mercy, and say: “O my Lord! Have mercy upon them, as they took care of me while I was a small child.” (Al Qur’an 17: 23-24) It is very important to note that in these aayaat the responsibility of goodness and kindness towards one’s parents comes second only to tawheed, or worshipping Allah alone and not associating any partners with Him. The significance is that Allah is the Creator and only He deserves to be worshipped. The parents are the people who have brought you up and cared for you when you were dependent and unable to survive without their help. Allah has therefore instructed us to approach them with respect and kindness. And this respect and kindness are the essence of the relationship. In old age, people tend to become progressively weaker, both physically and mentally. It is the responsibility of the younger generation to bear the responsibility of supporting their parents during that time. It may also be that the elderly lose the social and intellectual control that they had while they were young. These conditions may cause them even agony and grief. Therefore, they need to be consoled and given special respect so that they may not feel deprived and dependent. The importance of this is reflected in the fact that goodness to the parents has been repeated again and again throughout the Qur’an. It is natural that the elderly will become more demanding and dependent. Younger people may get impatient and frustrated with this attitude at times. But they should not be disheartened and discouraged; rather they should be patient, treat their parents generously, and pray for them with the words that Allah Himself has told us to pray: And say: “O my Lord! Have mercy upon them, as they took care of me while I was a small child.” (Al Qur’aan 17: 25) Ask Allah to have mercy on your parents as they had mercy on you. They probably did their best to take care of you, and they sacrificed many hours of their sleep and other comforts for you. Today the roles are reversed: today is their day of weakness and helplessness, and it is now upon you to care for them. But realise this: that you will never be able to care for them with the same degree of care that they showed to you. It is because of this that they deserve our respect, our kindness and our prayers. The Book of Allah and the authentic Ahaadeeth of the Prophet (s.a.w.) are full of guidance regarding the treatment of one’s parents. It is reported that the Prophet (s.a.w.) said: Paradise is under the feet of the mothers. A man came to the Prophet (s.a.w.) and he was ready to go for jihaad. The Prophet (s.a.w.) asked him: Are your parents still living? The man replied that they were. He (s.a.w.) said: Go back and look after them. That is your jihaad. It is absolutely necessary to help your parents in times of need, to speak to them kindly and respectfully. Never ever disobey them, unless they order you to commit an act of disobedience to Allah. Listen carefully to what they say, and to not argue with them even if they happen to be at fault. Explain the truth to them with courtesy and patience. A man’s relationship with his wife and children should not come in the way of his relationship with his parents. His responsibility to his parents comes first, and then his responsibility to his family. Each must be given their due importance. If your wife complains that she feels neglected due to you fulfilling the rights of your parents, then you must explain to her the responsibility that you have towards your parent. If your parents order you to commit disobedience to Allah, it is not allowed for you to obey them in that case. But you should behave in a polite and respectful way. The Prophet Ibraaheem (a.s.) said to his father, who was a kaafir and a mushrik: “Peace be upon you”. And it must be noted for the brothers and sisters who are converts to Islam, that all of these rights apply to our non-Muslim parents as well.

Page 6

Australian International Islamic College - 2016 Yearbook

No child may become a cause of harm to his parents. All mistakes in this life can perhaps be understood and explained away, but not those committed against parents. Disobedience, neglect and unkindness are considered to be among the kabaa’ir, or major sins. Even after they have passed away, there are certain duties that still continue to be required, such as praying for them, fulfilling any debts or other obligations that they had, and honouring their friends and relatives. However much a child may be in a state of disagreement with his parents, he must never say an angry or disrespectful word, whatever his position is. He must be humble and of great service to his parents, both inside the house and out. One should never boast or display pride in front of one’s parents about one’s skill, education, position or anything else. Parents deserve to be visited regularly and given gifts whenever possible. Pray for their well-being, and ask Allah to have mercy on them. Remember the famous hadeeth of the Prophet (s.a.w.): When a person dies, his deeds are cut off, except for three: Sadaqah Jaariyah (continuous charity), beneficial knowledge, and a righteous child that prays for him. (Al Bukhari) During the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.) there was a man named ‘Alqamah who was very devoted to performing salaah, fasting and giving charity. One day he became fatally ill. As he lay dying, he was asked to say the Shahaadah, but he was unable to do so. Upon hearing of this, the Prophet (s.a.w.) said: Is his mother still alive? They told him that she was. She came to him (s.a.w.) and he asked her: Tell me in truth how your son ‘Alqamah has been. She said: “O Messenger of Allah! He performs much salaah, fasting and giving charity, but I am angry with him because he preferred his wife over me, and he disobeyed me.” The Prophet (s.a.w.) then said: The anger of ‘Alqamah’s mother has prevented his tongue from uttering the Shahaadah. He then ordered for a huge bundle of firewood to be collected. ‘Alqamah’s mother asked: “O Messenger of Allah, what will you do?” He replied (s.a.w.): I am going to burn him on this fire in front of you. She said: “O Messenger of Allah! My son! My heart cannot bear to have him burnt before my eyes!” He then said (s.a.w.): O Umm ‘Alqamah, Allah’s punishment is greater and more lasting. If you want Allah to forgive him, then show that you are pleased with him. By Him in Whose Hand is my life, ‘Alqamah will not benefit from his salaah, fasting and charity as long as you are angry with him. Thereupon, ‘Alqamah’s mother said: “O Messenger of Allah! I call Allah to witness, and the angels and those Muslims who are present here with me, that I am pleased with my son ‘Alqamah.” Thereafter, ‘Alqamah’s tongue was released and he repeated the words of the Shahaadah. On that day he passed away. The Prophet (s.a.w.) himself performed his Janaazah and reminded the Muslims of the gravity of the sin of making one’s mother or father angry, and the reward of keeping their satisfaction and pleasure, as he (s.a.w.) said: Shall I not tell you of the worst of the major sins? They are to associate partners with Allah and to disobey the parents. In another hadeeth, we read that one day the Prophet (s.a.w.) descended from the minbar. When he mounted the first step, he said: Aameen. He said this again upon mounting the second and third steps. The Sahaabah asked him: “O messenger of Allah! We have heard you say something today that we never heard you say before.” He said to them: Jibreel appeared in front of me and said: “Disgraced is the one who reached the end of Ramadaan and did not gain forgiveness,” and I said: “Aameen”; and on the second step he said: “Disgraced is the one in front of whom your name was mentioned and he did not send prayers upon you,” and I said: “Aameen”; and on the third step he said: “Disgraced is the one whose parents reached old age with him and he did not earn a place in Paradise due to serving them,” and I said: “Aameen”. The first person, due to either the fact that he did not observe the fast of Ramadaan at all, or that he observed it but did not refrain from backbiting and other sins, will not receive the reward of forgiveness at the end of the month. The second person – and it is sad to note that there are many of these people in our community today – did not send prayers on the Prophet (s.a.w.) whenever he mentioned his name or heard his name mentioned, even though Allah has made it obligatory upon us to do so when He says: “Verily, Allah and His angels send prayers upon the Prophet. O you who believe! Send prayers and abundant peace upon him.” (Al Qur’an 33: 56) And the third person had his parents grow old while he was alive, and yet he did not give them their due respect and kindness. Therefore, because he did not fulfil the rights of his parents, he will be blocked from entering Paradise. May Allah give us the tawfeeq to improve our relationships with our parents and to treat them with more kindness and mercy. May He enable us to fulfil all of their rights, and cause us to enter Paradise due to that. Principal’s Message Asalaamu Alaikum Wa Rahmatullahi Wa Barakatuhu (May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon you) We have come to the end of another incredible school year at the Australian International Islamic College. It has been an honour and a pleasure to have served you as your principal over the past 3 years. The constant reference to our mission statement “Unwavering commitment to deliver excellence in education and develop students of good character and be of benefit to the wider Australian Communities and Nations” has really made a huge difference in realising our purpose and vision to commit ourselves to academic excellence. At the commencement of this year we reflected on the many outstanding achievements in 2015. Our goal was to better ourselves this year and to ensure that every student is given the best opportunities, as we believe that every child deserves the best education that we can possibly give. Our new approach to curriculum support for teachers and the professional development opportunities provided during the course of the year has made a great big difference to curriculum delivery and quality teaching. Academically it has been a very rewarding year. Our students showed great improvements in their NAPLAN outcomes. Student performance in the ICAS competitions, Australian Mathematics competitions and the Science competitions showed excellent outcomes. The focus this year was to balance our extracurricular and sports with our academics. In doing so we have developed a good balance between both. A very successful sports program continued throughout the year and we had some of our students represent the college at district level. Well done to many students who have experienced success throughout this year. You should feel proud of your efforts. Our year 12 students will be leaving us at the end of the year and saying goodbye to them has always been a very sad moment, particularly those who have spent all their schooling years at our college. I am grateful to be part of an enthusiastic and committed team of teachers and would like to thank each and everyone of them for really making a huge difference. The college, under the guidance of the board has developed an excellent Business/Strategic plan that has directed the college in its decisions to enable development, improvements and growth. Our accomplishments are certainly remarkable for 2016. My job as principal has been challenging, but rewarding because of the competence and support of the amazing team of people with whom I work. A special thanks to all students, staff, photographers, graphic designers and everyone else who assisted in producing this year book. Your support and dedication is very much appreciated. I extend my gratitude to the entire AIIC family and community for the way you continue to support us, our teachers and our students. I look forward to continue my leadership and direction of the college focussing on our mission statement and strategic plan. I wish you a great vacation and I look forward to seeing you all next year Insha’Allah. Mrs Mariam Banwa - Principal Higher Diploma in Education, Pre/Junior Primary Ed. Operational Coordinator’s Report Assalamualikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu It is with great pleasure that I write this message as Operational Coordinator of, the Australian International Islamic College (AIIC). As the Operational Coordinator of a College with such an excellent reputation, I am inspired daily by my colleagues and students who work closely together to create a unique College community we fondly call the AIIC family. Our College mission “Unwavering commitment to deliver excellence in education and develop students of good character and of benefit to the wider Australian Communities and Nations” hinges on our strong beliefs that every member of this family is a leader and well anchored in the right values, as our school motto encapsulates: Excellence in Education, Character and Service” In their quiet ways, AIIC students thrive on challenges and balances them with grace and resilience. As our students embark on their new journey at AIIC, they will discover for themselves a road to self-discovery, development and fulfilment of potential. Life is a journey on which we want our students to remember where they came from and appreciate what they have gained, but we also guide our students to find out where they are going and focus on pursuing their dreams. As a College with rich Islamic traditions and a strong multi-cultural emphasis, we take great pride in cultivating young leaders who are not only experts in Mathematics and Science but also in other academic areas with deep appreciation and understanding of multiculturalism. While deeply rooted in tradition, we celebrate diversity. At AIIC, we set high standards, yet seek to continuously create and maintain a nurturing and supportive environment in which everyone feels appreciated. We value everyone – our students, staff, the Principal, Board, Chairman, alumni and parents – who strongly believe in working together. As we soar to new heights, it is these partnerships that secure our place at the very forefront of education on the global stage. I look forward to you joining us as we celebrate our achievements in the weeks, months and years ahead. Kind regards, Dr Mohammad Nurul Islam Operational Coordinator

Curriculum Coordinator’s Report We truly have a wonderful team of teachers at AIIC who have worked extremely hard to plan and develop exciting teaching and learning episodes. Our goal is to provide excellence in education and one way to do this is through planning. With support from the Curriculum Team (Andrea Wardale and Maneesha Iqbal), We have revisited our planning to ensure it is aligned with the national Australian Curriculum. Every term, teachers were asked to produce quality planning with learning objectives, teacher activities, student activities, differentiated learning tasks and reflections. All teachers met this challenge and for some it is the reflection part that influences our future teaching. As a College and with a whole school approach, this year we introduced a program called Personal Social and Health Education. It gives children the knowledge, skills and understanding that they need to stay healthy and safe, develop worthwhile relationships, respect differences, develop independence and make the most of their own abilities and those of others to take responsibility for their own actions. Students and teachers identified topics to be covered and planned interesting, interactive lessons on a variety of subjects. This is a subject where we really want to hear what the students have to say, for them to have a voice and be heard in discussions and debates. Our work does not stop with the holidays. Every holiday the teachers are preparing for the following term or the new school year. We will continue to develop our educational programs with a further focus on quality assessment and reporting.

Harmony Day / Anti -Bullying On Monday the 21st of March, A.I.I.C. celebrated Harmony Day and took part in the National Day of Action Against Bullying for the second year running. The School Captains gave a speech about the importance of harmony and the strong stance we are taking against bullying at our school. This was followed by role plays and videos enacting anti-bullying strategies by the primary and secondary student council. The AIIC nasheed group also performed two songs on stage, including the nasheed ‘Rasoolullah’ and the uplifting ‘Orange Ribbon Song’ which had all students joining in. The assembly was followed by class visits to country displays in the hall. Each year level had taken responsibility for preparing a stall on a country which participates in the Olympic games. Teachers and students had tremendous fun visiting the Harmony Day stalls and doing the activities prepared, including face painting, flag colouring, henna design, writing their name using Japanese letters and tasting food from different cultures. The day was topped off by afternoon cultural and Olympic sporting activities with country verses country. Students went home with a smile on their face and stronger team spirit in their hearts.

ANZAC COMMEMORATION CEREMONY AT AIIC On Friday 22nd of April our school had our ANZAC day commemoration this was the finale of our ANZAC day activities where students from the student council (Years 6-12) went to the city centre of Brisbane and participated in ANZAC ceremonies at ANZAC Square. During the week the school students were involved in making a large number of poppies out of paper for display on their blazers and school uniforms. The poppies made represented Flanders fields from the Western Front in World War I. The ANZAC day assembly was run by teachers Irfan Meduselac and Chris Crane with special guest Michael Griffin from Sherwood Retired Services League. We were lucky to have a range of performances from many of the classes in primary and high school showing their commitment to remembering the ANZAC soldiers who gave their lives to preserve the safety, opportunities and way of life we hold dear in Australia. We also acknowledged the soldiers from other battles and wars who have also given their lives so that we can be safe in Australia.

Greetings! from Prep 1 We have had an enjoyable busy year in Prep 1 and are amazed at the growth in learning among our delightful students. When the wide eyed little learners first entered Prep they were so small, and now they are confident people eager to start year one. The time has gone so quickly, with laughter and tears, but most of all, lots of fun learning activities that have filled us with many fond memories. Our main focus has been on these great topics.

One of our highlights was the Fair Dinkum incursion, a hugely exciting learning experience, enjoyed by all of us. We were entertained by two wonderful performers, who brought to life fun, captivating stories.

We wish all our students a wonderful transition to the world of year one. We are so very proud of each and every one of you. We will miss your happy cheerful faces. Ms. Hampshire and Ms. Ali Page 40

with Mrs Reed and Mrs Kaniz We have lived, loved, laughed, played, studied, learned and enriched our lives together this year in Prep 2. We investigated all kinds of exciting themes including: • • • • • • •

Fairytales Nursery rhymes Our family Brazilian Animals The Olympics Under the deep blue sea And much more…

My first year teaching Prep has definitely been a memorable one and I am proud of each and every one of my student’s accomplishments this year. I leave these students, the same students who came to Prep at the beginning of the year, eager for their first day of school. I leave them centimetres taller, months wiser, more responsible and more mature than they were back then. Have a look at some of the fun things we did! Sophia Reed – Prep 2 Teacher

PREP 3 I believe that every child can succeed and in Prep we say that we have to try and the more you try the better you become. It is this attitude not to give up that has seen such wonderful learning happening. In Term 1 the children’s focus of learning was on their family, their food and their body. Lots of hands on activities made the learning fun - especially the swimming program! Literacy learning is fun when you use Jolly Phonics, the children loved the visual introduction of new sounds and language continued with our Term 2 theme of ‘Nursery rhymes and fairytales’. I have a violin that is missing a string and so out of tune so when I brought it out the children were mesmorised in anticipation …..only I can’t play the violin but, I played as if I were a maestro screeching the bow back and forth. The highlight of the term was the excursion to Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC) to watch a performance of ‘Little Red Riding Hood’ where the children discovered that all the wolf wanted was a friend. By Term 3, the children are consistently outdoing themselves. They had learnt so many phonemes they were reading and writing. Books were taken home, read and returned – Masha-Allah to have a class of so many wonderful readers. We started Term 3 with the Olympics and we were off to Rio!! We followed the medals that our different countries were winning and charted the medals. Along the way we focused on information reports on rainforest animals and learnt some interesting facts. With the hot weather of spring and summer, Term 4 focussed on “Under the sea” and “Weather”. Safety at the beach and in the sun are a must for every child. They know to stay between the flags, to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide for sun safety and we went swimming again! I wish to thank parents for entrusting their child’s learning with me and your child did succeed. They are so ready for Year 1. Ursula Muncaster Prep 3 Teacher

Year 1 A with Miss Azima Omar We have had a fantastic 2016 in our Year 1A classroom. This year one of our focuses was teamwork. We displayed this within the classroom during group activities in all subject areas. Collaborating with other students gives the students the opportunity to learn from each other, listen to different points of view and to actively listen to each other.

In class we made prayer mats for Salah, created and drew masjids of the world and had Ramadaan charts as part of integrating Islamic knowledge into our classroom. We learnt many everyday Surah’s and Duas such as the Dua before eating. We practised every day to ensure that they became part of our daily routine.

Page 46

In English we learnt about procedures, stories, descriptive posters, poems and information reports. We enjoyed learning about procedures through recipes. We learnt how to make fruit kebabs, strawberry milkshakes and banana smoothies. Throughout the year we continued to learn sight words and build on our phonemic awareness of letters. Every week we visited the library with enthusiasm and a keen interest in learning more knowledge from reading books. One of our favourite books was Possum Magic by Mem Fox. We discovered that many of us were not familiar with some types of the Australian food types such as pavlova, tuna mornay, vegemite sandwiches, minties, ANZAC biscuits and lamingtons. At the end of the term we had a Possum magic food themed party to celebrate our achievements. Our greatest achievement this year was receiving second place for our district in the Literacy Planet Word

Australian International Islamic College - 2016 Yearbook

In Maths we learnt strategies on addition, subtraction, grouping and sharing. We explored measurement, time, patterns, maps and directions, 2D and 3D shapes, probability and money. We enjoyed all the hands on activities especially learning how to measure capacity with sand and learning fractions with jam sandwiches. In Science we learnt about the human body, 5 senses, body coverings of Australian animals and the properties of everyday materials such as wood, paper and metal. We visited Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary for our excursion on Australian animals. We loved feeding the kangaroos and emus. We also discovered a lot of information through experiments such as how secondary colours are made, how to look after our teeth, why our skin should be protected from the sun, how sound travels and how a rainbow is made. On science day we observed the experiments of different year levels and even got covered in the gas experiment.

In our Technology lessons we designed and created hats and spacecraft. We used the computers to learn literacy and how to stay safe online. We used the interactive whiteboards to extend our knowledge. In Art we focused on different artists and used their work to inspire our own. We researched Vincent Van Gogh, Wassily Kandinsky and Salvador Dali. This year has been an amazing journey of learning. We can’t wait for Year 2! We will leave you with advice and comments to the future Year 1 students. Written by Miss Azima Omar and all the Year 1A students.

From the class of Year 1C with Miss Banwa

What an amazing Year! We spent our time learning and engaging in many fun-filled activities, exploring exciting topics and participating in wonderful hands-on tasks. This year we journeyed through many changes and worked well as a team to achieve our goals.

Our students especially enjoyed the extra-curricular activities at our college and the fun excursions we have had in Year 1. When learning about procedures, we became very creative, putting on our mini Master-chef hats to bring our procedures to life. We followed many recipes and made delicious treats. We also enjoyed learning about Australian animals and visiting them at Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary. Swimming was certainly the activity we all enjoyed the most, we learnt how to be safe in the water and had a lot of fun with our friends.

Page 52

Australian International Islamic College - 2016 Yearbook

At our College, we had many fun days, which allowed us to explore topics through hands-on, fun experiences. Science Day was an exciting day for us in Year 1 as we had the opportunity to walk around and view fantastic experiments, learnt about how robots work, and much more. We especially enjoyed the dinosaur incursion and even got a chance to see a life-size dinosaur skeleton. During class time, we enjoyed making our lessons more fun while using the interactive whiteboard.

Students enjoyed learning about Ramadan, Eid and Hajj. We explored these topics through many fun activities, crafts, nasheeds and informative videos. We searched for the new moon and focused on doing a good deed for each day during the month of Ramadan. We also enjoyed creating a Kabah and learning about the importance of Hajj.

Comparing the past with present

At Beenleigh Historical Village Museum

Old schools old benches and slates, but with new students of 3A and 3B

2016 - another successful and accomplished year for Year 3A! The year started when we looked back at early Australia and how things have changed over the time. We visited the Beenleigh Historical Village Museum on the 29 March to learn about how people in Australia lived in the past. Students explored how people in the olden days used to carry out their daily errands. The students experienced washing clothes in the olden days, the types of schools that Australians would go to, the different type of punishment students would get in those days, the types of jobs people would have to do to earn their living such as cutting trees, dairy, farming, blacksmith etc... and how difficult and time consuming it was in comparison to what they have today. We even realised how difficult it was to even store things for long period of time as there were no refrigeration facilities. Later in May students visited the Rail Workshop Museum in Ipswich, where again they explored how people travelled in older types of trains and carriages. The students viewed some of the oldest trains, their engines and coaches. They actually sat in the olden day coaches and modern coaches comparing them to their present lifestyle. Queensland’s very first train to run, steamed from the Rail Workshop to the Biggie’s Camp (now Grandchester) in 1865. Students viewed locomotives built in 1926. They compared the old steam locomotives to modern day electric trains. Along with everything else we also learned how the internet works and presented these as a model for Science Day. We came fourth on the Science Day with our display. We investigated different celebrations around the world and understood their importance and significance. We realised the purpose of celebrations in our lives and made great presentations. Becoming aware of many famous authors and reading their books was great fun, as well this year. The students wrote funny recipes like the Twits did was even more fun.

2016 in 4Brilliant…

We’ve learned a lot about world history; from 14th century explorers to the First Fleet and the Eora people of Sydney. Through geographical studies we now know to take special care of the earth that we all share.

With subjects like English or Math we find it best when we put our learning to the test. Real life situations are the go, you’ll see us out and about on excursions, or working on a project and letting our creativity flow.

Next year awaits our brilliant cohort, with all its challenges, joys and so forth. I wish them the best for the coming journey, may they reap the fruits of all their learning! Mrs. M Iqbal 4B Class Teacher

Dear Parent/Carers,

City Camp

What a year!

Another successful year draws to a close. It is amazing how much has been achieved by the children, staff and parents in one year. This has been a very busy and amazing year! It’s always impossible to list all of the highlights but from the smallest achievements to the limelight moments we have adored watching your children grow socially, academically and personally. It’s been a year filled with laughter and some outstanding accolades! I speak not only of our children here but everyone connected to the school. I cannot thank you all enough or praise your efforts too highly. We achieve so much because we work together as a team and this is one of the greatest strengths of the school. It is difficult to identify the highlights because there are genuinely so many. Personally, I have thoroughly enjoyed teaching, guiding, motivating and building a ‘learning culture’ in all the students at AIIC City Campus. The children worked incredibly hard over the year but also had a fantastic time. This year my top memories centre around the trip to the City Library, Ngutana-Lui Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Cultural Studies Centre, The Daikum Musical, Twelfth Night Theatre and the Planetarium and sporting events . The end of Term 3 was marked by our Open and Jalsa Day and in Term 4 we had Drama Day. I have to acknowledge the remarkable effort of our students who made the event a huge success. We have a very successful school culture at AIIC’s City Campus with a strong emphasis on academics but we constantly try to maintain or improve where possible. As I reflect on the school year I can’t help but marvel at the obvious delight emanating from the faces of the children I see every day. The atmosphere of joyful learning has become widespread and contagious. I see it in the students in awe of their beautiful environment where the possibilities to learn seem endless. Their contentment is also expressed with the warm greetings I receive from the students every day. A love of learning is sustained through the entire school. We have awesome kids here at AIIC’s City Campus who are exuberant with their desire to learn more. They come to school every day willing, ready and able to learn together. I am absolutely proud of all our students and their achievements but as I always say there is always something to work on or improve. 2016 has been a happy and successful year for us at AIIC’s City Campus and we intend to end the year on a very high note. Big thanks to all the parents for your excellent support throughout the year. We will continue to develop a “learning culture” in our students where students will accept responsibility for their learning. As we near the summer holidays, I want to wish you and your family a safe and enjoyable summer vacation. We look forward to seeing everyone’s eager, cheery faces next year. Best wishes! City Campus Arabic and Islamic Studies Department

Looking back at the year 2016, it can be said confidently that Alhamdulillah, this year was a very successful year in terms of learning for our students. Our children showed great enthusiasm for learning Arabic, Islamic and Quranic studies. This year students increased their knowledge in Islamic history, Jurisprudence, Creed, Islamic Ethos and Values. Special attention was given to Cleanliness, Wudhu and Salah, daily guidance was given in these areas by our Imam and teachers. This has helped students to understand their responsibilities and duties towards Allah SWT and has increased their concentration and devotion whilst performing acts of worship. This year students were also actively involved in learning about Hajj the 5th pillar of Islam. They learnt about the days and the rituals that are carried out during Hajj and made small replicas of the Kaba. All students have learnt the Talbiyah in Arabic that is continuously recited by those who perform the Hajj or Umrah. To reinforce their learning of Hajj, students learnt a song that sums the rituals performed at Hajj. A special request is made to all parents to be actively involved in their children’s Islamic upbringing by ensuring that they read Quran and observe their prayers on a daily basis. With the help of parents and teachers, Inshallah we will be able to give our children the best upbringing, for that will assist them in this world and the hereafter. Gold Coast Campus Coordinator’s Report As the 2016 school year came to an end, I reflected in admiration and respect on the work that has been done by our students, teachers, administrators and all others involved with the AIIC Gold Coast Campus, in making our mission of “Excellence in Education, character and Service” a reality. Of course, none of our successes would be possible without the cooperation and contributions of the students, staff, and the support of the parents. The 2016 academic year saw the College shine in many events and achievements. We saw our Prep, Year 6 and Year 10 graduating classes of 2016, make the College proud with their achievements throughout their schooling. We also saw our high school students shine in their College show case working with Emmanuel College while participating in an inter-school social and educational program. Our students also performed extremely well in the areas of sporting and the creative and practical arts, as we saw in the annual college production/Jalsa and other performances that the students participated in. Their creative talents were on display and we encourage them to keep up their great work. Our teachers also facilitated for our students Maker-spaces/ Extra-curricular activities for our students to learn to use materials as well as develop creative projects. These activities promoted multi-age learning through play, trial and error and building bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood. The most important idea and objective was to; • Foster play, exploration and participatory learning • Facilitate informal learning opportunities where connections between home, school, and community are enabled and encouraged. • Collaborative learning where educators and students pooled their skills and knowledge and share in the tasks of teaching and learning; • Developing a culture of creating as opposed to consuming On a spiritual note, we celebrated Ramadhan/EID’s and the school-wide Hajj demonstration together. These are important milestones for our children in their spiritual journey. Students from various grades participated in many spiritual events, youth nights, activities such as feeding of the poor, helping the homeless, donating a record 1200 boxes of toys/ resources for refugee children and supporting local charities. All these activities will help our students live their spirituality in their everyday lives and will bring them closer to Allah. The end of August and September were a time of excitement, for our students with the historical visit of representatives of the Islamic Judiciary department from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and the amalgamation of high school student achievements through their Youth Led Social Projects with Emmanuel College. This was ultimately aimed at one goal: the consolidation, celebration and understanding of our Islamic faith and cultural heritage. 2016 has also seen our teachers Collaborate with the Durack Campus with the effective implementation of National Curriculum. AIIC continues to respond to the changing landscape that typifies education today and is in the process of exploring the International Baccalaureate (IB) as the new curriculum in 2017. Staff at the College are committed to providing an education that both challenges and nurtures students, and involves work beyond the classroom in academic pursuits as well as community service. Our students never cease to amaze and have experienced success in all aspects of College life, be it academic, cultural or sporting. The AIIC Gold Coast strives for an education that aims to empower students to make a positive difference in their world. There was much emphasis in 2016 on ensuring that we challenged students to achieve their personal best through accurate identification of their abilities. Additionally, the teaching staff received on-going professional development from Independent Schools Queensland (ISQ) and professional collaboration with Somerset College and Benowa State School to ensure that they shared and received professional expertise from different schools and sectors. Thank you to the AIIC College Leadership Team for their hard work and dedication and to our non-teaching staff, and Admin whom we rely on so much and who contribute quietly and efficiently to our success. The commitment and professionalism of staff – both teaching and non-teaching – is affirmed and appreciated. This report provides a snapshot of the many exciting educational programs on offer, in progress and of the unique culture of AIIC’s Gold Coast Campus. Prep Class of Gold Coast Campus This year the Prep students have accomplished so many things. There has been tremendous amount of learning which has taken place during the year. Throughout the year the Prep students a demonstrated good character, obedience and respect towards others. This reflected on their good behaviour throughout the year. They certainly know how to be a good Muslim. At the beginning of the year some students found it difficult to adjust to their new environment and often asked first thing in the morning if it was home time soon. However, it did not take long for everyone to feel comfortable and settle into their new class. They soon realised that coming to school and engaging in fun activities became a routine. Making new friends, meeting new classmates and getting involved in lots of fun hands on activities made the transition smoother. We shared many great experiences together from holding a pencil, playing games to learn about new topics, reading, writing, maths, technology and many more to improve our skills. I am so proud of all my Prep students, for all the hard work, determination and their accomplishments this year and thank their parents and caregivers for entrusting the learning of their children to me. Take a look at the pictures. It will provide you with the different activities the students were involved in during the year. Mrs Azara Khan (Prep Teacher)

year 4’s learning journey Ma Sha Allah! What a busy and exciting year 2016 has been for the Year 4’s. The growth in student enrolment in our Gold Coast Campus has created a need for students in Year 4 to be allocated into their very own classroom. This positive step has resulted in the students seizing the opportunity of taking ownership of their learning and their environment. The students were also blessed with having an additional teacher for a whole term. Mrs. Tawheed was also very eager and dedicated to see the Year 4 students reach their full potential. In 2006 students have focused on building and consolidating their knowledge gained throughout the year. Here is a rundown of all the hard work the students been engaged in. In English, students engaged in learning various forms of poetry including that of cinquains, limerick and shape poetry. They used descriptive language to enhance meaning and messaging that can be portrayed through poetry. Students acted out parts of their poems, sharing their ideas with the classroom. Students also engaged in understanding the format, messaging and requirements for letter writing. This was an essential part of learning appropriate language and style required for a text type. In Mathematics, students focused on building their existing knowledge on fractions, multiplication and measurement. Through understanding the components of measurement, capacity and conversion, students were able to explore various aspects and uses of capacity in their everyday lives. In particular, as class students were able to make pancakes using the various measurement tools required in baking. In Science, students learnt about the various life cycles of plants and animals. The students went all hands on when they planted and recorded the growth and cycle of their own bean plants. Students also explored aspects of materials and their associated properties. This knowledge was then used to complete an egg drop investigation and experiment. Students were to create a package using a strawberry punnet, a single egg and selected materials with the aim of ensuring the egg did not break when dropped from onemetre-high. Students were required to use higher order thinking to challenge their existing mindset on the best materials used to cushion a drop. The outcomes were very interesting and the students enjoyed this experiment very much!

Page 96

In Geography students learnt the importance of protecting the planet through adopting sustainable practices. Students engaged in recycling, composting and exploring ways to overall manage waste. The use of natural resources in everyday lives was discussed and students created posters with their messages on ways to protect the planet by using natural resources wisely. In History students explored various famous explorers throughout history. The children were very excited and enthusiastic to learn that one of the many famous explorers Ibn Batutta was a Muslim. Students also explored the life of convicts on the First Fleet. Through cross curricular learning, students created their own convict profile and wrote diary entries expressing their thoughts, feelings, emotions, habits, activities and daily schedule. They also learnt about the amazing Aboriginal culture and the tragic events that accord with them in early Australian settlement. Through the experience of learning about world explorers and the First Fleet, students’ imagination enabled them to become authors of various narratives and recount writing pieces. In Art, students learnt about the history and skill of Aboriginal Art, weaving and tessellating patterns. They also learnt about the concept of “Up Cycling” whereby art was created using materials that would have otherwise been thrown in the rubbish bin. This was an interesting exercise and students were challenged to think outside the box on creative uses for rubbish. Students were able to create bags and portraits made out of recyclable materials. In H.P.E, the students were very lucky to enjoy learning how to preform various gymnastic movements correctly and skilfully, ball skills including how to play AFL with the AFL Suns! Students learned to explore and enhance their gross motor skills, ball techniques and team playing. I’m extremely proud of the grade 4 students, they have really attempted to shine and never give up. Although I will truly miss having them in the class, I do want to see them to go onto bigger and greater experiences. I pray to Allah Subhana Watallah to bestow his blessings, guidance and protection on them wherever they go in this Dunia. Allahooma Ameen. Mrs. Lena Hallak-Year 4 Teacher

This year our Year 5/6 class has been engaged in many activities. Students were involved in many hands on activities such as science experiments. Year 5 students experimented on how light forms colour, reflects and refracts light. They have also been investigating on how shadows differ in size dependent on the distance of the object.

2016 - YEAR 5/6 ACADEMIC JOURNEY

Year 6 students had the opportunity to design electric circuits, understanding how different types of energy are transformed to make electricity and how important it is to be safe around electricity.

Students were actively engaged in our drama activities. The students devised, performed and responded to documentary drama through re-enacting a scene from a natural disaster by using images, photos and videos.

Students have demonstrated an understanding of the importance of leadership, independence and respect for life-long learning.

Extra Curricular Activities Weaving used to be a leisurely pastime of coastal village women in the east coast states of Peninsular Malaysia during the rainy months. Weaving is usually practiced by womenfolk in the rural kampong (countryside) areas.

The numerous items made are both unique and eye-catching. Traditional use of tall, thorny leaves of the pandanus or mengkuang are collected, boiled, dyed and made into colourful gift boxes, mats, beach bags, hats, fans, purses, and slippers. The process requires patience, skill and dedication.

During our Extra Curricular Activities Mrs Bay and Miss Ally taught students to weave bags using recycled appear(newspapers/magazines) to learn about sustainability and caring for our earth.

For students who are new to the English language, we work together to increase our vocabulary, learn the names for lots of everyday activities and things, and practise using them in sentences. Students enjoy a range of activities in the short time we have.

Animal names and prepositions.

Puppet day.

I am very lucky to work with students in all year levels. I enjoy seeing so many of the students who work with me being rewarded for their hard work by their teachers at end of term awards ceremonies. I look forward to another year of challenge and improvement for myself and students next year. Each student is individual and it is great to be able to teach to the needs of the students and to see them flourish. Robyn Frost - ESL & Learning Support Teacher

One of the most interesting activities took place over all of Term 3. Our students worked together with our neighbouring Christian school Emmanual College on a number of community help projects. This was a highly successful ground breaking co-operation activity where our students ventured out into the community and learnt about and helped homeless people, victims of domestic violence, stereotypes, shrinking Aboriginal communities as well as working towards greater harmony

across different religious beliefs. We are proud of our students commitment to this project.

Library and Resource Center Mrs. Z. Mohammed Teacher Librarian The Dewey Decimal Calassification System is the most widely used method for classifying books in libraries. I have been teaching this system to our students to help them understand how libraries are organised and hence, how to locate information quickly and easily. This knowledge will assist students as they enter upper primary / high school, as well as tertiary education

Melvin Dewey - the inventor of the Dewey Decimal classification System, used world wide.

2016 has been an exciting year at AIIC! Construction began on new classroom buildings and our new Library and Resource Centre was officially opened. I started off the year working in the library as AIIC’s Teacher-Librarian. Miss Harris and I began by unpacking resources from our previous library and commenced the on going task of sorting, organising and setting up the new library. After my return from maternity leave, I began taking all classes from Prep to Year 6 for library lessons. Our library lessons are fun and engaging and provide students with vital literacy learning and allows them to practice utilising information and research skills.

Family Fun Night at the Australian International Islamic College FOOD, FIREWORKS AND FUN! On Saturday, 21st May 2016 the Australian International Islamic College hosted another successful Family Fun Night. It all began well before 4pm with teachers and staff frantically organising a fun-filled evening. There were beautiful stage decorations, chilled drinks for those who needed it and warm coffee and tea to drink while we chatted with family and friends. We were very privileged to welcome Peter Russo who represented the Premier. In the kitchen teachers were working hard packing food for the night ahead. Listening to the Nasheed group for entertainment was beautiful and breathtaking. Year 4 teachers took charge of the colouring competition, with some true artistic talent on show. The high school teachers made delicious desserts of custard and jelly. YUM! Badge making, movies and popcorn, glow sticks, bookfair and the spectacular fireworks at the end were enjoyed by all! Our Student Council were terrific managing the night’s activities, welcoming all families and facilitating the quiz and activities. We thank all families of AIIC and the community for the tremendous support received. All monies raised will go towards much needed resources for the students, InshaAllah Mrs Sophia Reed, Mrs Erin Frost, Mr Fahizal Abdullah (Event Coordinators)

14th Annual Qur’an Recitation Competition TWO DAYS OF JOURNEY WITH THE HOLY WORDS.

Australian International Islamic College witnessed another successful annual Qur’an recitation competition held over two days. While primary classes from preparatory to year 6 had their reading sessions on Tuesday, the 26th of April, the secondary students from year 7 to year 10 had their sessions completed on Wednesday, the 27th of April. Apart from the students and teachers, The program was attended and enjoyed by the parents and members from the wider school community. The program highlighted the unending spirit and motivation of our students in learning the holy words in its ancient aesthetics and in lining up with the traditional recitation practices of the Ummah. The students have been practicing enthusiastically for the competition right from the beginning of this term as Imams have already informed them in the first term to prepare a portion or surah from the Noble Qur’an. Almost all the participants turned up to read the chapters from the glorious book of Allah with full courage and enthusiasm. The College also witnessed well-behaved audience who really enjoyed every verse recited by their fellow participants. Both primary and secondary students followed the guidelines and instructions of their teachers and the master of ceremony. During the competition, each student was judged on the basis of tajweed, fluency and memorization by famous scholars and highly skilled Imams around the Brisbane region. AIIC had the privilege of having Moulana Hafiz Aslam Qadiri (Imam of Algester community), Mufti Naeem ( Imam of Darra masjid) and Hafiz Yakub from Algester society to judge the performance of the students. Participants, parents and Imams equally appreciated the service of the judges. In his advice to the students, Moulana Hafiz Aslam who had attended many previous competitions observed that the students at the college have consistently made significant progress in their Qur’an reading skill. He noted that united efforts of students, parents, Imams, teachers and college management are clearly evident in the quality of recitation by the students. AIIC is so proud of its’ students’ talents and achievements in all fields and in the Qur’an reading and learnings in particular. Excellence in every area is the motto of the College and all its values and principles are found and nourished from the roots of the noble Qur’an. We strive to pass the light of the divine words to our students through various possible ways and we try to inculcate the love for the holy Qur’an and Deen in the budding generation through similar programs in order for them to accept this ‘Ilahi’ message whole heartedly. Imam Mohammed Sharif Madathil Islamic and Arabic Studies Coordinator.

Year 7A consists of excellent group of students, who are keen to learn, very well behaved and well mannered. As their form teacher I am tremendously proud of them – Habibun Nahar

Year 7A

Let’s look at our important events throughout the year!

7A extracurricular fun time was story telling time! We have two excellent story telling student in the class who can instantly take out one story from their bag. Right: The story tellers! Najma Shariff and Sakina Kiza.

7A Student leaders- Halima Noor and Safi Alam.

Year 2016 by Halima Noor This year has been an exceptional year. Throughout this year we had so much fun! All thanks to our wonderful teachers, not to mention the hard work and the determination all the students have put into their studies and the ongoing events we had throughout this year. During this wonderful journey we have learned variety of contents, which Science, Math, English, Geography, History, Islamic Studies, ICT, Civics, Arabic and last but not least, Quran. We also experienced a variety of events, such as Harmony Day, Science Day, Drama Day and many excursions throughout the year. Halima Noor -

Here is Sakina’s view of story tellingStory telling is one of the most enjoyable activities that an individual can undertake. Story telling allows a person’s imagination to expand and brings forth a new skill which helps many aspects of the mind. Everyone loves to tell stories as they are exciting and full of adventures. Most stories have a moral to them and such morals helps people improve in their behaviour. Without storytelling we would not know a lot about certain things and issues that exist today. I enjoy telling stories to the class because it boosts my confidence from low to high. Why I love storytelling so much is because there is never a right or wrong.

7A went on their Geography Excursion. Here is Khadiza Akter’s writing about the excursion: Our excursion in semester 1 was simply a blast! On the 21st of June, 7A along with 7B departed on a trip to Forest Lake, mostly because of educational needs but that didn’t stop anyone from having fun! We were required to rate the state of the local town, from the environment to education, as it was a task given by the teachers. We stopped at different stations to admire and compare their current state to other villages. On our last destination, we stopped by the local park, it was a spectacular view! There was a playground, and a lake, not to forget the little ducks hanging around. We did our final adjustments to our assessment and had the rest of the day to ourselves, exploring the forever to be mysteries. No, not really we just chatted the day away talking about our forever unique adventures.

7A won the Science day competition. They had several activities: Bristlebot, Robot boat and personal Hygiene. Students enjoyed making robot and growing bacteria on Petri dishes. Here are some snapshots from the events.

7B in 2016

7B have had a very busy and successful year in 2016. It was a big change for the students moving from primary school to high school but they handled the challenge with gusto. Many students returned to AIIC to continue their secondary studies while we also welcomed students from other schools. Regardless of where we come from, we worked together to achieve our best. The students studied a number of different subjects over the course of the school year, all of which helped them to build their knowledge and understanding of their world and their place in it. It wasn’t all work during the year though; Year 7 students also participated in a range of activities during the year, including Science Day, Drama Day and a Geography excursion to Forest Lake. They all enjoyed competing in the school’s Sports Day and the Cross Country events, as well as weekly extra-curricular afternoons. The dedication and effort that the Year 7s have put in have helped them to achieve great things over the course of the year, and we wish them all the best for their Year 8 studies in 2017. Assalamualikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu As Chemistry and Biology teacher, I enjoyed catching up with all of you in Chemistry and Biology classrooms and wet laboratory.

REPORT FROM DR ISLAM

Our Science Department is aiming at Australian International Islamic College (AIIC) is to develop our students’ understanding of themselves as ‘learners’. All students have the opportunity to learn in the context of their school, families and community. In Chemistry and Biology, our students broaden their learning about the world through connecting with modern science and technologies, natural materials and environments. In line with the outcomes of the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) learning and development framework, it is our endeavour to foster curiosity, cooperation, confidence, creativity, commitment, enthusiasm, persistence, imagination and flexibility through a variety of learning opportunities for our science students. AIIC offers a wonderful variety of learning experiences in local, national and international settings. As an academic institution we deeply value intellectual and scholastic pursuits and recognise our role, in partnership with parents and the community, in assisting our students to develop habits that will enable them to continue their pursuit of knowledge and learning throughout their lives. I am proud to say that our graduates are pursuing their under graduate studies in University of Queensland (UQ), Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and Griffith University. It is a tremendous privilege to observe AIIC graduates pursue opportunities to grow, learn, flourish and succeed in a diverse range of endeavours throughout the world. QCS TEST @ AIIC What is tested — Common Curriculum Elements (CCEs) The QCS Test does not test particular knowledge of specific Year 12 subjects. It tests the Common Curriculum Elements (CCEs), a set of generic skills identified in the Queensland senior curriculum. The test assumes that candidates have basic levels of general knowledge and vocabulary and a Year 10 knowledge of mathematical operations. Format of the test The QCS Test consists of 4 papers — a writing task (of 600 words), a short response paper and two multiple choice papers. The results achieved for each of the 4 test papers are combined into one grade, ranging from A (the highest grade) to E (the lowest). Those sitting the test are asked to respond to a variety of stimulus materials, such as prose passages, poetry, graphs, tables, maps, mathematical and scientific data, cartoons and artistic works.

In 2016 the Australian International Islamic College (AIIC) embraced the ‘Technology’ in STEM, in particular autonomous technology, with the National Science Week school theme Drones, Droids and Robots. All years 2 to year 12 had the opportunity to participate in the Science Day exhibition. It was very exciting to see groups of students from each class perform very well and share their experiences with fellow students, parents and teachers.

SCIENCE DAY 2016

As a school community, we are dedicated to celebrating achievement, character, creativity, improvement and effort across a vast range of science activities, believing that every boy and girl can achieve success and benefit from a broad and liberal education. Finally, I would like to thank Delese Brewster, Senior Projects Officer, of the Australian Science Teachers’ Association (ASTA) for accepting our application for a grant which helped us to make our Science day successful. Please take a look at some photos of different activities during Science day (17th August 2016) which are also available in our College website. Regards, Dr Mohammad Islam Science Day Coordinator

Year 6B Project The organic battery experiment: As part of their class entry for the Science Day exhibition, a group of Year 6B students embarked on a science experiment to find out which fruit or vegetable produces the strongest electric current. Based on the assumption that the sourer the citrus fruit is, the stronger the electric current produced by the citric acid, they decided on the hypothesis that lemons produce the strongest electric current. Using the Scientific Method, they experimented on various fruits and vegetables using galvanized nails and copper pipes for electrodes, and insulated wires connected to a multi-meter. Much to their surprise, after testing lemons, apples, potatoes and grapefruits, they discovered that potatoes produced the strongest electric current. After some research, they found out that this is due to the presence of phosphoric acid in potatoes which is a stronger conductor of electricity than citric acid found in lemons. Despite their wrong hypothesis, the students learnt that they could apply the same procedures using scientific methods to other experiments in the future. This was new learning to the students took away with them from the experiement.

Year 3A Project Would there be the internet without Science? Students of Year 3 got involved in exploring and investigating different sources to find out how the internet works and what is involved in the working of the internet? Does it involve Science? What is this amazing magic? Is it Science or Technology? After investigating many sources, students were able to build their understanding of the things that are involved in the working of the internet. To develop a clear understanding of the topic, which is so crucial in the world of today and without which students can’t imagine their lives, students from 3A began their research and investigation. They were engaged in building a project on how the internet works and with that found many answers to their above questions. The project was then presented on the Science Day held on 17th August 2016 Internet involves: 1. Electricity and magnetism (physics of computers) 2. Electromagnetic waves (physics of communications) 3. Energy and power (physics of data centres)

Year 7A Project

Build a walking robot and a robotic boat Year 7A mainly focused on the robotics for their Science day as the theme was Drones, Droids and Robots.

The internet at one level is a physical thing. It is made of a collection of servers, clients, routers, switches, and the like, all of which are typically metal and plastic boxes full of electronic components. Within these boxes, of course, you have the physics of semiconductors, power supplies, etc. These boxes are connected to each other by physical things also: metallic wires, glass and plastic fibre-optics, radio waves, microwaves.

There you have the physics of electromagnetics, optics, etc. Let’s not forget satellites, they’re in there too! So we have the physics of orbits and relativity. There are trillions of physical components to the internet and they are each made of high-tech materials using modern science. So the literal answer to your question is that nearly every sub-field of modern physics, except perhaps the most theoretical, are involved in making the internet work.

From the desk of Ms Azhari

Experience more than anything else is the greatest teacher of all. Through experience we learn about ourselves and what we are capable of. Language and the way we use it, is the means of developing a sense of self. By reading about other people, places and times we experience wisdom lived and lost. Through reading, we travel through time and space and are often transported to worlds beyond our imagination. What we read and how we write say so much about who we were, who we are and most of all who we’d like to become. Insha Allah, if nothing else students who have studied English at AIIC and those who continue to do so will find that no matter the experiences they’ve had in the past – whether painful or joyous – we come away with knowledge. One example of this is the experience the students had in participating in our Drama Day events. Drama Day at AIIC is an annual event celebrating the spoken and creative skills of our students. We all get nervous before going on stage, some of us stutter, giggle or even forget our lines but the show goes on and we learn from our experiences. We can see that over the years, students who have previously participated in Drama Day perform so much better the next time they get up on stage – why? The simple answer is that experience has taught us to do better, to be better and to strive to put the best of ourselves forward. As the year wraps up, we reflect on the experiences of our time at AIIC. For the graduating class of 2016, I wish you all the very best in the years ahead. I have taught English to many of you since Year 8 and Masha Allah, it has been an unforgettable journey. The experiences we’ve shared, Insha Allah, have taught us so much more than was obvious in the moment and as we look back at them fondly in the days ahead may we continue to learn from them and apply the lessons they have imparted into the future.

We should all take time to remember our moments - the funny, the sad, the embarrassing, the frustrating, the good, the bad, the ugly, the beautiful, the memorable and the totally forgettable. These are the moments we collect, the wisdom we live and the experiences which teach us to be the best we can be as we step forth into the wide world that awaits us. So dear students, keep reading, keep writing and keep appreciating these moments of experience. Who knows just what they may teach you when you least expect it.

ICT /IPT REPORT BY MR CHRISTOPHER CRANE Asalammu Alaikum Warahmatuullahi Wabarakathu This year at AIIC we have been striving to gain better computer literacy skills for our students. This will help students who continue onto doing Information Processing Technology (IPT) as an elective in Year 11-12. In upper primary this year we completed our design unit creating a brochure of the school with students who submitted work showing great competence in this area. We then moved into collecting data and showing data in Excel and finished off the year learning about the hardware needed for using computers as well as creating a blog journal and designing an app. The Year 4 class commenced IT classes with me in semester 2 where we looked at basic algorithms and cyber safety using the Budd:e web program as well as quizzes created at the Office of Children e-safety Commission. In the lower high school computer literacy levels have drastically improved but we still have a long road ahead of us. This year in Information Communication Technology (ICT) we designed logos in a portfolio for various business types. We then undertook a research and data collection task where was pleasing to see that a number of students were improving from their first term with me as ICT teacher. We then moved to creating films using a format of an online film competition creating short films to spread diversity. This had a number of groups showing keen interest and skills in designing, creating and editing a short film. We are finishing up our lower secondary year exploring elements of hardware and software and looking at using algorithms to plan and design a webpage using HTML. Our middle secondary students are improving their understanding of ICT concepts with a strong start to their year using Photoshop to design posters for events that were taking place in Brisbane at the start of the year. Students were not strong in evaluation skills at the beginning of the year but have significantly improved throughout. Students then went onto working on projects designing a podcast or a short film using the schools iPads and some new apps added to the iPads. In semester 2 the students worked on learning advanced concepts of hardware and used conceptual schema diagrams to design a database which is needed for undertaking IPT in future. For their final term we are looking at how a database is created, as well as learning and using Structured Query Language (SQL) to create queries in tables using access and W3 Schools as preparation for students extending their study into IPT. This year in IPT we have strived to improve our IPT program with the addition of new textbooks for our students as well as the addition of programs installed on our computers at the suggestion of teachers from other schools in our community. This year we have been looking at data basing with access, use of query by example QBE and SQL as well as looking at various algorithms for design such as Data Flow Diagrams, and Nassi Schniderman algorithms which we have used in class when we have been designing code in the program notepad++ which is new to our school. We used these algorithms on Science Day data flow algorithms were used for the creation of quizzes for staff and students as well as a plan of instructions given to students whereby they were used to operate a robot. For the Year 12 students I wish you the best in your endeavours in the future and I hope to see more improvements in ICT at AIIC in the future. It has been a pleasure to be working within the Muslim community and I have gained a lot of knowledge of Islam whilst working at AIIC in 2016 Christopher Crane - Teacher INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY (ICT) INFORMATION PROCESSING TECHNOLOGY(IPT)

Year 9 Science Field Trip Oxley Creek Ecosystems 8 September 2016 On a science field trip to Greenwood Lakes and Oxley Creek, students used scientific techniques to study local environments and ecosystems. They carried out a series of indicator tests (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, salinity/ conductivity, turbidity, phosphates and nitrates) to assess water quality. They also assessed possible impacts on the health of the waterway. They also recommended management strategies to effectively manage the creek ensuring the health of the creek improves and can be maintained in the future. Special thanks to Ms Karen Toms from Oxley Creek Catchment Association for making the trip fun and exciting! Shahra Byrne - Maths, Biology Australian International Islamic College - 2016 Yearbook

Extra-curricular Activity“Badminton with Mrs. Byrne” "Badminton is one of the extracurricular activities offered by AIIC to provide a positive learning environment where the students feel comfortable regardless of their ability. The majority of students in this sport have minimal experience in playing badminton. Through making our activities fun, students at all year levels (7-10) felt comfortable and increase their badminton skills. Students are encouraged to take their new skills and love for physical activity to play either at a competitive or a recreational level." Kind regards Shahra Byrne

AUSTRALIAN INTERNATIONAL ISLAMIC COLLEGE’S 14TH ANNUAL COLLEGE FETE The sun shone and stall holders set up early for the expected crowds, for Sunday 28 August marked the annual AIIC fete. It was great to welcome family, friends and neighbours to our C6ollege. Throughout the day people arrived and enjoyed the formal welcome program, shopping, rides, games and food on offer. The College’s Nasheed group commenced the program with the national anthem followed by addresses from Councillor Steve Griffiths and Sgt Jim Bellos. Also saying a few words was the founder of the college Imam Abdul Quddoos Azhari and College Principal Mariam Banwa. The Student Council from both Primary and High School organised a games stall while teachers had their own stalls. There was something for everyone and when the fun of the fete and the heat of the day became too much, people supported food vendors and sat in the shade of the large marquee. The end of a successful day went off with a big bang namely the firework display. The support from the community was immense, the day was exhausting but very enjoyable and rewarding. We will be back next year and we would to thank all our sponsors and the community for their continued support. Ursula Muncaster
