E

very journey begins with one step. For those who dream of pursuing graduate study at AIIAS, that first step can be both exciting and anxious. The first step must be followed by a second step, and each successive step must be deliberate, sturdy, and determined.

The carabao, the national animal of the Philippines, symbolizes the strength, patience, and perseverance every student at AIIAS must exhibit to attain their educational goals. The carabao is not swift, but it is steady. One step and then another. It does not give up when the field is hard or the load is heavy. Instead, it persists with quiet determination.

And eventually, the job is done.

This issue of the Flags Magazine takes you on a journey to AIIAS. What does it take to get in and get started? It doesn’t need to be a mystery! Meet Malachi, the AIIAS Carabao, who will guide you through the process in this issue.

Join Malachi as he takes you to the various people who will assist you on the journey. The map on pages 4&5 provides the big picture view of the journey: admissions, arrival, registration, and settling in. Each is a milestone along the way. Admissions is the first stop,

requiring diligence and careful preparation of documents. Arrival is the next step, marked by air tickets, the bittersweet farewell at the airport, immigration, disembarking in Manila with new sights and sounds, traveling to the campus, and walking into your new home for the first time. Registration follows, a step that sets your academic direction and defines your goals.

Finally, settling in brings the challenge of finding balance between the excitement of everything new, the waves of homesickness, the challenge of studying in a different culture, the task of making a home, forming friendships, and embracing the diverse community of AIIAS. Be encouraged as you meet three students who faced impossible obstacles and experienced God’s miracles and provisions.

The journey may not be quick or easy, but like Malachi the carabao, those who walk with resilience and faith will eventually reap the harvest: not only a degree, but growth, friendships, a heart for mission, and a calling that is immeasurably deepened for service. God needs you, prepared for a greater vision and broader service. Take that first step!

Hi! My name is Malachi.

Our mascot for Flags 2025 is the carabao or water buffalo. The Carabao is a well-loved animal. Some even refer to it as the “Filipino farmers’ best friend”. Common in the Philippines and throughout southeast Asia, the carabao is used extensively in farming. Docile and gentle, the carabao is known for its physical strength and power, perseverance, and hard work. It is resilient in the face of hardships and challenges.

The Journey to AIIAS As soon as you enter the AIIAS gate, directly in front is the iconic bell tower.

The symbolic structure depicts the alpha and omega, the beginning and the end. A reminder to students of the welcome they received as they began their studies, as well as the many farewells said as everyone gathers at the bell tower to bid the departing family farewell with hugs and a prayer. More importantly, the bell tower is a symbol that AIIAS is all about God. God is at

the center of everything at AIIAS. His presence wraps the campus in His love, joy, and peace. As we worship, study, and do life together, the bell tower reminds us to make God our Alpha and Omega. hinese philosopher Lao Tzu once said, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.” As chaplain at AIIAS, I’m privileged each semester to welcome new students and hear the remarkable stories of how God led them here—stories marked by faith, perseverance, and divine providence.

That first step toward AIIAS is often taken in faith. Whether you are a student, faculty member, staff, or administrator, coming to AIIAS usually means stepping into the unknown—leaving behind the familiar, and trusting God with what’s ahead.

The road to AIIAS is rarely straightforward. From the first inquiry about graduate programs to the maze of applications, visa processes (for international students), financial challenges, and sometimes even the hurdle of passing an English language class before enrollment— it’s a journey often marked by uncertainty. Yet it’s also a journey of hope. It’s in those moments of doubt and delay that many discover something deeper: this journey is

not just about earning a degree—it’s about growing in Christ, finishing strong, and being shaped for service.

Along the way, you’ll encounter a team of people who are here to walk with you—long before you set foot on campus and every day thereafter. The Admissions Office, Chaplain’s Office, AIIAS Housing, Registrar, Finance Office, Program Directors, and the Student Association Council are more than names at the bottom of emails. They are real people with real hearts, praying for you and committed to your success.

Meet Jen: Your first steps on your journey to AIIAS

O

ne small click could start your journey to AIIAS. It depends, of course, on who makes that click. If it is Jen, the warm and detail-oriented soul in the Admissions Office, your journey has really begun. Jen is dedicated to ensuring that your dreams don’t get lost in the paperwork. She processes your application from start to finish. From checking documents to answering anxious emails, she’s the reason the process will feel less daunting and more like a journey guided by a trusted coach supporting you every step of the way.

Jennifer Faith Princesa-Valenia, commonly known as Jen, is a soft-spoken, friendly woman.

As many students can attest, she is compassionate, caring, and willing to go out of her way to help others.

Jen joined the Admissions team in January 2023. Her journey, guided

by God's plan, has equipped her to excel as the Assistant for Admissions and Records in the Academic Office.

Her background includes teaching, studying in a foreign country, working in customer service, marketing, and counseling psychology.

Visit her office, and you'll always find her busy. She loves her work and finds it richly rewarding. As she says, “I enjoy helping prospective students. When a student is finally accepted into the program at AIIAS, I feel relief and joy.” She looks forward to meeting each student in person. After months of regular email contact, it feels like she knows

each personally and is meeting a friend when they arrive.

Many prospective students face real obstacles such as paying initial fees, meeting English proficiency requirements, or obtaining transcripts from their previous universities. Jen empathizes with their struggles, having studied in a foreign country herself. While she is committed to making the admissions process as smooth as possible for each applicant, it is a process which must be completed in full.

Unfortunately, some students are so eager to start studying that they ask to come to AIIAS before meeting all the requirements. “It’s hard to say “no!” but sometimes I must. It is a process. I pray before informing them. When they insist, I do my best to respond with humility. I can’t give in to their requests, but I can always be humble and reply politely and kindly.”

Like any job, there are challenges. There are days with more than 200 emails to answer. This task can become overwhelming and cause anxiety. When the workload becomes too heavy, Jen turns to God. “I pray because I know I can't accomplish everything with just my ability. Some days, I really need to pray. When I have completed my tasks for the day, I know God has helped me.”

Unkind emails are another challenge. People aren’t always happy when asked to follow procedures. She has learned not to take it personally. Instead, she tries to stay positive and view such emails as constructive feedback, with nuggets of truth from which she can learn how to improve.

With numerous emails, tight deadlines, frequent interruptions, and students needing help, her work can be stressful. To unwind,

Jen likes to get out. On gym nights, she plays volleyball or badminton.

Other times, she enjoys a drive in the countryside, often ending up at her favorite cozy restaurant with a nature-inspired ambiance. She loves adventure, and whenever there’s an opportunity, she is sure to join in the fun.

Every AIIAS story begins with a dream, but it’s people like Jen who make that dream seem possible.

Her kindness, humility, and unwavering faith shine through her work, reminding us that Admissions isn’t just about the paperwork—it’s about people and their dreams.

With every email sent and every obstacle overcome, she offers more than guidance; she provides care, encouragement, and quiet prayers.

For Jen, admission is more than a process; it’s a ministry of helping students take their first step toward God’s calling. Persistence & Miracles

he excitement of being accepted to study at AIIAS comes with the bittersweet challenge of change. Change is never easy; it is rarely comfortable and can be challenging. Relocating to a new country brings with it a mix of excitement, uncertainty, and inevitable persistent fears. All the “what if?” thoughts that keep one awake at night. Student Services is here to help you negotiate all the “what if?” questions and put your mind at ease. They endeavor to make your transition to AIIAS as smooth and hassle-free as possible.

Most students have very few “relocating” challenges. Nevertheless, we asked Chelou Completado, the Student Services administrative assistant, to share her most challenging relocation story. In the last few years, there was one very challenging relocation which came to mind. Doreen and Chisomo’s story is a testimony to God’s providence and the perseverance of the Student Services Office.

Doreen and Chisomo are both students from Malawi. They joined the PhD in Business extension program hosted at University of East Africa in Baraton, Kenya. After

completing their coursework and passing their comprehensive exams, it was time to focus on the dissertation. Students were required at that point in the program to come to the AIIAS campus to complete their writing. The benefits of being on campus would include the well-equipped library, face-to-face consultations with their supervisor, and the atmosphere on campus with no distractions or interruptions. The Student Service Office helped them process the necessary documents. Arrangements were made for their respective accommodations. Travel documents were secured, invitation letters sent, and numerous documents were issued to verify their acceptance as students at AIIAS. AIIAS was ready to warmly welcome them.

Back in Malawi, Doreen and Chisomo were excitedly finalizing everything to depart and saying their farewells. They would be gone for a year or more. It was a bittersweet farewell, as they would go without their spouses and children.

weary travelers were very happy to touch down in Manila. All that stood between them and a warm shower and a cozy bed was the border control point and the drive to AIIAS. Alas, instead of “Welcome to the Philippines”, the immigration officer was not helpful. First fault was found with one thing, then another, and finally “Entry Denied.”

Our two students, now devastated, and weary had to head back to the boarding gate for the same flight that had brought them to Manila.

At the airport, the AIIAS driver was anxiously waiting and wondering, “Where are the students?”. The last passengers had already exited when he received a phone call from Chisomo: “We have been denied entry”. He could do nothing but return to the campus. Meanwhile, back on campus, the Student Services Department along, with the Dean of the Graduate School and the Admissions department, was anxiously trying to find a solution. Phone calls were placed to Immigration at the airport. They double-checked that all the documents were in order, but to no avail; the two students had been black-

listed and were sent back to Malawi.

Chisomo continues the story: “While we were devastated and almost gave up, the dean and faculty in the graduate school encouraged us to keep working on our dissertations and offered their help in any way they could from afar. And they truly helped. Eventually, by the grace of God, the blacklisting was lifted. AIIAS, through its frontline departments, including student services, worked tirelessly until we were cleared to return to the Philippines. Different student groups and communities—the African students, the SID, and other prayer groups— faithfully prayed for our return, and God answered those prayers.”

For Doreen and Chisomo, coming to study at AIIAS tested the heart as much as the mind. Within every challenge lies a path to deeper growth and dependence on God. They can attest that God is a miracle-working God who understands and cares. They are forever grateful to the Student Services Department (including the AIIAS immigration team) and the Graduate School, which looked beyond the stamp “Entry Denied” and went the extra mile so they could complete their studies.

ou’ve applied, arrived, and finally registered for your classes. Now what? The campus seems big, and you feel just that little bit lost; alone amongst strangers. You know the feeling. We’ve all had to face a new place, new people, and a new journey, and then reality strikes, “I am the stranger!” At AIIAS, you are not alone as you embark on your graduate study journey. There are supports designed to help new students.

The Student Services Department will ask you to attend the new student orientation and campus tour to help you find your way around and know what to expect. Many of your questions will be answered at this event, and you’ll hear tips for surviving the transition successfully.

Both the Theological Seminary and Graduate School have staff members to assist you as you settle into your routine and study rhythm.

The assistants are there to help you in your academic journey. As Education department resource assistant Ronelda (“Rhoda”) Ejercitado shares, “I want the students to feel that we are here to help them anytime, anywhere, with whatever assistance we can give, so that their life will be easy in their journey as an education student. I also pray for them.”

Karole Mercado is the Administrative Assistant to the Seminary Dean, and Melchie Modillas is the Administrative Assistant to the Graduate School Dean. They will help you with registration and enrollment at the start of the semester. They also coordinate communication between students and professors and distribute important information to students.

If you have questions about course changes or need help with administrative issues, you can always approach them and find help. The

administrative assistants serve as your connection to the Seminary or Graduate School administration.

If you need extra help with issues related to your study program, you can contact the Department Resource Assistant.

This person is your go-to when you are unsure who to ask. She is responsible for welcoming you, introducing you to your academic advisor, and showing you where to find various documents related to the curriculum, courses, academic activities for the semester, and the class schedule.

At AIIAS, we have four Department Resource Assistants supporting the departments. IIAS is more than a graduate school—it is a global family. Our campus thrives with ten vibrant communities: AIIAS South Asia Community (ASAC), South Pacific Division (SPD), European, Latino, Filipino, Chinese, Korean, African, Myanmar, and Indonesian. Each brings unique cultures, traditions, and stories that enrich campus life.

More than hosting potlucks, concerts, or cultural nights, these communities play a vital role in welcoming and supporting new students. Support can be as simple as meeting someone at the airport, assisting with local grocery shopping, or guiding them to affordable furniture stores. It could involve inviting them to Sabbath lunch, introducing them to church and campus activities, or simply checking on their adaptation. These small gestures transform strangers into friends and foster a sense of home from the very first day.

When each community commits to offering a welcoming hand and a listening ear, we foster more than a multicultural campus—we build a family. As Scripture reminds us, “Do not forget to show hospitality to strangers, for by so doing some people have shown hospitality to angels without knowing it” (Hebrews 13:2).

“When the Father Opens Doors!”

I

never imagined I would study at AIIAS. In August 2023, I traveled from Trichy, my hometown in Tamil Nadu in the southern part of India, to the Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS) in the Philippines. I came for my master’s in religious studies, focusing on Biblical Studies - Old Testament. But getting here was not easy; it took nothing short of a miracle.

Although I had completed my bachelor’s degree at Spicer Adventist University in May 2023, I was told that I would only receive my official documents in December 2023. This created a big problem: AIIAS classes started in August 2023. My heart sank. This seemed like a closed door. I prayed, but honestly, I VOLUME 20 • NUMBER 1

didn’t have much faith. Strangely, it was my parents who continued to believe. My dad was recovering from spinal surgery and was still very sick. I worried about the money, the tickets, the fees, and so many other things. I told my dad, “Maybe I should just study at Spicer again”.

My parents wouldn’t give up. While I only saw obstacles, they saw God’s hand. My father somehow sent $1,000 for my admission, but AIIAS said they never received it. Another obstacle for me to worry about. By late July, I was sure it was over. Yet my father, still recovering from surgery, did something shocking. He booked our tickets to the Philippines anyway! I was confused and scared. “Why, Pappa?” I asked. “We don’t even have acceptance yet!” My dad told me to wait for miracles to happen and I would to see God turn the tables. Just one day before our flight, the impossible happened—my application was accepted! I don’t know what prayers my parents whispered to God, but Heaven’s doors burst open. My sick father traveled with me, and on that journey, I realized something: Jesus was carrying me through my parents’ faith when mine was weak.

AIIAS was more challenging than I imagined. Research papers, scholarly arguments, it was overwhelming and made me feel so lost, so I’d pray, “Lord, if You don’t write this paper, I’m going home!”

And you know what? He helped me write my papers.

He provided scholarships and found ways for me to cover my other expenses. I was blessed by the “God’s Food Basket” ministry, which gave me groceries and vegetables.

God was truly amazing! He opened doors for me to take on leadership roles, present my research, and travel to share my message. In my moments of loneliness and desperation, I saw God’s presence in my life.

Now I understand! When God calls you, He makes a way. That’s why Romans 8:35-39 is my lifeline—nothing can separate us from His love. My journey to AIIAS wasn’t perfect, but it was soaked in grace. To anyone waiting on a miracle, don’t just look at closed doors.

Look for the Father running to open them.

God’s Faithfulness Through My AIIAS Journey: Lessons of Perseverance Learnt

n October 16, 2023, I submitted my application for the PhD in Religion (New Testament) program at AIIAS as part of the requirements for the General Conference scholarship, for which I had been selected.

This step gave me a glimpse of my long-cherished dream of studying at AIIAS coming true. When the acceptance letter finally arrived on February 29, 2024, my heart was filled with joy. Yet, the process was not complete. A sponsorship authorization letter from my Division was required before I could begin my study at AIIAS. Despite tireless efforts from my sending Institution and Division, the letter was delayed, and

my dream seemed uncertain. My program started on August 5, 2024, while I was still in my country with no assurance of financial support.

By faith, and with the help of my institution, my family and I arrived on the AIIAS campus on August 21, 2024, holding onto hope. From August to October, while waiting for the letter, we endured a very challenging financial situation, surviving on savings, the generosity of family and friends, and an advance from the AIIAS Finance Department.

Finally, in October, the Division sent the long-awaited letter, and God opened the way for support for my study and family.

Through it all, God’s faithfulness shone brightly. The Administration of my sending institution and Division did their part diligently.

The AIIAS Administration guided and supported us with consistent communication. Faculty and staff prayed with us, while the AIIAS African community—especially Pastor Sellu and his wife—showed love in

y name is Dmitrii Zubkov. At the end of 2022, my family was given the opportunity to study at AIIAS in the Philippines. To take this step, we needed English,but at that time, we knew almost nothing. Still, we didn’t want to let the chance slip away. So we came to AIIAS and began our journey at the English Center. I am especially grateful to the teachers who guided us patiently, even explaining the simplest things, like the difference between “he” and “she.”

The path was not easy. Learning English turned out to be far more challenging than I expected. I repeated each of the four levels twice, and the third level three times. Yet, I kept going, following my

practical ways. The visit and prayers of Dr. Leonardo Nunes and his wife uplifted us in faith. Above all, my wife’s unwavering support has been my greatest encouragement.

This experience taught me patience, trust, and hope. AIIAS is not only a place of academic excellence but also a community of faith, compassion, and mission.

AIIAS: A Place Where I Encountered Lahai-Roi

raduation! One simple word, yet it carries countless layers of joy. It’s a word that sparks excitement not only in the heart of the graduate but in the hearts of the whole community. It can mean rest after hard work, the sweet taste of victory, a sense of achievement, or simply the relief of completing a degree. For me, it has been both a “desire of the ages” and the first step into the unknown.

The 109th graduation ceremony at AIIAS (May 22-25, 2025) was not just another academic milestone.

For me, and for the other 143 graduates from 31 countries, it was the summit after a long, steep climb. I believe each of us has a story worth telling, a story of how this moment was a long-awaited milestone on the journey of life. For me, it was also the desire of the ages because my family, who had been praying for me faithfully through these seven long years, were able to be physically present to witness this moment, and seeing them in the audience was a living testimony of God’s faithfulness. This was their victory too.

As a self-supporting student and scholarship recipient, my path to this day was like trekking a rugged mountain trail. The climb was slow, the obstacles relentless, and the dissertation, oh, the dissertation was a cliff that tested every last bit of my patience, strength, sanity, and whatever brain cells remained after coursework.

More than once, no, maybe a hundred times, I wanted to stop and go home.

Studying at AIIAS was never part of my plan, not even a dream I dared to dream. I come from a small island on the border between Indonesia and the Philippines, where pursuing a PhD felt like something meant for someone else, someone from a bigger place, with bigger opportunities. But even when I had no plan, God did. Even when I couldn’t see this path for myself, He

was already paving the way. Looking back now, I realize His purpose for me was unfolding long before I could imagine it.

When I arrived at AIIAS in 2018, I was just another new student, no ministry involvement, no clear direction, just trying to find my place. Then one Sabbath afternoon, after a nap that probably lasted longer than it should have, I had a quiet conversation with God. I told Him, “If You brought me here, it must be for more than just earning a degree.” That simple prayer opened unexpected doors, giving me opportunities to serve in ways I never imagined.

Yet even with a willing heart, the path remained difficult. There were days when the thought of going back home, fishing with my dad, surrounded by the comfort of simplicity, seemed far more inviting than the weight of deadlines, expectations, and responsibilities.

I remember one evening vividly: the pressure became too much. I called my parents in tears and told them, “I don’t think I can do this anymore.” After that call, I sat alone on the swing near the AIIAS academy, crying. That swing became the silent witness to my brokenness.

But even in that brokenness, God was present.

In the middle of my sobbing, I heard a quiet voice in my heart: God is with you. You are not alone. I chose to continue, though the struggles would return again and again.

By the end of 2024, I hit my lowest point, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally. I was angry with God. I felt abandoned. My scholarship had ended. I had no job, no income, nothing. I cried out, “What is Your purpose in this? When will I graduate from this school of life that feels never-ending?” Everything seemed to get worse, not better.

And yet, once again, God met me where I was.

AIIAS Seminary Secures Five-Year ATESEA Accreditation A

ccreditation plays a crucial role in ensuring the quality of higher education institutions and their programs. In this context, the Association for Theological Education in Southeast Asia (ATESEA) conducted an accreditation visit to the AIIAS Seminary. The evaluation took place from March 23-26 of this year.

The ATESEA accreditation team comprised four distinguished members: Ms. Christabel Wong, Head Librarian at Seminari Theoloji Malaysia (Malaysia); Dr. Ben Ngaayan, Faculty at St. Andrew's Theological Seminary (Philippines);

Dr. Saw Augurlion, Academic Dean at Myanmar Institute of Theology (Myanmar); and Dr. Jozef Hehanussa, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Theology, Duta Wacana Christian University (Indonesia).

The accreditation team's comprehensive evaluation included meetings with the local accreditation committee, AIIAS administrators, department heads, program directors, students, and alumni. The accreditors also conducted classroom observations before concluding their assessment with an exit report presentation.

he annual AIIAS Preaching Lectureship is a training event intended to bring excellent preachers to help attendees enhance their preaching skills. On January 16-17, 2025, the Applied Theology Department hosted the 10th Lectureship with over 150 participants, including AIIAS seminary students and pastors in Cavite Mission. With the theme, “Preaching Life-Changing Stories,” guest speaker and former AIIAS professor Dr. Jim Park emphasized

The ATESEA accreditation team delivered their exit report with highly positive results, identifying only a few areas for improvement.

Some program areas received zero recommendations for change. This preliminary report grants accreditation to all Seminary programs, including the Doctor in Missiology, which has now received its first accreditation.

As the chair of the Seminary Accreditation Team, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the seminary faculty and institutional leaders who provided support and guidance throughout the sevenmonth preparation process.

The list of commendations and praise for the Seminary and the institution was extensive. ATESEA expressed clear satisfaction with the Seminary's work, and the prepared reports provided substantial evidence supporting the evaluators' positive assessment. AIIAS received the complete list of commendations and recommendations in the ATESEA report sent to the President. The recommendations will be addressed in the coming months.

n May 29-31, 2025, the 18th AIIAS Africa Theological Association’s Annual Theological Forum was held at AIIAS with the theme: “Theology of Wealth and Poverty.”

Given the growing influence of Christianity in Africa and the persistence of poverty, scholars of Africa were called on to reflect on what the good news of the gospel means in the context of wealth and poverty on the continent. Keynote addresses were delivered by Robert Osei-Bonsu, President of the West-Central Africa Division (WAD), and Gordon Doss, World Mission Emeritus Professor from Andrews University. The plenary speakers were AIIAS faculty members Richard Doss, Youssry Guiruis, and Gideon Petersen. Participants were treated

The BRI is currently developing the Seventh-day Adventist International Biblical-Theological Dictionary, a comprehensive reference work that will serve as an invaluable resource for the global church. All Biblical Studies department faculty members have contributed one or more entries to this important project.

eventh-day Adventists are known as students of the Bible. AIIAS and Mountain View College (MVC) students exhibited this expertise at the Bible Languages Cup in Manila on March 17, 2025. Organized by the German Bible Society and the Philippine Bible Society, the event assessed participants' knowledge of Biblical Hebrew and Greek by means of demanding rounds in vocabulary, morphology, and translation. AIIAS students shone.

Ronel Kian S. Cablinda came in second, and Holden Zidreh E. Cadiz placed third among many applicants from different seminaries. Fourth and fifth place went to Gidson Franz T. Clifford and Luzell E. Omadle of MVC, therefore confirming the prominence of the Adventist Church in theological strength. Well done!

AQRA Conference in Bali Unites Global Scholars in Advancing Qualitative Research

T

he 9th International Conference on Qualitative Research, hosted by the Asian Qualitative Research Association (AQRA), convened in Bali, Indonesia. From March 4 to 7, 2025, 48 participants and presenters participated in workshops, panel discussions, and research presentations. The keynote speakers included Dr. Anna Cohen Miller from Nord University in Norway, Dr. Pavel Zubkov from Andrews University in Michigan, and Dr. Evelyn R. Obo from De La Salle University-Dasmariñas in the Philippines, all distinguished qualitative researchers.

Their presentations aligned with the event’s theme, “Empowering Individuals and Community Through Qualitative Research.”

AQRA has members in nearly 400 institutions across 40 countries. It holds particular significance for AIIAS, whose faculty founded AQRA. The research association provides faculty and students with rich opportunities to engage with global experts, exchange knowledge, and strengthen their research skills. Through its ongoing strong leadership role in AQRA, AIIAS remains committed to equipping scholars with the expertise needed to conduct impactful research.

The annual AQRA conferences provide a vital academic platform for scholars addressing emerging research trends in the Asian region and beyond. As AQRA President, Dr. Pavel Zubkov highlighted, “Qualitative research transforms and empowers both researchers and participants. It allows us to touch lives, bring new perspectives, drive action, and create lasting impact.”

On September 28, 2024, a group of Singaporean Christians led by Mr. David Tan visited AIIAS, not knowing that their visit would spark a transformation in the library. Their generous donation has now paved the way for a modern computer lab and a redesigned library website.

On May 22, 2025, the new computer lab was dedicated. It was a meaningful celebration attended

by AIIAS administrators, faculty, staff, and students. A symbolic unveiling of the plaque was led by the AIIAS Administration, commemorating the event. The new library website was also featured, showcasing its fresh design and user-friendly features.

This project represents more than technology and infrastructure— it is an investment in the future of leaders preparing to serve the Lord.

We praise God for this unexpected blessing and invite our community to join us in praying for the continued renewal of our library facilities. May this milestone inspire further growth and excellence in providing worldclass resources and services for God’s mission.

Alumni I Reunion at the General Conference Session

f you thought reunions were just about catching up, think again! On July 6, 2025, the Marriott St. Louis Grand hotel in Missouri turned into a lively ‘playground’ of laughter, hugs, and the kind of chatter that only old friends can really get into. Approximately 150 AIIAS alumni showed up, demonstrating that the bonds formed at the AIIAS are truly lifelong.

The scene was full of smiles as people snapped many, many photos — probably to prove they still look good after all these years — and swapped stories about their adventures since the AIIAS years. Former professors and students shared stories, some funny and some heartwarming, as they fondly reminisced about the good old days. AIIAS president, Dr. Ginger Ketting-Weller, gave an exciting update about how the institution is growing, innovating, and developing leaders. Refreshments fueled the chatter, laughter filled the air, and the best part? Catching up with friends, old and new, over chocolate chips and lemonade.

With so many alumni present, the reunion felt like a global family gathering. Because, honestly, what’s better than catching up with your former classmates (or professors) while taking a break from business meetings, nominating committee sessions, and caucuses?

All in all, the AIIAS alumni reunion in St. Louis was a much-needed dose of faith, friendship, and fun. As these leaders continue to serve around the globe, one thing’s clear: once an AIIASian, always an AIIASian — and forever part of this big, happy family.

AIIAS was founded by the General Conference in the late 1970s to develop and train leaders to serve the world church. Many AIIAS Alumni have gone on to become church leaders in their respective countries and regions, which makes alumni homecomings on the AIIAS Campus difficult to organize. The reunion at the GC Session was a special bonding time. Let’s not wait another 5 years to renew our friendships!

One Family’s Road to AIIAS Academy 24

his is a well-known and oft-repeated sentiment. This is also true for AIIAS Academy. Each international family’s story is different: why they chose to come—or were chosen and sent—to AIIAS, how their transition worked, what challenges they faced, and finally, what their arrival and “settling in” felt like.

Their stories are mostly happy, but often contain some thrills, chills, and miracles. The family to arrive most recently traveled a faith-testing road to AIIAS, and by extension, to the Academy for their two young boys.

Jônatas Ferreira is a doctoral candidate at Andrews University in the latter stages of his PhD program. However, a U.S. immigration officer suddenly canceled the U.S. visas for his family’s passports all at once. This ended the Ferreiras’s access to their program and home at Andrews University.

With the finish line in view, but wife Rebecca cut off from her home, and two young American-born boys needing to move ahead with their education; it was a low time for the family. Pastor Ferreira was now faced with having to close out their lives in the US and seek a place to start over.

The family felt the strain. Fiveyear-old Marc would disappear each morning after getting up and each evening just before bedtime.

His parents found him kneeling on their balcony. They asked him what he was doing. He told them he was asking Jesus to help them return home. Jônatas knew things had to change, soon.

Through some quick encouragement from old friends from

Brazil, and some special arrangements by new friends in the AIIAS administration, the family passed one barrier after another and landed in Manila, making their way to the AIIAS campus just after midnight, August 29. It wasn’t the home young Marc had in mind as he prayed, but the Lord was caring for his little heart. He landed amidst new friends who know what it is like to be uprooted and placed in a different world.

There is compassion among the Academy students. Nearly two-thirds of them are Third Culture Kids. And the teachers have a special kindness for these children who will someday soon take-off again as the family finishes their upgrading and returns to service.

Today, Jônatas says, “I have to look back and think that God did answer Marc’s prayer. Perhaps not precisely as Marc imagined, but He gave him, and us, a safe haven where we could continue our training and preparation for the field.”

Jônatas and Rebecca, Nathan and Marc are quickly settling into life in the tropics. After Marc came home from his first week at AIIAS Academy, Jônatas asked Marc if he was ready to go back home now to the U.S. Marc replied, “No, let’s perhaps stay here another six months.” For a kindergartner, “six months” means a very long time, indeed. And that means he has found his new home.

About AIIAS The Adventist International Institute of Advanced Studies (AIIAS) is a graduate-level Seventh-day Adventist educational institution that offers quality education at affordable rates.

AIIAS provides four modalities: online learning, extension sites, cohorts, and on-campus full-time programs.

AIIAS is located on a beautiful tropical campus 45.5 kilometers outside of Manila, the capital city of the Philippines. This location offers easy access to opportunities for mission trips and community outreach both locally and internationally, especially within the 10/40 Window.
