NEWSLETTER Hope for Orphans Hope for Orphans is an initiative by AIESEC in University of Mauritius supported by Spoon Consulting Ltd. This project is on a 10 weeks duration and started on 18th of November 2011. It aimed at teaching orphans soft skills through different activities and also bring a smile on their face during this end of year festive period.

Among the different activities organized in these orphanages and NGO’s were:• Painting competition • Fun Games • Sport day

The drawings made during these competitions were collected and displayed on the 3rd December 2011 at an exhibition in Quatre Bornes The different Orphanages and NGO’s which par- municipal council. Choose Life NOT Drugs Choose Life NOT Drugs is a 6 week programme run by AIESEC in University of technology of Mauritius having as learning partner, Idriss Goomany and Centre d’Accueil de Terre Rouge. The aim of this project is to address the drug issue in Mauritius by sensitising the youngsters against drugs abuse. This programme started mid December. There are 12 international participants in this program who are going through an intensive training for the first 2 weeks of the project to be prepared to deliver sessions to secondary schools. The target is to sensitise 2000 students against drugs and the sessions will be mainly delivered to the upper secondary students.

NEWSLETTER Global Village On the 17th of December 2011, AIESEC Mauritius held a Global Village at Shoprite to celebrate diversity which is one of our organisation core values. There were stands of more than 15 countries scattered all over the shopping complex showcasing their culture through traditional food, music and costumes. This event also aimed at bringing a festive mood for underprivileged children coming from FraternitÊ Nord Sud and Lakaz A; 2 NGO’s working with children coming from pockets of poverty in the vicinity of Port Louis. A drawing and painting competition was held in the morning followed by lunch. We were happy to bring a smile on the face of the 70 children who participated in this event.

The afternoon agenda consisted of cultural live performances from Mauritians and AIESEC international participants. Despite the bad prevailing weather that day, the crowd was there to watch the performances and enjoy the cultural diversity.

NEWSLETTER Youth against Diabetes Youth against Diabetes is a 6 weeks program by AIESEC in University of Mauritius to sensitise Mauritians against Diabetes. Mauritius is in fact the 4th country where there is a high prevalence of diabetes worldwide which shows a high prevalence of this disease in the country. The main learning partner for this project is Diabetes Parent Support Group an NGO lead by Mrs Rani Balloo. This programme consists of an intensive training of 75 hours on Diabetes to the 17

international participants who are participating in this movement for a better living. The project was launched on the 16th of December and it has for aim to reach out to 1500 Mauritians. Throughout this awareness campaign being run, participation of more than 900 persons has been recorded.

NEWSLETTER Partnership Signed with HSBC and Currimjee

and Currimjee for the year 2011-12, hence supporting AIESEC in its goal of activating youth Leadership in Mauritius.

Since the establishment of AIESEC in Mauritius, there have been few companies who have given their immense support to the organization and who truly believe in the work of young leaders who call themselves “change agent� aiming to change the society by having a positive impact in which ever field they work.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank, both HSBC and Currimjee for believing in us constantly and supporting us throughout the 4 year journey. I hope that this partnership continues for years ahead to come and that we fulfill all the objectives and ambition which we set together for the youth empowerment in Mauritius.

I am very happy to announce that AIESEC Mauritius resigned the partnership with HSBC

Project partnernership with The Circle of Trust In November, Circle Charitable Trust became again partner for AIESEC Mauritius for the next phase of NGO Empowerment project which starts in January. Main objectives are relief of poverty, advancement of education and advancement of human rights. Through this project we will have 20 internationals which will come in Mauritius to work in our partnering NGOs.

NEWSLETTER Closing ceremony of Child empowerment project On 7th of December, AIESEC Mauritius along with Omnicane Foundation held a closing ceremony for the Child empowerment project. This project was an initiative of AIESEC in cooperation with NGOs (Fraternité Nord Sud, APEIM, CEDEM along with the rest) aimed to have a positive impact upon vulnerable children by teaching them life skills, English, mathematics, different sports, music, painting etc. This Project enabled 40 talented International young volunteers to come down from 20 different countries to work

with more than 400 vulnerable children to bring a change in their lives. The ceremony took place at the MITD lecture theatre in the presence of Mr Rajivsingh Ramlugon, Sustainable development coordinator of Omnicane Foundation, Ms Shalini Sinha, representing the CSR Committee, Ms Deepa Kharti, president of AIESEC in Mauritius, representatives of the partnering NGOs of the Project and AIESEC Members from 5 different Universities.

Kenji Athaw, AIESEC Member and Project Manager, said, “A recent survey showed that there are around 19 000 orphans in Mauritius”. He also emphasized on the importance of young Mauritians, contributing to this issue of vulnerable children by taking responsibility to work for the cause. He presented a report on the Project with the impact created on these children focussing on the fact that the children in the NGOs spent an amazing time with the international Volunteers from AIESEC Mauritius. The Children were exposed to a whole new world of possibilities, motivation, new learning experiences by the help of informal teaching via the internationals who made them believe on their dreams and

that they could achieve anything they want in their Lives which became the key output of the Project. Mrs. Shalini Sinha, from CSR committee stated that education is the most valuable thing that can be given to unprivileged children. She also stated that the method which AIESEC young volunteers (local and international) use is an amazing way of informal teaching which has more effect and impact than the formal way of teaching.

International internships promotions AIESEC Mauritius is starting with the recruitment for International internships from the last week of February. The promotion will go until the last week of March. The main focus of this recruitment is to recruit large number of Global Community Development Program Exchange Participants. This time a lot of activities and mini global villages in the universities will be organized to attract the students for the International Internship Opportunities.
