Member Spotlight Tonia and Kent Bell
AIA Las Vegas Allied Members

We Are Proud Members Of The American Institute Of Architects (AIA) Because... There are so many reasons we are AIA members, and it is hard to find just one reason to identify. We find AIA one of the most valuable resources for understanding the needs of the building industry. AIA has allowed us to meet and interact with many talented Architects and many other valuable contacts in the construction industry. We appreciate the effort AIA makes in our community to help transform the building industry and striving always to make it better.

Kent is a registered Mechanical Engineer. With his education in Architectural Engineering, he has a great appreciation for Art and Architecture. Kent has been with Harris Consulting Engineers for 28 years and started as an entry-level designer. He currently serves as President and Principal Mechanical Engineer of Harris Consulting Engineers.

Tonia grew up in the construction trade industry on the east coast with her family. She has spent the last 26 years working in Las Vegas and has had the opportunity to work in many different roles in the construction industry as well as Harris Engineers over the years. Tonia’s diverse background and education in Construction and Environmental Engineering make her a diverse asset for Harris Engineers. It is not uncommon to see her performing commissioning, site visit, office duties, and marketing all on the same day.

What is the most important thing you’ve learned?

Tonia: Integrity. Having Integrity means we are a trusted resource. Problems and issues arise no matter what precautions you take or how many times you go through a set of documents, events, staging, etc. It’s not the problem itself, but how you handle the problem and resolution.

Kent: Teamwork is key to everything. Anything we can accomplish individually is pretty much insignificant to what can be accomplished with the right team, properly prepared and motivated. This was driven home for me in the US Army and is certainly true in our profession daily. Every successful project or endeavor worth mentioning had a team of contributors.

What is your favorite piece of Architecture? Why?

Kent: Taliesin West. I have toured a number of FLW buildings since being fortunate to get a private tour of the Robie House at the ripe age of 13 years old. The integration of the FLW story and philosophy with the desert climate has inspired me since moving to Las Vegas 28 years ago. The use of passive concepts including thermal mass is often overlooked. My early preoccupation with FLW led to my college ambition of an Architecture degree, although I left the University of Kansas with a degree in Architectural Engineering instead. I regret I didn’t stay for the additional semester. I was shy of the B. Arch degree. (FLW – Frank Lloyd Wright)

Tonia: This is an extremely hard question for me to answer. I have a few favorites and I have a slight obsession with Architecture and history. I am fascinated with time periods, locations, and why buildings were built in certain ways in those periods and locations. So, my favorite depends on the time period and sometimes location. One that always is in the front of my mind is Eastern State Penitentiary (ESP), Philadelphia PA. Many modern-day prisons around the world are built based on this architectural approach. ESP Architecture is a test of proven time that has contributed to reforming people and places globally. Every time I visit my homestead, I try to go back to visit ESP and I always find something new to appreciate.

What do you believe needs to be the next area of innovation in our profession?

Tonia: From my Environmental Engineering mind, I believe, especially in Vegas we need to be more innovative with the reuse and renewal of buildings in general. Although we have improved over the years, Vegas is still apt to knock a building and build new over reusing existing buildings. As always, we will need to find innovative ways to deal with water and energy consumption.

Kent: Seamless integration of the design platforms we use must live up to its full potential. Today we have BIM tools that are light years ahead of the best we had available just a few years ago, but the effectiveness of the various discipline tools varies quite a bit. The efficiency and functionality of the engineering platforms lag the same level as the architectural platforms by a version or two. The success of an overall project is dependent on the success of all the corresponding parts.

How do you think the profession will evolve in the next 5-10 years?

Kent: Two items: On a positive note, the continued rapid improvement of BIM technologies in conjunction with the integration of the currently independent calculation and modeling software packages that we currently utilize will increase accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency. On a more concerning note, I fear our profession will continue to evolve to emphasize speed and schedule over accuracy and quality.

Tonia: I agree with Kent, with evolving technology, I fear our profession will succumb to speed schedule and even quantity over quality. With that, I also fear that an appreciation overall for Architecture, Engineering, and Construction will be lacking in the industry. However, I do believe if we can teach the next generation an appreciation of all aspects of our industry, combined with the continued advanced technology, we are going to have amazing buildings in the future.

AIA LAS VEGAS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As I write this month’s letter, I am taking a break while at our 49th Annual AIA Las Vegas Golf Tournament at the Dragon Ridge Golf Course. The weather today for the event was great and the turn out from our members and affiliates is wonderful. As the teams came in from the course, I heard many talk about playing at a different course this year. During lunch we got to celebrate the winners from both the golf and the raffle, which was with our charity partner, The Good Deed Project. Overall, the event was a success, and we are looking forward to next year and celebrating the 50th Annual AIA Las Vegas Golf Tournament.

This month AIA Las Vegas will be presenting the 2023 High School Design Awards, which will take place at Advanced Technologies Academy on Wednesday May 17th from 5:30-7:30pm. Please go to our website for more information and to register as it is a free event, and we would like to have a large showing from our membership to the future generation of architects. Your presence and participation will not only provide valuable insights and encouragement to these young talents, but also contribute to the development of a strong AEC community in Las Vegas.

I want to take this opportunity to thank Kelly Lavigne for her 26 years of service to both AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada. Being a member of the Las Vegas Board of Directors for several years now, I have had the opportunity to work hand in hand with her. Her dedication to our organization has been steadfast and she will be missed. On behalf of the Las Vegas Board of Directors, we wish Kelly much success in her new role at the Nevada Health & Bioscience Corporation (NHBC).

With Kelly’s departure, some of you have already met Taryn Kole who has joined AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada as the new Assistant Director of Operations. Taryn has been busy working with Kelly over the past several weeks in order to have a smooth transition. As more events take place this year, we look forward to introducing the membership to Taryn who is here is assist.

On behalf of AIA Nevada, I am thrilled to congratulate AIAS members and AIA emerging professionals, Michelle Tapia, Assoc. AIA, Tristan Osorio, Assoc. AIA and Ivan Gonzalez-Vazquez, AIAS on a fantastic job testifying on Assembly Bill 241. It's amazing to see the dedication and hard work that they put into their testimony to ensure that every high school student is enrolled in the College & Career Readiness (CCR) diploma track by default. This bill aims to create a more equitable educational landscape for all students, providing them with the necessary tools to succeed in their future careers.

As you may know, Assembly Bill 241 promotes a curriculum focused on developing student potential by challenging critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for success in college, careers, and beyond. It is a powerful step towards a more skilled, diverse, and robust workforce, which is crucial for the progress and development of various industries, including architecture.

My gratitude and admiration go to Michelle, Tristan, and Ivan for their exemplary leadership. Their testimony was outstanding, and it's clear that they all have a deep understanding of the significance of this bill and its potential impact on future generations. It is inspiring to know they will be designing and shaping the future of our communities.

Please join me in congratulating them!

ONE MORE THING...

As many of you know, my last day with AIA Las Vegas will be Friday, April 28th. My first day was in June of 1996. Who knew I"d be here so long? Who knew I'd find such a home here in Las Vegas with you and with the AIA Las Vegas Chapter?

Last night, at my last Membership Meeting as Director of Operations for AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada, I was called up to the microphone and asked to say a few words. A few words is all I could come up with as I was surprised to be called up and unprepared to speak. I believe I said something along the lines of, 'Gosh, I don't know what to say. I'm not going far. I'll still be around. Thank you all very much" and I blew some kisses... Really Kelly?

What I should have said was, It's been an honor to serve the Chapter and the Members for the last 26 years. I have worked hard and carved out my place in the organization. I always tried to do my best to provide great customer service for the Members. I have been able to put those Stage Manager skills to use in ways I could have not imagined. I have experienced great success and failure and learned to live with both. My favorite thing is that I have met amazing people and made some real friends. It is with sadness that I take my leave of working with all of you and at AIA Las Vegas but it is with excitement that I move on to something new. I will miss you and always think back on my time here with great fondness.

I hope that you will welcome Taryn Kole as the Assistant Director of Operations for AIA Las Vegas and AIA Nevada with the same spirit you welcomed me all those years ago. She is smart and very capable and has a good heart. I am confident I am leaving you and the Chapter in good hands.

Thank you again for the love and support over the years. It was a pleasure to serve.

AIA LAS VEGAS AFFRODABLE HOUSING COMMITTEE

Today and for at least the foreseeable future, we are facing a giant national shortage of affordable housing. Though we see a tremendous amount of market rate multifamily rental housing coming online or in construction, the concept that a rising tide lifts all boats does not apply to affordable housing. Without federal, state, and local municipal subsidization, new affordable housing units will not be built; This is the harsh reality.

This year we have lined up a group of guest speakers to provide overviews and success stories. The Affordable Housing Committee is looking to hear first-hand how the architectural community can join in to address the national housing crisis. We have scheduled policy, finance, design, and construction practitioners to inspire and provide areas of opportunities for architects to get involved. The hope is to bring more focus to the Committee and refine our objectives and mission this year.

Eric Novak of Praxis Consulting Group kicked off the year in January with current legislative initiatives and suggestions for the design community to help through the credibility it can bring to advocacy and urge expansion of its professional involvement. A headwind many of us are facing is the dearth in as-of-right residential zoning which translates into a long entitlement process that can push a subsidized project outside of its annual funding commitment window; sadly, funding can go unused, and projects pushed down the road if not cancelled altogether.

In February, Hillary Lopez of the Reno Housing Authority told us about the opportunities that are arising from public housing to bring commercial financing into the fold to fund existing property improvements and encourage new development. Echoing Praxis, more competition with more architects entering the product type would be highly welcome. Advocating for zoning incentives and support of multifamily affordable housing is another key ingredient.

Future speakers will bring examples of executed supportive housing, advise on status of institutional funding, highlight new technologies such as modular offsite fabrication, and continue to give us hope and inspiration. You are all encouraged to call into our next committee meeting and bring us what you are seeing out there that you might want to share in this complex and multi-faceted topic. You may always reach Monica or David directly as well.

AIA LAS VEGAS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE

The committee participated in more events this month with a career fair at the Las Vegas High School March 23, 2023 and a presentation to a class of middle school students at Somerset Academy Stephanie.

I want to thank Cindy Marcos, College and Career Specialist with Las Vegas High School for the invitation to participate in this event. It’s a school wide event and allows the opportunity for over 2,700 students to attend and come by our booth and talk with us about what architecture is what our profession can provide. Stacey Hatfield (NSBAIDRD) and myself shared the table and met with many students that came by. This was the last scheduled career fair for this school year and I want to thank the volunteers that gave of their time and presentation materials for all the help that they provided.

The classroom presentation to students at the Somerset Academy Stephanie, April 12, 2023 was a first for our committee as well as for Somerset. We participated in this with the help of Sandy Miller with the school and met with 7th grade students who take a STEM elective class. It was a group of 12 students who we were able to introduce ourselves and talked with for an hour. The students were interested and asked a lot of questions. I want to thank Stacey Hatfield for partnering with me and sharing the podium during this event.

NEWS 24

The Community Disaster Resilience Zones Act creates and designates resilience zones which identify disadvantage communities that are most at-risk for natural hazards. Communities in the zones will have access to financial, technical, and planning support.

AIA advocated for the law, which President Biden signed late last year. This spring, architects and mayors have the chance to weighin on the designated regions. Learn about the resources for your community and hear from architect Joyce Owens, FAIA, whose projects have put resilience design to the test.

Answer with action.
