I Am A Proud Member Of The American Institute Of Architects (AIA) Because... I believe in the profession and how it can contribute to the betterment of society. It’s also a way I stay connected with my former students who have gone on to great success professionally. AIAs ethical standards and commitment by its members to the profession align with my core values.

I am a tenured associate professor at the UNLV School of Architecture, and current undergraduate Architecture Program coordinator and UNLV Senior Faculty Senator. My background is somewhat unique in that I’m also a licensed professional engineer and practiced structural engineering before studying architecture. My primary teaching area is at the third year level in building structures for architecture students and the design studio, as well as the graduate Integrated Building Systems class. I endeavor to create meaningful and transformative learning experiences that make a lasting impact. It’s an honor to help shape the future life direction for students, and I’m in touch with many former pupils from as far back as 25 years who are now well established professionals with wonderful families. It’s the most rewarding career I could think of. In my spare time I love to play guitar and am running out of wall space for my growing collection of instruments!

What is the most important thing you’ve learned? Be patient, listen and never stop learning. The world keeps on changing and flexibility and adaptability are more important now than ever—one either adapts to changes or you get left behind.

Where will you be in 20 years? Retired, sitting on the front porch of my net-zero home in the shade of the trees of a wooded hillside overlooking the river playing my guitar. Still need to figure out exactly where this place is, though!

What person, living or dead, would you most like to talk with? Carlo Scarpa. Too little considered in this country, he was a singular genius designer. I’d love to sit by his side and have him explain his thoughts and aspirations for any of his masterpiece projects. He was a beacon to me as an architecture student.

How do you think the profession will evolve in the next 5-10 years? Artificial intelligence, machine learning and robotic construction are poised to revolutionize the industry. BIM has allowed us to go from single drawing sheets that all had to be checked and rechecked by hand, to a detailed understanding of assembly as a coordinated unit. We will begin to see more tasks augmented and even automated, and we are already seeing the early stages of robotic construction. The role of the architect will change yet again. While AI may be able to automate many tasks (even generating design ideas), the role of human creativity and critical discrimination will remain key for the foreseeable future.

AIA LAS VEGAS PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As the first quarter of the year has now past, I do hope April starts to bring the spring weather we all are looking for. This month we are looking forward to the 49th Annual AIA Las Vegas Golf Tournament which is scheduled for Monday, April 24th. As a reminder, this year we will be playing at the Dragon Ridge Golf Course. There are still opportunities to sign-up for some sponsorships so please check out the AIA Las Vegas website for the most up to date information.

As I write this letter, we still have a few days left in March which will have concluded with the Women Building Nevada Symposium, Friday March 31st. Look for an update on the event in our future newsletter to come out next month.

As for a status of the AIA Las Vegas chapter, I want to thank the Architects, Associates, and Allied Members that have renewed their memberships. We have been trending above the national average for renewals and collected dues which means our organization is able to provide the continued services and functions for our members. If you know someone that would like to join at one of our membership levels, please have them contact the AIA Las Vegas office.

JAMES HORVATH, AIA

As I conclude for this month, I hope to see everyone out at the golf tournament at the end of the month.

THE FIRST IN THE BI-MONTHLY EPYAF FIRM CRAWL SERIES VISITS TSK ARCHITECTS

This month we kicked off the first event of our bi-monthly Firm Crawl Series. We visited TSK Architects, an international planning and design firm with over 60 years of experience. With a successful turn out, we started the evening off with food, drinks, and networking. In addition to many TSK attendees, we had a mix of architect and designers from other firms, allied members, as well as many UNLV students. The TSK team took our group around their office, showing projects, many wood display models of passed projects that had been made in their design lab, and then finished the evening by presenting three of their current projects with us. We are excited to keep this momentum going as we start planning our next firm crawl, to be held in May at Cuningham Group! Don’t miss these opportunities to learn more about the firms in our area, meet their teams, and network with other likeminded professionals!

In addition to adding 72 patient beds, the new tower also included two floors of shell space for an additional Intensive Care Unit, and Intermediate and Medical Surgical Units. In addition, the hospital added two labor and delivery suites along with 36 mother-baby suites and a 36-bed nursing unit in the tower.

AIA LAS VEGAS EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH COMMITTEE

The committee participated in two more career fairs this month. The first career fair was held March 3, 2023 at Canyon Springs High School. We had a great turnout with many students interacting with our volunteers at the AIA booth. It was a well planned event with over a hundred students coming by our display during the 3-1/2 hours that it lasted. A big thank you to Bianca Lozano for allowing us to attend. I also want to thank Erik Swenseid (Ed Vance and Associates), (Chris Dos Santos, Asawari Pawar, and Jason Huang (Gensler Architects) for their time and engaging discussions with the high school students.

WOMEN IN ARCHITECTURE

On March 8, Members of the AIALV Women in Architecture Committee joined NAWIC #74 [National Association of Women in Construction Las Vegas chapter] Members to celebrate women during WIC Week for a community activity helping Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth [NPHY] organize and categorize donations.

NPHY is a service provider for homeless youth in Southern Nevada. They offer life-changing services 24/7 at almost every street corner in Southern Nevada. Their programs stabilize young people's lives and provide a safe, supportive environment. NPHY's services empower young people to achieve long-term independence and create their desired futures.

The NPHY drop-in center located just across from the Liberace Museum, provides daily access to the several resources that the organization has to offer. During the WIC week event, our volunteers used the time to help organize and prepare donations for future changes. It was not only a great time to serve the community and homeless youth, but to fellowship and team up with women alike.

The March 9, 2023 Coronado High School Career Fair was also an interesting and fun event which ran from 6:30AM- 10:40AM. This event was planned by the college and career specialist Michelle Tidball and was well attended by students. I want to thank those of you who volunteered for this as well. They were Stacey Hatfield (NSBAIDRD), Christian Nelson (Moser Architects), Mili Turnbull (TSK), Ivan Gonzalez-Vasquez and Nathaniel Becenti , both UNLV students and members of AIAS. I can’t say enough to thank everyone who participated in these career fairs. I thought that the effort made by the schools was very good and that the students were engaged and learned about us as professionals and may take away some ideas about their future plans. We are looking forward to continuing with this venue .

If you are currently not a member of the AIA Education Outreach Committee and would like the opportunity to participate please contact me via e-mail: johntorpeyaia@gmail.com or cell# 702 580-5903.

A good coach understands that mastery of any skill requires much effort and perseverance, and that positive reinforcement encourages the desired improvement.

But the benefits of being positive go far beyond motivating learners. Positive thinking leads to better mental and physical health, increased resilience, better coping skills, and longer life span.

Benjamin Franklin, who lived to be 84 at a time when the average life expectancy of his peers was around 35, believed in the power of positive thinking combined with hard work and diligence. "I haven't failed," he said of his repeated attempts to invent an electric light bulb. "I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work!"

As an ancient form of art, Mosaics have long been assembled from tiny stones, shells, or glass into spectacular artworks covering floors and walls. Subject matter ranged across geometric patterns, narrative scenes, displays of plants and nature, and decorative motifs. Artists making mosaics today might be inspired by classical subject matter or create something entirely new in the ultra-contemporary art setting of present day.

Built in 1973, AIA’s historic Washington, D.C. headquarters has dated single-pane windows and uninsulated exterior walls, which fall far short of meeting the organization’s Framework for Design Excellence. See how the renovations will exceed AIA’s 2030 Commitment standards for fossil-fuel use reduction by fully electrifying the building, reducing energy use by 58 percent, and serving the building through a 100 percent renewable energy mix.
