Subject Overview
This course gives pupils the opportunity not only to learn about the beliefs and practices of Christianity and Islam, but to engage in intellectual discussion about ethical and philosophical concepts within these two religions. The course also explores non-religious and Humanist points of view that allow for debate and evaluation of religious ideas. This is an academic subject that will require a mixture of short paragraph writing and longer, essay-style responses. Skills of knowledge recall, explanation and evaluation will continue to develop through this course.
Course Content
Paper 1: Area of Study 1 – Christianity Christian Beliefs - Trinity; Creation; the Incarnation; the last days of Jesus’ life; salvation; Christian eschatology; the problem of evil and suffering divergent solutions offered to the problem. Marriage and the Family - Marriage; sexual relationships; families; support for family in the local parish; family planning; divorce and remarriage; equality of men and women and gender prejudice/discrimination. Living the Christian Life - Worship; sacraments; prayer; pilgrimage; celebrations; future of the Christian Church; local Church and the local community; Church in the worldwide community. Matters of Life and Death - Origins and value of the universe; sanctity of life; origins and value of human life; abortion; life after death; non-religious arguments against life after death; euthanasia; issues in the natural world.
Paper 2: Area of Study 2 – Islam Muslim Beliefs - The Six Beliefs; the Five Roots; the nature of Allah; Prophethood; Muslim holy books; Angels; predestination; life after death. Crime and Punishment -Justice; crime; good, evil and suffering; punishment; aims of punishment; forgiveness; treatment of criminals; death penalty. Living the Muslim Life - Ten Obligatory Acts; Five Pillars (each in detail); Jihad; celebrations and commemorations. Peace and Conflict - Peace; peace-making; conflict; pacifism; just war theory; holy war; weapons of mass destruction; issues surrounding conflict.
