Subject Overview

GCSE Drama has been designed to be a practical, engaging and creative specification for pupils to study. It will provide opportunities to understand and create drama as a practical art form in which ideas and meaning are communicated to an audience through informed artistic choices. The main purpose of this qualification is to allow pupils to study drama in an academic setting, interrogating this art form and applying their knowledge and understanding to the process of creating and developing drama and to their own performance work.

Course Content

Component 01/02: Pupils will research and explore a stimulus, work collaboratively and create their own devised drama. They will complete a portfolio of evidence during the devising process; will perform in a final performance and write an evaluation of their work.

Component 03: Pupils develop and apply theatrical skills in acting or design by presenting a showcase of two extracts from a performance text. They will complete a concept pro-forma describing their research on the text and their artistic intention for the performance.

Component 04: This component has two sections: The study of a performance text and the development of drama in performance in Section A and an evaluation of a live production in Section B. This component is assessed through a written exam at the end of the course.
